April 2012 PSN Top Sellers: I Am Alive Survives The Competition

April was a close race for the top spot: PSN exclusive Journey continued to see major play, with fighting game par excellence SkullGirls and emotionally exhausting survival epic The Walking Dead Episode 1 following close behind. But it was Ubisoft’s harrowing tale of one man’s survival amidst catastrophe that claimed the top spot — I Am Alive was this month’s most-downloaded PSN game.

On PS Vita, Escape Plan entered its third month of leadership on the PS Vita PlayStation Store. In Add-Ons, Call of Duty content (both new and old) stormed in, while MLB 12: The Show content shared some of the top honors.

Get the download on all of April’s top sellers below. Think you can predict what next month’s top sellers will be? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  • Great to see Journey, House of the Dead 4, and inFamous Festival of Blood still up there and it’s always a pleasure to see the PSone top 5 dominated by true classics. Maybe the top 5’s could be expanded to top 10’s so we can see a bit more variety beyond the top 5.

  • 4am or I Am Alive?

    • That’s a tough one. If you have Move and are into digital music creation or appreciation in the slightest, 4am no question.

  • Wait.

Do my eyes deceive me? Has Real Steel finally fallen off this list!?

    FINALLY!

  • XxElBigMex913xX

Just Gotta Love Grand Theft Auto IV & Episodes from Liberty City
Also This Game Beats Saints Row Games.
Since Saints Row Is Way Too Unrealistic & Stupid At The Same Time.

  • “Since Saints Row Is Way Too Unrealistic & Stupid At The Same Time.”

    not sure if serious?

  • Glad to see customers and gamers went for I Am Alive despite a couple of terrible reviews (in both senses). It’s about time consumers wise up to poor gaming press stances. This game is one of the most innovative things to come in the 3rd person adventure/action genre in quite a while, and should be celebrated as such. It’s sickening how every other press guy loves to complain about games being all about teenage power fantasies and shooting and slashing dudes in the face all the time, but when a game that’s the exact opposite comes up, like this one, they love to smash it into bits just because it doesn’t feature state-of-the-art graphics or plenty of ammo or other minor technicalities. Go PSN users!

  • Yeeeeah! Nice. Can someone reply to this please? Im begging and asking nicely :( Can you guys consider bringing Star Ocean: TIll The End Of Time to the PlayStation Store? That was a PS2 classic and I (amongst alot of others) would like to see it there.

    • me too! Although there are some factors involved in this. One would be whether S-E would sign off on the approvals to do this and second would be whether or not it’s technically feasible to emulate at this time. I loved that game though; probably the only game I’ve sunk 100+ hours into.

  • We need mooore PS Vita games :(

  • Mortal Kombat Vita should make the top 10 vita list next month…at least according to near, i think it will

  • I currently have over 120 games downloaded on my XMB.
Even though I have them compartmentalized into PSN Games, Full Retail Games, PSone Classics, PSminiS, demos, betas, etc I’d still like to see you guys give us better sorting options.

Sub folders would be neat, the ability to put one game into 2 different folders, and ALPHABETICAL order.

Seems weird that the most popular method of sorting is not an option. Please send this on to the relevant department. I’ll keep buying stuff.

  • Microsoft just announced Minecraft sold 1 million copies in 5 days on XBLA. Before that Trials sold half a million. How come we don’t get any hard numbers for PSN games? Is it because the sales figures are a lot lower? Would be interested to see what Journey has sold.

  • Would have liked to see a selling stats for ps2 classics tho i can understand why seeing how there is only like 10ish of those currently available. Which BTW Thank you again for max payne and Persona 3 fes. No surprise on FF7 i gotta say, and im glad Resident evil is on multiple lists this is really the year of resident evil with Revelations, and the new CG film coming out later (damnation) and with Retribution coming in September ohh and yeah RE6 near this years end too!!!!(also unforunatly Operations Raccoon City came out)

  • Let’s get some news about Pure Chess and Foosball 2012!

  • I second expanding the Top 5 for PS1 and PSP, as well as a Top X for PS2. Silly FFVII, but whoo for Journey and Skullgirls! And Capcom, are you paying attention? Maverick Hunter X is holding up. At the least, release Powered Up as a UMD Legacy title.

  • MEGA MAN X on psp top 5!!!! It proves that Mega Man X isn’t dead after all!! Please sony, bring us Mega Man X Collection for ps2 classics!!

  • I cant believe I am Alive is the #1 game. After playing the demo I didn’t feel like it was that great of a game. It kinda felt repetitive and at times it got frustrating. Also the reviews were not good at all.

I am still hoping soon plus members will get Journey free I want to play it but I feel like 15 dollars it a tad much.

  • I Am Alive is terrible. Bad graphics, annoying gameplay. Walking Dead should seriously be on top.

  • Oh, I have a reason every Vita owner should not have Escape Plan: The price is too high for what you get.

  • Escape Plans price point is keeping it at the top of the VITA list. The game is good, but at that price, its a no brainer. More developers and publishers need to take note. $15-$25 is the sweet spot for portable gaming.

  • @16,

You really should pay the $15 for the quality game that is Journey – it’s not too much at all.

  • Okay since FFVII is like always #1 on the PS1 list, there should definitely be some characters on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale from FFVII.

  • @18

I’m going to be that guy in this post. Escape Plan is an excellent game, and well worth the money! A recent update made it even better.

What is it people expect these days? A lot clearly goes into making these games. $10 – $15 is a deal. How many people spent this much to see The Avengers in 3D? Awesome movie, but what – 2.5 hours of entertainment? Can you go back to the theater to watch it again?

    • agree! Even for Jourey, which took me about 3.5 hours to go through the first time; it was well worth it. Especially considering I replayed it 2 times, then watched two friends play through it. Entertaining everytime, just like a great movie.

  • #10 – AsiaQatar: I have constantly tried asking that on the share blog, bit it never get’s accepted/posted. That has been annoying me since Day 1 with the XMB. I love my things sorted alphabetically, not the order which they’ve been installed. For instace my PS1 folder goes – Final Fantasy 7, 9 8 Megaman 3, 1, 2, Resident Evil 1, 3, 2, Final Fantasy 5, 6, Origins. I don’t want to have to redownload every game every time a new one comes out, it’s just rediculous.

  • Nice to see games that has been out for quite sometime still selling. that means more people are buying ps3.

  • @10 (AsiaQatar),

I suggested in a different post a way to sort games on the XMB. Allow us to add tags to games by hitting triangle to go to the same place where we’d name them for an album. That way, all games of a similar tag would be in that folder, but you’ll be able to find the same game in multiple folders by doing this. Example:

Tag a game “couch_co-op”, and MotorStorm RC, PixelJunk Monsters Encore, and Dead Nation will appear in that folder.
Tag a game “race”, and PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap and MotorStorm RC will appear in that folder.
Tag a game “PixelJunk” and PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap and PixelJunk Monsters Encore will appear in that folder.

If it isn’t possible to show them all in different folders at the same time, let us hit square to cycle through the folders named after the tags.

  • Escape Plan seems to be a great game, but I’m not risking buying digital for a game that I may or may not like. I need to try a demo

  • @23 & @25

Great ideas. This probably is something Sony hadnt thought about at the introduction of The PlaySation Store, but now that there are a lot of us with a LOT of data on our systems, it needs to be more flexible, highly customizable, and user friendly.

  • They should really bring back Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories. I’d pay alot of money for that game, seriously.

  • us at ps legioniaree group are not surpise im alive is number 1.. its a very good game. its a challenge which what gaming should be about.. You think you get throught the game without dying hahaha.. If made hooro game with these elements in it.. ha 100million sold..It really should be on ps vita.. something to think about

Its a a very good game.. Escape plan is too..Its very a funny game .. I hope capcom wakes up and gives us a monster game for ps3 or vita. becuase this game sells alot of units for all ps consoles.. We have fan base , the list don tlie look capcom.

Now if you’ll excuse i have to go play “im alive” and not get out this time for 1millionth try in;(

  • @16, saab- I too tried the demo. The movement seemed abit cluncky & while the stamina mechanic is realistic- I was not thrilled when I was able to reach an area just before the limits of the character & STILL had to eat to move on (this is after resting on solid ground). That’s just weird to me. I played risk/reward & still had to use an item… that just turned it off for me.

I love the environments, the setting, voice work is decent, realism (hit or miss at times), & the price is affordable. I think many gamers had this title on the radar when it was announced long ago which led to the sales. The premise is alluring imo, & I truly appreciate that a demo was released, yet that stamina bit really annoyed me because I know items are rare & like in the Fallout/Oblivion series, I love to micromanage my gear. If the devs reworked how the stamina bar operates into a sequel or even better into a full retail release sequel, I’ll jump on that.

  • Will the EU PS3 owners be getting Pinbal Arcade unlike the The Williams Collection?

  • @26, I just have too many titiles to work on, or else I would have bought Escape Plan already. If you’re looking for something different & don’t mind touch controls- you’ll like Escape Plan. I played it on my friend’s Vita (actually, Sony should incorporate some kind of timed gameshare between local Vitas) & it was fun. Read the reviews & look up some vids, it should give you a great idea on how Escape Plan plays.

Suprised at Castle Crashers, it’s a fantastic co-op experience. Too bad the dev doesn’t have enough manpower to release their next game simul. for the PSN.

Tales from Space is an amazing little gem. I can’t wait to see what’s next from the devs.

I’m still playing Unit 13; kinda wish another team would release more missions via DLC.

  • I got a feeling that The Legend of the Dragoon is taking the PS1 spot for May :D

Also I have to give some notice to House of the Dead 4, being in 5th and being released only on the 17th *claps* I am Alive deserved that number one spot though. Ubisoft showed a lot of love with that game.

Any idea if we are still getting Rock of Ages on PSN today?

  • Just picked up House of the Dead 4 today. Move control works very well with it. Still no match for Overkill: Extended Cut, though. :P

  • I was a little nervous when I bought Gotham City Impostors on launch day, as although I loved the beta, I was worried that the community for it wouldn’t show up. I’m happy to say that the community stepped up to bat and has been steadily increasing in number and in quality. I very rarely spend more than a minute or two waiting for a game, and it’s always a blast. The developer support is top notch, with the frequent free DLC packs and the ever-changing community feats of prowess. If you’ve been holding off on picking this title up, worried about lack of players, fear not!

  • Happy to see SkullGirls made it in the top 3!

  • Make the “Kingdom Hearts” series available to download in PSN STORE :)

  • I know i’m repeating what many have already written , but we really need a sort option for the PSN store purchases “Download List”. I have purchased almost 500 different items and obviously I can’t fit all those titles on my hard drive, so whenever I want to re-download a previously purchased title I have to scroll through 500 games to find the one I want. Many have been asking for this sort option for a while now. Will it happen soon?

Also, any chance of getting the “Enslaved” pre-order bonus skins available for purchase on PSN
    AND / OR
A Playstation Plus discount for “Corpse Party”?

Tuesday is my favorite day of the week now thanks to all the awesome weekly updates to PSN and PS Plus.

  • Congrats to Skullgirls, hope you can continue to sell well. Very good fighting game. Best of 2012 so far.

  • o_BAD_RELIGION_o

Love to see the Final Fantasy series represented in the PSOne section. Trophy addiction to those games would be so crazy. Maybe one day.

  • o_BAD_RELIGION_o

  • yeah, would be great it we had some more catigorization options for games on the xmb

  • Hey Heart Stopper12

Go search google for ” ps3 wont read discs fix”

The first response should be “Playstation 3 won’t read discs? apparently this is a common …”

Click that and try out what is there, I have had this problem with my older model. If nothing works there, it may be a more serious problem,

  • Heart_stopper12

    Thanks OneMoreVillain hopefully it works

  • Wow very nice but Sony cmon where are the old tenchu games for download oh, i love tencu how come we can’t get any of those games to download oh games like inhander, para pa the rapper musashi brave little fencer from the ps1 era those are good game we need more classic game

  • Come on, PS1 support on Vita already…because we ALL just want to play FF7 on our Vitas :)

  • Shame that I Am Alive is only a fraction of what it could have been. And the fraction it is, is terrible to me. Game is super ugly too. Ubisoft disappointed me with that one. Oh well, another Rayman, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 next generation is all I need.

  • Alright, I lost it at FFVII is FFVII. Nice list, though. Really need to pick up I Am Alive soon, keep hearing awesome things about it.
