Dust 514
Closed Beta Access and 50% off Mercenary Pack Add-On
Remember that Beta I talked about earlier? I know, it was a bit in the making but we’re happy to welcome our friends from the Dust 514 team into Plus with exclusive access for the closed beta. Dust 514 is the free to play first person shooter that may change the face of how we battle online in games. Help test the first live direct connection to the extremely popular EVE Online MMO as players on the main server in DUST 514 and EVE Online can chat in real time and send in-game mail between games. It’s a first in gaming, it’s free to play when it releases later this fall, and exclusive access is coming to Plus members on 8/21. You’ll have until September 4th to jump in the Beta. Read more about the features available in this Beta in a post from Brandon Laurino, Executive Producer on Dust 514.
We’re also sporting a 50% discount on the Mercenary Pack DLC for Dust 514 which gives access to in-game currency to spend in game, skill boosts, and exclusive gear. Now I know what you’re thinking: this is a beta, how can I buy Add-Ons if it’s in beta? Good question! Any Add-Ons that are purchased with Dust 514 while the game is in Beta will be carried over when the game releases later this fall. So buy with confidence! There’s a ton of great Dust 514 blog posts; read up on the game and jump in the Beta.
Counter Strike: Global Offensive

It’s the return of the king. The first editions of Counter Strike back in the day paved the way for what online shooters are today. Now Valve is partnering with PlayStation to deliver this new release 20% off when it becomes available for download on 8/21. The final title of the PSN PLAY promotion, make sure you’ve picked up as many titles from PLAY as possible so you can get the most amount of PlayStation Store credit back on September 7th.

I’m not too thrilled about these new additions either, but I’m still busy playing Infamous 2, Saints Row 2, Just Cause 2, and The Walking Dead. Though I’ve only been a Plus member for a month or two, I am satisfied with the subscription so far. I’m sure that by the end of my yearly subscription, I’ll have downloaded more than $50 worth of content. However, I’m glad I bought a PS3 soon after I bought the PSVita, since there doesn’t seem to be much benefit to being a Plus member if you only have a Vita. Some free PSP games would be great, but like I said before — I’m still busy playing the free games I downloaded a month ago.
I’d also like to comment on the 20% discount on the games this month and I have to say it’s nice but not enough to convince my to buy a game. For instance I bought sound shapes because I was going to buy it any way but it was nice to get a discount. But I’m on the fence about Papo & Yo and know that it will probably be 50% off in a few months so I likely won’t get it right away. I think if the discount was enough to bring it down from $14.99 to under $10 (33.3% or 35% for a nice round number) I would be convinced to buy it so long as the reviews turned out good.
(and yes I know that I would get $3 back with the sale effectively making it a 40% discount)
Just casting my vote in favor of the current (post-E3) Plus: 3 PSN titles, with an occasional full retail title, over the old model of 1 PSN title, 1 PSone, and 1 mini.
I own a current generation console because I want to play current generation games.
I had been monitoring the PS Plus offerings since it’s inception, but it wasn’t until the June announcement that it was finally time to sub for a full year, even though all the titles I really wanted that were in the IGC were ones I already owned (LBP2, R&C All4One, Infamous2, and Lara Croft).
So far there has been a nice mix of games that I had my eye on or really wanted, games I only tried because they were free (and found I really enjoyed them), and games that I’ll pass on because I have other gaming priorities… and to quote Meatloaf: “Two out of three ain’t bad.” ;)
I have only had my PS3 for a few years now and have a small collection(20 or so) of games so I’m really enjoying the free PSN+ games. It gives me a chance to explore parts of their game catalog I never would have experienced without it! In regards to many of the games not being full retail titles, I actually think some of the PSN games are as fun as full blown retail games and thats what matters to me.
@ Freshprincepbg
Stop being a cry-baby and grow up already. With a screen name like that, it just screams spoiled lil brat. PS + offerings might not meet your standards, as they seem pretty low to begin with, but other people seem to have no problem and like it. Can’t please everybody. Someone’s always gonna @itch!
This comment is grounds for being banned from the Blog. Stay away from personal insults and stick to the discussion please. It’s ok if it’s a general “wow lot of complainers in here” and is general, but when you call out a person’s name, it’s a direct insult and I just can’t have that here. We’re all gamers, let’s respect one another.
