PS3 System Software Update (v4.20)

Tomorrow we will be releasing a new system software update (v4.20) for PlayStation 3 which will include a few minor updates in order to strengthen functionality and improve your overall experience.

As mentioned in our previous blog post, system software update (v4.10) added a feature that enabled you to hear your own voice through the Wireless Stereo Headset when playing multiplayer modes. This type of audio feedback is known as “sidetone.” Based on your comments, system software update (v4.20) will improve sidetone audio performance by giving you the option to select one out of five levels for microphone audio, or turn the feature off completely. For those of you who use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality, giving you a superior audio experience.

This update will also allow you to set the amount of time that the system will wait before turning itself off automatically for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features].

Additionally, saved data management has been improved. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.

More details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

  • I know because of memory in the system cross chat will not be accomplished on this system, but looking forward to it on ps4 along with a new XMB, but could you possibly add a private chat for two people on the same game, with voice, or a mute all feature, im sick of going player to player muting everyone :/

  • also it may be a stretch but could we put our games into our own folders and name them, or is that too much?

  • The system software update sounds nice and all but you guy need to come back with the Big updates you guy need to add a chat party or what ever they call it on xbox so we don’t have to hear alot of random people in a game lobby all the time like on MW3 for instants and you guy need to add a online friends list so if your friend has a friend you know on their friends list you can go on their friends list and add them that wood be nice for the system software update

  • There’s only one thing I’ve really wanted as far as interface updates go: user-defined [meta tag] sorting for games, pictures, etc. The sorting for games is horrendous. I’m a PS+ member and I download and play pretty much everything that perks an interest plus the games I decide to purchase online. The basic sorting options are less than rudimentary and really needs an overhaul. That seems like a rather simple feature request. I mean ideally, every game would have meta tags associated with it on download (fps, rpg, action, racing, mmo, etc), but I’d settle for user-defined for now.

  • I’m looking forward to this update. Gotta see how it will run. I’ll be keep my eyes open about it.

@99 if you mean on the ps3, there is already a feature like that. press triangle on a game, go down to album, enter in a desired name. do the same name for a few more games. press square until you see the folder you named (pressing square will cycle through different folder types, like format and album name. also works with music, videos, and photos) (the rest will be under ‘unknown’ because you didnt put a name under the album). hope this helps. :)

  • I also heard a roomer about the PS4 is not going to have a trophies system is that true please comment back if this is true or not

  • So this mean no more popping or cracking in Sony wireless headset? And improve wireless 7.1 audio for netflix?

  • @40, you are grossly underestimating the difficulty of implementing remote play in a usable fashion. Even if implemented perfectly, lag would still ruin most games(at least for those of us with average or better reflexes); that is not a solvable problem today, nor for the foreseeable future.

Lack of remote play in specific games is due to the game not allowing it; the PS3 is actually capable of remote play for most games. Hackers/modders have used hacks to enable remote play for everything.

Sony can’t enable remote play for everything without permission of content producers. If devs choose not to allow it, there is simply nothing Sony can do. Look at it from a developer’s POV; they may not want their game to run in a limited fashion, or they may be spending millions on a portable version. If you want actual Vita content, you can’t expect devs to allow remote play for all their games.

  • SONY PLEASE PUT LOGITECH G35 COMPATIBILTY, for game’s audio through USB, pls pls pls!!!
    THAT WOULD BE NICE!!!!!

  • @101 you can already do this. try figuring something out on your own… or read 99.

  • @76 will never happen, Sony can’t just do things like that without developers’ permission. If they did do that, the Vita would be unlikely to see many more games.

  • More details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

People yuno read the stuff right?

  • @people complaining because they don’t like the XMB… You need help. The XMB is by far the best UI on any console, or any system controllable via a typical game controller.

It requires many fewer button presses to get to your content than, say, the 360 Dashboard. I’ve counted the number of button presses to do simple actions on the PS3 vs. 360, and MS should be ashamed at how terrible their UI developers are, failing to Sony, who developed their OS for the PS3 from scratch, whereas the 360’s OS and UI elements already existed and just needed to be ported… to a system based on a CPU architecture it had already been ported to.

The XMB is designed around accessing your content, whereas the 360 Dash is designed to essentially be hundreds of advertisements, very much to the detriment of accessing your existing content.

Also, learn to use the XMB! Half you kids don’t even seem to realize that you can organize your content very easily. There are several posts EVERY DAY explaining how. Stop whining like the overly entitled brats you are and do some reading.

  • I’d love to see some deeper Vita integration, like the ability to see trophies and the ability to put my Vita games in a folder on the XMB. Also the ability to sort content in XMB folders by alphabetical order.

  • @everyone complaining about lack of searching in your download list. THIS is a very valid complaint. This is something a single developer could implement fairly easily.

There is an easy workaround for the lack of sort feature that works for nearly everything. This is also what Sony used to tell people to do. Simply browse/search the store and find the item you’re looking for. You can download it again from there for free except in very rare circumstances, eg. welcome back items aren’t visible on the account you downloaded them with.

Sony, the only gripes I have are lack of a search in my download list, and the lack of video/screenshot previews for PSone and PS2 games.

  • “Additionally, saved data management has been improved. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.”

If this means saved games etc.: yay! It’s getting pretty insane on my box with all the saved games, and a real pain to copy them.

  • Blah, Blah, Blah, Thank Sony for the update!

  • How about not making game updates take up to 4 or more hours to download. By the time it’s downloaded I don’t even want to game anymore. With such a high tech console, it shouldn’t take but a full 5 minutes if that.

  • Hearing the hallelujah chorus with the ability to copy multiple save files AT ONCE. This will do a great deal for my old phat PS3, which shuts down every 5 minutes. Looks like I’ll be able to recover them files after all!

Now if only Sony will lift the restrictions for PS3 “cloud-only” saves …

  • Great! My Stereo blue-tooth headset has been gathering dust waiting for this fix.

  • @116 it’s probably your connection it doesn’t take me 4 hours to download a game update. I have never had a game update take took me even an hour to download and install.

  • @116 updates do not take that long. there is something wrong with your connection or your PS3. my first revision system, and now my new slim, both take less than 20 mins to update.

try downloading the system update using a PC. if it downloads faster, something may be wrong with your PS3. try using a different cable, wireless adapter, etc., till you narrow down the problem. it could be your PS3’s network adapter is malfunctioning.

but first, stop blaming the wrong thing.

    FINALLY!

  • The ONLY feature I believe would or could make the PS3 better is if we could download updates/psn games and install them at the same time. I hate having to download and then install, especially since you cannot install in the background. Give us that, and PSN will be beyond perfect!

  • yes a another update! thanks sony for keeping us updated!

  • update 420 huh? If only it had been released two months ago… ;)

  • finally can select multiple saves. wanted this for awhile since I back up a lot of my older saves that are not synced with the cloud. Now please add longer comments for your psn.

  • Thank God!! This Is Whats Needed. There Was Just A 4.11 Jailbreak Released. You Have Saved The Gaming Community <3

  • Hope I Helped By Ringing 6 Times To Complain About The Jailbreak lol

  • At this point in the PS3s life, I don’t expect anymore major updates. Things like XGC and party chat have to be built into the OS (like the Vita and Xbox 360) from the very beginning.

  • AWSOME! 4.20! i need anther update! my ps3 acts weird on version 4.11 thanks i needed it ! also any word about new games 4 ps+ members? keep me updated! thanks!

  • Can you please add a feature to order the Games list into alphabetical sub folders?

  • Yay we can delete multiple things now and copy too!

I’m so happy that everyone’s happy about the headset issue. We now have an option to turn it on or off!

And yes for DVD surround sound! I have netflix but I like watching anime on my blu-ray as well. So I get surround sound on that too! Yesss! Very happy about this update which (for once) is actually useful!

  • nice improvements, but (not to sound needy) but wheres the ps3 gameplay stream on the vita. Everything for the vita so far has been nice though

  • I love you Sony but please, how about a major update? I loathe XMB!

  • Another day another minor update. 10 year plan my ass. Seemed like all development stopped at 3-4 years.

  • lol u guys…

Nice Update keep them coming…Can’t wait VITA coming soon…

    SONY FOR LIFE…VIVA LA PLAYSTATION

  • I like the timing control for auto off feature and the ability to copy/delete multiple saves. thanks for the continued support SONY :)

  • @ VKTH777, There not going to be a XMB change because they are focusing working on the PS4 OS & hardware. also the PS3 has 256mb of ram & knowing Sony, they don’t have the time to make a new update for the XMB, they going to fix bugs & working hard on Vita & PS4.

  • “A video preview for every game, including PS1 and 2 games. Showing GAMEPLAY”

    Thats a stupid idea.

“Could we get the ability to add tags to games? ”

    We have that

“also it may be a stretch but could we put our games into our own folders and name them, or is that too much?”

It already has that! There’s even a popup telling you to press triangle. RTFM

“There’s only one thing I’ve really wanted as far as interface updates go: user-defined [meta tag] sorting for games, pictures, etc. ”

    Again, it already has that.

“76 will never happen, Sony can’t just do things like that without developers’ permission. If they did do that, the Vita would be unlikely to see many more games.”

Thats a poor excuse. Yes they can do it. They added other things without devs permission, its not up to them. Nor would it stop vita from getting games

“I love you Sony but please, how about a major update? I loathe XMB!”

    Please read post 111

  • Thank you for fixing the copy/delete save system. I’ve been begging for this for years (seriously, check the share blog) WHY WONT THIS POST DAMNIT! Ive had to repost it 5 times now

My PS3 recently failed again, and I brought it back temporarily using a heat gun to get the data off.
I’d love if you’d let me get me 200+ GB of PSN games off it, cause it would literally take me months using my whole monthly quota to redownload them. And if I send the PS3 in, you’ll wipe it again.

I would suggest a new backup method.
The PS3 copies all it’s data to the USB drive as it does now, but deletes the data off it’s own drive when it’s done. The backup is given a single use key, and registered online.
Any PS3 that needs to restore the data, needs to be online to do it.
Upon restoring the backup, it registers that key as used/deletes it from PSN, which prohibits anyone from distributing ghost images of the drive.

  • I keep trying to post something but the site refuses, even though it let me post 138

  • When are we going to get remote-play for vita, trophies for vita, and all the other stuff ps3 could do with vita?

  • I would like to suggest a new backup method.

  • Thx for the new update, my ps3 is now updating :P
