PlayStation Network Scheduled Maintenance Tomorrow

Update
The maintenance is now completed.

PlayStation Nation!

My name is Matthew Harper, and I’m part of the recently-formed PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Management team. Our mission is to keep you better informed about everything that is going on in the wide world of the PlayStation Network, to make your voice heard within the company, and to ensure that you, the gamer, are at the heart of every development across PSN. Together, we will help guide the future of this platform.

I’m here today to let you know that we will be performing routine scheduled maintenance on the network on Monday, April 16th, starting at approximately 6:00 am PDT / 9:00 am EDT. This maintenance will last roughly 13 hours, concluding around 7:00pm PDT / 10:00 pm EDT. During much of this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online. PSN enabled websites will not be able to service users, including this one.

We will continue to provide as much information as we can regarding any future maintenance we need to schedule.

Keep your eyes on the PlayStation Twitter feed for a notice when PSN is fully back online. We look forward to gaming with you all when the maintenance is finished on Monday night.

  • Hello Matthew,

Hopefully you or somebody from the PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Management Team will be reading this. First I’d like to start by saying welcome to your audience, I hope you can cope with the critisism to come in your future. I don’t envy your job as I know your kinda as good/useless as a CS Rep, if Sony doesn’t allow you to divulge or doesn’t provide you with the info to do your job right, but that doesn’t give you a free pass. I’d at least hope you would use your skills to get some kind of info on the questions we ask from your superiors and or convince them of the importance of the info.

Now when it comes to the maintinance tomorrow, I’m personally not bothered by it, and while we the customers are not entitled to an explination as to why your free service is going down for maintenance, it would be nice to be in on what it does. Like some have said you don’t need to say “This maintance is fixing XXX loopholes or bugs in our system” but if it improves a certain games performance, helps those that are having issues getting onto the PS Store or even just staying online, than I think those are valid explinations that should be able to be talked about.

  • disambiguated: If you think you can do better by all means go work for Sony.

  • TheSoi2 : Don’t you people read and pay attention!?! Sony already said 12321321312 times why they can’t have party chat. Besides we already have a chatroom with video, mic, and keyboard

  • I’m so hoping for a Vita Update :S

  • For example their are many times where a PS3 System Software Update might come out and all it will say is something along the lines of “Improves Certain Software Stablilty” but what does that mean? Is it a certain game?, the OS?, etc… When we get that it’s like getting a vaccine shot from a doctor and when you ask “What was it you gave me and what does it do?” and the doctor responds vaguely “It improves your resistance to germs” and excuse the extreme nature of my example but I think it is somewhat valid. I don’t think you or anybody likes to be kept in the dark and while this isn’t our lives on the line, we would still like to be aware of the changes that are occuring to the systems we paid for, as well as the network which we love using.

  • I fully understand on doing your job, and things need to be done. But 13 hours? and Not giving us any clue on why? .. Sorry If i sound rude, but … around (not sure) this time is when the PSN was down for a couple months last year .. Is this going to be a yearly thing? Should I (as a customer since PS1) be aware of something? I am just a gamer who dose not want to be left in the dark

  • should I hack psn tomorrow?

  • If you can indeed keep us updated more often than the previous team then you will earn my respect and gratitude.
If you and your team have any say in such matters, please urge Sony to release new updates for the Vita that give us the functionality it is capable of and that we deserve.
    Thank you. :)

  • Yet another needless maintenance, and yet another “community manager” thinking he’ll make a difference. I wonder how long it’ll take for him to realize it’s a fruitless effort and quit, I’ll be be generous and say… 5 months. I’ll buy you a Atelier Totori avatar if I turn out to be wrong.

Also, it was around this time last year that PSN.. or SEN, or whatever they want to call themselves these days, went down for a month+, I’m pretty sure people can survive 12 hours.

  • Hmm might release my 4.11CFW/4.11-JB tomorrow for ps3

  • + enjionPS
That is what I was saying too… Its a little odd on the time frame…

  • Can you please add party chat on to the ps3… I love it on the vita but imagine it on the ps3. I was so happy when I heard party chat was going to be on the vita… I thought it would happen for the ps3 too!! Please add party chat

  • What kind of IT staff need 13 hours to do maintenance on a server farm? The lazy kind that does not do it continually in rotation! Sony executives should print out a big fat poster for all their datacenter with the word “Redundancy!” to remind the gerbils to keep the wheels rolling!

  • Why the f***** do people get angry over maintnence? If its to make the PSN more stable, why wouldn’t you give sony all the time they need?

  • @KGH
I dont think angry is the proper word, its more annoyed and still a little un sure from the last time.. 13 hours could turn to 13 days, or 3 months. Angry no.. Annoyed by no answers, yes

  • VITA TIME!

  • I can say right now that having PSN down for the entire day for the United States customer base and the evening and nights for everyone else is kind of a rip off, a lot of people work or SLEEP at night and play during the day and I see where you say that the maintenance will be in the late night for everyone pretty much on the other side of the world then I feel they are obviously getting the better part of this deal because they go to bed and wake up and “Oh what do you mean PSN was down, oh must have slept right through it, HAHAHA.”

  • Oh and another thing, the last maintenance you guys did like this was at almost the same times which means yet again you screwed the US base, why not alternate time zones so that we in the States are not the only ones getting screwed out of an entire day!!

  • As for all the people complaining about the timing of this update well what can I say, personally I don’t think SCEA has anything to do with it. To me it’s very confusing who is in charge of the PSN and who has the say in it all, but I think it is either somebody at SCEE or SCEJ, that is why North America always has times where it happens in the middle of the day. Mr. Harper perhaps you could clarify this for me? Which branch does decide when Maintence occurs? Is it SCEA,SCEE, or SCEJ? This answer might help people understand since the PSN/SEN is a Global Network. While the servers that got hacked last April were located in California as I understand, I find it hard to believe that those servers ran the whole of the PSN at that time and were probably just for North America while Europe and Japan have their own local servers for their countries.

    To be continued…

  • Big question. Why can’t we play all the PSP games or download PS1 games to the Vita? Hackers have already done it. In fact, they’ve got remote play working on EVERY PS3 game. I understand there are security issues, but these are features that will sell consoles. Big time. PSP games didn’t sell poorly just because of piracy. They sold poorly because there were so few good ones. Can we not make that same mistake with the Vita? I swear, you guys are just throwing money into a burn pile, laughing your heads off. Does anyone who works at PlayStation actually play these things…or even listen to the community? You keep saying you are, but I have yet to see it. You can’t please everyone, which I understand. Pleasing just a few people would be great though. I love my PS3 and Vita, but I feel like Sony isn’t treating any of the main concerns seriously.

  • Starting to think these PSN replies are automated :-/

  • we should get 2 free games at any of our chose since u guys keep doing this

  • While your reading (hopefully) you can pass on these simple requests to the firmware team.

    – Add Playlists to the Video categorie
    – Add Shuffle to both the Pictures & Video categories
    – Replace the current Browser with Firefox (You know it’s a bad browser when it can’t even sign into your own webpages)
    – Add more Music Visualizations (That Earth One is really Nice, more space ones would be nice)
    – Add a Search Function to the Download List
    – When in Video Chat allow the video screens to fill up your whole screen
    – Allow comments to be longer in the PSN ID
    – Allow comments to be longer on this Blog

  • Thank god I have school that day! Well anyways, I’m not sure if you denied it yet, but are we EVER going to be able to have parties where we can talk instead of typing things? If you ever do this, I will put a tattoo on my chest saying PSN FOREVER. Thanks, you guys have the best network out there!! :)

  • – Require every game have a Demo on PSN (in fact some do but never come out an good example of this is Sideway, when I bought it, it had a demo & unlock key, but the demo was never put on PSN serperately)

    – Require developers included this info in the description of all games on PSN (i.e. Resolution: 720p, 1080p, Audio Support: Stereo 5.1, 7.1, # of Players 1-4 ,Voice Chat Support, Online Play Support, Custom Soundtrack Support etc) Because recently I thought the game Skydrift didn’t support voice chat on the PS3, while the XBOX 360 version did, only to find out it did & that I just never knew about it, since I couldn’t hear my friends over the music of the game.

P.S. Please find out why the Original Twisted Metal on PS1 hasn’t been brought to the PSN? I loved that game when I was little.

Anyways Goodluck and Thanks in Advance

  • Come on people, we all think it’s lame but that’s life. It’s part of there job to do maintenance, that’s what makes PSN what it is. It would be nice to know why but as Americans we should all be used to the wool being pulled over our eyes.

PSN please try and let your consumers know why your down, it makes them less hostil. As for me I will support Sony till the day I die and my children will do the same. Thank you for all the kick assedness you have unleashed already. We look forward to the future.

O and tell Kevin Butler I said what’s up.

    Peace out.

  • Welcome back to the late 90s – early 00s. I’ll be having friends over to play like gamers should. With actual PEOPLE sitting next to me, drinking and having fun beating the crap out of each other on Mortal Kombat. Online gaming, to me, is nothing but a nuisance anyway. I miss the days of split-screen and single console co-op. To all the people saying the updates never do anything for them; how about it upgrades your consoles security? You wanna whine and moan about this? Trade in your ps3, buy an XBOX360 and PAY for your online so you can actually have a reason to whine. Be happy that it’s FREE TO PLAY ONLINE. You have NO reason to complain.
All of you whiners who can’t find a way to play with friends aren’t “hardcore” gamers. You’re casual at best.
Get off PSN and join XBL. We don’t want you here anyway.

  • Around the world in 13 hours.. sound very fun in deed.. It may sound like a very long time but when your doing it time really flys by and you have to get alot of important stuff done its almost like a vgames.

  • Matthew Harper, Who do you think your fooling?

Wait don’t answer that. I’ll tell you who. The answer is NO ONE!

its clear the only reason you are here at all is so Eric Lempel can do less than nothing he’s been doing. “Improving communication with consumers”, really? no Mathew it doesn’t add up. Truth is you posted it 10 minutes before leaving and made 3 measely and very vacuous replies the night before the maintenance. On top of this its still a full day long maintenance, far too long for what’s supposed to be an “always on” service. On top of that theres no real answers as to whats being improved. But going by all the unplanned and unannounced “maintenance” days nothing will improve. The whole network will continue to stutter sloppily along like a drunk staggering down the center of the street. Nothing has changed at all except the name behind the same tired old lies. That itself makes no difference. This company is flying headlong towards a cliff at full speed. If you want to get behind the wheel Matthew hit the brakes and change course, and for gods sake take your lead foot off the gas.

  • I don’t mind the downtime, it gives me time to go out and do other things than sit on my ass all day. but I do have one concern and that is why we don’t get the option to change our PSN names. We already don’t get cross game chat or being able to play music while playing games, so why not let us change our psn names?? Even if it’s a $5 charge, I don’ t mind, I just want to change my name without losing my ps+ and all my purchased games, I still have funds in my wallet too.

  • So sad that Sony will soon be laying off another 10,000 workers to stop the bleeding because of the boneheaded decisions by the execs up top. Granted, the layoffs are more about their lagging TV division than the gaming division, but just further proof the management doesn’t know what the heck they are doing. Please listen to your customers before it is too late. Some customers have some unrealistic requests, but there are some good ideas here. Yet, they still seem to get brushed off or put on a very low priority. We want to give you money but it is hard when you keep releasing features few people asked for and the real exciting stuff seems to be stuck in the “QA” stage forever. You have really lost touch in what your customers truly want.

  • @Calieb88 – of course Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, etc. are under attack 24/7/365. Miscreants are trying to crack into their systems, disrupt them with DDoS attacks, and so forth.

Being under constant assault strengthens the argument for redundancy, scalability, resilience, and high availability. The fact is that the PSN is poorly designed and poorly operated – otherwise, Sony would never have to take the whole thing down at one time, ever, for any resason.

  • @IPumpMyGun – I would never work for Sony, as they’re a huge, sclerotic, bureaucracy which obviously does not value talent nor innovation. It’s absurd in the year 2012 for a major system like the PSN to have to be shut down completely for any reason whatsoever; I have no interest in working for the people who allowed that sorry state of affairs to come about in the first place.

  • i hope its to update everything including “Trophies” some of the games ive played, doesn’t show up bc its not in real time…….Warlockozzy

  • I’d just like to point out that I might have one of the most badass PSN usernames. Oh and it would be cool to see a youtube app because YouTubeXL sucks the video quality is damn terrible. I ts also ironic that I’m posting this comment from my 3DS (the Vita was too much for me right now, seeing how I dont have a job)

  • look at all the whiny children, dear God. It’s a good thing none of you play on a pc service regularly.
Then again I see enough whiners their also and they get 2 days in advance warning.

  • disambiguated

Troll harder, please son. I don’t think they see the crying face from mars yet.

  • Biggest thing i want to know is about remote play for ps vita… my main reason to buying one was for the remote play to play my ps3 games on my ps vita while i was away from my console.. when is playstation fixing their mistake of the remote play that was promoted for killzone 3 or any of the other games the was “supposedly” be able to work with remote play?
also on the playstation website they advertise ps vita apps such as skype the works with wi-fi but yet you can not download it anywhere? when will that be fixed?

  • yo on the real talk ….stop complainig about how sony won’t tell you why its shutting down the servers good gravy these new age gamers whine so much just stop it already…. you dont need to know everything and your negative comments are giving real gamers a bad rep ….and for those that are complaining about the vita u shouldnt have bought it early ..so “TS” now everyone have a coke and a smile and have nice day …

  • I have a question and it’s not about the PSN I’m fine with the maintenance, even though I don’t quite understand..My question is, if sony really cared about their people, why were they trying so hard to get sopa to pass? I have always looked up games on youtube to find out if I want to buy it or not which I’m pretty sure that’s what a lot of gamers do now a days…and If they really care about their gamers, why can I buy a bran new game at wal-mart for cheaper then I can on the PSN store? I know that they need to make a profit but, I think sony is taking it way to far, all they care about is money they don’t care about us, if they did I don’t think they would be here now…so don’t lie and say they care about us when they only care about money and that’s all they care about..all they have ever done to help us is make it to were we have to buy the same game over and over again…..I just want the truth, if they cared they wouldn’t be hiding secrets…..do you have in answer? probably not…..if you guys said that all you cared about money I would say ok, at least your honest about it….sorry matthew to put this on you, but when did a company ever cared about anybody?

  • since psn is going to be down all day why dont you fix ufc where we can actally use dlc online

  • personly i think sony does this because theyy are afraid of hackers they dont care in mw2 or mordern warfare or waw but as soon as it threatens all of psn they give us free games so they think they are probably gonna get hacked again and are just doing this out of fear
