Get Ready: PS Vita is Coming February 22nd

This afternoon on stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, I shared some very exciting news that I know the PlayStation Nation has been anticipating since we unveiled PlayStation Vita back in January. For those looking to get their hands on the ultimate in handheld entertainment, I’m thrilled to let you know that starting on February 22, 2012, PS Vita will be available at major retailers in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe.

PlayStation Vita North America 3G packaging

Our first-party studios and an army of publishing partners have been extremely hard at work to ensure that PS Vita launches with a vast library of titles that deliver unique gameplay experiences that go beyond any handheld or mobile device on the market. We have more than 100 games currently in development globally that span many different genres, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, EA Sports’ FIFA, Activision’s Call of Duty, and numerous others that you’ll hear about in the months ahead.

I’ve had the chance to spend some time with several of these titles and I think you’ll be blown away by how each takes advantage of the technology packed into PS Vita to deliver amazing gaming experiences. With its vibrant 5-inch OLED screen, dual analog sticks, dual cameras, and front and rear touch panel, PS Vita will deliver rich, immersive games with stunning graphics, which simply can’t be found anywhere else. Now you’ll be able to play shooters and action titles on-the-go with controls that are familiar, and you won’t have to block out the gorgeous screen to interact with the games.

In addition to the deep portfolio of games, you’ll also have access to native social applications – near and Party – that help you connect with your friends and fellow PS Vita owners. We also recently announced that PS Vita will have your favorite social networking applications like Facebook, foursquare, Skype, and Twitter, so you can share and connect with friends. With PS Vita, you can enjoy the best handheld gaming experience available and stay connected to the people and interests you care about.

It’s never been a better time to be a part of PlayStation Nation and I can’t wait for you to experience this revolutionary handheld system. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we near the February 22, 2012 launch!

  • Playstation Store update has been canceled this week.

  • I could be missing it, but where is the store update? It’s 11:15PM on the East coast in Lil Ol’ NC…… Justa wonderin’ possibly update tomorrow or……. I would think Sony would update on a schedule, but it being a free online service who really knows? This is kinda the reason Sony trails behind Microsoft and Nintendo =/

  • @246

Where is this information? I would call you a troll, but you could be telling the truth.

  • I love the stupidity of gamers. ‘The memory cards are over priced’ when we don’t even know the actual price of the memory cards. Why don’t you guys think before you write?

  • grat job sony… nice way to show us that’s ONLY ON PSN that u wait too long for updates!!! it’s past 1am in brazil and i’m waiting since 7pm here that’s the usual time that F**** update pops up.. but today something went wrong.. AND HEY.. WE’RE STILL HERE!!! WAITING AT LEAST A NOTE SAYING THAT SOMETHING REALLY WENT WRONG!

  • @248

Weird somehow he was 246 lol oh well same thing how do you know this?

  • when can we pre oder it

  • I know some are upset for the store being late but not me cause SONY has the best games I ever played and I am happy to live to see it.Thank you for making it happen.

  • 11:17 here and only Payday on the store U-U,I wanted to play the demo but is not up yet…..

  • @cosmis_chaos I think the issue is that these memory cards will be a proprietary formal, which means Sony (and possibly Sandisk, if they’re manufacturing them for Sony) can fix the price however they like. It’s highly unlikely these things will be reasonably priced. What’s more, if Sony had stuck with Memory Sticks, or Micro SD cards, people could simply transfer their PSP memory cards straight over to the new system with no added expense.
There’s no technical issues the prevent that from happening, so it’s clearly a ‘hidden cost’ of the Vita, and leaves something of a bad taste in the mouth. With the low price of flash memory these days, Sony would have been better off putting 4gb of flash memory in the thing really – ultimately it would have been to their advantage as it would not only encourage sales of the Vita, but increase traffic to the PS store.
Instead, it seems Sony is being both myopic and greedy, although anyone who is shocked by their behavior probably hasn’t been paying attention to their business practices.

  • How about the PSN store update? I know this is a great reveal but I still want the store update.

  • Sony I need the update now. Not only do I need Okabu, but some of us have to sleep in late wake up, not shower, and head down to wall street or (insert city center name) so I can smell like garbage, be an idiot, and defacate in public while I protest the very people who create all my creature comforts. Hurry up…please or I’ll boycott and protest you…NOT. I like showering and being mentally fit, thank you. But seriously…hurry.

Sweet news on the Vita BTW!!!

  • @cosmis_chaos

I’m not one of the people complaining but I just wanted to say that we do know what the memory cards cost in Japan so it isn’t that hard to figure out what they’ll cost here.

  • soooooo………… i am highly doubting a update today. Im sure everyone left to go home to there families.

  • @cosmis_chaos

epic comment. Yeah already the 3g is too expensive, memory cards are wayyyy too expensive and the system has a bunch of bugs that require me to wait for the 4g model that doesn’t exist. LOL.

  • @marlyt
Wall street provides you with your creature comforts? I guess you’re a stock market trader then, right?

    Or an idiot?

    Both, perhaps??

  • Playstation Store update has been canceled this week. You can all stop waiting for something that isn’t coming.

  • @marlyt

You sir… Are an idiot. Go back to watching Fox “news”.

  • This is great Jack. Thank you. I have one question. I really liked the internet radio feature on the psp. I use it all the time. Will that feature come back (just how it is in which we can choose our stations on the psp) on the Vita?

  • Good ol’ Silent Sony. Can’t talk directly to the players, and when they do talk its about something unrelated. I see their PR team from the PSN Hack hasn’t been fired.

  • @251

The prices of the memory cards were already released for Japan. Its a great, and quite reliable indicator of the kind of prices we are going to pay, which are extremely over priced for the memory to dollar ratio. Why don’t YOU think before you write?

  • Well this has been a huge disappointment. I’ve been waiting to get Naruto Ultimate Ninja Impact from PSN rather than getting a physical copy. Incredibly late updates like this definitely don’t encourage users to get games from PSN. Today was the only free time I had to play it and I could have gotten the game at 10 AM if I would have gotten the physical copy from GameStop. It’s now 11:30 PM and still no update. This has definitely discouraged me from using PSN to get newly released games.

  • OH YES OH YES OH YES OH YES OH YES

  • Hate AT&T but have to get the 3G version… just wish it could be used as a phone also. Sony can you fix that?

  • It has updated later than this before. One week, within the last six months, it didn’t update until 1am eastern time. It’s not the end of the world one way or another. Funny though how they put Payday up without anything else because of the grief they got over the delay 2 weeks ago. Can you imagine the stupidity riot up in here if they hadn’t stuck that pacifier up there first?!? “You’re holding my money hostage Sony. I hate you. You owe me double my money back. Get ready for a lawsuit for false imprisonment of my money, blah, blah, blah…”

  • headin toward midnight here.. guess i can hang out on ff14 for the rest of the night and continue developing my character

  • @ lpguycu

I don’t watch news dummy. And you sir, can bite me. Go shower, hippy.

  • wow you seriously took my advice and changed the update to wednesday?! lol dumb move sony lol

  • i thought it was out. oh well, i’m not into handhelds anymore

  • @ marlyt

people obviously werent around back when the store was browser based and all we got was a few trailers and backrounds and maybe the occasional demo if we were lucky

  • Playstation Store update has been canceled this week. You can all stop waiting for something that isn’t going to come.

  • Awesome as ever Jack my friend. PSVita shine as bright and will sell great when it hits over at each country worldwide. :)

  • Well I know I told people to quit complaining about the store update earlier but that was at 6 east coast time. Now its almost midnight and im going to have to ask WHERES THE GD STORE UPDATE?!

  • Awesome, its the vita. Now maybe you can update the freaking store now.

  • And as I said that it updated. You dont have to thank me…

  • @ John-Shooter

Ahhh, those were the days my friend. Remember Wednesdays when we might get an update, but might not. The first game I ever bought from the store was PAIN, a fine purchase. Trailers only, no DLC, no tier one games for sure LOL. BTW is that Drake in a fat suit for your avatar? Thanks for the trip down 2007 memory lane.

  • Actually, you know what? I wouldn’t mind the past midnight update if someone from the staff would let us know if they are even working on it. Cmon, they know darn well that making an update THIS LATE is unacceptable, the least they can do is tell us whats going on.

  • hmmm rarely post here, but seriously what’s with the store update? at least tell us if there will be any update at all. about the post, i heard the 8gb card will be like $45 and 16gb around $80. that actually is not that bad (unless your a spoiled brat that needs the latest thing all the time) I remember a time where a 2gb memory card for psp was around $100! ahh the good old days!! :)

  • Yes!!:D, thank you Sony I can’t wait till Feb 22, will Gravity Daze arrive at launch?

  • Cant WAIT!!

  • @ marlyt

my first purchase was actually cash guns chaos lol .. ah the days before trophies and games that were $4.99 new
i might go play that later actually once i get my pugilist to 25 in final fantasy xiv

  • Well the store finally updates but man is it locking up constantly. Every time I pick something it takes like 3 minutes to go into it or exit out of it.

  • [DELETED] ..midnight launch here i come!!

  • What are graphics like… i didnt like the psp graphics! im hoping for ps3 graphics on it!

  • Is it weird to get an erection from this? (Sorry, couldn’t resist :P)

  • YES!! waited so long and finally almost here!! as one guy said

    LONG.LIVE.PLAY

    LONG.LIVE.VITA!!!

  • Probably gonna get this after i do my taxes!!!! [DELETED] YEAH!!!

  • It had better play ALL of my PSOne game purchases from the PSN store…..Day One…..at no extra cost.

Sony, you do this, I buy. No PSOne games or a re-purchase is bad business.

  • DAY 1 PURCHASE!! AND I DONT CARE IF THEY COME OUT WITH A SLIMMER ONE A FEW MONTHS DOWN THE YEAR..BECAUSE YOU ALL KNOW ITS GOING TO HAPPEN..LOL 2-22-12…IS GOING TO BE EPIC!

  • Im actually really exited about this!
