Choplifter HD Hits PSN Tuesday (Zombies Included)

I really get a kick out of the fact that I am now considered an “indie” again after all these years. I have been making games for nearly 30 years, having built a top-five PC publishing house called Interplay around such major franchises as The Bard’s Tale, Wasteland, Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Descent and more. In the early days, I developed games for other companies and moved up the food chain to become a publisher so that I could make games “my way.” And here I sit, again readying our first major release in Choplifter HD as a digital publisher and having created the game the way I wanted. Our company tagline at Interplay was “By Gamers. For Gamers” and it is those same values we used in creating Choplifter HD.

Choplifter was a very important game when it was originally released back in 1982 and achieved #1 status at the time. Dan Gorlin, the original creator, really understood the humanness of saving little people from tough situations. It was a great action game for sure, but there was something about saving those little guys. And certainly it just never gets dull blowing things up in a big way! I felt that Choplifter would be a perfect game style to bring back, but fully realized with all the modern gameplay expectations.

Choplifter HD for PS3 (PSN)Choplifter HD for PS3 (PSN)

I’m not too fond of the word “retro game” since it sometimes conveys an over-reliance on nostalgia. I can assure you we went all out to make this a state-of-the-art game that goes way beyond the goals of the original game. We took some of the industry’s top artists and used the Unreal engine to power an intense over-the-top action experience. The entire team put its heart and soul into the game and it was great to see such passion. In fact, some people might even say we spent too much money when compared to other digital titles, but we believe that quality comes first.

We pit you against over 30 levels of mayhem that introduce a number of variables all the way to the end. You will be commanding three different helicopter types, each with its own set of upgrades. You will need to deal with your guns and keep an eye on their overheating, utilize your missiles intelligently, boosting when necessary, and of course, keep track of your fuel. You will come up against AA guns, RPGs, jets, tanks, snipers, jeeps, hordes of zombies and more. We guarantee to keep you on your toes and even laughing here and there until the very end. You will definitely feel accomplished when you finish this baby!

We proudly announce Choplifter HD will go on sale this January 10th for $15 on PSN. And keep an eye out for free DLC with lots more zombies very soon…

GILROY3 said:

Yea the PSN Plus discount would be nice but yet we pay for the plus I buy games like Back to the future at full price and 7 months later they offer it free to plus users, I think it is a waste unless they start givinf plus users better deals

I hate to say it but this is overpriced. Will wait on reviews and the inevitable price cut before considering purchase. Maybe I can be swayed by a demo but that’s going to have to be one heck’uv’ah demo to get me to shell out NBA Jam funds on ‘choplifter HD.

Choplifter is not something I would have thought people were clamoring for. However…The visuals are pretty outstanding for a game of this type and if the gameplay is smooth, it’s something I would love to play. My one concern is there is no demo. A demo, if enjoyable, would sway this from a “Wait for a cheap sale” to “Buy 5 minutes after starting the demo”.

Choplifter itself looks great, but I am SO over zombies. They are in any game that they could even remotely fit into, and it’s getting really really old. But with that, if there’s a demo, and this game is fun, I’ll buy it! Just please, enough with the zombies. :)

looks pretty cool! couple of questions:
1) does it have an emulated version of the original inside?
2) are the music and/or sound effect (aka explosion) assets 24-bit and/or losslessly-compressed? HD audio for explosions in surround sound is something only the PS3 can do, and I favor games that play to that platform strength :)
3) for $15, is there a platinum trophy?
4) any co-op support now or planned?

PS: another vote for getting a contract from Interplay to bring us Baldur’s Gate and Freespace engine games with 1080p native rendering, upgraded audio assets, and trophies on PS3!

Looks good, Yeah Meat boy! I have it for PC and it’s okay. I played it on my friend’s xbox 360 and I felt way better at it with a controller. It should definitely come to PS3. I mean, I could just go out and buy a wired 360 controller to play it on my PC. But then you know, that’s a lot of money just to enjoy one little game.

Wow, I remember Choplifter on my Apple //e back in the day :-)

Looks like a great ‘re-imagining’ of a classic! I agree with some others that $15 is just at the edge of my Impulse Buy zone, but I’m hoping (please, please!) that an eventual PS Vita port of the game will be included in that $15?

Hello everyone!

Love the comments and you will be happy to know that there is a demo version to play so you can check out the game first. And we received our first review from IGN and they categorized it as “great” giving it 8/10. The whole dev team is giddy and we can’t wait until tomorrow when people like yourself get to play our baby.

Have fun!

“thanks man. I owe u a beer.” looks awesome. Can’t wait to get it tomorrow. Why can’t Sony give us cool games like this for free for Plus rather than old tired retreads. And it can’t be the $15 price. Remember Stacking. Most games since then have been pretty lame. Anyway, looking forward to your game, Mr Fargo.

And I forgot to mention something exciting. We never get enough zombie killing around here so we are coming out with a DLC pack within 30 days called the Triple Z pack which is short for Zombie Zombie Zombie. It features the longest and most intense missions yet and has a special horde defense mini-game. And the best news is that we are going to give it away for FREE for a limited time.

Is this based on the sega one? If it is, I loved that game. But back in those days, I could only afford one console, and I had the nintendo. I was so jealous of this game, had to go to friends house just to play it. I loved it so much, you guys made me very happy for bringing it back. 82? Starting to feel like yesterday.

@3 & 4 Yeah, i didnt read anything, i just clicked the video and was interested, then left the $9.99 comment. But since reading it now, I think $15 is fair considering we are getting free dlc.

I instantly stop being interested in this game once I saw Meat Boy. The game isn’t on PSN and the developers for that game couldn’t care less about PSN apparently. I won’t buy this game at all with crappy cameos that shouldn’t be there to begin with. Nostalgia just had a baby with Epic Fail.

ReDai316 said:

We have to RESCUE Meat Boy? How about we put a few thousand bullets into him instead? Meat Boy isn’t on PSN so I’d rather blow him up and never see him in the game again. All this game does is ruin my nostalgia by shoehorning in cameos for games I have no clue about (and don’t belong in the game to begin with).

Is there any form of multiplayer available for this? It seems like a great laugh with a friend.

I wouldn’t go near it for $15. Ten or less. That’s priced right. $5-10.

You had me at Interplay. Welcome back. I hope this works out for you.

That said… One of the things the original really had going for it was that I could play it with my dad (well, ok, not 2-player) when I was 6. I just checked ESRB. I couldn’t play this one with my 10-year old even. Gore? Zombies? Cussing? Suggestive comments? Why do that to a great game that already stands on its own?

Probably won’t be touching this one.

candycabngfl said:

It was always fun to drive past the Interplay building years ago when it was in Sunnyvale/San Jose ;-) For $15.00 I will pass on this..I would be more interested if it was an emulated version of the original or at least had a mode with the original style graphics to it [ though I have sort of lost faith in anything emulated working correctly at this point ] $10.00 I will probably buy it. Enough with the zombies already guys… That selling point peaked several years ago imho. The magic of this game wasn’t so much what it looked like, it was how it played with tight controls and a very polished feel.

As a life long gamer now at the age of 40 imho the reason most games of that era were so great is they didn’t have the ability to have all the extra graphical crap we have now and they concentrated on game play because they had too. It seems like developers have either forgotten that or just get crazy trying to reinvent the wheel and don’t see that it just doesn’t appeal to those who loved the original versions of the game and can ruin the whole experience trying to be something it can never be.

I hope I’m wrong. I hope it can do justice to its name sake but its becoming harder to drink the Kool-Aid these days.

IKR! Anything with zombies is just lame at this point every developer has beaten that horse to death. Give us communists or aliens or minotaurs, something different anything but zombies. Cant anyone in the entertainment business even just try to be original anymore?
More game companies should charge less so they can sell more and thus make more money. PSN games rarely warrant the $15 tag as they just aren’t that good. Esp when some good PSN games have been below that price point.

Just 1 correction this is not based on an arcade game but Dan Gorlins creation in the 81/82 era & published by Broderbund (look it up). It was released on Commodore 64 & vic 20 and the atari 8bit computers and I think the Apple II series as well. the arcade version came much later and didnt see as huge a release as the original.

This is a day one purchase for me. Saw a video review, and it looks ridiculously fun. I have to agree with some others here. I am DONE with zombies. I could KILL the a-holes that started all of this zombie stuff.

candycabngfl said:

@ PirateHarlock

Didn’t know that, that really takes me back…. thanks for the info :-)

I had that version on the C64 back then along with Karateka. Broderbund, Lucas Arts, EA, Epyx, Infocom, Accolade, lots of great game companies turning out good stuff back then.
