A Quick Slice with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Leading into the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Kojima Productions tantalized MGS fans with an iconic trailer that depicted a cybernetically augmented Raiden (a la Gray Fox) slicing and dicing hordes of foes using a razor-sharp sword and acrobatic flips. MGS4’s Raiden was a refreshing departure from his whiny, abrasive turn in MGS2: Sons of Liberty, and before long series fans fantasized about controlling him in a dedicated adventure. Luckily, that fantasy will become reality thanks to Kojima Productions and Platinum Games.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance takes place nine years after the fall of the Patriots in MGS4. We played a demo at E3 2012 and tested Blade Mode, which you probably saw in the game’s trailer. Blade Mode is very simple: you activate it using L2, which triggers slow-mo and a zoomed-in camera view while Raiden gets into slashing position. You control the sword with the right analog stick: Everything in the path of the sword will be severed, whether it’s a structure, the body of an unfortunate combatant, a vehicle…even a girl’s dress (ooh-la-la!)

But Blade Mode is even more satisfying when you can work it into a combo by lifting an enemy from the floor and turning him into human sushi. The MGRR controls work to perfection; the game runs at 60 frames per second. Raiden is very fast, and the combo system is simple but visually spectacular, especially when you take hold of the sword with your feet and you slice everything around you to pieces — yes, just like that trailer from MGS4!

At E3, Platinum Games Executive Director and Producer Atsushi Inaba confirmed to us that MGRR will feature many references to the Metal Gear universe. One example: We were tasked with obtaining a code from an enemy, and this was found hidden in a box. The Gekkos from MGS4 also make an appearance, but you have to apply a counter before being able to attack them: press Triangle just before being hit and you’ll be slicing and dicing in no time.

The main advantage that I see in MGRR is that it feels like a completely fresh product. It is a great action game from a series that has millions of followers, and it may also attract a new audience which eventually could become interested in the adventures of the two Snakes.

There is still a long time to wait before MGRR goes on sale (recently confirmed to be early 2013) and we have many questions. Will we learn more about Raiden’s cyborg transformation? Will we see more characters from the Metal Gear universe? What happened to Sunny, the daughter of Olga? We’ll have to wait until 2013 to find out.

  • awww, no new gameplay video?

  • My money, you can take it.

  • The trailers haven’t worked for me at all but Gametrailer’s extended preview made me want to play this game. When I first heard of Rising, I was really excited, then the trailers from Platinum Games started showing up and that dampened my enthusiasm. Thankfully it’s up again with said Gametrailer’s extended preview. Looking forward to more gameplay footage!

  • Insert you money here!

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

LMFAO at the PS2 jaggies for graphics shown in the Rising E3 trailer.

…but then i remember that its a multiformat game from the same team who didn’t care about making bayonetta run properly on PS3 :/

  • It’s going to be awesome!

  • Someone take this garbage out back and put a bullet between its eyes.

It’s no wonder Kojima stood up in front of the Sony E3 conference a couple years ago and told everyone he had nothing to do with this piece of junk game.

  • “What happened to Sunny, the daughter of Olga?”… Really?!?!?! I don’t wanna know about Sunny! I would want to know about Sunny IF this game was placed somewhere before MGS4 in the series timeline (despite the fact that we don’t know the plot yet, I think it would be more appropriate and interesting). Knowing the plot will be placed nine years after the end of MGS4 the question is: WHERE IS (AND WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO) LITTLE JOHN!!!

  • LOL @ j_amethyst

This garbage has nothing to do with real Metal Gear games…

    Kojima has disowned it.
Kojima has stated nothing in this junk is part of the real Metal Gear universe.

  • Even if this had nothing to do with Metal Gear, it would be awesome. Why? Because Platinum Games is making it. Makers of Bayonetta, Vanquish, and consisting of some of the best game designers in the industry. Have faith, In Platinum We Trust!

  • …Metal Gear!?

  • @MP_is_for_Chumps Incorrect. Platinum Games partnered with SEGA to make Bayonetta, the reason the competition was chosen was because of budgetary constraints. Because of architectural differences, it is much easier to code for the PS3 then port to the other system than to do the reverse. After much public outcry Platinum stated that for future titles, they would use PS3 as the lead platform and port to the rest. This is the case now.

  • Thank you for the update, Lorenzo!
Platinum always deliver great action games, waiting for it.

And for Metal Gear Solid 5 too :)

  • I preferred the original debut gameplay engine.

  • Amazing!

  • Is there going to be any demo?

  • Platinum Games is the best! Also: 60fps.

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

    @ FredPunella

    Exactly right dude.

Platinum-overrated-Games can kiss my sweaty hairy balls. The only person who can make this game is Kojima. Anything else is just fangirl hot air ._.

  • It should be solid(no pun intended). But I’d like to see sony grab the rights for Black Panther and make an action/adventure out of it! It could be better than Batman if they did it right.

  • Awesome. Can’t wait for this game to come out in early 2013. By the way, speaking of being released in early 2013… Will we have Special, Limited, Collector’s, Ultimate, MEGA, Top-Notch of all Editions…???

  • I am excited for this spin-ff. I do love Platinum Games! Play Vanquish and you will see the quality they bring to the table.

  • @j_amethyst
Sunny was a genius who’s knowledge rivaled Otacons and was capable of cracking a code he couldn’t as a child. Nine years later, if she’s still around I’m sure she would be a VERY important and I hope she would show up because she would be a great member of “team raiden”. She could be his Otacon.

    @ every other whiney baby
MGRising is a spin off that adopts a different play style and lead character (or former lead character). I don’t see what the problem is. Did Halo fans cry when they released a RTS Halo game? Where Final Fantasy fans crying when they announced a FF Versus, a game that is suppose to be real time action with a Kingdom hearts style of play? No! Are you guys really trying to say that Metal Gear fans of today are nothing but adolescents that have trouble comprehending things?

    @Lorenzo Grajales
Thanks for giving us the dl on the game. I’m glad that everyone that actually played the demo so far had good things to say. I can’t wait to try it! More screen shots and info on the game is always appreciated.

  • Bayonetta over the action in the Metal Gear universe.

    Win.

  • A Metal Gear without Kojima? No thank you, I’ll stick to my HD collection.

  • Sorry to say i didn’t like the way Kojima went on Microsoft’s E3 stage a few years back & showed this game at that Xbox 360 E3 show :-/ I felt it was a slap in the face to all his loyal PlayStation Fans doing that & to SONY’s PS3 to(the PS3+SONY didn’t need that at that time really after FF13 went Xbox 360 to, or was that the year before i can’t remember) So i won’t be buying it :-/ + a Multi-format MGS game does nothing for me really(not that this is a real MGS game) SNAAAAAAAKE…Oh ‘NOOO NOT SNAKE!!!’(at least Kojima said that at that E3, CLASSIC) :-D

But i still think Kojima is a gaming GOD MGS1 is still one of my best game ever :-P

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

    OOOHHHHH i get it now!

Platinum fangirls are all over this because Bayonetta 2 got cancelled LMFAO :D

…these guys actually care very little for the MGS franchise we all grew up with. If they did, they’d see this train wreck of a unwanted game for what it actually is:

An abortion not worthy of the title “Metal Gear” :/

  • About time that we got a post about Metal Gear Rising with the Metal Gear Solid franchise being a core part of PlayStation gamers and us being most likely to pick this game up as well since we are the only ones that have MGS4. Would be great to get PG or Konami to write up a post as well and throw us a bone.

  • hmm i think raiden is the new big boss. The game looks very good. I dnt like spin off but i think its a good thing to do till the real one comes out. better than nothing..

But i do think raiden is the new big boss now

  • Awesome, I just hope the storyline is good.

  • I hate when people run the “cyborg ninja” together as if they’re (Gray Fox, Olga, Raiden) the same or not worthy of differentiating between…
    *grumble grumble*

    Anyway, it’s Metal Gear so looking forward to it. Still need to beat Bayonetta D;

  • For those who say: “A MGS game without Kojima is garbage” have played Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops? Because it was directed by Masahiro Yamamoto, and it´s an amazing game.

  • @30 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a far superior game and Hideo Kojima worked on that. I have the utmost faith on Platinum Games since they know what they are doing, but Kojima’s games are amazing too.

  • It seems like our semi cyborg hybrid has been training with a certain Mr. Hayabusa lol

  • I would love to hear what makes this game “garbage”. Ive seen nothing but awesomeness coming from this game. Im a huge Metal Gear fan and I’m definitely looking forward to playing this game. Just because Kojima is not involved its automatically garbage? Thats the stupidest thing Ive ever heard.

  • let me explain how this game fits in the universe… if any of you are REAL metal gear fans and actually listened to the cut scenes in mgs 4 it explains how raiden was locked in area 51 and how he was made a cyborg by the patriots then he slashed his way out of there and met big momma and she told her to find sunny which he did for otacon… and this game is made by both platinum games and kojima productions its more like a 35 kojima and a 65 platinum… i see why kojima cant be so much apart of theses games like mgs 4 because hes vice president of konami japan… he has way too much on his plate to do games because he oversees all the games that come out of japan… so quit bitching and enjoy a great game… and to you idiot who believes its glitchy like bayonetta its not…. kojima explained how this game is going to be made for the ps3 then ported to the xbox…. even though as a metal gear fan this game makes me skepitcal i will read the reviews from editoral websites like ign and then decide whether i should get the game or not…

  • if this is set maybe a few years after mgs4, id really like a teen sunny doing raidens tech support. totally badass that way. itd be cool if otacon is still around too…. what if it turns out to not be raiden but actually raidens son and its much later than it seems. plot twist anyone?!!!!1

  • where’s MGS HD Collection ????

    EU/JP/AS got them months ago.

  • people complain about rising being garbage and not part of the metal gear solid universe are foolish. they haven’t even played it, and are judging it by it’s cover-which looks awesome. refusing to play it is only deriving them of a potentially great game.

  • @33: Just crying MGS fanboys. “DA PURITY, DEY RUINZ ETTTT”

Just ignore them. Everyone with a properly functioning brain knows that Platinum Games makes amazing gameplay. Anyone that says otherwise is either confusing, “this isn’t fun for me” with “bad” or they’re just stupid.

  • #@33 i feel your pain trying to make sense out of nonsense that people shamelessly spit out of their mouths without even thinking. Unfortunately I don’t know why humans fear change so much that they get angry even about a video game. Imagine a political change for things that actually mater, oh my, they would probably eat that politician alive. The same happened when Itagaki got canned by Team Ninja, they said ninja gaiden sigma 2 is going to suck, and when it came out they knew it was a much better game than the 1st, and still said that the 1st was better just because there was change in it, even though every single change that was made clearly improved the game, go figure. Anyways, as a person who does not appreciate stealth, and likes fast real time fighting, this is a welcomed improvement for me.

Didn’t Kojima work on Castlevania lords of shadows? Very unimpressed here with that game’s story. He is not a person who turns into gold everything that he touches, so chill out, alright? lol

  • this looks bad ass.. cant wait to play this

  • Heya, I love all metal gear, and I’m excited to get this version, but I’d also like to play all the Metal gear games on my Vita, I have the HD collection, but I want Portable ops and Portable ops Plus to play as well. I’ve bought them on UMD and am ready to get them again digitally, but they’re not playable on the Vita in NA, they ARE in Europe though.

    Get Sony on it!

Also, give us a good sale so we can get them all cheap! I have Peacewalker on UMD too, but not digitally, for not putting in the HD collection you should give us all three for like… 20 bucks!

    That would be great.

  • XBOX 360 4EVER!

  • Oh, anything (Snake, Raiden, Konami, Platinum…) as long they bring MGO back!

  • I’ll pass on this. Once Kojima is back on board the MGS train (if he ever is, take your time Kojima) I’ll pick up the next installment, not this travesty that disregards the ending of MGS4 and doesn’t even have the stealth elements that I buy MGS for.

  • I agree with all the other Snake-faithfuls. I don’t think this will be garbage, per-se, but it’s DEFINITELY not a true Metal Gear game. I’ve been playing the series since I was a kid, over 20 years ago with the first Metal Gear game on NES. The journey and 20 year long gaming experience it brought me was intense, emotional, and perhaps one of the most non-fail feelings of perfection with every installment.

To add, the original Metal Gear 2, on NES, was something Kojima did not get behind, much like this game. He came back later to make the TRUE second game, and it was amazing. As far as I know it, he’s done with the MG series for now, focusing efforts on other things like Zone of the Enders and such. Good for him, I say, he is an amazing mind, and I’m not deluded by ideas of him touching everything and turning it to gold, however, CREATING something and WORKING ON something are two entirely different things, and everything he has CREATED, has been nothing short of legendary.

  • Also lulz to everyone saying “DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT’S COVER BAAAWWW BAAAWWW” and then in the same post saying “THIS GAME LOOKS AMAZING DERP DERP DERP”
