PS3 System Software Update (v4.20)

Tomorrow we will be releasing a new system software update (v4.20) for PlayStation 3 which will include a few minor updates in order to strengthen functionality and improve your overall experience.

As mentioned in our previous blog post, system software update (v4.10) added a feature that enabled you to hear your own voice through the Wireless Stereo Headset when playing multiplayer modes. This type of audio feedback is known as “sidetone.” Based on your comments, system software update (v4.20) will improve sidetone audio performance by giving you the option to select one out of five levels for microphone audio, or turn the feature off completely. For those of you who use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality, giving you a superior audio experience.

This update will also allow you to set the amount of time that the system will wait before turning itself off automatically for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features].

Additionally, saved data management has been improved. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.

More details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

  • is this update mostly for those 7.1 channel stereo headphones that sony manufactures? i hope this isn’t to entice more people to buy them… if you want an educated consumer to purchase them… try making them so they’re not as fragile as eggs like a competitor’s console is… i’d love to get them… but not gonna buy something that breaks too easy (according to consumer reviews on both gamestop.com and newegg.com) just to have to go buy another set… i have an old 80 GB (model number CECHL01) converted to 500GB… never ever had a hardware issue with it… the competitor’s console… the DVD drive made a grinding noise and wouldn’t work in just 3 weeks after purchase… sure they fixed it… but that meant 2 weeks w/o that system… then i got the good ol system failure light sequence (similar to PS3’s YLOD) like 3 times… the competitor fixed the console 2x for that… but the 3rd time they expected me to pay for it… so i bought a PS3 instead… morale of the story… don’t get any ideas from the competitor… and it sounds like this headset was manufactured like their console…

  • what about cross game chat?????? for those of you wanting to hear someone ask for it ;)

  • oh yeah we want ps2 compatibility

  • @ phade2blaq:

are you referring to the freezing going on in home? that’s more like sony doesn’t know how to catch these people freeze-glitching… and they expect the customers to do their work and catch these people for them… there is a foolproof way to stop it… but it comes at a cost…. restrict wardrobe access to private spaces and clubhouses… but it does make sense and good luck getting home developers to follow common sense…

  • I cant seem to find it on the website to download it. Please add it soon since my wireless sucks at downloading. thanks!

  • @ DaveRacer67

its never going to happen, that cross game chat and ps2 comp. Sony has stated some time ago that its not possible so please stop asking for it.

  • x game chat

  • The biggest feature i would like to see is the ability to access music on the HDD regardless of whatever game is running… that would rawk

  • im dloading now

  • oops… forgot… i’d also like to be able to sort the downloaded games i purchased on PSN by alphabetical order… like wh can’t we do that already? would make searching for a particular title much easier… and it wouldn’t be hard at all to implement

  • PS2 compatibility? simply go buy a PS2… sony stopped making the PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 titles because they wanted to make more money selling PS2s… only titles i’d be interested on PS2 are FFX and FFXII

  • it has x game chat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • just kidding

  • To those wondering why the PlayStation 3 updates are so insignificant at this moment… It’s a direct correlation to resources going to the PlayStation 4. Otherwise, it’s just negligence on a platform that I consider to be the best platform of the past 4-5 years (and yes I know the PlayStation 3 was released well before that [purchased my console on launch day in 2006]). If there is any critical comments I can provide to my beloved Sony, is to partner with Google to get chrome on the next PlayStation [4]. The current browser on the PlayStation 3 was one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a device of this caliber ever. Otherwise make some really significant hardware with lots of system memory. It will be a tough pill to swallow in the beginning stages of the next generation of consoles but it will pay off when the experiences on the PlayStation will be far superior to anything “gamers” can get anywhere else, and give the console the ability to evolve with changes in technology and experiences we will certainly encounter. I’m rooting for the future of PlayStation, and I hope Sony approaches the console as intelligently, creatively, and innovatively as possible.

  • @thetrainjob I don’t see why you are saying I am underestimating the issues with remote play. I realize lag is the problem and that’s why I said we may have to wait until PS4. Again, I’ll be disappointed if the PS4 isn’t able to process games and send them to the Vita seamlessly.
I also already know that it’s up to the developers to go back and implement remote-play for their own titles via a patch. For that reason I doubt that this will happen with many old games at all, but there’s no reason Sony can’t encourage them to do it for their future games, and there’s no excuse for Sony not to do it with their own games, especially if there isn’t going to be a Vita version, and especially when the PS4 comes out.
There are plenty of games that will remain exclusive to the PS3, and those PSN games are the ones that have absolutely no reason not to be remote playable from a business standpoint, it will only help sell the game. If the developers also plan on making a Vita version, obviously they would rather not make the PS3 version remote playable, which is lame for us, but understandable for business.

  • Yet another update that gives me NOTHING of interest. And congrats Sony, its starting to look like youre going to be last company to get HBO GO on their devices, way to keep the PS3 the media staple of our living rooms.

  • can’t wait for thm pulse headphones…… i hv the ones tht are out right now but i need the new ones toooooooooooooooooooo

  • you should be aloud to play music on all games not just games like rockband and also bring that cross play thing that other people are talking about with the ps3

  • WOW, its 8:35pm Arizona time(yes, it has its own time zone) and we have our update already .
    Sweet

  • I want to have the option to appear offline! That would be a bad-ass update!

  • And have a better wireless headset communications with friends during multiplayer coop games!

  • Looks like the box team is out tonight.

  • Nice updates for that headset, I always found the microphone to be kind of low at times. Now I can change the level! :D

  • Virtual surround for movies hell yeah!

  • finally the ability to multiple copy or delete.

it was a cumbersome copying and backing up PS2/PS1 saves on the USB.

also where the hell is the ability to arrange games in folders in alphabetically order.

other than categories, my games are a mess. i want them in order SONY!!!!

still no de-sync function in wireless controllers so that in tournaments when someone accidentally push the home button it won’t interrupt the last PS3 that it was used

want FLAC and MKV support please!!!!!

other than that, yay updating time :D

  • How do you use the sidetone setting?

  • THANK YOU for an update that seems to have broken my copy of Lego Star Wars Complete Saga. All of a sudden the game wont boot and tells me to re insert bluray disc, guess what the disc never came out.

  • Somebody needs to fix this crap!

  • I just tried downloading the update and I am having trouble. Is anyone else? It just times out and I cant find it online to copy via mass storage. Can someone help? Thanks.

  • xSkywalkerx2012x

Please Sony give us more for our dusty ps vita’s

  • noone knows for sure what’s going on with codename orbis… but i’m hesitant on buying a PS4 simply due to the fact that a competitor runs a more solid gaming network than PSN… but has hardware durability issues with this generation… hopefully they resolve that next generation… or sony resolves their network issues… i’m waiting to see what the competitor’s offer next gen before deciding to stay with sony… in other words sony… STEP UP YO GAME… you have the best hardware… but you need a better gaming network…

Be nice if we could choose and apply ANY browser! Not just use the pre-installed one everyone complains about, plus needs support for Adobe AIR, Full QuickTime, Flash, HTML5. Pretty much ALL of the supported plug-ins required to view content on PC’s, tablets, and smartphones are available. Opera, Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla being “open-sourced” as it is, could fit nicely. It has a sync function that lets you access web tabs you would have on your phone or PC/Laptop. Same goes for the web browser on Vita.

  • i Don’t want lost my information the my games but SONY CONFERENCE 2012 is awesome

    NEVER STOP PLAYING

  • Wow awesome!!! I used the Wireless Stereo Headset quite a lot so.. This is awesome! Thank you PS for making costummers happy! :D

  • Ready

  • Thanks playstation, I am really looking forward to getting those wireless stereo headsets too!

  • Come on guys, give it up. The XMB isn’t going anywhere. Its the one thing, along with X-Game Chat, you’re never gonna see coming from Sony on the PlayStation 3. Look at the New Xbox Experience. ITS A TOTAL MESS! It takes forever to navigate anywhere because its menu, after menu, after menu. The XMB keeps it TOTALLY SIMPLE! Complexity and all that garbage is what PlayStation Home is there for. To give you that similar experience without interfering with the simplicity of just jumping into the game. The PS3 isn’t capable of X-Game Chat. Sony have already stated that. That’s why the PS Vita has additional memory to accommodate that. Orbis will have that functionality but for now, WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT SIMPLICITY!? Is that not why tech nerds favor Mac over PC, because PC takes forever to accomplish the same task Mac can do in three or less steps? Ya’ll are looking at this totally wrong. PS3 is about gaming. Microsoft and Xbox 360 are about casual experiences much like the Wii and Wii U.

  • Core gamers just want to get in and get going. Sony could care less what I say, if fact, they don’t. I’m just one more person among millions. Whoopity-do, but I think they’ve got it perfect. Simplist is best, in the best way I can describe it.

By-the-way, just a note. Why are you all talking about v1.70 for the PlayStation Vita, when the topic is the PS3 Update. Its the PS3 Lempell is updating at this point. In time, and strategically planned, the Vita will get its 1.7 update with YouTube and all that you greedy beasts. You don’t think Sony has a plan drawn out with he best times to release things? All in good time. Be patient.

  • Ah, what the heck. Why not. Ya know, Jack Tretton at E3 mentioned that PlayStation has the most passionate fans of any brand, that Microsoft tried to pull the same thing later with Don Mattrick as Microsoft usually does stealing everyone elses lines. “Thank you all our fans.” Why didn’t he do that at Microsoft’s Press Conference instead of copying Sony? And then everyone calls Microsoft the innovators?

Besides the point. So, PlayStation has the most passionate fans, no doubt, but they also have the greediest and most unthankful fans too. They just keep giving and giving and giving and its just never enough. Why give more to those that are just gonna burn ya at the stake unsatisfied with what they have at the moment. Ah, to work with Sony. I just don’t want to go through mass scrutiny by a panel only to find I lost out because someone else got lucky playing Killzone 3 or Uncharted. Cut em some slack people. They’re doing what they can.

  • I see no option(s) for sidetone in FW4.20. Thanks Sony..

  • WHEN ARE WE GOIN TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO ARE MUSIC AND PLAY GAMES IS WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW!!!! BUT THANK YOU SONY =]

  • When they going to update ad hoc party and make things bigger in there…. Come on do a real update

  • Does the patch add Headset Surround for Netflix? also you guys should have added a delete multiple game data too. good update though finally no more echo in offline games.

  • First off, thanks for the update all you hard working peoples! Could have been later at night so my auto-update could of got it, but I don’t want to complain.

I have had the official headphones since they came out and they still work perfectly and are used a lot! I never cared about the ability to hear yourself through the mic but after you added it I thought it was nice because I could now hear the phone/other sounds. Although it did defeat the purpose of them being noise canceling, but I eventually got used it. Kind of sad how you added the feature due to the large requests for it and then after you add it everyone complains about it. Just us typical Americans, never happy with what we have always wanting more.

Anyways now that you added the settings to disable the hear yourself through the mic feature (which actually took some hunting for me to find) everyone can be happy! or not. Also thanks for adding 7.1 for movies, because that was a real downer for me when I first bought the headphones, but now that’s fixed so thank you!

  • The ability to select multiple saved games is also a plus but another thing I found you changed was the viewing of messages in the message box. For example if you send a message without a subject then the recipient can read it without opening it! Very time saving feature but due to my instincts of opening mail it may take some time to get used to it.

The only thing that I really have trouble with on the PS3 is scrolling through my massive download list. Maybe if we could sort it by themes/avatars/games at least, or a better sorting option? Anyway thanks for this update guys and don’t rush to get more out, just take your time like you always do so that it’s bug free.

P.S. the 7.1 for the headphones is really accurate except for close quarters in BF3 where you have gun shots/footsteps above and below. I know DICE could fix it with a sound barrier type wall for the floors but maybe in the future we will have 9.1 surround sound with speakers above and below or something.

  • Need help! How do you disable the sidenote!?

  • Having issues with staying on the installation screen at 99 percent for quite some time anyone else experience that?

  • Real Update PLS!!!! when i mean real… well.. things that affects everyone like

A sound for messages (ability to turn it off if ppl dont like it)

PS2 BC!!! u are selling ps2 games on the PSN which means ps3 already have the emulator program installed! let us play our Physical copies on the ps3 goddamit!

PS Home Avatars Next to our name! (dont u think thats the best way to get ppl into PS Home since everyone will want to look awesome?)

FireFox Mozilla browser instead of the crappy one. (i know they updated the browser but it feels almost the same and still cannot run most of the sites properly! >:(

I love sony but im not blind. damn we haven’t had a decent update since trophies and in game xmb! :(
