Tomorrow we will be releasing a new system software update (v4.20) for PlayStation 3 which will include a few minor updates in order to strengthen functionality and improve your overall experience.
As mentioned in our previous blog post, system software update (v4.10) added a feature that enabled you to hear your own voice through the Wireless Stereo Headset when playing multiplayer modes. This type of audio feedback is known as “sidetone.” Based on your comments, system software update (v4.20) will improve sidetone audio performance by giving you the option to select one out of five levels for microphone audio, or turn the feature off completely. For those of you who use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality, giving you a superior audio experience.
This update will also allow you to set the amount of time that the system will wait before turning itself off automatically for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features].
Additionally, saved data management has been improved. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.
More details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

sony im not satisfied with all this…… As a company maybe you dont care what your customers want but i bought my psp vita here in my country for 489 dollars this is for the bundle pack of wifi vita + mod nation. Before get it i was told that you will get youtube with the vita…… What did i get????? Until today not too much, here in my country El Salvador is hard to afford a Ps vita, but i didnt care to get it cause i truste in SONY…… But anyways i just hope to get what you promised someday……
make it so we can paly PS2 games on it please, i have a lot of ps2 games that i would rather play on a ps3 than on my old ps2

I would like to see an option “USB Sound Output” you know, to hear the game through my Steelseries USB soundcard, not just my own voice.
I still waiting the option to change my PSN ID NAME … i really hate my current ID.

Oh thank you! This is going to be so much better for when I just want to back up saves instead of multiple buttons for each and every stupid little save (you say first world problems, I say it makes it take an hour of sitting there and basically doing nothing when it should take 2min). Now about those copy protected saves…..
We’re slowly getting better, features like this should have been in there years ago.

I am getting served the wrong update. It says it has found the latest update, 4.20 but then shows me the user agreement for version 1.4, december 10, 2009.
Anyone else have this problem?
@Azam007uk: That’s probably because the PS Store hasn’t actually updated yet, and the System Update isn’t available. It says there will be more details once the Update goes live, and since there aren’t “more details”, it isn’t live yet. You’re gonna have to wait a MINIMUM of 11 hours before it might be available. Probably more like 16-18 hours. And if you’re in the UK as your name would imply, you’re also likely looking at it not being available until your normal Wednesday update, and that’s only if your own blog has even said you’re getting it this week (if you are indeed in the UK).

While I am glad there is work for improvement still going on, I just don’t get it:
what’s the use of selecting multiple save datas? I need “copy all” and “copy changed”, that’s it.
Or even better:
A check box for “automatically save changed save datas to usb device with /ps3 subdirectory if attached”.

I assume the 2009 date is from the last change of the user agreement.

After system update and auto reboot, my ps3 went blank and dead.
Some help in this regard would be much appreciated as I’ve got no idea as to why this has happened and what step I should take in order to fix this.

Turn that damn thing to OFF and you will be ready to enjoy your headset once again, the way it should be.
why don’t u update the friggin browser to newest available and maybe flash player too instead of being a couple friggin years behind cmon

I dont know maybe this is a dumb question but its says it is the update 4.20 but when i go to the psn web for download it via pc it says it is the update 4.11. Besides i being read some post that this update corrupt some ps3. Can someone please solve this doubt? Thanks
Thanks for the multiple items delete… It was a pain to delete 50 saved game one by one… And maybe I will consider buying a headphone now they got virtual surround sound functionality…
Improvements are great no matter if they involve me or not.
But why on earth does Sony always pick Tuesday to update the firmware? So now I can’t enjoy the PS Store if I don’t update the firmware. If I update the firmware there is a chance to have issues, I usually wait a few days to let the issues show themselves, now I have to wait to buy anything from the store until way late in the week possibly missing out on something if I don’t watch the “clock”.
Why not update the firmware on Thursday????????

OH THANK YOU for an update that seems to have broken my copy of Lego Star Wars Complete Saga. All of a sudden the game wont boot and tells me to re insert bluray disc, guess what the disc never came out.
i totally wish we get an update that lets us trim down our trophy list. I mean there are games on mine that I have sold, lost or gave away. I dont need 1% done for that trash game or 5% done in flow. I dont really play games for the trophies, I play em cause they are fun. please implement this in a future update and yes please fix the archaic browser and a new xmb would be a nice thing too. 420 for the win.

@223- I did the same thing. Downloaded to thumb drive, plugged it in to my PS3 but it recognized the update as being 4.11. So I didn’t update it.

@+ xx-TC1-xx, Just let it finish out. Don’t turn it off. I have read from a few people that they were stuck at 99% for a while and left it alone and their system shut down and rebooted itself when it was finished with the new update. Patience young Grasshopper :)

Will anyone else confirm the following.
1. I have noticed now that when clicking on profile it doesn’t say performing the sync operation please wait. Also with friends the same thing. Also when clicking on trophy information I still have not seen that message after opening and closing it multiple times.
2. Also it seems that the message box is somewhat different in the way messages are received and sent.

Another joke (in a long line of jokes) of a firmware update.
At the very least you could have added a YouTube app like the Vita got so we don’t have to use the garbage web browser.
SInce updating to firmware 4.20, my Wireless Stereo Headset turned off twice automatically while in use. Had to turn it back on each time.
The Sony Tech Team should have this checked at.
So you add a “copy multiple” option but don’t enable it where it would be most useful which is for PSP/Mini save data. That would make transfering save data back and forth between my Vita and PSP Go much easier (I like to use my PSP Go to play PSP games on my TV which the Vita can’t do).
I want sony to make ps2 games compatible with the ps3 like the 60g version but for all ps3s
How about in-game custom music or Mkv Video compatibility…… OR ESPN 360 PLEASE!!

You forced me to update.
My Ps3 was working fine when I first turned it on. I could play a game no problem, except no sign-in or online multi-player functions (yet it showed me latest news that had to have been obtained from online), because YOU enforce this like the Corporate Piece of Company you are. Which by the way, I can somewhat understand why you force the updates, just not the holding features hostage bit. Seems as if you’ve become Feature Terrorist in your fear of Pirates and hackers, to the point of your Homeland Security just BROKE a piece of its own territory. My PS3 unit.
