Dragon’s Crown Update: Atlus Assumes Publishing Duties for PS Vita, PS3

Denizens of the Blog of PlayStation,

You know how you’re really excited for something and then something happens and you get even more excited? Like that time you found out they were making a movie for The Hobbit and you were excited…but kinda bummed that Peter Jackson wouldn’t be directing it. But guess what happened: Peter Jackson announced that he *would* in fact direct it, and you got a heck of a lot more excited. Right?

Remember Dragon’s Crown, the next project from Vanillaware announced at last E3, a multiplayer action RPG with beautiful hand-drawn visuals slated to come to PS3 and PS Vita?

Dragon's Crown for PS3 and PS Vita

BREAKING NEWS: Atlus is taking over publishing duties in Japan and North America! What’s more, key (and very talented) members of the Atlus internal development team will be involved with the project as producer(s). You know, some of the people who’ve worked on games in the critically acclaimed Persona series. Yeah, we know: we’re stoked, too!

What does this mean for the game? For one, it means that it’s going to be better than ever. It will, however, come a bit later than originally expected, as it’s now slated for release in 2013.

When we took over the reins, we realized that a lot of the information made available to the public was ambitious and unfounded conjecture. The release timing, the pricing, and many of the features detailed for fans and members of the press were simply unknowable at the time they were disseminated (and frankly we were quite shocked to find out that many of the details were made public unbeknownst to even the developers).

Dragon's Crown for PS3 and PS Vita

It’s still way too early in development to be talking about specifics, but we can say that the game simply cannot retail for $29.99. We don’t know where that price point came from, but it is a logistical impossibility. We’re all gamers and we all wished it could be so, but it would have essentially destroyed any chance for profitability.

There’ll be plenty more news on the game in the coming months, and many questions that you’ll want answered. We promise that we’ll do our very best to answer them!

SUMMARY: Dragon’s Crown is still coming to PS3 and PS Vita, Atlus is bringing it (and helping to produce it), and it’ll hit North America in 2013.

  • I’m so thrilled! Can’t wait to buy it next year.

  • PRAISE ATLUS!!! Thanks for saving it from the fog of uncertainty, can’t wait for it now! And don’t worry about the price point, we know we’ll be paying for quality. : )

  • That’s great. We need more japanese games over here localized. But I’ll get excited when they actually announce the Persona 4 Golden localization.

  • This very good to hear. I was starting worry that this game got cancelled. Glad, you guys picked it up. So how soon can we get to see Dragon’s Crown again? E3 2012?

    • Dragun619,

There are no plans in place for when the game will next be shown, but we’ll certainly have a lot more to share in the coming months!

  • This is good. I trust Atlus, they brought us Demon’s Souls.

  • Where’s Grand Knights History?

  • Thank god for this.Sucks its not until 2013 though.

  • ATLUS, Yes!!! Now I am confident in this product, though I have some questions:
    1-Is it 4 players Co-op!?
2-How many classes are there !? (Mage is a MUST!)
3-If there is loot and money, do other players get to collect it or divided !?
4-Physical or Digital release !? (Physical please)
5-Touch controls are optional or mandatory !?

Thank you Aram, I have a faith in you :].

    • 1) The current plan is for support of 1-4 players, as indicated by the existing Japanese website. As we caution in the OP however, some details are subject to change given how early in development the title is.
      2) This is the kind of question we’ll have more details for in the near future!
      3) See previous answer (and please know that we’re not dodging the question; it’s just too early to have a conclusive answer for you!)
      4) Current plans include both.
      5) I have to refer you to my second answer again.

As soon as we have more info for you, we’ll be back on the blog with a post to answer more of your questions. Thank you for having faith in us!

  • hurry 2013. amazing new gameplay

  • Personally I was really looking forward to The Hobbit being directed by Guillermo Del Toro. But Peter Jackson is fine too. :p

This is by far my most anticipated game when it was announced last year. Had a pre-order from it until the retailer I had it pre-ordered with decided to cancel my pre-order because apparently of what you’re talking about in your blog post. But that’s fine. I’m really looking forward to it.

Also, I know it’s a bit early to ask, but please let it have a dual-language option. I have confidence you can in this case since you published the outstanding Odin Sphere which also had that option.

As far as price, charge what you want, I will buy it at a high price. :D

    • “Also, I know it’s a bit early to ask, but please let it have a dual-language option. I have confidence you can in this case since you published the outstanding Odin Sphere which also had that option.”

As we’ve said previously, it’s something we ALWAYS explore because we know our fans want it. Sometimes factors prevent the inclusion of the original Japanese audio track, but if it’s possible and feasible, we’ll do our best!

  • So it can’t retail for 29.99$, what does that mean for the VITA version? Is it going to be the uber high price of 49.99$, that only Uncharted has gone for so far? I mean, I want this game no matter what and will get it on day one but I’m wondering when we’ll know about the price point, and if we’ll get one version for free (via download) if we get the other.

    • As you’ll see on the new pre-order pages that appear, the Vita release currently carries a suggested retail price of $39.99. The BOGO scenario you mention, however, is highly unlikely.

  • What about us European fans?i wanted to buy this at retail since i don’t have a credit card

  • Ok, you want a shot here you go…

I can’t think of anything bad here except for the extra year wait. That bodes very ill for all of us waiting Grand Knights History, the other Vanillaware game we are waiting on, as Xseed made it clear that the localization of GKH was on hold because of the team’s work on Dragon’s Crown. I hope we see that game at all here in the west.

Back to the topic at hand, honestly I always thought the 29.99 price point sounded too good to be true. That being said, Dragon’s Crown is still my most wanted Vita game and I would have no problem paying the standard 39.99/35.99 for the retail and digital versions. I also firmly believe the PS3 version is worth any price you guys want to slap on it. Sony rolled out a solid pricing structure for PS3/Vita game with MLB the Show 2012. I think that pricing strategy would be perfect for Dragon’s Crown.

So thanks Atlus for being gaming’s White Knight once again. I’ll be there day one.

Oh, cool pre-order bonuses and dual language track obligatory demands of course.

  • Glad it’s Atlus USA and not Aksys… I mean, they’re cool and all but Atlus has experience with Vanillaware.

  • Excellent news I’m even more inclined to buy it, with input from both teams this games would be awesome!

  • This is fantastic news, should mean a better localization, and another chance to support Atlus. I still have mine pre-ordered from maybe half a year ago. Knowing Atlus I’m sure this will also mean a free bonus. I will be eagerly anticipating further details on the product.

  • I’m just happy that it’s still coming out, period. Such a shame that its pushed back to 2013, *sigh*. C’est la vie.

  • Hope its good, sounds great!!

  • I’m hoping very much that both the Vita and PS3 versions get digital releases. I could care less about price point, I’ll buy them day one if they get released on the PSN. Can’t get enough digital imo or definitely can’t get enough AtlusUSA. You guys/gals hold publishing rights to some really great IPs be it PS3 or PS2 (which I pray you keep giving us as Classics) Keep em coming, and we will keep buying!!

  • Glad to hear something about this game. I was starting to think it would never be released. 2013 is pretty vague though. Here’s hoping it isn’t more than 12 months away.

When can we get some actual information about this thing? The website is/was so barebones. It’s hard to be excited when there isn’t much/any information to get amped about.

    • PuppetShoJustice,

There’s no set date for the next release of info and/or assets, but we promise we’ll be back here to share them with you whenever something new is available!

  • ATLUS huh, guess we can rule out multiple language support. Putting this one on the import list.

  • Atlus to the rescue! I’ll gladly pay $299.99 for this masterpiece.

  • Hmm, can’t wait to see if this will be a Remote Play title :D

  • Hell yeah. This is great. Since price is mentioned, I would have absolutely no problem with the title being the full standard price, here. Very far away, but it should be seriously considered. Atlus U.S.A. has consistently been more than generous by reducing prices of many games (notably Personas 2 & 3 for PSP, recently, which you need to have). This would be quite fair.

  • Day 1 buy.

  • VITA version here I goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! :D

  • I’ll gladly buy one copy for my ps3 and another for my vita. Now can you please take more of my money and announce persona 4 golden for the west?

  • Well its Atlus so you know it will be good!

It would be great though if this game had Cross-platform it seems like its a feature most games wont take advantage of and seems perfect if Atlus got on that. Also like others have said it would be nice if it does have Cross-platform that it comes bundled with each other, but i guess it seems like Unlikely. a shame if you ask me. i think it would bring in more sales not only for the game, but the Vita/ps3 system as well if more companies took advantage of that.

  • Really sad to hear it won’t come out until 2013 but still very happy to hear some news either way. Since I first saw footage of this game I’ve been eagerly anticipating it and I think I am part of a pretty big group. When the Vita was announced, it seemed there would be such a steady stream of great games coming but since launch it’s been really, really slow. All the games I was excited about are ways off, such as Dragons Crown, Sound Shapes, Gravity Rush (thought we’d have it sooner than July..), Lair and so on.

I am glad that Dragon’s Crown is still coming but disappointed it’s been delayed until 2013.

  • since its from atlus i will buy it. atlus always puts most time and effort into games and they always turn out well.

  • @12 I agree on the pricing structure example. Pull a MLB12like combo pack with Dragon’s Crown and you can have my monies.

  • You guyes surprised me, God Of War:Ascention announcement didn’t because of the leak from Amazon. Will you be demoing it E3?

  • By the way, out of curiosity… what are “talented producers” overseas going to do to make this game better? They are not developing the game. They schedule and handle logistics. I thought that was an odd thing to say. Can’t for the life of me think of a more overrated and over-paid job than non-creative producers.

Naughty Dog has it right, they don’t even have producers.

  • I agree with 12’s pricing structure as well as support the dual language track along with pre-order bonuses :)

  • I can’t help but feel disappointed with the wait but on the other hand I’m glad it was saved either way rather than canned. Now that Atlus picked it up, is this game going to see a release elsewhere outside of the Playstation brand?

  • Also, thank you for the good news that this title is still in active development. It’s nice to read something uplifting after the travesty of the digital-only distribution of the One Piece game.

Hope this turns out as good as it looks. It’ll Day One it for sure. But please consider keeping the JP language track as an option. You have plenty of time in your development cycle to make that happen. And it isn’t an unreasonable request.

    Don’t let us down, Atlus.

  • Well hey, at least we’ve got something concrete now. Go ATLUS! You’re one of the best publishing groups out there.

Now where is Grand Knights History, Sony? :/ Another Vanillaware classic that you guys are sitting on, nowhere to be seen…

  • Mr. jabbari, I think a HD remastered PS3 collection disc of Odin’s Sphere and Muramasa is in order, wouldn’t you agree?

  • Hi, Aram, I always look forward to your posts because you’re so funny. Although not so far in this one, :-)

I really appreciate that you are manning up and just putting the truth out there. And you’re being rewarded by our responses and 5 bars. We can take some bad news if it’s the truth and you tell us early. Wish fullish disclosure was more prevalent, ’nuff said.

No worries, Aram. Looking forward to more posts from you as the development progresses.

    • They can’t all be winners :)

Thank you for the kind words. We’ll hopefully have a new post with more details soon!

  • About time! Thanks Atlus!

  • I don’t even know what this game is, but I love everything that Atlus is involved in. I’ll definitely be buying this when it does drop. I am also very impressed with the blatant honesty from Aram. Why in the heck doesn’t Sony give us information with those kind of details?

  • Yippee!! When can I pre-order it? This is one of the title I was psyched for before I even bought my Vita. :)

  • im guessing it be like MLB the show 2012. you buy both you get 20bucks off?

  • As long we get a retail for the PS3 version i will buy.

Depending if i have a vita by then i will also buy a copies of the Vita version.

  • All these 2012 delays are ANNOYING!! I was really looking forward to this.

  • Have you guys said anything to SNK bout fixing KOF? Or does SNK and Atlus not care anymore cause yah got ur money?

  • I somehow knew you guys would end up getting your hands on this and I am happy for it. I wish you could have handled Grand Knights History as well. Either way, totally buying both versions of this I hope crossplay is a feature, oh and please don’t disable my custom soundtracks. :D

  • I THINK you’d sell more copies if you had a lower price, and would profit equally, and would gain fans, and win.

  • wow this really caught me by surprise :0

  • I’ll buy at high price if it’s physical retail.
