PS3 System Software Update (v4.11)

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by SVP, Marketing & PlayStation Network

Later tonight we’ll be releasing an optional system software update (v4.11) for PlayStation 3. This minor firmware improves certain aspects of system software, and is not mandatory to connect to PSN.

Again, this update is optional in the US and Canada, and can be downloaded by selecting System Update from the Setting column of the XMB.

Does this enable the viewing of Vita trophies? If not, when can we expect this feature on PS3?

does the software tell you what it is going to update? sometimes the software doesn’t actually tell you.

February 15th, 5:31 pm

I don’t have a problem with firmware updates, but you guys seriously need to give more details on what exactly these updates do. “improves certain aspects of system software” is extremely vague. You would think after all of the complaints about this over the years, you guys would have learned that no one likes the secrecy. Almost everything I update on my PC has a detailed changelog available, I don’t understand why Sony can’t do this as well.

My PS store has been freezing up (requiring hard reset) pretty often ever since firmware 4.0!

I’m hoping this update addresses the horrendous performance of the Wireless Headset since the last firmware update.

LOL @ post 5. Does he really think they’ll magically improve the graphics of PS1 games? I swear, some of the people who comment on these blogs are clueless.

I’d like to report a problem with the last firmware update. Whenever I try to exit the browser the menu never reappears (i.e. the system freezes). The browser closes, but the menu never displays.

Dear Sony Development Team,

This is Skater_Ricky Firmware Wish List
SONY can put these features into the ever so growing
Powerful “PS3” “if no for the future of the “PS4″.”

►? (Party System) Cross Game Voice Chat (“RAM Limitation” so it wont happen sad face:( )
►? Voice Messaging (30 second – 60 second clip)
►? Be able to hit the PS button to Answer a Message that a Friend has Sent ONLY WHILE in idel on the XMB with no App or Game Running (God knows how slow it is going into the XMB and getting out of the XMB when finishing up a message)
►? Faster IN-GAME XMB.. take out useless options that can’t be used in-game or Better Yet “REVAMP the whole In-game XMB” or just make a better In-game menu all together and deal without the XMB for in-game Menu.
(Part 1)

Hey, I know these updates aren’t supposed to reveal security issues (thus the vagueness) but it would be nice to inform us in case some features get improved. It’s like getting all these issues in Skyrim and the update change logs only inform that “something in the game has been fixed”. With the community pointing out every single error, getting a message like this would be very frustrating.

hey playstation ( Jeff , Eric , Sid , Rey and all others that post on this blog ) how about you guys let us make a list of games we want and let us know when they become available on psn ? i mean send notifications through psn letting us know the games we want are available or is it too much asking ? oh Eric why ps3 users cant see vita players online ? i can see all my ps3 friends online on my vita but they cant see me online why is that?

gekko1986 said:

February 15th, 6:18 pm

Why can’t I turn off trophy notifications? I don’t care anything about trophies and I don’t want to hear or see that annoying message while I’m playing. Seems like it would be pretty simple to do.

#22 @crazy_kracker1 Troll haha!! at least I have ideas.. unlike you. I actually have Ideas.. I keep my ideas saved to my PC for Fast Copy and Paste rather then working on a hour Post I’ve had ideas days and Months even years in advanced ready to be heard and read.

I believe you owe me a few apologies. Due to my ideas will be heard and wanted just as many requested and want to see improved. Some Ideas I’ve made will not be applied due to hardware limitations on the PS3 but will need to be considered in the future of PlayStation Consoles.

So who’s the Troll now? Clearly not me.. Anyone on the BLOG without a Avatar is more less Trolls and or new to the PlayStation family.

if it was a security update, do you really think it would be a purely optional update that wouldn’t interfere with connecting with PSN if you didn’t update?

station3fever said:

February 15th, 6:19 pm

Optional, maybe for 1 it 2 weeks then it becomes mandatory. Just looking at history

poodude said:

Cool, hopefully this fixes the issue with PS1/Minis not installing or leaving their install packets on the XMB.

Vinland_Krauser said:

February 15th, 6:20 pm

Or better yet, having some DLC on the store that costs 15~20 dollars that says “this mystery pack adds more content to your game, good luck finding it out!”. Imagine the expectation to get some post-game content, only to receive a pair of skins.

Vinland_Krauser said:

Maybe it could be to prevent data loss / corruption and some people wouldn’t be interested in downloading it. Well, the world is big enough to have people that think like this, everything is possible.

iTofuMan said:

Hopefully it will be able to download dlc from the ps3 to Vita. For some reason my copy of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom cant tranfer, or even get the dlc for it. yet in game it shows that there is, but unable to download it/buy it.

Dear Sir:

Perhaps I’m the only one in the vast world of PlayStation but, I guess I’ll never know concerning this particular matter. We’ll see.

Mr. Lempell, we totally digg how quickly you work. You don’t make us wait for a dang thing. When you post something on the blog or wherever, its pretty much already up and ready to go.

My complaint however is how the PLAYSTATION STORE has changed. To be honest, I HATE IT! It seems to have gotten much more difficult to find things. When the Store was updated probably even 8p.m PST, I found that all my friends were playing Mass Effect 3’s demo and it wasn’t anywhere to be found. Normally, this is understandable because it just hasn’t been uploaded yet. It feels like now I have to actually “find the shovel and digg” when it used to just be right there for me. I’d like updates on the PlayStation Store to go back to how they used to be. This week was the work experience I’ve EVER had on the PlayStation Store. That means you’ve done stellar 99.9% of the time. So good for you. I just don’t like it.

Dear Playstation plz give us more info about what vita compatible titles will be able to play on ps3 with that on the cloud save feature or tell me if i download a ps vita game that is supported to work on ps3 and vita will i be able to play that on my ps3 if i dont own a vita

ReptileHand said:

So, if it’s so Mandatory, then What is in the update? Care to tell us? Because you know, once will know, we will already have it installed in the system. I checked online, people say it’s live! … but not what’s in it. Thanks for not telling us what’s in the update. And yeah, you guys keeps changing the store, I’m so confused. Also the PS+ *discounted items* section is littered with SNK PLAYMORE COPORATION’s games. I liked it when they were SEPARATE from the discounts section, you’ve made me kind of un-happy with this. I don’t see why they can’t get their own bubble… oh wait they do!

jsnyder82 said:

I have never heard a compelling reason for Cross Game Chat. If you want to talk to people playing other games than the one you’re playing, do a freakin’ conference call.

Voice Message in mail? PASS. Absolutely do not want.

Would love to Defragment my harddrive. Would LOVE that. Cannot believe it’s not in there already.

They’ll never allow custom avatars because that’s how people will put pictures of their junk on their profiles, and PS3 online profiles are visible to minors and other folks that know more appropriate places for junk-looking if they’re in the mood.

Browser update for the PS3? USE A REAL COMPUTER. The PS3 software would be much better off and slimmer if this wasn’t in there at all.

A PS Blog feed would be much better than that garbage What’s New section that reiterates the games I’ve recently played and some promotional trash I’ll never touch.

Hooligantuan said:

Also, it’s a ridiculous, awful shame that Sony shut down software-based PS2 compatibility.

I optimistically want to think it’s not because of a transparent cash-grab on re-releasing old material through digital download, but that is *really* stretching my optimism quite a bit.

It’s not a business practice I’m on board for when the PS4 comes around and it’s part of the reason I’ve sworn off Nintendo. Bethesda burned me on New Vegas and its PS3 instability, which pushed me into dropping a large chunk of change on a new video card on my PC. I’m getting quite fond of this PC gaming business.

FYI, Sony. Make your money the right way. Ask a fair price when you tap your oldies.

I’m just one dude with one foot out the door. Probably just one dude, anyway. Probably.

@ #5 All Playstation One games look horrible. The PS1 came out in 1995. What do you expect the games to look like? They look bad on the PS1 system and they’re going to look bad on the PS3. No way Sony is going to waste time trying to make PS1 games look better on the PS3 by releasing a firmware update. That’s not even their problem to resolve. It’s the developers of the PS1 games. And they are not going to waste time, money, and resources on games that were released over a decade ago. Get a clue!
