Meet Ninja Master Rioichi Cooper from Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

Glen Egan's Avatar Posted by President, Sanzaru Games

It’s been quite a while since I posted to the PlayStation.Blog – after the busy summer tradeshow schedule we have hunkered down to concentrate on making Sly Cooper: Thieves in Times the best game of 2012! Over the summer, I spent a lot of time showing our progress on the game and talking about how we are making sure we stay true to the core of the Sly Cooper series – but now I want to start talking about the NEW things we are bringing to Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for PS3

When we played the old Sly Cooper games on the PS2, we loved the stories about the Cooper clan ancestors and their various thieving abilities. Something that is really exciting and fun for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is that you can not only travel back in time to meet these ancestors but you will also have the ability to play as the Cooper Clan ancestors! As you proceed through the game each episode you encounter features a new time period with a new playable ancestor. Each new member of the Cooper clan has their own unique and powerful abilities that opens up a whole new range of game play in the huge environments. This is one of the coolest aspects of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – meeting these characters, learning more about them, and then getting to experience a whole new set of kick-ass game moves and skills that you have never seen before. Each time a new character in production comes on line and is added to the game, they instantly become my new favorite character of the series!

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for PS3

The first ancestor we want to show off is Rioichi Cooper, the master of the Ninja Spire Landing! We were introduced to him back in the original Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and learned about his cool Ninja ability. Now, when you get to play as Rioichi, you will see how much more powerful the original master’s techniques are. For instance, by focusing his energy Rioichi can execute his Leaping Dragon Technique and span great distances between spires.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for PS3

Rioichi, it turns out, is not only an uber-Ninja but is also the inventor of sushi, his famous restaurant providing the perfect cover for a night-stalking ninja thief. We really wanted to explore the character of each of Sly’s ancestors (they are all very different in both ability and personality), and this leads to some very entertaining dialogue as they meet and get to know their descendant and his crew. But of course, once Sly is united with his ancestor he becomes one of the gang, hanging out in the hideout ready to venture out for some Ninja Thieving fun at a moment’s notice.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for PS3

Keep your eyes peeled for the December issue of Game Informer magazine, Tim Turi stopped by the studio last month and took a look at Rioichi in action so you can get to read about his impressions of the game there. Anyway, that’s it for now, but don’t worry, I will be back soon to talk about new characters and other cool stuff in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time as we head towards the new year!

It took you guys 5 years to get back on track with this project. Sucker Punch really pissed everyone off with leaving Sly Cooper. Now Sanzaru comes and fixes it. Why are you idiots not telling the world the release date?! You wait five years to tell everyone there’s a new Sly game in the middle of 2011 and tell us it comes out 2012! For you’re guys’ sake we hope this game lives up to its well-made reputation!

Got several questions for you Glen, and if you don’t reply, that’s okay.
1. Is there multiplayer?
2. Will you at least tell us which month or quarter of 2012 the game comes out?
3. Are treasures acquired the same way as in Sly 2?
4. Will vaults be harder to find and crack?
5. Will this be the most dramatic game in the Sly Cooper series?
6. Will there be a difficulty setting? I’m not sure how you can make it harder than it already is.
7. Can you ask GameInformer to let you be on the cover of one of their issues?
8. Are the trophies going to look the same in Thieves in Time as they did in the Sly Collection?
9. Will there be references to previous Sly Cooper games?

Once again, sorry about the first comment on you guys telling the world about Thieves in Time like that. I really want this game. I envy and love you guys for getting back on track with this project. The Sly series was one of the best games ever on PS2. I have some more questions for Glen Egan.

1. Will there be some missions where the Sly Cooper gang work cooperatively like Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One.
2. Was the El Jefe bossfight the coup’ de grade of the Fuedal Japan episode or is it similar to the “A Cold Alliance” episode in Sly 3 where Sly battled General Tsao for Bentley’s computer.
3. Does Clockwerk appear in the game. The fact the game happens in the past, and that comment in the hideout treasure wall about the eagle claw being “perfect for rebuilding a mechanical owl” part, are huge clues.

hi, this seems really cool :), and the graphics looks awesome too. Hope that some of the ancestors are women to, and it would be really cool if Carmelita also was a playable character, like she was in Sly 3 but with more actions and possibilities. If she is one of the characters that you can play free as in the hub-world’s I will be really happy :)

In Sly 2 and Sly 3 there is also a clear structure on the episodes and the things that are going to happen. when you’re done with one episode you’re not going back to that place. I am wondering if in the new sly cooper game there will be a storyline which makes you jump back and forth from different episodes.

Mr.Vebari I totally agree with you. Carmelita has to come back Sanzaru. For cyring out loud she’s the love interest of Sly Cooper and has appeared in every game to date. If you guys bring her back, just consider putting new moves in. The shooting and the spinning attack were cool but you can do better. We’re still waiting and counting on you Glen Egan.

Greetings Glen Egan and the rest of the lovely team at Sanzaru Games! Glad to see the amazing update! I’ve been waiting for an update since I first heard about Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time in July. A few questions that I think and would love for you to answer or hint at.

1.) I know Sly’s ancestors will be playable characters… the thing that’s killing me is… will we get to play as Sly’s father? Or even meet him? Will he show up anytime during Thieves in Time?

2.) Are you and the rest of Sanzaru Games taking Co-Op/2 Player/Multiplayer Online gameplay into consideration?

3.) Can you please reply to my post?(;

4.) GREAT JOB! I love you guys at Sanzaru! For bringing back THE best game series of all time back to the PS3! The best game of 2012 without a doubt! You guys don’t “Suck” or ruined a perfect classic game. Like how Crash and Spyro got ruined. This is my most anticipated game of all time! I’ve never had the feeling of waiting for a game this bad! Hope you guys keep me at the edge of my seat! You certainly have a proud (and many others) Sly followers and fans!

Keep on workin’ Sanzaru!

ATTENTION SANZARU: If you do multi-player please DO NOT do it like Ratchet and Clank All-4-One, or at least make that world mode an *option. Multi-player is great in concept, but it ends up making the single-player experience MUCH less interesting by making travel through the game world much more linearly-constrained. I have given up on R&C A-4-1 because I find it really boring in single-player mode because of this. It’s like a glorified side-scroller now :(

This is my fifth, I think, yeah fifth reply to the improvements Sanzaru is doing to Sly Cooper. Just saying again you guys rock, everyone loves you for reviving this series, it will probably be the best one yet, everyone’s waiting for a release date that’s not just 2012, hoping for a reply like these other fellows on the blog have received from you Glen Egan, ultimate game creator of all time in the universe. Keep doing what you’re doing.

The designs look a lot better since they first came out, but why does rioichi have only one cane? (he should have two) and as I recall, he had long black hair that covered one of his eyes. I always thought that maybe its covered because of the first encounter he had with clockwerk, who clawed the hidden one :B

Sly cooper has been, is, and always will be my favorite game. i loved them when i was younger and i played all the original games on ps2. and loved what you did on the remastered version. one thing i would love to see though, is a difficulty setting. because after you beat the games as many times as i have, you wish it could get harder, and keep the challenge up. so excited to play as Sly’s ancestors, (Rioichi is my Favorite). If i have to I’ll sell Modern
Warfare 3 to buy this game!!!!

I cannot wait for this game! I’m such a huge fan of the series, I actually only bought a PS2 to play these games and it has always remained my favourite series.

I love the art direction you took! The world just looks far more beautiful then it ever did in the previous games and the characters just have so much more life in them. I really love the design of Rioichi and can’t wait to play him! And Sly looks better then ever :D (He’s always been my favourite playstation character :D). I love how the boss battles look too, they just look so much more fun and epic then they were in previous sly games. The disguises idea sounds really fun too :D, I loved them in Sly 3 but I’m so glad you’re taking them further and giving them their own abilities and everything :).

To be honest I think you guys are doing an even better job than Suckerpunch and I’m so glad you decided to make this game! Also as much as I want this game to come out and no matter how desperate I am, please don’t rush it. Do everything you guys want to do and make this the best game ever to come onto the PS3! It already looks like its there mind :)

Tucson1234Dog said:

December 10th, 10:03 pm

I’m back again. blackmacebeauty2, I completely agree. You guys really shouldn’t rush this game, but please try at least to get this on video game shelves ASAP. Also, is Sucker Punch going to make you guys the producers of all future Sly Cooper games?

You guys should make an online co-op kinda thing, where your friends (from your friends list) can join and play co-op. Or at least let us play minigames (like in sly 3) online.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but with each update you guys at Sanzaru are earning a bit more respect , confidence and over all cudos from me. Why didn’t you guys wait to show a gameplay video until Thieves in Time had about HALF as good of graphics as it has now? You guys got a lot of grief from fans. But I wasn’t upset at the graphics-I would tel you why I was upset, but with all the cool updates, I forgot.

I like how you brought back the SWEET Boss Fights from the first game. The newer ones from Sly 2 and Sly 3 seemed very beat-em’-up and boring except Bentley’s fight with Jean Bison. PLEASE make the fights as creative and epic as the Boss Fights from “Sly Cooper and the Thievious Raccoonus

One more thing. PLEASE DON’T MAKE THIEVES IN TIME AS MUSHY AS SLY 3 WAS!!! There, I said it. I will probably catch some heat from relationship-liking people here, but WHY did Sucker Punch think mushy relationships in Sly 3? It made parts of the game boring. I like Penelope, but why was she so flirty with Sly?

Well that’s all. I hope you release any new gameplay videos or even OLD gameplay videos with no comentary, like the PAX gameplay video.

Peace out, Spyro453.

They game looks AMAZEING so far! im am very excited for it !!!!

I have a few questions though for GLEN EGAN:

1). will there be ANY type of multiplayer/ co-op on Sly 4? if not could you all please think about doing this because it would give us something to do after we play the story mode like 300 times lol :)

2). will we be able to replay our favorite missions ?

That is all of my questions….PLEASE REPLY.

P.S. sanzaru games you are doing an awesome job. thank you for bringing one of my favorite games back to life :)
