Will you be picking up the 3D Display this November?

General Questions

When will the 3D Display be available?
The 3D Display will be widely available on November 13, 2011.

I pre-ordered the PlayStation 3D Display from a retailer that was offering a free copy of Resistance 3, but I notice that the promotion is no longer being promoted on the website. Am I still getting Resistance 3 for free?
Yes. If you pre-ordered the PlayStation 3D Display from a retailer that advertised a free copy of Resistance 3 on or before September 30, 2011, you will still be getting a copy of the game with your shipment. The offer officially ended on October 1st, 2011 and that’s the reason retailers had taken down the promotion from their website.

What do I get in the box?
The 3D Display was made to play 3D games right out of the box. For the MSRP of $499.99, you get the 3D Display, one pair of 3D Glasses, MotorStorm Apocalypse Blu-ray game, and an HDMI cable. All you need to do is hook up your PS3 system and you’re ready to go.

Does the 3D Display work in normal 2D mode?
Yes. You can choose to play games and watch movies in regular high-definition 2D.

What’s the difference between Active 3D technology used on the 3D Display and Passive 3D technology used on Passive 3D displays?
The most notable difference between the two is the 3D resolution. With active 3D, you get full HD 3D playback. With passive 3D, you will get half the resolution. Active 3D displays require active 3D glasses and passive 3D displays require polarized passive 3D glasses. The 3D Display supports active 3D and the highest resolution.

What 3D games are available right now on the PS3 system?
A full list of currently available 3D games is available here. Check back soon — it’s updated frequently!

Technical Specifications

What inputs and outputs does the 3D Display support?
The 3D Display features two HDMI 1.4 inputs and one component cable input, plus a stereo headphone output.

What does Edge LED backlighting and 240Hz refresh rate mean?
Edge LED backlighting offers improved contrast and brightness relative to normal (CCFL) LCD displays. Additionally, the technology allows for a super slim design. 240Hz is currently the best-in-class refresh rate. With such a high refresh rate, you get reduced crosstalk in 3D mode, which realizes clear 3D images.

What does the integrated subwoofer do? Is the built-in sound superior to comparable displays?
The 3D Display’s integrated subwoofer enhances low-frequency audio, giving an extra kick to bass-filled sound effects. This means that booming explosions, growling demons, and throaty engines will sound more immersive compared to the tinny audio provided by many display speakers. You can also connect a stereo headphone jack and use your favorite pair of stereo headphones, or use the new Wireless Stereo Headset that interfaces directly with your PS3.

SimulView Questions

What is the advantage of SimulView?
This special two-player feature is unique to the 3D Display in that it significantly enhances two-player mode in select games. Ordinarily, two-player mode is played in split-screen format. With this unique two-player feature, each player gets their own full (2D) HD screen while wearing the 3D Glasses for the 3D Display.

Can I use SimulView with other Sony 3D TVs?
At this time, the 3D Display is the only display on the market that supports the SimulView two-player gaming feature.

What will I need to play a game with this special two-player feature?
The 3D Display, two pairs of 3D Glasses for the 3D Display, a PS3 system, a PS3 game that supports the special two-player feature, and a buddy.

What games support the SimulView feature as of launch? Will future games support SimulView?
At launch, you’ll be able to play MotorStorm Apocalypse, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, and Super Stardust HD. We’ll have more titles to share soon.

Do both players need to use the new 3D Glasses for SimulView to work?
Yes. Each player will need to have a pair of the 3D Glasses for the 3D Display as these are currently the only 3D glasses available that support SimulView.

Do you expect that any existing games will be updated to add SimulView support?
Yes. We are continuing to evaluate all games that would be candidates for SimulView and working individually with each respective development team to determine if enabling SimulView makes sense.

Will the 3D Display work with anything other than my PS3 system?
Absolutely. While the 3D Display is optimized for any HD gaming console, it features three HD inputs (two HDMI, one component) that allow you to connect to your PS3 system, cable TV box, and PC. You can also connect your PS2 and PSP using their component video output..

What resolutions does the 3D Display support?
Any resolution up to and including 1080p (1920 x 1080 progressive scan).

3D Glasses by SCE

3D Glasses Questions

Why are the new 3D Glasses better than current offerings?
The 3D Glasses are noticeably lighter and less obtrusive than existing active 3D glasses. Due to advancements in 3D technology they also suffer from less “crosstalk” in 3D images. They also feature an integrated rechargeable battery that you can charge using the included micro-USB cable instead of installing a new battery. The new 3D Glasses also support the SimulView feature, which enables two players to enjoy their own full (2D) screen while wearing the 3D Glasses for the 3D Display in supported games. Finally, retailing at $69.99, the PlayStation 3D Glasses are more affordable than most Active 3D glasses on the market.

Are the new 3D Glasses universal?
Yes. The new 3D Glasses are universally compatible with Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Sharp ACTIVE Shutter 3D ready displays that use IR emitters; however, we do not guarantee its performance on other TV/monitors.

How fast do the built-in rechargeable batteries charge?
The glasses are fully rechargeable via the included micro-USB cable. If you need a quick charge, three minutes of charge will get you approximately three hours of 3D play. If you want a full charge, 30 minutes of charge will get you approximately 30 hours of 3D play.

What is crosstalk and how do the 3D Glasses minimize crosstalk?
Crosstalk is 3D distortion that occurs when active 3D glasses are not communicating properly with the 3D display. This occurs most often when a user is watching 3D content and the glasses are not in a “normal” viewing angle (for example if you’re laying down on the couch sideways and your head is tilted). With the 240Hz refresh on 3D Display and 3D Glasses, this effect is minimized.

Are these 3D Glasses meant only for gaming?
No, they excel with 3D content of all types. While the glasses have been optimized for the 3D gaming experience, they offer best-in-class 3D quality.

What do the buttons on the 3D Glasses do?
You can turn on the 3D Glasses by simply sliding the battery switch on, which appears on the front inner right ear piece. Once the glasses are on, and you’re playing a SimulView-enabled game, you can switch between the 1st player and 2nd player view at any time by pressing the small circular power button, which appears on the top of the glasses above your nose bridge. If you hold the small circle power button for several seconds, you will power down the glasses.

Directly to the right of the small circle power button lies the micro-USB port, which enables you to recharge the glasses.

  • Nice. Can’t wait to get my hands on this TV. It won’t be until after launch however. If between now and February you all announced a larger size, say 32″, I wouldn’t be disappointed. ;)

I’m glad I’m already part of the 3D revolution. Picked up a 42″ Vizio 3D internet enabled TV from Walmart for $649 about a month ago. Haven’t been disappointed at all.

Can we get a list of games that will support SimulView or do at the launch of the TV along with a list of all currently 3D enabled titles? I’m hoping Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 does. It would also be good to see games like Killzone 3 receive a patch to support it.

Now, this last bit has absolutely nothing to do with the display but 3D in general. PLEASE look to expand the 3D content available through the Playstation Store. The games side seems to be getting more and more 3D content while the video side gets left behind. I’d love to see more options for 3D videos available through the PS Store such as Pirates of the Caribbean and all around more 3D content that’s currently available in their HD or SD formats but not 3D.

  • @Scaramanga1983: Resident Evil 5 is not 3D enabled. It however is Playstation Move enabled with the Gold Edition.

  • so will there be a wall mount available , and is it possible to stream 3d content from a dlna compatible PC (or the PSP/PSV)

  • I really hope for CES 2012 Sony announces somewhat of a PlayStation BRAVIA. All their new TV sets should have this SimulView from here on out. If they implement that with different sizes then Sony sure has a winner of their hands.

  • It should have come w/a built in usb port for the new Official PS3 headset that i got…

  • I was thinking about picking up this TV, but I was wondering if there is any input lag. I play a lot of fighting games and input lag can make the game unplayable. I know some new TVs have little to no input lag, so if you could reply in the next Q&A that would be great.

  • I was going back and forth on this but I will go ahead and get it, and it’ll make a nice Christmas present to myself.

And since TRON: Legacy is the only movie I’ve seen in 3D at the theater, I guess it’ll only be fitting to make it the first 3D movie I watch on my new PlayStation 3D display.

As for games: I only play Gran Turismo 5 so I hope it looks great in 3D (if not, then I’ll of course just play it in 2D).

  • The display feels more like a PC monitor than it does a TV with the way it feels stripped down from any sense of a TV (no remote {PS3 remote has no volume control}, no TV tuner, coax, or composite for legacy gaming).

Any word on the screen having nVidia 3D Vision support for the PC crowd? As it stands the display is not listed on their website (http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-system-requirements.html), but that could be due to the screen not being released for another month and a half.

Anyways, can’t wait for my pre-order to arrive with a copy of Motorstorm Apocalypse and Resistance 3. I’ve been holding back on picking them up because of this screen coming with them.

  • I have some questions. Let’s say that you and your buddy are playing a 3D enabled split-screen game and are seeing your own 3D screen but you also have other buddies waiting for their turn to play. Are the overlapping screens the only thing that they will see and if so, how will they be able to view your screen or your buddy’s who is playing with you. Will they need their own glasses too and if they do, how will they transition from viewing your screen to your buddy’s screen?

  • I love this idea, and it’ll probably force me to relocate my PS3 to a desktop setting. However, there is one concern that I have; it says that it supports 3D PC gaming; but does it support Nvidia’s 3D Vision software? I’d like ot be able to use that natively, instead of having to use conversion software…

  • Will this be released in Australia?

  • @TheUndertaker85

It says right in the article that Killzone 3 is a SimulView supported title…

  • Will there be a Resistance 3 bundle without pre-order available or one without a game for less.

  • When will the full specs be released?

  • At launch or in the near future will drivers be made allowing PC’s to take advantage and use “SimulView” for PC’s? i.e is this going to be PC friendly tech or a PS3 exclusive screen when it comes down to the SimulView feature.

I hope Sony isn’t focusing on to niche of a market with its small size, high price, lack of TV tuner, wall mount and remote…

I can only assume SimulView shines trough and allows mix-matching of inputs so I can share with my family. (wife can watch TV I can game, ect) Or dual screen functionality, All in one for PC multitasking (RR is one screen then change to LL for another) just like having 2 monitors side by side. At the very least I hope SimulView works for PC games because of its small size its almost useless as a TV and ideal for a monitor!

My perchance dissension is currently pending the use and functionality of SimulView in greater detail…

  • Does the TV work with the original ps3 remote control? Any plans on releasing larger screen sizes?

    • Unfortunately, the original BD remote is not compatible with the 3D Display.

There are currently no plans on releasing a larger screen size.

  • I preordered the display in Canada before Oct. 1 from a retailer but they did not advertise any free Resistance 3 promo. Will this offer still be honoured by SCEA or it isn’t offered in Canada?

  • Looks cool could use this for small rooms

  • Two very important questions regarding specs.

    1. What’s the input lag on this tv?
    2. What’s the contrast Ratio?

  • Cool, I have 2 questions.

    1) I have an Nvidia 590 graphics card in my PC that does some 3d, will that work with this monitor?

    2) You say I have to buy a separate stand? Does that mean that without the stand the Monitor will not stand at all? Or is there a basic stand?

  • I can’t wait, GONNA buy this thing!!! :)

  • btw, I’m from the Philippines, Will SONY offer a warranty deal here?

  • My cable box is not in my home so I won’t be getting the 3d tv but if you guys can make it where you can hook up a Tv cable wire up to it I will buy it in a heart beat but if you not I save my money for your guys 46 inch sony tv

  • Leave it to Sony to give us a nice gaming TV with lack of input options.
low range led tv”s have 3 to 4 HDMI inputs, scart, usb, and have a 32” screen.
I think i’ll wait for next years model.

  • $500 for a 24″ computer monitor seems a bit much. Maybe when Target clearance’s them out for $124.98 in a couple of months I’ll consider replacing my 20″ monitor with it. At least Sony isn’t calling it a tv, people just jump to that conclusion. No tuner = no tv, which explains no remote. When’s the last time you bought a PC monitor that came with a remote? Props for the built in subwoofer though, thats a nice touch.

  • I really, really wanted to get this but is just too small… well… ill keep saving for a bigger 3D TV

  • So amazon.com customer service doesnt know anything about R3 as a pre order bonus…the original url for the display for pre orders before sept 30 is gone and it seems they dont even have a record of it. Is Sony covering the R3 bonus for amazon orders?

    • Yes. As long as you placed your pre-order on or before September 30, 2011, you will receive the free copy of Resistance 3 when your 3D Display ships.

  • If this is being marketed as a gaming display, we need to know the input lag in ms to make an informed decision before purchasing this as a primary display device.

This kind of information needs to be readily available. I can’t believe how many people ask questions about frivolous and extraneous features before worrying about the single thing that matters the most in modern displays.

  • @77: Yeah, Sony — Amazon looks like it’s totally messed up the pre-order bonus for this. I placed my order on Sept. 17th and

    1) as mikkoxB says, the product page for the item I placed the pre-order on (i.e. the link my from order info) has completely disappeared
    2) No details on whether R3 is going to be packed in as a bonus
    3) They still haven’t updated my order to the new release date — it still says I’m going to receive this on Jan 4th or later.

I’m not sure at what point all of this got messed up — when you contact Amazon, the reps don’t even seem to have a clue about the pre-order bonus. Would be great if Sony could take steps with Amazon to clear this mess up.

    • As long as you placed the pre-order on or before September 30, 2011, you will receive a free copy of Resistance 3 when your 3D Display is shipped.

  • Killzone 3 doesn’t currently have split-screen so if its going to be one of the games that support SimulView does that mean split-screen is going to be added to the game?

  • Ok so two questions,

    1) what retailers are going to carry this in Canada?
    2) will the original BD remote be made compatible at some point?

  • when is the release date for the new remote and its retail price?

    • The new Media / Blu-ray Disc Remote Control has shipped and should be widely available at retailers by the end of this month. MSRP is $24.99.

  • is this TV seriously going to be 499 USD and £499 in the UK…. so its affordable-ish in the US… but totally high end and overprice in the UK :/

  • i wonder if their gonna make a bigger version but im either gonna buy the 3D display or the vita (hard choice)

  • Question:
Since this display is 240Hz, does it support 24p? (24ish frames per second in progressive mode, sometimes called by SONY as True Cinema)? (film framerate)

  • Great idea Sony. I think I will stick with my 60-inch Mitsubishi. I do love the fact I will be able to buy the glasses to use on my set-up. Smart thinking on that one. I will most definitely be buying 2 pairs. :)

  • Hello,

All the TVs 3D do not do SimulView?

    Thanks!

  • @17 There is a component video cable available for the Wii.

I’m pleased to hear that the date was moved up compared to when Gamestop originally had it listed for release (11/26). This means will be able to enjoy 13 days earlier than expected. Can’t wait to watch Tron: Legacy 3D & Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D.

  • This is really a cool device. I already have a 3D display and use it alone. But if i would need to it with a buddy, i would buy it.

  • I am from the UK, and i for one am very disapionted by the way Sony has treated the UK customers by selling this 3D Monitor to the US for far cheaper than in the UK. For $499 is in at around £314 in the UK, so why are Sony charging us the extra £185 for this Sony release. I was very excited in hearing about this 3D monitor being released so that it is far cheaper than a 3D TV, however it is not!, as for £500 you can buy a 3D TV for that price of the Monitor!. I was going to buy this product so that i could enjoy 3D and transport it from my bedroom to my living room so that i could keep my mum company whilst playing my favorite Game’s in glorious 3D 1080P HD, without being unsociable with my family as i could both talk and play my game at the same time to keep both me and my family happier. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH THIS PRICE IN THE UK BEFORE IT IS RELEASED!.

    Yours faithfully

  • by- Emman_nuel–> “Am I to understand that SimulView allow 2 players to play in 2D only and not in 3D”

so- I tried the 3d display last night during a midnight game launch of BF3 and was wondering WHY I had my own screen during SimulView and it WAS NOT IN 3D…. The game I was playing was Motorstorm. If this is the case that you can only view the image in 3D with only person at a time then I’m greatly disappointed! I preordered this way back when it was first announced – but I think that I might have to cancel…. I wanted both players to view the image in 3D.. other wise what is the point? I could just get a bigger 3D tv and have split screen- with both players playing in 3D…

  • Just need to know input lag and I might consider getting it. Problem is most Sony TVs are known to have horrendous lag. Also, can it support Nvidia 3d?

  • Hi, I have a question…I pre-ordered my 3d display on september 30th, but because of some issues with my bank, the $499.99 were debited by october 5th….my question is, would I get the free copy of “Resistance 3”? I pre-ordered in Amazon.com. Sorry if the question is to obvious, but I’m kind of new on buying online… ;-). Please answer me. Thank’s

  • @94, If your pre-ordering goes like anything I’ve experienced in the past, the date when the order was placed (not payment received) determines what you can & cannot receive.

  • Is there any 2D -> 3D conversion software on the display?

  • Are the 3d glasses friendly to us who have to wear prescription glasses in order to see? Like will we have to butcher them to be able to wear two pairs of glasses at the same time?

  • According to reports made here on the PS Blog and on other areas of Playstation.com, it is being reported that the new Blu-Ray/Media Remote Control would be available at the end of October. I have been checking around at Target, Walmart, Best Buy, & GameStop and have not seen it.

I know it’s compatible with the PS3 3D Display and I am wanting to pick it up so I can control the display without funbling with the controls, when I pick up my pre-ordered display on November 13th.

  • Really? It doesn’t come with a remote? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Granted, it doesn’t change the fact that I am still going to get this display, however it is a notable inconvenience that I will have to buy one separately.

  • How will games that support simulview be communicated? In other words, how will we know which games support the simulview feature? Also, is there any possibility of simulview being compatible with PC games or other systems?
