RPG Rainbow Moon Rises on PSN July 10th

Rainbow Moon is our upcoming role-playing game for PS3. It’s been nearly two years since we started working on Rainbow Moon, so we can hardly believe that the game releases on PSN in just over two weeks — it’ll hit PlayStation Store on July 10th for $14.99. If you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you’ll enjoy a 20% discount, paying just $11.99, for the first two weeks after launch.

The last time we spoke, I explained Rainbow Moon‘s battle system. This time, I’d like to give you some insight into the game’s character development system. Many gamers think that character development is just about battling and leveling up. While that’s partly true in Rainbow Moon, there’s a lot more that can make or break a game.

Aside from RPG standards like experience points and gaining levels, in Rainbow Moon you can earn a resource called “Rainbow Pearls.” You can exchanged these for improved character attributes or increased health and magic limits. This system gives you a certain freedom in how you’d like to develop your characters. A higher “speed” attribute, for example, will grant you a turn order advantage during battles, while an increased “luck” attribute increases the chance for critical hits.

You can also strengthen your characters by equipping them with different kind of weapons, armor, amulets, rings, and purchasing active and passive skills, as well as by taking advantage of the game’s crafting system. We’ll chat more about that another time!

Be sure to check out the following gameplay video, which is part of our development diary video series. It’s a great recap about Rainbow Moon’s battle system.

  • Thanks for developing a game in a genre that isn’t represented that often on PSN. Helps to fill the gaping void.

Will definitely pick this up, and I’m in full support of a Vita version as well. ;3

  • I stopped the video many times just to observe how the menus worked, and I’m glad to see it has pretty simple, yet informative interface. Huge and deep content are great but only if the players can easily assimilate with it. You guys seens to have nailed it!

    Now, just some questions.

1-) Skills seens to have a level system… Is that correct? How does it work?

2-) Can the Bestiary be acessed in battles? Its a huge difference between having to memorize enemies stats and having at your disposal, anytime.

3-) Any type of multiplayer content? Its 3 party based so…

    The game look great!
    Looking foward to july 10th!

  • oh, just another question

4-) How is the difficulty of the game? I see a lot of talk about it but I didn’t quite get it. Strategy game must have… well, strategy involved and not rely to much on gear and stats. Re-questioning: Can someone at a lower level win battles some higher players couldn’t?

      Hi SirMilagres,

1: Skill do have a level yes. Just simply use the skill over and over and the level will increase. Skills with a higher level are more effective, that means a cure spell will restore more HP and a damage skill will cause more damage.

2: Unfortunately not, only outside of battle.

3: Rainbow Moon is a single player game, but you can upload your savegame to our server and can compare your stats online with other player.

4: There are minimum stats required for serveral monsters and bosses because monsters on Rainbow Moon does not level up with the player. But you’re right, the key to win a decent fight is always the strategy, not just the strength of the party. That being said; there are some optional bosses which are so strong that they never could be killed just by bare power.

Just an addition to the bestiary:
Although you have no access to the bestiary during a battle, you can use a x-ray spell which offers an insight to the most important monster attributes too, depending on the skill level.

  • BlackoutBasement

Incredible I can’t wait to start playing this!

  • Holy crap it’s like Disgaea crossed with FF tactics and not made by a japanese company!!
…that being said I wonder how it’ll match up to my 1000 hours of Disgaea gameplay (and counting)

  • Thanks for the reply Marcus,

I wasn’t thinking of extended demo or free2play. A taste of world exploring and combat mechanics are usually all that’s needed. For example, Reckoning did a good job of getting the demo out before the game release. Even though it was never offered in the PS store as a full game (hindsight now indicates they should have used every avenue possible to sell the game). But I determined I liked it before I even was aware of the release date. Probably a bad example since the studio is now dead, but it was a good idea to get the game out in front of everyone before it was released.

  • So, PS+ discount for a couple weeks, but no demo. However, quite possibly a demo a few weeks AFTER the PS+ discount expires? Maybe I’m just being greedy, and I know we with PS+ have gotten a lot of free stuff, but I feel like we’re kind of getting the shaft here.

  • Sorry, posted that before I read the reply to DelMurice.

I agree with DelMurice. A demo with a level cap (similar to Diablo) would give a sufficient taste of what’s to come. Just enough to hook people in, then they hit that cap, and have to buy the game to advance.

  • I’m glad to see this coming out finally, the PS3’s library of RPG games is a shadow of what the PS2 offered at this time in its life cycle.

I’m sad though that you’re falling for the PS+ Discount =/

While that makes some PS+ members bite, it also means some non plus members will pass it up. Some don’t like the elitest club mentality where you have to pay an entrance fee for special treatment. Myself, I see you offering a day one discount and know that means you’ll consider a regular sale in the future so I might as well wait for that.

  • This is killing me I just baught a Vita I owned a psp and have been an xbox owner since the first never owned a ps2 or ps3 even though Uncharted has tempted me over and over again. Anyway WHY!!!?? isn’t every single PSN game for the ps3 also on the Vita? wouldn’t that have been like the number one thing they try to do when desigining the vita would be capable of doing? I want so many PSN game but have no access to any of them. I want Princess de Gordo now! and seeing Rainbow Moon now this. Make it happen sony the PSN store is has far better games than the XBLA and any one that says otherwise is just a fool.

  • Only just actually found out about this game. Looks good, definitely getting it. How long will it be though? Longer than Bastion? That was great but a tad short.

    Also, 313!!!!

  • Would love to play this and all the games Figboy mentioned.

  • Darn no edit button…would love to play these games on my Vita ;)

  • Im really looking for to this and I want to get it on drop day…but without a demo I’m going to have to some what rely on reviewers to help form my opinion. Tho I’ll probably still get it anyway as long as it isn’t a bomb critically.

  • Rainbow moon looks cool might actually buy it. Do you have an eta for the almighty legasista though. i have looked up all the info i could find and really found nothing about it. I’m just wondering is it still coming out next month as planned or will it be delayed a bit.

  • I started to get super excited about this game, and then read that it was ps only. I no longer have a ps and purely use my vita..so until the vita version comes out, I’m out of luck. I had to choose between ps and vita and I went with the vita. I hope hope hope hope hope this game will be made available with a vita version SOON.
