UPDATED: Upcoming Change to PlayStation 3 and PSP Game Content on PlayStation Network

UPDATE: On November 17th (Pacific Time), the PlayStation network will undergo maintenance. Once this maintenance window has completed, the new policy will apply. If you want to purchase content under the current rules, please do so before this maintenance begins on November 17th.

We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content. As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated as follows:

For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:

  • PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.
  • PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.

Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.

PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please visit here or contact consumer services.

  • That’s going to be a major blow at Call of Duty and Mass Effect 3.

This is going to remove the edge PlayStation had over Xbox.

The only one who’s ”winning” in this is problably Xbox, since it may enhance their sales.
Since people can’t have 5 accounts, those of them who have mulitple platforms may switch to Xbox since you can’t share content on PS3 anymore.

1 question I would like to know.
If I have a PSP 2000, a PSP Go and planning on a VIta, where does that leave me?
Is Vita a whole new console where I can have 2 vitas, or is it counted as another PSP?

  • This is just going to incite players to hack their consoles to get them on all of their PS3s.

And instead of saying ”abusing” the system by purchasing the game content for 5 system, they’re going to hack their system and make ALL games avaible for 100s of PS3. Yeah, way to go… tough you’ve had enought of hacking?

    i own just 2 PS3, fat 1 is dead.
At least i could get to reclaim the account by disactivating it on the fat 1.

I was thinking about sharing my account with my cousin, since times are rough, he doesn’t own a PS3 yet but it would have given him some good games to keep him entertained.

  • No one can ”abuse” the laws you’ve established.
I still think it should be 4, but whatever…

You know, that gave PS3 a great edge over it’s competition.
Most likely, people will switch to retail over the PS Store.

… wouldn’t it be cool if you could order Blu-Ray Disc directly from the PS Store?

  • I just bought MW3 elite which includes all the maps to be released after nov 18. Will I be able to play them in 5 ps3s because I purchased them before Nov 18?. Or, will it be 2 ps3s because the maps will be downloaded after Nov 18?

  • probably 2, unless you use the code right now, then it will be 5, i guess…

  • ello people im glad to see people is now stepping forward n letting ther texts be herd n not taking ther crap im glad when they see ther downloaded content aint selling that should be like a kick in ther mouth n hopefull will show them americas canadains n mexican people we all have bigger house i agree in japan most houses are smaller do to more people n smaller country cant hols so many but we ther people n gammers of all kinds needs are rights reinforced n should not have are rights stolen away making 5 a 2 is stupid in so many different ways i feel like when i read the copy thingi when i bought each download it said 5 systems now im gonna see2 haaaaa like im buying screw sony ill buy ther disc n no content see how they like it

  • I have 2 PS3 and 2 PSP. Will I be able to play a PS1 game just in 2 of them? Is it 2 PS3 and 2 PSP / 2 PS3 or 2 PSP or yet 1 PS3 and 1 PSP? I’m confused. I need an answer.

  • No wonder people are calling sony Fascist and Communist. The “comment awaiting moderation” is just part of their intimidation to harass us all into keeping silent and not exposing the illegality of sony’s operations. As Nawty_Jamierave pointed out we should all call sony and complain. We should go farther and contact all the developers and publishers who release content over PSN and explain to them why they’ll be losing a lot of sales on PS3 and PSP in future. They will not be happy about this either after all the time, effort and development costs only to have their sales cut off because of sonys ill considered greed.

  • Honestly i really hope this fixes my problem, my old 80gb ps3 over heated and i didn’t know about the deactivating thing so i sold it for parts, thank god my new one works for gaming purposes but it doesn’t work for video.

  • Well Sony congratulations on doing this, sorry that we like to gameshare cause the economy is rough, but I guess you all wouldn’t know about that cause you are just rolling in the money, well after this I expect to see a drop in sales, I am a diehard sony fan but this move, is by all means stupid so now that I have said my piece maybe you all should read what we are saying and actually give us real answers instead of just prancing around it, and now I leave with this, congrats on screwing yourselves out of the gaming edge you had over the 360, now that it is gone where does that leave us?

  • @pagenzero, we have other options for watching movies, theres other blooray players, as for games we have PC’s n other systems to play on, consoles, handhelds, even tablets & phones now. What the real question should be is whats sony gonna do with no customers left? They’ll find out when the repo men come calling.

  • yes im pointing out issus n the issue with your ps3 over heating bro is do to ps3 servers being over populated n sony aint making ther servetrs better they making it worst i herd ther under staff also u notice on ps home u freeze like crazy n u got to big games on sony n ther aint enough psn server to go to all 3 big games like free realms n dcu online n ps home they new to rebuild n make ther server biger n stronger n faster speeds n i dont know have you notice we were promissed better games but why is most games 720p when games can be 1040 p i think it was dont that make games faster n better n more playerable as far as the graphics are better look at red faction that games was 10040p it did good only a few games that offered full ps3 gameing highlights the reason your system over heated was to to over populated servers bro not any thing to do whith the times u can download but im glad u posted all the same

  • I too would like to know what is going to happen to my U3 fortune hunter bundle, I did buy it before the 18th, but im pretty sure your not releasing the content for several weeks still, so will i still be able to use that on all of my consoles even after the 18th or what?

Bump it up to 3 activations, dont choose the left of what could be middle ground here Sony. 1. 2. (3.) 4. 5.

  • Win As 3

    C’mon Sony.

  • well couldnt we all sue sony for gimmick infringment for saying we could download it to any 5 systems we want just haveing a limit of 5 was all now they say 2 idk abot yall i would say the is gimmick infrengment

  • 10 more days till dooms day of psn content

  • SO basically everyone is complaining over nothing.
This only really effects people who game share.
If it’s your own systems, you can just activate and deactivate (which will probably take 30 seconds)

  • Doubt it, also lets not forget the chance that some d-bag hacker could compromise the the website.
That would be nice wouldnt it, every system deactivated by some dude with a tude…

Im all for reducing the amount to help prevent abuse, but chopping it down to only two activations hurts those that bought into the sony media household by creating more of a inconvenience around all the devices they own.
I will never deactivate one of my 4 systems because i know as soon as i do, ALL the content before this deadline will no longer work, thats what their not telling you.

The only way it wouldnt is if it was managed by each individual content (game or Dlc) on the website.
But i highly doubt it will be set up anything like that…

  • While I Kind of understand the reason behind this, (I’ve had people ask me to Mapshare) I think 2 systems is BS. I own 4 PS3 Two at my house, two at GF’s So now, When I go over to her place, I will have to de-activate mine at home, and then Activate them over at her house. waste of time and surely there is a better way. but oh well.

  • I see this as a terrible move, one solely based on Greed
they are putting more and more Full Games for digital download in a slow pace transition for complete digital distribution which is the only way they can stop resale of ‘Used’ copies which they make nothing on
I own multiple systems and two at my house and two others I have placed at family not at home, I buy alot of content for the fact can be used with each system. I bought the PS3 for this feature because the competition did not. They should have left it at 5 activation’s but made that for the entire account. NOT 5 consoles & 5 portables
I don’t use portables to me this would have been smarter

  • ^^ *Hehe, this new face needs to Post Multiple batches * ;)
You should see Sony’s stock (market) chart – It’s just dropping, increases very little, constantly dropping, and when this change is made on the 18 (it will plummet.) I feel sorry for the people who have bought shares in this market, because they’re probably unaware how complex Sony really is, and unwilling to compromise with their customers from this ending year, as well as this coming year.
Before I get started I must start off by saying:
Before I get a Hate comment… Yes I know, I know some of them are the same people, whining, Blah, Blah, Blah… Yes, I know, because I wasn’t born yesterday, also Idk what y’all Beezies think of me (so I’m just letting you know it’s a waste of time and effort to convince and try to talk me out of my beliefs or try to “diss” my blog with a mouthful of hateful comments that won’t faze me.) Who cares if those same people are willing to take the precious time off their hands, and speaking up for those who shy away and don’t speak up for themselves; for those who don’t have their voice heard! (Your just returning the favor by leaving whiny feedback which make you just a guilty to those who disapprove.)

  • Look around you and yourself (you too are a big part of this conflict because you choose to be by putting your two senses into it depending on how this affects your lifestyle.)Think about it its human nature to think like the way we do, because we are all different in sooo many ways, so we’re always going to fight on an occasional basis over who’s right and who’s wrong in an endless conflict (rarely will we come into terms of negotiation/ or meet halfway esp. if the person who doing it is the one who has the upper hand [by having something of value that can be taken away at any given time or that has something that someone else wants (in this case is going to be used to own)].) Sadly, never will we admit to ourselves we are wrong for not thinking it through on both sides of the story to make the other person happy (b/c to us it means defeat/loss or we take it further as a heavy burden upon ourselves for letting this happen), because we end up sticking to what we said (only a few people will step up to the plate and admit they did wrong being the higher person – yet we think they end up being the underdog with no sympathy at all [in reality]

  • ]- but if you switch places with them you’d totally understand the other person situation.)
Why are human beings the way they are? Because most people in this era have a high ego that screaming, “I’m always right, even if I know I’m wrong.” Why are we like this? Because as a gamer the hardest thing to do is let down our guard/emotions we especially don’t like the feeling to losing a fight (admit it you sore loser- stop being in denial you play to WIN – you get the adrenaline pumping and the fulfillment of successes for achieving a victory [>-.<]) We all have our differences, our own way of expressing our beliefs/thoughts/feelings/emotions/etc. that what make us all unique. This is our way of protesting safely at home sheltered with a roof over our heads, instead of causing a riot outside the streets like you see on the news. We differentiate by clashing at each other train of thought, and then start colliding our differences onto others we don’t agree with. So who are you too try and bring down others, or to say what or what not to spend their $$$ on.
There’s 2 side to this story so I’m going to label them as “For it” / “Against it”

  • Those who are “For it” is most likely to be motivated by Sony’s decision are the same ones I hear over and over again just as much as those who are “Against it.” For Example, “ “For it” most likely to start talking shyt trying to take full advantage of w/ the one’s “Against it,” trying to rub it in as many face as possible to get a kick outta it [to be dominant/ no trophy intended/ reward for them = getting those “Against it” to get upset/Fired up] or just being an JERK since this doesn’t involve them, nor concern them. “

  • Then the “For it” just urges those “Against it” to answer back which the “For it” think of the “Against it” as whining over and over/ complaining. Just revolt with those that are “For it” b/c in all their comments they try and prove a point across to those “Against it” that they are wrong when in reality they are not a know it all b/c life as you know it – no one on this Earth is PERFECT. “For it” they brag just as much as you for all the wrong reasons; they’re Selfish. “For it” says something along the lines: “yay, just what I needed.” Then go off to prove their point and try to show their loyalty to Sony by being a “follower” trying to defending Sony, because the one who posted the insight ”Eric Lempel” is too lazy to give a proper answer to the public (answering even the most common question Everyone wants to know.)

  • * Grrr… Why Won’t you let me post? …

  • I don’t get why they are willing to make this drastic outrageous change on the 18th of this month, because it definitely is NOT being innovative (for whoever came up with the idea – and for the majority of the Sony team to stand behind the idea) to me it’s more like repulsive and reckless nonsense (the idea of repelling away your favorite customers from purchasing merchandise from the PSN with a restriction of content that can be use was 5 – is now 2.) I could almost bet they did not think this over (completely), they probably thought of all the pros ($_$) [MONEY!] that would come into play by doing this event, but they didn’t come up with all the cons (–.–) [LESS $$$ MONEY!], so they are also probably reading our blog posts to monitor us to see how many people they’ve affected. So HEAR US OUT S0NY! And respond to us now not after this event takes place on the 18th.

  • I’m posting invisible comments right now, but I read about Deathspear666 “Help..Can’t post on Playstation Blog” google it ^^ so if my post don’t reappear later today it’s because S0NY Really is watching what I post and does care… ^^

  • I understand many are hoping this backfire on Sony’s behalf to open their eyes, but that’s not going to happen unless they lose a lot of the profit because of this change. Think about it, if you sell something original and then tamper with its originality that most people dislike [make less sales] then it be dumb to not consider to change it back to the way it was to keep the customers happy and keep the $$$ flowing [I’m implying that if all goes wrong w/ this decision they can always have the option to go back and change it.]

  • I wonder, what’s Sony’s backup plan after the 18th to keep their customer Happy [because I’m not >8X] which is just around the corner? They haven’t added new features to their system only the one’s that anyone can get, (everyone can get on their hands on APPLE/PC/MAC/HD T.V. at home) yes I’m talking about Netflix, HuLu, Facebook, being able to Reading Blu-ray, etc. This only conveys old ideas to those who would rather use them all on the ps3 if they don’t have those other common devices at home (but most likely they do.) Why are you taking more, and more features away Sony? This feature “Is”, but when this plague comes into effect I’m going to have to use the word “Was” especially the best one yet that has been since day 1 of release (5 years ago.)

  • This gives me the jitter just thinking about how far you’ve come, and every family at home by showing signs of blowing off your faithful consumers with what? The idea of 5 wasteful years of planning to take away these features, when they should add to it to make it stand out from the rest, let alone have the upper hand against rivalry [X] aka Xbox. I have a bad feeling the more Sony takes away from their costumers, the more [X] stands out (not much to say about that – just less rivalry competition.) I could picture [X] fans laughing at Sony right now, because[ X] been nothing but faithful to them since day one, and this give them the upper hand. Now those Ps3 haters will have good comebacks thanks to you S0NY…

  • –What a nuisance to follow through on changing what should have been left alone right from the gecko.
This is becoming an issue, because this little change is utterly forming into a big deal. I thought Sony wanted to keep the Ps3 system as a family oriented game… I guess not anymore, because how many families do you come across that only have one offspring (My gut tells me just a handful [in other words very few].) It’s more commonly to have two to three offspring in a family, so you’re probably asking yourself or at least thinking what on earth does this have to do with this issue? And I leave you unanswered… Why?, think about it because the answer is real simply actually, everyone has their own opinions, brains, feelings, so they need to use them and speak up to be heard.

  • I myself would have sit back like the rest of them to see the outcome, but I told myself do I agree with this feature on the Ps3 being taken away after 5 years- “NO” so that is why I’m speaking up now. I didn’t want to have a guilty conscience; nagging at me, telling me you should have said something to make this right again… What’s holding you back (the fear of letdown or what you don’t want to hear)? You should at least “TRY” saying something before it’s too late, at least trying to make a point across to S0NY, so that the attempt made has a (>) chance to fix this mess. This (>) attempt could make it Right again, because this could make a difference with Anyone who own multiple Ps3’s worldwide don’t go in vein along with it “IF” S0NY Reconsiders.

  • Proceed to enlighten me… Try and persuade me [Others that stand with me] with more offers that can’t be helped… Who supports S0NY? That’s right we “The Consumer, The People, The Gamers.” Families are in a World of hurt when this comes into effect.
Right in front of you “above” and “below” my post S0NY got it’s feedback [Good/Bad], yet no solution intended for now “IF” that is until it hits widespread, and escalates full throttle worldwide : /
I could carry on talking for days about this topic [Blog], but I’m sure you all are tired to what I have to say by now, So Please Speak up GAMERS to be HEARD…

  • My concern is that if I have purchased content / games / add-ons etc and I happen to have my first and second PS3 go bad, does that mean I have lost everything when I purchase my 3rd Unit,,,,well purchased after the 18th November 2011?!?!?! Sorry if this was asked before but it’s too much for me to read right now….

  • Now I leave you the Readers reading this on your electronic screen devices at home, office, work, or wherever you are with my final Thoughts…
P.S. [Proud of you – You actually do care if you made it this far through the reading.]
On one last note before I end my closing statement, anyone reading my post is one of the following:

In the end, YOU’RE either “FOR IT” Or “AGAINST IT”, so how is it affecting you?
    What side are You ON!?
    0.o PLEASE C0MMENT AND SPEAK UP GAMERS!… ^.~
I got a lot of “You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.” So I had to wait Intervals XD

  • This post got cutt off right before comment #877
Likewise, “Followers” you don’t have authority over Sony’s Blogger word, so I don’t want to hear from you [followers/”For its”] I want to hear from SONY in general since Sony’s blogman (Eric Lempel) Seem to not have the higher authority to answer most anticipated questions then I want to hear from someone with higher position, because he’s probably restricted or is not allowed to answer them (The Big Q’s).

  • this does not affect me in the least. Even if it did I would rather stay with my Playstation then defect over to Xbox. let’s see with Sony I get free online. Microsoft I have to pay and if I have multiple accounts then the price just shot up. From what I’ve gathered Sony is the only platform which allows 5/2 accounts to be linked. Yet again from what I’ve gathered the Xbox cannot. I mean I’m not a math expert or anything but I know that 5 is better than 2. If you think about it though 2 sure is a hell of a lot better than 0. So I think people should just take it as it is and appreciate what we do have. XD

  • I’m happy about this.

  • I own 3 ps3’s. I like the hole activation deactivation website idea. But if i have to buy DLC content twice I won’t buy anything from the PS store ever again! Please consider changing your activation number from 2 to 3. I don’t game share and i don’t think people should however on my own three systems i should be able to use what i buy all at the same time.

  • Ok serious question here.

I buy game x on Nov 19th, activate it on 2 systems.

Then I want to activate it on PS3 #3, I must deactivate one of the other systems.

What happens to my old purchases on that deactivated console?

Will there be an option to only deactivate that game only on the console? Or do i deactivate the enitre console, losing access to all my content on that PS3? This would include purchases since launch.

Basically how can you deactivate a console only for new purchases, but keep it active for old ones?

  • And keep in mind that there is a big difference in how one would share physical games and how one would share digital games. If you have ten physical games, you can lend one each to ten different friends. However, to “game share”, it’s basically giving one friend all ten games, no matter if they intend to play the other nine or not.

How this works into either/any side’s argument, I’unno. Just…food for thought, I guess?

  • How does this top game sharing?? It will increase it and here’s how.

These gamesharers share their passwords, allowing them to actually game share with many more people now by being able to activate the game when they play and deactivate it when they done.

Now 25 people can easily game share a single game.

So lets get this going, who wants to create new accounts on the 18th and we will all share them!!!!!

That means each person just buys one thing and we can all use the account!!!!

My idea is just check our IP’s when you log on, this would prove whether the PS3 are in the same house and so prove people are or are not gamesharing.

In reality this move is geared towards getting the honest users to make multiple purchases of the same content.
Just another example of milking the honest cause the company cant figure out or want to prevent the dishonest from doing what they do.

Sony check my IP!!!!! All my PS3’s are in 1 house!!!!

How could you illegally gameshare within a single house???

Please fix or at least increase to 3!!!!!

  • So when you say deactivate you mean the whole system or each individual game?

How long will it take for changes made on the website to be reflected on the PS3?

Why do you hate your customers?

  • Kiki I think sony knows they will lose customers but what they feel they will gain out weights that for them.

Basically they probably assume they will lose at least 25-30% of their “loyal” customers over this.

What they hope to gain obviously is the 100% profit increase due to honest families being forced to buy multiple copies of each piece of content.

The math works out, but the politics behind it are unnerving for certain.

Basically milk the honest to be able to afford the theives.

And all we can do is stop buying from PSN from the 18th on.

This is really eye opening for the future though, where cloud storage will be getting pushed hard.
I have a new found respect for phyical media and will not be switching to digital for as long as I can hold out.
All it takes is someone change their mind and you lose everything.

Anyone supporting Sony’s move i ask this:

“When Sony turns off PSN next month, and all your PSN purchases are gone forever will you still blindly defend their “right” to do that??

They legally own our PS3’s and can do this 2moro if they feel they have lost enough money on PS3.

Dont kid yourself and think they wouldnt if it was in their best interest.

  • @Philly comment #893 From what i understand is any DLC/GAMES/ETC you bought from the PSN can be Shared w/ however many PS3 you own (Up to 5 ps3 MAX), but when the deadline hits “Nov. 17th maintenance” [yes, No Longer the 18th b/c Blog has been revised by Eric Lempel.] anything you haven’t completely downloaded by then will be restricted on only the 2 counsels you choose to keep in one house hold. Basically anything that you download needs to be installed completely on the Ps3 before 17th Maintenance [downloads before the maintenance will be considered as Old DLC.]

  • The Old DLC you have stored on you Ps3’s [keep in mind up to 5] won’t be affected by this CHANGE [I read some of Karen Spearrin posts so I know it’s legit.] So after the maintenance takes place, you could still play all the old DLC you have on those systems you have [like nothing changed], but anything after the maintenance – will be restricted now to the 2 Ps3 you are willing to keep. The leftover Ps3’s will be able to play the old DLC it has stored on it – but it is restricted to add new DLC from the 2 Ps3 you choose to keep. So the first 2 ps3’s you log online within your household [after the maintenance] will be locked in, unless you deactivate one to log onto another.

  • I don’t get how people can defend this, it doesnt just restrict gamesharers’; it limits EVERYONE.

  • Deactivate accounts: Really late, but better than never.

System Limit: Agree with Kiki. Losing some customers = less money. Even if loyal costumers were to stay, they can’t make up for the lost paying people.

Really Sony, this is getting out of hand. You’re becoming like politics now. Never thought you would reach stoop such a little level.

And Philly, totally agree. First, DLC overloads on games. Now they want to rip us off on this. Seeing as they own the system, yeah, they could mess us up if they feel they are losing.

  • Also, for those people going accept what you have, please shut up. Before you know it, it’ll be down to one system and you’ll say “well, it’s better than 0” People like you make me angry. I have an Xbox account and we have been through all the junk theat Microsoft has put us through. Hate to see it happen here too becuase you guys settle for less. Haven’t you learned in school that you deserve the best? We are the customers. We hold the power. If they do stupid stuff to us, we must rebel.

That’s just what I think. Don’t mean to offend people.
