A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:
- PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
- Game patches
- System software
- Recommended games and videos
- Sync trophy information
- New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

I don’t care about the number. I’m glad they got this out of the way so they can focus on bringing other features to the PS3.
This is also a first (I think) for a company. Technically this could count as Vita’s first system update.
Any chance they’ll be a firmware update that will allow playback of AVCHD (3D) 2.0 BDR’S?
I still believe key issues for the PS3 has still yet to be resolved.
1. Why is the PS3 clock always wrong? For some reason it always becomes 2-3 minutes i am sure this is not just me and my friends who have this issue. Every time i have to go to date and time and reset the time through the internet than the next week it happens again.
2. Delete trophy’s with 0 percent if we played a game and didn’t like it there is no point to keep a 0 percent completion of the game it just looks ugly. We should get the option to delete it.
3. The automatic update for cloud saves For Plus members doesn’t always work this is day 3 in which i got a new game on Monday and still until this day the PS3 has not uploaded my game progress to the Cloud. And yes i did click on the option to upload the data.
4. Why do i always get a message that says please wait the sync operation is being performed. If i haven’t collected any new trophy’s and i click on the trophy icon i shouldn’t get this message.
5. The comparison with trophy’s with friends is still very bad we really need an instant trophy comparison if my 360 can compare achievements instantly with friends i am sure the PS3 can do the same.
6. There is a time delay when going over some of the icons on the XMB where nothing would show up this should be looked into.
7. Also some new Plus features would be nice as of now i am on the fence to renew my subscription i don’t feel like i am getting my moneys worth. The best part of the Plus features is the cloud save but the whole automatic update is really bad to be only for plus. I know tons of us have satellite or cable TV and i am sure its not a paid feature for the software to update itself. My DVR updates every morning and I don’t pay a penny more to have that feature.

These are features I’d like to see in future System Updates:
1. Complete support for MKV formated video files . “Complete” meaning that the PS3 will need to be able to recognize / understand that the MKV file may be using the ASS structure for storage of “soft” subtitles that can be switched on or off just like a BD or DVD movie.
2. Enhanced support for backwards compatible PS3’s: Ability to purchase NTSC-J game licenses. I have an older PS3 (60Gb HDD, 4 USB, card readers) that can play PS2 games. As a test, I inserted an old NTSC-J PS2 game. The PS3 acknowledged that the disc was PS2 software. Instead of getting a warnng message about conflicting territory, I would have liked to be taken to the Playstation Store, so I could purchase a license to unlock the NTSC-J game.

Just found out what the health warning is for!!! It’s for the 3D gaming that’s coming out and that is the reason why it could cause seizures while playing 3D, but no one is trying to be your doctor. They just saving there butt, because some idiot could try to sue them for not putting the health warning there. In this world people can pretty much get sued for anything like not putting on cups warning singes that its hot and etc. People are dumb that sue just to get money and make companies shut down, so stop complaining about XMB and other stuff. They can do whatever to the console dash because it’s their product not yours, but yeah you may own the console, but not the XMB or the updates they put out. 3D gaming is cool, so stop whining. This is not a flame in any shape our form, just trying to help people understand better about products etc and how they work.

The shear amount of entitlement most gamers have is nauseating to say the least. Sony has never promised you anything let alone updating the PS3 in any way. Many of you probably never saw the original launch of the PS3, no in game XMB no trophies, practically nothing. The PS3 has come a long way from the perspective of a day one owner. Remember these updates are FREE, at no cost to the customer. You are still enjoying the core experience are you not? Relax people…..Maybe instead of [DELETED] about it all the time, provide feedback in a positive way and ask Sony to implement some possible features.
Example: Thanks Sony for the awesome update! I want to point being a PS+ subscriber I think that the automatic download feature should be available to every PS3 user. Also I would like to see a few small changes that the community has expressed interest in. Mainly, a possible update to the player card, I love showing off my trophies and such and I think you can do better on the presentation. Additionally, I like idea of PS button auto read message (new filtering options are sweet). Deleting 0% trophy data would be nice as well. I know you guys are working your tails off and I think this is one of many updates to come. The holidays is around the corner and I hope you guys are working something special for the PlayStation Nation. Thanks again for the vita update, as it is about to launch in japan and they can work out all the kinks before it releases for us in Feb. I can’t wait to get my hands on it! Should I delete all of my PSP/PS1/Minis from from my PS3s HDD? I have so many of those that not even half of them can fit on my PSPs memory stick. Having them all stored on my PS3 for quick easy transferring was a great feature and saved a lot of time. Downloading and installing directly from the PSP or Media Go takes way longer than doing so on PS3. Since we can no longer transfer said games I suppose there’s no longer any reason to keep them stored on my PS3. :(

Strangely enough it is still possible to copy purchased Video content from PS3 to PSP. Oh Sony. Once again forgetting the first and foremost your consoles are for playing video games above all else.
To everyone asking for an XMB redesign, don’t count on it. A lot of people have spent money on a few themes or even a lot of them and Sony would be getting complaints and whatnot about refunding money for something that wouldn’t work on a new XMB. There could be an option to switch between the old and new but I don’t see that coming any time soon either. Besides, it works, its simple, and you don’t fix what isn’t broken (although personally I wouldn’t mind seeing that PS+ icon removed since it shows up in about two or so other places on the XMB already…).
So, where is the the BRAVIA Internet Video Link and all of its associated apps that was announced was coming to the PS3 back in January of 2010?

I would also like to chime in on having more game sorting options (namely alphabetical order), and as a PS+ member, I’d like it if my Home save files could be automatically uploaded, too. However, I don’t want each file to be uploaded (I could do without the Scripts one), so how ’bout figuring out how to selectively auto-upload files?

@358, might be the dumbest thing i ever heard. Themes? They can still work with a new XMB, Xbox has themes and avatars in fact thousands more then the meagre ps3 offering, and everytime they IMPROVE live they still work, LOL.
So the biggest changes youve made is a warning at system start up…Yeah cause I dont get sick of seeing that before every game. How bout some HBOGO? The free version of Hulu? Crackle that isnt watched through the browser? Pandora? Pick a cool app that other technologies are putting on bluray players,phones and tvs. I think I’ll pass on getting the vita and retire from gaming after the PS3, I dont like the look of the industry’s future

I’m loving the hey your an idiot warning I now get every time I turn my ps3 on. The wii has a warning too and I cant stand it. I like the XMB but yeah it can be a little slow in game. I dont care about cross game chat. In game music is decided by the developer, so if you want that you gotta talk to the people that make the game you want it in and yes there are games that allow in game music, Nier for example does and no it won’t always say on the back of the box like some guy said earlier, you just gotta try it. Nier,Trinity Universe, and Resonance of Fate all allow in game music and none of them say on the back of the box. My only real XMB gripe is the web browser. Tis crap and its woefully obvious to anyone thats actually used it.

And I agree that the in-game XMB is needlessly cluttered by greyed out icons, why?
Should let me decide if I want to give up that 32MB of memory for the in-game XMB or use it for in-game and eliminate the in-game XMB altogether if i choose, this would free up a SPE as well and this could be used to suplement in-game performance.
4.0 = nothing of interest for PS3 users, this means it should have been Vita update 1.0.
The Vita sounds way worse then when it was announced, and raping us on propriorty memory cards which cost way too much sealed the deal for me, no way will I waste money on another Sony product which will continue to loose features during its lifetime.

While I look forward to updates, I would have expected this to be more substantial. Even without a major XMB overhaul or some other big change, a lot of minor changes would also be appreciated. There are plenty to choose from in the blog.share section. Take the same approach as Deangelo Vickers proposed in The Office:

screw you sony! i just bought a psp bundle for my son and you go and strip all copy support for it. and you forgot to inform your tech people. i tried calling sony and all i got were studdering morons who have no clue about this fw update. i should have walked away from the playstation brand after you screwed me over the ps2 hardrive/final fantasy bundle

They made us sign a new agreement that states we are no longer legal owners of the PS3.
It comes from a ruling that people can hack their Iphones because they own them, People hacked PS3’s and went to court only to be faced with the presidence of this Iphone case.
So sony made us sign over legal ownership of our PS3’s a few months ago so we can not hack them, take them apart or show anyone else how to do these things without facing jail time.
The option was a joke though:
Either give up all online features and access to all your purchased content over the last 5 yrs, or sign over every legal right associated with our PS3’s. This is why we no longer have any legal right to sue Sony.
And no Sony doesnt care if you destroy their PS3, as long as you dont look inside afterwards, LOL.
Most of you didnt read this agreement and just hit accept, i have been tryin to inform people of this for months.
If you dont believe me take apart your Ps3, take some pics, and post them online with instructions how to, maybe label a few things, see how long you stay out of jail.
It all started with removal of PS2 compatibility, then other os, the big hack of 2011, now we no longer have legal rights in any way on our PS3’s, PSN, or likey any Sony related community or products.

Ok, since I was living in Skyrim all of last night, I didn’t have the update. After reading so many complaints, I was a little worried I might have a problem.
I just updated my 2 PS3’s. Took 5 minutes each. Then on reboot, saw the red background (can I make that purple?) & the standard only-in-America-are-stupid-things-like-this-necessary warning for 2 seconds & that went away on its own, & I’m back @ my selected dynamic theme. I should have known, it’s much ado about nothing rants on the blog. As usual.
I couldn’t find anywhere to customize my auto-sync, though. I’ll figure it out later or forget about it.
Honestly, do some of you only live to complain about everything Sony does?
