Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Update – Interview, New Details

When it was first launched back in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV for PC was criticized by players and the media, and eventually the planned PS3 version was postponed. Since then, Square Enix decided to reshuffle the leading developers of the game, with Naoki Yoshida now acting as Director and Producer. His challenge is to helm the 2.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV, which is a re-imagination of the original release. It will mark a new beginning for the game when (update: the beta) gets launched this winter, coinciding with the release of the anticipated PS3 version.

The game was not ready to be demoed publicly at E3 this year, but we got a chance to see a brief live demo behind closed doors of the game still running on a PC. It featured lush visuals, with a richly detailed character running through a forest area with dense vegetation and impressive lighting effects passing through foliage. It was something we definitely aren’t used to see in an MMORPG. “Right now it’s optimized for PC. We’re about 50% into the development of the PS3 version, but it’s pretty much how it’s going to look on the console as well,” explains Yoshida. “It uses the same new graphics engine we built just for this game. This summer we’ll have an opportunity to show the PS3 version.”

In the meantime, he briefed us on what to expect from the new version of the game. “We believe that Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 can be considered the next real Final Fantasy game in the series,” he adds. This re-release is based on three pillars that have also been the aspects the series is known for: high quality gameplay, great storyline and beautiful graphics. “And on top of that, there´s our MMORPG community, which will consist of both PC players and also the PS3 players all over the world.” Which means the game will be cross-platform, like FFXI before it on PS2 and PC.

Yoshida-san is quick to emphasize how the legacy is going to be a driving force for this episode: “We’ll have some Final Fantasy staples as well, like chocobos, moogles and summons. But what is a little bit different is that these summons are like demigods in this world, so they´re really powerful, and it’ll take cooperation of all the players to fight these battles.”

Of course, bringing an MMORPG to a console system means tackling some big challenges. “It is a thing that didn’t have been done a lot in the past, and we have to make sure that we design an user interface and control scheme specially for these players”, explains Yoshida. “And we’ll also be adding in-game tutorials and quests that will help players that might not be comfortable with MMOs, and when they play the game, they will feel like they’re playing a console game that just happens to be online.”

Things are looking promising for the second coming of Final Fantasy XIV, and PlayStation fans will finally have the chance to explore the lush visuals of Eorzea in this deeply-revised version of the title. Below, Yoshida-san goes deeper in some details of his project. And we can’t wait to gather some friends and ride some chocobos around those wonderful vistas.

PlayStation.Blog: Besides the new control scheme and new user interface, does the PS3 version have any new exclusive features compared to the PC version?
Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director: Because PS3 players and PC players will all be on the same servers, we can’t give either group something special, because everyone is playing together.

But we know that a lot of players have a PS3 and PCs as well, and depending on the mood, sometimes you want to sit down and play in front of your screen, whereas in other times you want to sit back on your couch, relax with controller in hand and play. We believe that we offer opportunities for players to enjoy both worlds.

PSB: Final Fantasy has a rich universe, evolving its mythos and its narrative from episode to episode. How do you translate this into a massive open world, into an MMO form, where players can dictate the story?
Yoshida-san: It is an open world in the sense that you can explore freely, but in this open world you have this very detailed story, which has a beginning and an ending. What is good is that, once that story ends, we can add new tales. That’s one of the greatest thing about an MMO: you expand a certain story or add new storylines via patches.

PSB: We know some friends that still plays Final Fantasy XI today, 10 years after it was first launched. Do you have a roadmap to keep supporting FFXIV long after its launch?
Yoshida-san: Yes, definitely.

PSB: Are you incorporating easter eggs for fans of the series?
Yoshida-san: Yes, we’re definitely planning on lots of references to past Final Fantasies. This is a game we believe is for the fans of the series, so we want to bring back a lot of nostalgic monsters and other things. For example, we’re planning the Crystal Tower, which is the last dungeon of Final Fantasy III. Basically we’re taking all the great things from the the first 13 episodes, squeezing it into the game and giving them some polish. For example, in FFIII you were limited by the technology of the time, and we’re going to re-render that using high quality graphics. So you’ll have the opportunity to re-visit these sections and see the difference between the lower quality graphics from the past and the high resolution visuals of FFXIV.

PSB: Being players of Final Fantasy XI as well, we know the game was really party-based, and that was a problem with some audiences. Can you also play solo on in Final Fantasy XIV?
Yoshida-san: Definitely, you’ll be able to play the content solo too – it won’t be as party-based as Final Fantasy XI. But, on the other hand, we believe that in this current generation there are a lot of people with time constraints, and it’s hard for them to spend time finding a party. So we’re going to make sure that, for party-based contents, we make it easier to recruit a party. With the Content Finder tool, you’re going to be able to decide “Okay, I want to do this today”, then simply press the button and you’ll be joined by other people with similar goals. So you’ll be able to decide if you’re making a party and, if you don’t have the time, just press the button on Content Finder and you’re automatically in a party.

PSB: With the game finally launching on PS3 soon, how are you planning to attract those potential new players? You know, the console audience is very different from the traditional PC gamer.
Yoshida: We know that a lot of console players never played an MMO and they may be scared by not knowing what to do, and we want to stress that it’s very similar to an offline Final Fantasy that always had great stories, made you cry, changed your life. There will be a beta for a limited time where people will be able to try it out. And an additional factor to bring in console games are graphics: something of this quality you can’t have in any MMO title.

PSB: Will there be a public beta for 2.0?
Yoshida-san: Yes.

  • Is the game releasing this or next year?

  • @2: The PS3 version will be out next year.

Will the PS3 version get some footage at TGS?

  • OMG!!!!

i have been waiting for this forever!!!

Please please please let me be a part of the beta test if you have one on PS3. I was in the beta for FFXI on PS2 and ending up playing the game for 4 years after it was finally released!

I’ve been waiting soo long to hear info about this on this for the PS3!

    I cant wait :-)

  • I remember when this was shown at E3 alongside FFXIII. Just a little teaser trailer, and that seems soooo long ago. And it was supposed to be exclusive. I really hope this gets to PS3 sooner than soon. You know that with SE working on FFXIII, XIII-2, FFXIV, and FFvsXIII…(not to mention everything else not FF related) it’s no wonder so many of their titles came out late, and with less than stellar responses from fans and critiques alike. Instead of taking their whole Final Fantasy team to make one awesome title at a time, they split them all up and put ’em on separate titles, making all of them disappointingly lacking.

Look at what Capcom did with Dragon’s Dogma. They took their top guys from several projects, and put them TOGETHER, to make an outstanding game. Final Fantasy needs to go back to this philosophy.

  • is this turn based gameplay or action rpg gameplay?

  • Are we getting the option of the interface we choose to use? The PS3 is not limited to the controller and the PC not limited to KB+M and I’ll likely be getting both versions of this game.

  • Looks kewl

  • FREE TO PLAY OR I’LL PASS.

  • Fabio – Flikr images are marked private…

  • square enix can stick this rehashed PC game back up their collective buttholes.

Versus XIII not being cancelled and remaining exclusive to PS3 is all i care about :/

  • will this be F2P or P2P?

  • Im looking forward to this. I have played XI for awhile now and havent got a chance to play XIV yet because the computer i have cant run it well according to the Benchmark. Having this on the Ps3 (with connectivity on the PC) was a great idea and its nice that they are trying to fix it before they release the game since we all know most users werent satisfied with the launch of the PC version.

Like i said i cant wait! if DC Universe taught/shown me anything is that we need more MMO especially on Consoles. Keep up the good work

  • I have the Collector’s PC edition. I didn’t stick with it, Will I be required to purchase the game again?

  • I seriously stopped thinking about this game. It’s way to long waiting for it. I’ll think about it when the beta starts.. ( I am looking forward to it though )

  • So would playstation + members have first dibs on the beta?

  • I’ll be happy if they make good on the beta promise we were given for buying FFXIII. I still have that at my SE members page, date and code redeemed, so I hope they haven’t forgotten this. Otherwise Plus should get us in unless we ALL have to wait for a public beta.
Actually wish FFXI was getting a PSN release, let Playonline handle server side stuffs, idc. Been playing since it was beta. BUT either way, I will be playing FFXIV as long as those servers are a going..

  • Sorry double post!! Wheres the edit button after all these years web guys? But I’m going to assume this gets a PSN release and blu-ray? Only ask because I don’t see the point of a blu-ray release, just sayin’.

  • @MarinoBrea @Descent2Darkness

Have you guys ever played a F2P game? They all pretty much suck. I’d rather pay the monthly fee than be limited to 1 character, few inventory slots and locked content. not to mention how annoying is to boot up a game and see adds to their store.

Ever since Naoki Yoshida joined the team i’ve gained back some interest in this game. He seems to understand how important player feedback is for an MMO. I’m still not sure when to jump in, when 2.0 launches or wait for PS3 version so i don’t feel behind the beta players?

FFXIV 2.0 reminds me of Rise of the Zilart for FFXI, so i hope that’s a good time to join.

  • UI is looking good. Well, apart from the total annihilation of any consistent naming convention, this seems like an interesting step up from XI, which never caught my interest. (XIV-2 I’d get, 2.0 makes me think of .hack// or Phantasy Star Online for some reason… no other FF game has used a “dot” right?)

  • Winter is to far away.How..about… NOW!!! DANG YOU !!!!!!!

Goodbye DCO..HELLLOOOO NURSE!! WOW, this made my day..

I’ll will be with ya’ll until the better ends. LONG LIVE FF ONLINE & LONG LIVE SONY!!!!

This is why I became a + member.. The feel of love is endless…

  • @Karsghul: No, F2P doesn’t suck anymore. :p Hasty conversions to F2P suck, because the games were designed from the ground up to be a subscription model for years. Going forward the model can only get better, now that the businessmen understand how shaky even the largest IPs can perform in a crowded market. XIV 2.0 is proof that players won’t swallow anything shoveled at them. We have too much choice to settle for less.

  • @AutomaticOcelot

FFXIV is designed as a sub based MMO from the ground up.

  • So very excited for this. For those asking, it’s P2P. It’s going to be pretty massive and NOT micro-transaction based. Which is what most people prefer. Give me ALL the content and let me pay about $0.50 a day.

Played FFXI on and off for about 6 years or so. So happy they didn’t scrap FFXIV and realized they had some decent ideas, just needed a new direction. Not to mention the fact that the game was released way too early. Everything for the past year has been very very positive from what I’ve been seeing and hearing.

Dust514 and FFXIV are going to get quite a lot of my time this year and going into 2013.

  • Nicks & Nacks is all I heard. Play pong if it suit you. Some players WANT to play this.

  • sweet! Can’t wait. I hope I get into the beta. ^_^

  • Ill have to agree with Karsghul, i play a lot of MMO mostly those free one and end up hating them. personally what i call those are free to play, pay to enjoy types of games. you really get no enjoyment out of it unless you buy those microtransaction items.

I too would much rather pay say 15$ a month, than playing for free and having items being bought with real money. especially with MMO as well being free to play is a bad idea since anyone can make an account at will, and thus harassment can be made easily. even if they get banned they can always make another account.

Not saying all f2p mmo are bad. i mean i DC Universe is f2p to an extent and i fully enjoyed that. if XIV was free to play i would much rather it be like that than say Maplestory or Ragnarok.

  • My PS3 is ready. Let me have it!

  • I’m REALLY looking forward to playing FF14. But $15 is alot imo. I’m not so sure I’m willing to pay it. But I’ll make my final choice when I’m playing the beta. Though I really hope when you relaunch the game with 2.0, you consider perhaps a $10 a month sub. That’s about the most I can picture myself paying. I’m really not into paying a subscription to game. ESPECIALLY if I’m also paying for the game in the first place. (I’m not sure how you’re going to handle that…..can you say if it will be a free download?) All these things will figure into my decission on whether or not I become a FF14 subscriber.

Speaking of the beta, can someone from Square answer this please….. When the game changed hands, were the guaranteed beta access from buying FF13 disregarded? Will the beta go out a different way now?

And regarding the convo going on here. I much prefer f2p with micro transactions, or even just buying expansions to fund the game. Home is a good example of how much more people are willing to spend with micro trasactions than those that would subscribe. I love Home but I’d NEVER sub to that, yet I’ve probably spent $100 in there, many have spent MUCH more than me.

  • I really, really hope it’s fixed when it hits PS3. Initially, the game was a broken turd. The screenshots look beautiful, and the promise of playing with PC gamers is nice.

QUESTION: Will the PS3 version have a mouse and keyboard option?

QUESTION: Will the PS3 version have a monthly rate or just have microtransactions? Will PS+ get a discount?

QUESTION: Where the heck is Final Fantasy Vs? Will it be at TGS along with FFXIV?

  • F2P is just the more successful model, especially with the economy being like it is all over the world. DUST514 is going to do VERY well for itself as F2P with micro-transactions on PS3. But no disrespect to the game, but how do you think it would do as a sunscription based game instead? Pretty bad I reckon. In fact there’d probably be 17 people playing and 10 of them will have won a free suscription from some website. Look at DCUO……..so few people were subscribing they had to go F2P, and now they’re doing pretty well.

All that being said though. Now that serious MMOs are starting to hit PS3, I’m very open minded to an actual subscription MMO, though I don’t know if I’m open minded to $15 a month. But it’s going to have to be an amazing MMORPG. And FF14 certainly has the potential to be that first MMO I’m willing to pay for from what I’ve seen and read of 2.0. If it’s not up my alley, I’m holding out hope for the inevitable EverQuest for PS3.

Full disclosure though……..whether it FF14 or EverQuest or whatever else, it’s going to be hard for me to get over a $15 a month sub. $10 a month/$100 for a whole year is about the most I can envision myself paying.

  • NO!!! When I first saw the title of this post I thought it was new information about Final Fantasy Versus XIII but I was left with disappointment.

  • @1 Game will come THIS WINTER! Means end of December to first weeks of January Gamestop listing game to be out on December 31, 2012.. even with that estimate I will be happy if it comes in a middle of winter.
@ 5 Are you serious man?! did you ever play the game even on PC? lol Of course its Action Adventure MMORPG which I am dying to get my hand on the PS3 version of it.
@6 Good point I have PC one already. if this pictures the final product I am glad I support them from the start even if first try didn’t worked well… There is always second chance.
@13 You’ll get massive patch update once 2.0 lunches, but as for PS3 version Yes you’ll have to buy it
@28 $15.a month is like 45 cents a day or would you better pay 40 or more a month on F2P premium.. where is logic man?

  • @30 F2P and freemium it is 2 diffrent worlds as business models.
in F2P you are limited and content and features are locked up and you have to buy in game currency to unlock them on recurring basics
Freemium all content can be unlocked while progressing in the game.. if you use in game currency the things you buy are permanent but hese are not effecting gameplay what so ever

  • @igor

Breaking it down to the day to make it seem cheaper doesn’t work on me. You could break it down to the minute, idc. No offense, I’m not being argumentative, I’m just saying. People use that same kind of justification for Xbox Live, and I’m still not willing to pay for that either. If you pay initially for the game…..or the system……I’m not willing to also pay more for the mere right to play online. I’m willing to pay for other things, but not for something I should have the right to anyway since I bought the product, plus I have to pay for the internet itself. If I’m not willing to pay $60 a year for XBL, $15 a MONTH if going to be a hard sell to me.

Regardless of how you break it down, it’s $15 a month I have to pay or can’t play. It’s a bill. I have enough bills. I don’t want a bill for gaming. So it’s going to have to be something pretty special to even consider that sub, and even if it is good, $15 a month or I can’t play is likely to put me off. $10 a month is about my cut-off as of now, because evn if it were a game that was f2p but you buy in-game items or whatever, $10 a month is about what I’d spend on those items.

  • BTW, as negative as I’m coming off about it, I am open to a subscription MMO if it’s great, and from what I’m seeing of FF14 2.0, it looks to be just about the greatest MMO to date based on what’s out there now. This game is absolutely the first I’m I’m going to seriously consider paying a subscription to play. And from me, that’s high praise indeed.

  • It was sad that the previous Devs refused to listen to the hundreds of complaints about the problems with the game back when it was in Alpha and Beta. On release the game was pretty much unplayable for most people because of system specs, horrible controls, and horrible camera issues. Everyone who was in the tests pretty much stopped testing anything after one of the Devs basically told us to shut up. No real surprise why the game was delayed for the PS3.

As for the 2.0 release, it might look good and all, but until they remove some of the core issues with the game that didn’t really pan out to well, like maximum experience per week, horrible dialog text, horrible controls, and steep learning curve, then it is simply going to fail again. The fact that 1.0 was pretty much FTP (free-to-play) for almost a year because of the amount of issues it was having doesn’t give many people faith.

  • I’m excited. Tell SquareEnix their No.1 fan is making this a pre-order, day 1 buy.

  • well this game have a monthy cost to play ?

  • Wow this looks awesome. Will we be able to crossplay between platform, and when will the beta sign-up start?

  • As a long time ffxi player, mmorpg player in general. I gotta clear some misconception on f2p and p2p models. First off yes free 2 play is a crap model. Most games that go free to play do so for low subs. And only way to get money is to charge u for items/skills/content. You can pay upward $60-$100 a mnth easy. See mmorpg are a different breed of game. They are run online only on servers which need constent upkeep, and devs need to be payed to make content. Which is what the sub pays for. ffxiv will have 2 sets of payment options 12.99 for up to 8 characters (think 1 per server) or 14.99 and have up to 40 characters (8 per world i think). unlike most mmorpg, ffxiv as it was in ffxi character you make can do everything they are not locked out based on 1 character 1 class like WoW.

  • First MMO i’m interested in. How about a limited edition for PA3?

  • what happen with dcuo wasn’t due to p2p model the game sucked. It was poorly optimized and only could be played on a HD tv if u played it on an SD tv ur HUD/ UI was trash. the worlds where too small and the pvp was asinine. The hero and villian mission ran along side each other which made it hard to level. Not to mention with in the first year and promises the head dude made was broken. Holiday evens ran late (st paddies day near easter for example) if u gonna compare console mmo look @ ffxi. 10 years it still running on the ps2 and 360. And still has a good 10 servers. dcuo 2 servers…. i rather pay $13 or $15 and have free content outside of expacks. then pay $60+ just to keep up with everyone. heck ppl shell out tons for their pshome avitar. that $0.50- $20 adds up.

  • @39

Yes it is cross platform play between PS3 and PC. I hear the beta sign up is this fall. I could be wrong.

  • @ Grayfox2k8: Guess we all have to settle for Dust 514? Anybody excited? Did the beta start?

  • i really really hope they DO NOT make this free to play. free to play has killed many mmo’s especially the few mmo’s that are out on PS3. FFXI was not f2p and was great. F2P makes companies go nuts for micro transactions and make them forget about gameplay and issues. i am really hoping they keep the billing like in FFXI.really looking forward to this

  • Anybody know where the beta sign up is or when it may be?

I play this on PC but for the new graphics on 2.0 i might have to either get money to buy a new one or just buy the PS3 version and play it on my TV.

  • i’m sorry but i have to dissagree with RaveniaDarkfae about some of the things said about DCUO. i played since june of last year and i can say F2P just killed what was already dying. because the microtransactions were so successful they had to add things constantly and rush content. 4 DLC within less than 2 years is a bit much. about the hero and villian missions running besides each other, that was easily fixed if you switched to non PVP(player versus player) to PVE(player versus enviornment) where villians and heroes could not attack each other. then they also realeased replay badges which lets you unlock missions that could only be done once a week or daily. so people were basically buying their gear by unlocking the missions to get the currency needed to buy them.spending 200$+ of real money,so people in turn would have to buy them to keep up with people. then compllain they were bored forcing more dlc and faster. causes more bugs and not even fixing the current ones. if the F2P would of never came to DCUO they wouldnt of needed to come out with replay badges which is the current killer to DCUO.

  • I am so excited for this game…its the kind of game I wanted to see at E3 this year.

  • Looking forward to this release. Been waiting a long time….
