PS3 System Software Update (v.4.00)

A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

Other changes to take effect with this update include:

  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    • Game patches
    • System software
    • Recommended games and videos
    • Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback.

  • How about they add a fix for in game chat for battlefield 3 Since EA is blaming it on Sony.

  • @396 DragonWolfJD – Thanks. I’ve been with a friend working on this and it’s…. Well, get a vita or lose original features. Again. AKA – Extortion.

  • Really regretting that I recently upped my PlayStation Plus subscription, because I’m going to go buy an Xbox 360 this weekend now. That new warning message at start-up was really the last straw for me. I can’t continue using the XMB when the 360 is getting a really great modern looking menu in about a week.

    XMB = Early 2000s
Xbox 360 Metro UI = Present

  • You’ve removed the ability to download PS1 classics and minis onto the PS3 and then copy them to your PSP. The copy option is no longer there. The only option is to download them directly to your PSP.

The PROBLEMS – All PSP’s are shipped with IEEE 802.11b chips, so a download speed over a wireless network is (with the exception of a ver advanced router) is almost completely crippled. Not to mention PSP’s don’t support WPA2. WPA-TKIP is (most of us well know) no longer secure and not all routers support WPA-AES. So, again, unless I have a top-notch, expensive router I have to completely open my home network in order to download PS1 classics and minis onto my PSP. That’s ASSUMING I even have a wireless home network !

This extortion you keep throwing at your original customers has got to be checked. Yet again you are taking away features that were included when I paid for BOTH products.

I’m calling Nolan Hass (San Francisco Bay Area – Sr. Manager, Consumer Services at Sony Computer Entertainment America) and either recieving a full refund for my current psp and the purchases made for it or I’ll be lawyering up.

  • SONY GET IT TOGETHER..YOU GOTTA KEEP IS FRESH..PEOPLE DONT WANT THESE LITTLE A333 UPDATES NO MORE …GIVES USE SOMETHING THAT SHOWS US WHY WE OWN A PS3…OR YOU GONE LOSE

  • Does anyone knows the reason behind removing the ability to transfer games from the ps3 to the psp? Thanks

  • @ 401 – By the vita or go away. That’s THE ONLY thing SONY cares about. New money…

  • 402 is right. But HOLY CRAP THERE IS A HEALTH WARNING AT THE BEGINNING NOW!!!!!! Anyways I dont think this deserves the 4.00 stamp. Come home from school okay yeah update required *click* HOLY CRAP 4.00! Jumped on the interwebs to see what was new and honestly i could care less about the additions.

  • Major upgrade but nothing major released. Where is the ability to add friend or chat with friends from the Web? What about improving communication, chat and voice with friends? That is why I stick with my Xbox for on-line gaming… Sony needs to improve miles their social and online side.

  • This is my first time posting a comment on the blog but i just had to…
Please take out the health warning!!! It’s like you don’t care about UI at all

  • I also dislike the health warning and i wish we would get more space for the online saves. 150MB is really not enough.

  • Sony my user made dynamic themes aren’t working now!,wtf?

  • @404 Blasphemous1,

I believe you mean “I’ll see you in arbitration Sony.”

There was a PSN update a few months back that if you agreed to it it “took away your rights to Sue Sony”. There was an option to mail them a letter to opt out.

  • I do not think I am the only one that has considered this. Why haven’t PSN or Playstation in general updated the “Group Chat” for when your playing different games but can still talk to you friends?

  • twistedvivid@ ahh its already been confirmed impossible to have cross game chat on PS3 its impossible due to memory issues, and a simple update “even a major” could not give the PS3 cross game chat you need upgraded hardware so it will never happen.

  • Seeing as how we can no longer store games on our PS3s for transfer to PSP, I hope Sony is prepared to have the already slow PS Store downloads further crippled now that people must re-download a game each and every time we want it on our PSPs. =)

  • @413 TwinDad

I know. Trust me, I KNOW ;-) But it isn’t impossible. The problem and (sony’s whole tactic) is that too many of us think “there’s nothing we can do”. There are still consumer rights. I’ll admit they’ve made it very hard and very frustrating to do, but it can be done. It’s being done everyday.
    Check out http://www.techfirm.com/
Sony Playstation Network Revised Terms of Use
A Forbes contributor writes that Sony has attempted to bind consumers to an arbitration clause and a class action waiver in revised Terms of Use that purports to cover the Playstation Network.
    According to the Forbes story:
“It’s a slap in the face to consumers already weary of the company’s practices, as they’re essentially saying they could have another privacy breaching screw-up like the hack, and you wouldn’t have recourse against them in the form of a class action lawsuit. There’s currently a lawsuit filed against Sony for the hacking breach by the Rothken law firm on behalf of the 77 million customers affected, but this does not fall under these new terms of service, and will be going forward.”
There are those of us that will not fold……

  • Stop asking for Cross-Game chat, or a party system. The ram is being used for games, and there isn’t enough ram left over for Cross-Game chat, or a party system. We would of had it by now, we’ll have to wait until PS4, or if somehow they release a new model with more ram of the PS3.

  • I guess the real update we ever had was the xmb availability when pressing the home button, and the trophy intergration. Since then there has been crap, I guess Sony will never give us a REAL UPDATE since they are already working on the PS4. I’m tired of updating every other month for crappy stuff that’s useless. Wasting space in my HDD. I will not renew my PS plus anymore, going back to XBL.

  • Can’t wait

  • What they really need to update is the internet browser. I use my ps3 to check my email and i cant even get onto yahoo.com. Plus the fact that it freezes my ps3 almost everytime i try to surf. I know the ps3 isnt just for the internet, but if you put a feature on something, make sure it works.

  • Sony,

Why is PSP functionality completely gone? I have PS+ and now I can’t put any of the PSone content I got onto the handheld. Please tell me this is some bizarre accident and you are not removing PSP features to make the Vita look better or some nonsense. This is incredibly frustrating and I only get angrier the more I think about it. I bought my PSP only because it could load PSone classics that I purchased from my PS3. Now the PSP is completely useless.

Also, is it really necessary to have health warnings? Really? There are health warnings before every game in recent memory. And now I have to sit through TWO unskippable warnings if I want to play a game?

This update is unreal, and infuriating.

  • Basically the PS3 hardware has been maxed out cause graphics are dated now even on the 360 which is why next gen will come soon. The 360 has 512MB of RAM while the PS3 has half that since the guys decided to rely on the Cell processor for everything i guess they figured oh well.

I will purchase the PS4 but hopefully the interface is a bit more unique cause i dont like the way vita looks either how about something more professional since im not a child. If Sony would take out all the crap and clutter on the XMB which is baked into the core there wouod be a little room i suppose however above all if Sony would come out and just say whats going on this would stop and if Kevin Butler ever leaves so shall i cause the XBOX is looking like a better media solution overall

  • PLEASE TAKE OUT THE FRICKIN HEALTH WARNING! ITS SO ANNOYING! IM PRETTY SURE NOBODY WANTS IT!

  • This is annoying. Twice today watching stuff on youtube via the PS3 browser has frozen the system upon trying to close the video. That part is nothing new. What is new that upon bootup I get message saying the system was shutdown improperly and may be corrupted. Now I have to sit through this “checking and restoring file system” thing. Is this going to happen every single time the browser crashes the system from now on?

  • Having problems on changing avatar and my downloadeds on my hard drive games that already on there and i’ll redownloaded & it said (AN ERROR OCCURRED DOING INSTAL OPERATION 80029780) wha to do? playstation company? [DELETED]

  • Haven’t tried to move anything to my PSP yet, but this news is disturbing.. Could care less about the warning screen, see it (and promptly ignore it) everywhere else, why not ignore it on boot as well? Excited about the Vita launch, so please, do whatever you have to do to make it go smoothly! Just don’t make my PSP obsolete!!

  • Can we get voice party chat or something new and worthwhile please next time?

  • How about increasing the friendlist CAP? I hate deleting my current friends to add a new friend who just got a ps3 :(

  • Like others have said
A way to have XGC (it is possible just not something they want to put on this gen)
A new XMB(maybe at least a bubble menu if your using PS move instead of a DS3)
An updated Web Browser or even a dedicated YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter app for the PS3.

I don’t want the PS2 emulator seeing as the PS2 games I loved are getting or are already remade on PS3 in HD with trophy support. But seeing as people other than me would like it it would be nice to have it as a download off the store.

And please add a feature to disable the warning… that’s an extra 3 seconds wasted in start-up.

See you on PS3/VITA in the near future
    Cr4zedchris

  • I really expected something big like an XMB upgrade [overhaul] and a new browser as a complimenary addition. but this? so has the ps3 reached its limit? i guess yea.

  • REGARDING PSP:

I just found out that you can still copy games to your PSP. When you download a game, instead of installing it, hit Triangle and then Copy. Unfortunately that means I had to redownload the PSone games I bought yesterday.

You can still do if after installation. The install file doesn’t self-delete anymore. So you have to copy it over before you manually delete the install file.

    Retarded.

  • (1/2) Well, with the new update, my HDMI resolution is now kaput. I was playing fine at 1080p last night after downloading the new update and when I turned it on about 30 minutes ago, it’s stuck at 480p. Now, I’ve already tried manually resetting it by holding down the power button until 2 beeps; I change the video settings countless times and when I thought it was outputting 1080p like it showed me on the screen and saved it, it reverted back to 480p.

I didn’t want this update but I had no choice in the matter. This is unnecessary and should only matter to those who are actually going to be buying the PS Vita. I could care less about the Playstation Plus features even though I am a Plus member.

I really hope you get a patch out that fixes the resolution problem that you have caused, Sony. I’m not the only one who has this problem. I’ve already read about 2-5 posts on IGN SO FAR about this. By the end of the week, I’m sure I’ll be reading a lot more.

  • (2/2) Note–I don’t have the AV Cable and I have no idea where it is; whether I lost it on a trip or it was stolen. I have yet to try that method but I’m sure it’ll just show the 480p resolution that I used to originally play in when I first got the PS3 and then bought a new HD TV specifically to play in higher resolutions.

My TV and my Xbox still get their respective resolution settings; 480-720 for TV and 480-1080p for Xbox.

    What gives?

Have any of y’all encountered this problem as well?

  • Update: Problem solved. Make sure to also check the format for your TV and set it to FULL.

    Sorry guys.

    Cheers

  • HEY PS YOU NEED TO FIX THE HULU UPDATE THE BLUETOOTH PS3 REMOTE NO LONGERS WORKS ON THAT APP

  • Well that’s yet another disappointment. Is Sony ever going to address any of the problems on the PS3 that need addressing? Why can M$ release useful updates at least once a year but Sony cant release one in 5 years?

  • It’s soo sad that the PS Vita will get cross game chat and the PS3 can’t. Like, really?

  • I don’t understand how this is 4.0. This seems more like a minor patch in the 3.XX version. Am I missing something?

  • I would appreciate some help, i can’t sign in to PSN. I am using the same connection on XBOX360 and connecting to XBOX Live was fine. I tried all the suggestions…getting several different error codes, the latest one 80710B23. This happened after downloading and installing 4.00 update. I updated via internet and not USB. Any help would be appreciated or has also if yall are reporting the same issue…thanks

  • To those asking for cross game party chat…
IT WON’T HAPPEN. Get over it. Sony said this a LONG time ago. PS Vita has more RAM than the PS3, that is why Vita gets the cross game chat. (And do remember, the PS3 is a 2006 console…)

To those complaining about this update…
Why? Are you seriously that offended that this is called v. 4.00 and only adds Vita support, and are you SERIOUSLY infuriated by a 4 second Health warning on boot up? It seems like people are making a big deal out of nothing.

  • Anyone else having problems with dynamic/animated themes not working anymore?

  • @Vortuminius

The Health Warning is not nothing. Just how many freaking splash screens must we go through to play games? We see the company logo, game engine, ‘this game saves automatically to HDD. Press x to continue’, 3d warning, in game health warning, epilepsy warning, etc. and now we have to see the same warning on PS3 startup.

  • 4.0 breaks Hulu Plus! :-(

  • This is awesome. The update got more options. The options to decide who mails you who sends you friends request. That is epic.

About time you release and update. I support it. I get excited everytime we get an update. Turning on my PS3 and alerting me an new update.

    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    WELL DONE!

  • Reading these comments makes me loose faith in humanity…..

  • Since this update I can’t get my Bluetooth to connect with my PS3. I know my Bluetooth works with the PS3 because it s the PS3 Bluetooth. Any one else having problems like this?

  • I haven’t updated my PS3 system yet so I was reading a little bit on the new update as I was reading from a few posting on the web that everyone doesn’t seem to like that new health warning thing that pops up on the system everything to turn it on so is there a way to disable that or does everyone have to live with it?.

  • Wow, another BIG disappointment from Sony. Not surprising.

What is surprising is that they have the b@llz to call this a “4.0” system update. Really Sony? Really?
