Unit 13 Infiltrates PS Vita March 6th, Covert Mission Video Walkthrough

We are at CES this week showing off the latest, near-final build of Unit 13 and we have something special in store for the PlayStation.Blog community.

First, in case you missed the announcement from the PS Vita CES keynote yesterday afternoon, Unit 13 is scheduled for release on Tuesday, March 6th. We are quite excited to bring this new title to PS Vita. Thanks to the excellent dual analogs sticks on the Vita, Unit 13 represents the first full shooter experience on a portable gaming device. But don’t take our word for it: the press have been playing it and really like what they see. Check out the recent coverage from Kotaku, Destructoid, and IGN.

We also have, as another PlayStation.Blog exclusive, the first view of the North American box front!

Unit13

But what I am really here for is to provide an exclusive video walkthrough of a new level and game type in Unit 13. This is the first detailed video walkthrough of a Covert mission:

Unit 13 Infiltrates PS Vita March 6th, Covert Mission Video Walkthrough

For those not keeping up on Unit 13, there are four different mission types. Direct Action missions are larger, multiple objective missions that reward tactical play. Deadline missions are medium-sized missions where players have to race against the clock; they reward speed over tactics. Elite missions are small- to medium-sized missions with no health regen or check points. Elite missions reward taking as little damage as possible. Finally, the Covert missions are stealth missions where you need to get in and out without the enemy knowing you were there. It rewards players for remaining unseen and you get a bonus for leaving enemies alive. However, if you are discovered, you can still recover if you take out the alerted enemies fast enough. Each different game type has different scoring rules and each one makes the best use of the six different operatives and their equipment.

With 36 missions playable in single player or co-op, along with dynamic versions of those missions; plus nine HVT missions to unlock and share via near; six different operatives; 10 levels per operative that unlock new abilities, weapons and equipment; plus the daily challenge missions and leaderboards for all 36 single player and co-op missions, I predict that Unit 13 will keep you busy for a very long time.

  • i have 4 questions
    1. can we use wifi to see live leaderboards , current scores ,notifications , challenges or do we need to have 3g to use those functions?
    2. is there night vision goggles?
    3. why there is not online multiplayer on Unit 13 ?
    4. is there gonna be a demo on psn ?
im really digging the gameplay and graphics so i will keep an eye on the game , a demo would seal the deal

    • 1. Yes, you can use WiFi for all of the same functions as 3G. The advantage that 3G provides is that you can use it anywhere, anytime.

      2. No night vision goggles. Sneaking around in the dark is just not a part of the Unit 13 game play. Also, no back packs.:)

      3. There are a lot of games which offer competitive multiplayer, even on portables. The focus of Unit 13 was to compete with your friends in a different way that would be unique to the Vita.

Competing with your friends asynchronously via the 45 different single player leader boards (36 missions plus 9 HVTs) as well as 36 co-op leader boards and the constantly updating daily challenge provides a whole new way of competing with your friends that is better suited to a portable device.

      4. There will be a downloadable demo of Unit 13 available.

  • That game seems awesome but i would it like it more with a stroy line.. but still is great game

    • There is definitely a story in Unit 13. However, we did not want to focus on a linear narrative. Instead, we focused the story on the HVTs as well as the objectives to complete in the individual missions.

This was the best narrative to support the intended game play and we feel it works really well.

  • Pretty excited for March 6th.

Unit 13 for me on the couch, while girlfriend plays Mass Effect 3 on the big screen.

Should be a happy home, no doubt

  • 8 MB required??? I hope Golden Abyss doesn’t require this much since I’m getting the starter kit!

    • The starter kit comes with a 4GB memory card. 8MB is .0078125GB… Your 4GB memory card won’t even know it is there.

  • @4
I think you are confused. The starter kit comes with a 4GB memory card… which is plenty for 8MB…

Anyways, Unit 13 is looking awesome. Will definitely pick this one up. I expect some good online fun next time around though now they the team has some experience working with the vita ;)

  • Hi.I really like the game box art.Has the same style than The Expendable posters. Also,I hope this game does well, but I have my doubts.First, the graphics are ok,but not great.Second, the movement capture of the enemies is,and no offence intended, bad, they walk like robots.Third, that double kill with the knife, please, you can do something better there, thats plainly horrible, the second guy died, and you didnt even touched him.Fourth, please, dont make the same mistake that you did with Socom 4,where the most criticized part was the stealth. If you are gonna do it,do it well (and dont steal Metal Gear that much in the way, exclamation mark, really???).Fifth, for your next game, please, put more effort on the graphic;with all due respect, your games are the worst looking ones compared to the rest of Sony first party studios(MAG was ok because has sooo many things happening, but this and socom 4 has no excuses). After all of this you must be thinking that I hate you and your games, but thats is not true.I really love MAG, and loved the first Socom games, they were so innovative at their time, but now seem Zipper is a step back from the top of the industry.Well, this is all, good luck,I really hope this game sells a lot,and maybe, starts a new franchise.

  • Would consider buying if this has online multiplayer otherwise this game is a pass or bargain bin fodder.

  • Ooooh! Like that cover art.

    I’ll be getting Unit 13 day 1.

    Can’t wait!!!

  • Art cover looks wicked cool :)

  • VIDEO NOT WORKING ………… :)

  • Sigh..

you know you will make more sales and get better reception if we had either a socom franchise hd remake for psn/blu ray/vita or a true socom sequel, not that unsuccessful abortion you called socom 4.

It’s bad enough you stopped support for socom 4 and instead of commitment to the socom franchise and fans we get unit 13?

socom was sony’s number one online title at one time and sony/zipper have treated it like as if it like a red headed step child.

Maybe it is time for zipper to stop making shooters. Because if its not a true socom title, no one is really caring what other shooters you release.

  • man, this game looks so boring….zzzzzzzz.

  • Looks pretty damn good. Very nice job on the interface, looks very clean and touch friendly. Hopefully this does well, SOCOM 4 was not great but a good game, was sad to hear about the layoffs. Forty-Five should have been added into this game for Stealth Missions. Playing as her was my favorite parts of SOCOM 4.

BTW, is there any female characters to choose in Unit 13? =)

  • Nevermind video does work sorry

  • Love the box art and the graphics look good. Is coop adhoc only? Infrastructure coop makes this a day one buy if it has it.

  • What a joke, nothing more than a weak SOCOM ripoff, why would I buy anything by Zipper after the disaster of SOCOM:4? Where was the monthly DLC we were promised?, and also charging us for the demolition game mode, something that has been the defining mode of SOCOM since day one? thats just poor, thank you for destroying one of the best shooters out there, glhf.

  • Does the “Memory Required” icon on the cover means this game needs a memory card to save the game? can we save at least 1 game on the game card itself?

  • another epic game and another low memory req if only gtaiv was that small (not the savegame but the fullgame)

  • Looks great, very interested. I got Vita pre-ordered and can’t wait for Feb 22. I’ll be picking up a memory card for it too, although I wish Sony would put a 4GB card in every box as standard as I can see this putting a lot of people off! Also, announce a new Monster Hunter game for it to get it accelerating in Japan!

  • is sony planning to release ps vita tv spots ? i like the kevin butler campaign but i think the ps3 ” universe of entertainment ” ads were the best , it would be kool to have like 4 , 5 or more vita games on 1 ad

  • Man, there’s a lot of whiners in this comment thread. I haven’t been following this game too much before watching the video and I think it looks over-the-top awesome- all the way from the smooth gameplay, interface, and stealth shooting, to the textures on the walls and the dust in the air. I’m excited to see how smart the enemy AI is and how I’ll be pressured to decide between stealth or run & gun. I’m pumped.

  • Looks good and will probably buy. And to those above, yes this has online co-op thru wifi IIRC.

One question: how much will it cost at retail and how much on PSN??

  • “I predict that Unit 13 will keep you busy for a very long time”. Or until Zipper quits patching their unfinished games and they move on to their next game, right Seth? Zipper has good ideas, and I continue to play their games because of that, but for the love of Pete, release a finished game for once! SOCOM 4 needs the Play Now option brought back and/or move the Pro queues out of the no man’s land Custom server into the Standard and Classic servers so the few people who still play your games can play together, better.

  • Who is developing this? . . . Oh, Zipper. Thanks, but no thanks Zipper. You have two too many epic failures (i.e. M.A.G., Socom 4) for me to ever invest in anymore projects from you. I also speak for all of my psn and home friends.

  • dont you guys think theres too many games coming out on march 6? i think this should come out the week after ….

  • Looks great. Will get.

  • You socom fans are just so annoying with your “socom ripoff, socom 4 sucked we want a real socom game” etc etc as far as im concerned I hope you get nothing

  • @ 27

As far as I’m concerned we did get nothing..

Don’t get mad at us, zipper is the one releasing games unfinished with missing features.

  • SOCOM 4 sucked, Sony what makes you think I want a port of it on a hand held. Give us SOCOM 1 or 2 HD…

  • Is this what you guys spent all your time on instead of fixing Socom4 Move/Sharpshooter support, Tap-to-Talk functions, broken clan matching system, no party system, gun glitches, no sound knife glitch, double win rounds, and general complete disregard for the communities concerns? I’m not even talking about the socom vets, I’m talking about people who spent their hard earned money on an incomplete game that was never truly fixed.

I will never buy another Zipper product again and I suggest all of you who read this do the same.

  • Cool game

  • I like it, I hope other people like it. This isn’t a Socom game so please stop posting ‘socom’ related comments.

  • I would much rather have a new socom game, or at least socom 1 HD. Go to therealsocom.com/vote to vote yes for socom 1 HD!

  • TheRealSocom.com/vote

  • Looks good. I like the idea of dynamic missions and non-traditional mp.

  • important question:

does the game use an online code?

if it does, i’ll have to get a region 1 copy since im on the US PSN

  • Seriously looking forward to this game, Love stealth, and really think i’m going to love the vita, 32 days, 20 hours, 27 minutes and 55 seconds!!!!

  • Thanks for killing the SOCOM franchise Seth. The PS2 socom1 and 2 community asked for a few simple things and you managed to find a way to ruin it!!

P.S. I wont be buying any game that has you a part of it.

  • Make a proper SOCOM or go home. Nobody cares for these ‘Micky Mouse’ BS games.

  • Yeah. You’re right. I was thinking about GB instead of MB. Confused. I know the starter kit comes with a 4GB card.

  • wait wait…. no online multiplayer??? WTF?! FIRST modnation racers its not gonna have online… and now this? WTF…. i think im starting to thinking it twice to get a vita… i have mine pre – ordered but if there are no online games on it… im out. HELL EVEN MARIO KART on 3DS have Online SERIOUSLY!

  • I really hope the aiming/camera is not like the one in Socom 4.

  • Zipper
we hope from you to work on MAG 2 :)

and god lock for the new IP ( i will buy it , i am Zipper fan )

  • Sigh, When will sony get back to getting some good exclusive RPG’s? RPG’s are huge (Skyrim sold 10 million already). PS3 has way too many shooters and action games, Sony this gen dissappoints, no RPG’s. Remember games like dark cloud? PS2 was huge because it had so many great RPG’s, what happened to them all with the PS3?

  • add me on psn XD

  • thats a game im geting after i buy the ps vtia

  • big socom fan im gettin this

  • i’m really really enjoying Battlefield3 man that’s how a game should be.
lots of options and customizations for the guns and all

. Something SOCOM 4 failed to do among other things tsk tsk still waiting for a new one.

  • any compettive multiplayer

  • Socom 1 or 2 HD is what you should be thinking about. I’ll pass on Unit 13. The life and blood of this franchise was the hardcore fan base who could have easily brought plenty of people over by word of mouth just like Socom 1 and 2 did. Speechless…
