PS3 System Software Update (v.4.00)

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by SVP, Marketing & PlayStation Network

A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

Other changes to take effect with this update include:

  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    • Game patches
    • System software
    • Recommended games and videos
    • Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback.

It was announced at least a month ago that Cross Game Chat is not possible, and will never come to the PS3. The current RAM in the PS3 cannot handle it. Do you people not read the articles?

@PlayStation Development Team Guess this will be a PS4 Request

When Everyone is Ready they Will Have the Option to Launch the Game Once the Game is Loaded or Even While the Game is Loading They can Chat Via Text or Voice Even While Waiting for Games to Load up to Play.

Once in the Game the Game will use the Party System to Use as a main Source of Playing Online Gaming.

Make this happen SONY (Make.Belive)

Thanks for Reading Skater_Ricky,

►@cmp13 it was announced but never announced on the PlayStation Blog which I find more Official then crammed in a website

►►”@PlayStation Blog Reps. @Jeff R. @Sid and @Eric L.” Not sure why you guys didn’t really post this on here about the word that the Cross Game Voice Chat will not be included in the UI of PS3. Might be best to Officially announce this on the New PlayStation Blog Podcast in one of the Episodes that way the rest that keep on requesting to have it for the PS3 will stop complaining and better understand its capabilities and its NON capabilities of the PS3.

i’m disappointed at this seemly weak update as well.since most of the stuff are for playstation plus users, i guess its over for people like me that dont like/want to pay for features.thanks to the people that supported the other console premium stuff, that is the reason why we are in this mess. to all of you playstation plus users i hope you feel pretty special about paying for stuff that otherwise would have been there without a monthly fee.enjoy!

Dear Sony,

Please start to add some cool new features. I remember we used to get features back to back. To mention some of them, in-game XMB, trophy support, in-game music support, PS Home, Netflix, xmb invites, revamped PS Store etc. What have we received recently in the last year? NOTHING! Unless you count those “security measures”. So darn disappointing everytime you guys release a new firmware. Please fix, thank you!

Your loyal customer,

That’s it?? and here I thought this would be a major update because it has jumped from 3.73 to 4.00.. I hate to speculate, but as a loyal SONY PS fan, I have gotten my hopes up too high for nothing. All I see here for a 4.00 firmware update is all for PS Plus subscribers (I WAS a PS Plus subscriber). I was hoping for something like Comcast app, HBO app and other live streaming stuff for TV and etc.. What was interesting was that I was guessing that since XBOX 360 is getting a major update in software this December and 3DS is getting an update as well, I couldn’t help but guess that Sony will have a better software update.. Every year when it gets close to December, I am always speculating what Sony will bring to the PS3 since they said PS3 still has a lot to offer. Oh well, there is nothing great about this update but that doesn’t bother me… FOR NOW.. , since I have a lot of awesome games to continue playing (BF3, MW3, U3, Batman Arkham City, Ace Combat 6, Need for Speed the Run, Assassin’s Creed Revelations and more) for the time being until PS Vita is released, which I really can’t wait to get my sweaty hands on it.. LOL.. ^_^

I’m pretty sure this is my very first time posting to the blog. Reason I’m doing this now is to get the disappointment and frustration I feel about this update off my chest. If I had the money available, I’d get an xbox right now. As a totally blind gamer, I feel I’ve made a huge mistake by purchasing a Playstation 3. I don’t know how many of you know this, but on the Xbox, you’re able to access most content through a web browser on a PC. This works flawlessly for me, because I can use my screen reading program on my computer to get access to features such as adding/removing friends, having access to the store and so on. With the Kinect, we can do even more. Especially if the rumors I’ve heard about the new dashboard updates are true. Of course when I got my console, I had no idea this could be done. I found this out through other blind friends who own that console. TBC.

I’ve tweeted to Sony about this, emailed them, tried pretty much anything I could think of. In fact I created a blog share idea a few hours ago, and if it goes live, I’d appreciate it if you guys check it out and vote for it if you support my idea. I’ve pretty much given up on Sony at this point. If the 4.0 update doesn’t have these features, then they’ll never come.

@XxDeathDoctorxX I Agreed all PS4 Should include a Headset that way it would make the PlayStation Community get along and communicate with each other thus enjoy games to the MAX.

I myself Enjoy Battlefield 3 when the mics are work well and thus always have a better score knowing and working as a team in Battlefield 3

@Kajax I agree the XMB is kinda clunky and thus would in mine and your opinion would improve the speed of the PS3 performance and hopefully thus include Cross Game Cross Chat for None Online Games and Online Games to have a enjoyable painless experience to not be interrupted in having to answer a message in the middle of a game and if your really busy would have Voice Mail and leave you a 30-60 second clip of Voice to record so can easily answer and leave a reply voice mail back to that PSN gamer if there Offline or Online and we always have the Grief Report there so if it was something that would be offensive we could report it.

@Battlefield 3 Gamer’s that’s Reading if you have BF3 and use a Headset Regularly please add me. I play between normally 7pm – 12pm Midnight Central Standard Time.

So will there be a subsequent PSP update (v7.00) that makes it think it’s a PS Vita?

DudeItsKyle said:

November 29th, 6:28 pm

Is it a disappointing update? Sure especially for being a whole new number. They should have called it 3.80 or something. But it’s not a horrible update either. I agree with the notion of reworking the whole OS. I love the XMB for it simplicity so I keep the same look but rework it to make it less process intensive and add a whole bunch of features that couldn’t be added in before. Like cross game chat, I’m not no programmer yet but I think if they recreate the whole OS and make this a feature from the start it could be possible, it might not be possible now because the current XMB can be sluggish at times.

DudeItsKyle said:

November 29th, 6:28 pm

A better In Game OS menu would be cool too as the the current XMB in game menus are horribly sluggish. Also a better trophy updating feature and make it free for everyone. The current way Sony handles the trophy syncs is out dated it was even outdated when it first released Im guessing this is another problem with the XMBs architectural why it cant be done so reworking the OS could possibly fix this. Also there’s is one feature I would absolutly love to have if they reworked the OS, Duel Account Logins at all times event during being on the XMB so both you and your pal can earn trophys at the same time, check each others separate friends list, messages, and trophy collection at the same time. The next thing I want is completely not needed but would be awesome is a avatar feature like the NXE, but use sackboys instead as that would be beyond awesome.

DudeItsKyle said:

November 29th, 6:30 pm

Also one more thing rework the updating structure. Don’t have so we have to redownload the whole OS again as that’s extremely annoying update in patches. That’s also a must.

JEC94 said:

Sync trophy information ? whats this?

New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages, for every user?

Amos-22 said:

November 29th, 6:32 pm

I can’t wait for the next gen xbox so I can justify buying a new system. Sony is way behind and these updates suck. I will never buy a playstation again…

IceColdEskimo said:

November 29th, 6:32 pm

So we get nothing unless we’re a plus member… that does kinda suck

dilbig5 said:

November 29th, 6:34 pm

And there is nothing at all wrong with the XMB. Everything is in a neat and tidy order that is simple to find. Why would you wanna change that? It’s not like you’re playing the XMB, you’re playing games.

Kitten said:

November 29th, 6:35 pm

Can you PLEASE have the firmware available as a PC download at the same time it’s released and required on the PS3? It takes so long to download on the PS3, but it’s not available on your site for hours. It seems like it should be simple to update the firmware site at the same time.

x9248 said:

November 29th, 6:35 pm

Just updated to this. Right before I had downloaded the Voltron demo, now I went to buy it but can’t download the unlock key. Gives error 80029519. I’ve read to deactivate and reactivate the system, but that also pops up the error code.

I’m so over you Sony.

bldudas said:

November 29th, 6:37 pm

So, this update lets us transfer data between the PS3 and Vita when it comes out? That’s good. And the message filters are nice to have. If you don’t like what this update does, simple don’t update your system, then you can’t go online.

It’s better than the Xbox’s update, which I don’t want.

DarksunDaFirst said:

November 29th, 6:38 pm

So basically, this update means very very little to the majority of the gamers that use PSN? Whoopty Do, you’ve updated the friends list filters.

I’m tired of these updates which do ALMOST, if anything at all, NOTHING for me and many other users. I don’t play Portable Games, nor do I plan on buying a Vita. There is a reason why I have a gaming console, so that when I’m at home, I can play games. When I’m not at home, I don’t plan on spending time playing games. And I’m not some casual gamer either, I play quite a lot.

My question is, why am I required to download something that I’m not going to use or care about? Waste of my time. Thanks Sony.

bldudas said:

November 29th, 6:39 pm

Oh, and I find nothing wrong with the XMB. I find the PS3’s dashboard quite professional.

bigboi_21 said:

November 29th, 6:39 pm

I think Sony said a while back they had no plans to change the XMB. And as far as cross game chat. That will never be possible because the PS3 has only 256MB of RAM. When ur playing a game, all the RAM is dedicated to that game. So unfortunately we won’t have cross game chat until PS4

“If you don’t like what this update does, simple don’t update your system, then you can’t go online.

It’s better than the Xbox’s update, which I don’t want.”

That’s the point. This update has nothing to do with what most gamers do online. Unless the filtering system is something magnificent (which it isn’t), why is the update required to go online? There is no practical reason for it.

I just put my kid down to go to sleep for a couple of hours, I wanted to get some gaming in. This wasted a good chunk of that.

Only optional if you don’t mind not signing onto the PSN.
