You might have watched YouTube on PS3 before, but get ready for a whole new world of video and features. We have a completely new experience, designed for the big screen and optimized for the PS3. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Search: Finding the videos you want is easier than ever, with search suggestions and instant video results while you type.
- Your subscribed channels: Sign in to find the latest videos from your YouTube subscriptions, which now also includes official music videos.
- Your phone as a remote: With a quick pairing process, you can control YouTube on PS3 with a smartphone. Find a video on your phone and with a button it’ll play on the big screen. While the video is playing you can control it from the phone, or keep browsing YouTube for the next one.
With today’s Store publish, you’ll find the new app in the PlayStation Store under My Channels. We’ll keep improving the PS3 experience and plan to bring the app to more countries in coming months.
Yes this app has a few flaws,
– No HD
– Only for America
– Lag
But I haven’t experienced any of these except only for America because, I live in Canada. I was hoping for the app to come out at least North America for now, but looks like Canada is left out. D:
+ People have the right to complain but the App is brand new and just came out a few days ago. It’s not like they’re not going to update it again. By the time all problems are solved everyone will turn out liking it. Well, at least majority of people. ^_^
I’ll be honest this is a great addition to the PS3, but I’m slightly disappointed in the functionality. Can’t access channels and watch entire playlists from there, and the interface is a little sluggish. Of course that’ll improve with time, and I hope they add in an actual channel interface at some point. Other than that, well done Sony peoples!
The app needs serious rework. I can’t get it to play videos without locking up.

I can’t get to my youtube channel, videos refuse to play at all, trying to type is cumbersome and annoying, 3 beep reset nearly every time I try to exit the app, and I have to use my 3ds (no smart phone and a dead computer) Tto log in EVERY SINGLE TIME THE APP IS ACCESSED! To top it all of i’m forced to use it. I envy Cannada for not having to use this app yet.

I really do not like this new youtube app. It’s great that Sony keeps trying new things and i commend them on that. However i do not like the fact that i connot still go to the youtube standard version in the browser, it keeps asking me to download the app. It would be nice if the Playstation community were left with a choice as to how they want to view their videos on youtube. It just seems a bit capitalistic to offer only one option with no choice. Please sony fix this issue and let me decide how i view my videos there is no reason we can’t have both.
You guys need to fix the app because the videos lag every 5 seconds, it’s not my internet because on the browser before i could watch videos with no problems. I never used youtube XL but i used the regular version on my PS3 but i just found out i’m FORCED to you use this app, i’m sure you guys will fix the app but i hope you guys can allow people to use the regular youtube on the PS3 Internet browser
To be brutally honest…This Youtube App Sucks. Please at least make the attempt to make it functional. OR let us choose to go back to the old one. You dropped the ball on this one sony. Thank You

Sounds great, I use Youtube alot so it’ll be very useful.
New app or not, the entire interface is just flat out bad, no -actual- options or settings, the lists take far too long to navigate and show very little information, the search options are VERY restricting. The entire things feels like a husk of what YouTube really is, no video comments, no annotation support, an awful video interface, and it’s just -far- less convenient than the browser version of YouTube. Literally the only advantage the app version has over the browser is better video quality.
However, none of this would bother me in the slightest if we were actually given a choice, instead of youtube.com being turned into an advertisement. I don’t know what the reasoning behind this is, but whatever it is, it’s not worth it. This idea was ruined the second you restricted our options.
When I saw the Youtube app for the PS3, I was pretty excited. The thought of watching vids from my tv in good quality excited me. Downloading it was a breeze, it told me to activate my account and link it with my PS3, so I follow the steps and allow my yt account to link with my system.
Problem is…I still can’t sign in, it keeps telling me to activate my account and gives these passwords for me to use. Is there any way around that?
I admit this app is very disappointing compared to the normal internet search version of youtube and its very annoying when your being reminded to “Check out our new free app on the playstation store!” and this is especially annoying when your trying to get onto the youtube on internet search but the homepage is blocked by the ad -_-
This app sucks. We all don’t have smart phones ya know. and my computer broke reccently so I have to use my PS3’s browser, which isnt bad. I was fine using the internet browser and I could manage my videos and messages while having other sites open in other tabs… Now I can’t even access it through the browser.
Long story short is there a way to get rid of that ad thing when you visit youtube using the internet browser????
So.. whe are you all going to add the update where we can favorite a video and possibly share it. I love this app instead of going through th browser, it became a little clunky at times to use. But i really do wish to hav an add to favs option somewhere in the video. I see that you have the “report video” option, lol nice add on, jking. Love the new app, keep it coming ony
This youtube app is a piece of garbage. Always hangs. Had difficult time using this.. and also previous one disabled.. my kid is not able to watch nursery rhymes which are even 5 minutes each.. sometimes doesnt start at all.. if starts.. sucks.. update this guys or simply remove and revert to previous till then.. but accept that this is a crap!!
This app is another huge failure from Sony concerning the PS3. I have yet to be able to play a single YT vid without it causing my PS3 to freeze. Adding to the problem, I can no longer access youtube from the PS3 browser, and instead get a message telling me to download this garbage app. Fix this immediately, Sony!

I don’t like the new youtube app, since it came out I haven’t been able to log into youtube or watch any videos. Before the app was released I could browse youtube, watch videos and all the good stuff everyone else is able to do.
i just downloaded the app and i must say it really sucks i tried to watch a music video and it played fine for a few seconds and then it started to lag. the song sounded like it was playing in slow motion it just sucks

You will have to wait and be patient for them to get all the complaints and issues worked out so they can get it working. In conclusion, THIS APP DOES NOT WORK. I haven’t had a problem with it playing videos or anything, but no HD just murders it for me. My computer screen has better quality. And I have a media streaming box for the television downstairs that plays HD YouTube videos so I’d pick that over this. Once HD gets up, I’ll be pretty content.
I was using the web version until I saw a tweet from a fellow gamer. Yesterday I installed the new app and it looks awesome and the video quality is effing great.

I decided to give this a try. I was using the PS3 browser and saw the ad for the youtube app. So, I clicked on “install it now” and it exited the browser, and loaded the PS Store. It gave me a message saying there was “nothing to buy”.
So, I manually loaded the store and did a search for “youtube”. The only thing that came up was the app for the Vita. There is no PS3 app that I can find, and even the Sony installer from their own browser couldn’t find it.

I wish Sony could take some of their piles of money and fix the damn browser. Over the last few nights I have been watching some shows on Crackle using my PS3, and the damn browser keeps crashing to the point where the PS3 needs to be rebooted.
The PS3 has been on the market for years and years, and they STILL haven’t fixed this cruddy browser. They have literally had years to do it.
I really like everything about the PS3 except the browser. If Sony doesn’t fix it, and just leaves this crappy browser in there until the next console is released, then I don’t think I’ll bother purchasing any more Sony products since they still haven’t gotten the PS3 to fully operate 100%.

Yeah. This app could be called “kludgy” at best, Consumer hostile at worst. Forcing any kind of unnecessary, unwanted, or unasked for application on a consumer base is a quick and sure way to erode any faith that said consumer base has in a company.
I am all for offering this program, despite the fact it runs awfully, has a severely lacking (i.e. almost nonexistent.) search function, and has probably one of the worst and least intuitive control interfaces I’ve ever dealt with.
I see how this whole “upgrade” would appeal to the brain-dead twitter/facebook zombies who don’t care what it is that they are watching as long as it’s trending and is high-def and full screen. For some of us however I’d rather be able to search for AND find what it is specifically I searched for in the first place. The video quality on youtube has never been truly spectacular anyway, 1080p or otherwise.
My experience after downloading this new app was unpleasant. Once I download the app the PS3 internet browser keep redirecting me to the App Download invitation page.
This beautiful new youtube application is attractive but I found It slow and buggy. I have a 1.5Mbps internet connection and it is still slower than a 486 PC from the ’90s.
In 30 minutes of trying I saw ONE youtube clip. It either froze, timed-out or gave a ‘playback error’ message.
Any idea who to use PS3’s browser to get past the app download screen?
app is right out terrible the sound and videos is choppy the videos buffer waaayyy too much and the UI is plain garbage. Can we at least have an opinion in this? or a choice between YoutubeXL or this terrible thing you dare call an “app”
There is a way to bypass the youtube app download screen by the way
1. Can’t view playlists from channels that you subscribe to………………………………………………….FAIL
2. Can’t switch to “UPLOADS ONLY” on channels you subscribe to…………………………………….FAIL
3. Can’t use the web browser if you do not like the APP. Seriously, if your going to lock people from using the web browser then your APP better be superior.
Want to design something that is useful? Create a Microsoft EXTENDER for Windows Media Center for the PS3. No, this is NOT the same thing as connecting to the Windows Media PLAYER. It allows you to stream content from Windows Media CENTER as that is streaming content from the internet. NOT data that is stored on your pc. Had to explain it before all the “use ps3media server” fanboi’s commented when it isn’t the same thing.
This app is really disappointing. I was really looking forward to it as the quality in the PS3 browser leaves a lot to be desired, but I like to search for a lot of songs on youtube and the search feature takes way too long, it takes forever to scroll back and forth through the letters. When a video plays right, it looks great, but about half of the time it freezes my entire ps3 up at least once during the video. For just playing music videos, I would sometimes prefer the browser version, so my main gripe is that you are forcing me to use the app. Don’t restrict my options Sony, give the consumer some choice.
On the positive side the videos stream well and are of high quality. I do not have the freezing issue that everyone seems to have. Then again I have one of the older units that has two physical processors, one for ps3 games and a second for ps2 games. Not sure if that has any affect on my experience.
I still do not like the app due to reasons in post 237. I am hoping this is a beta app and they will continue to add functionality to it. With its current functionality it doesn’t work for my youtube use. It may for others.
whenever i watch a video i searched for and i wasnt subscribed to who made it the app freezes and when i quit my whole system restarts.
I am also having the problem where it keeps playing the same video. And I was extremely disappointed to learn I could no longer use the browser for youtube.

Keep up the good work sony, I haven’t tested the smart phone remote but this is kicking ass. I’m a huge Anime nerd and honestly funimation has alot of anime on netflix…….I can’t say this for every series and stuff but this app (though im sure not intended) Eliminates the need for netflix, Search for say Darker than Black on Youtube and Funimation will let you use their channel in the app. It works brilliantly yes this is at least in 720p.

I Like The App But It Needs An Upgrade. When I Watch A Video. It Slows Down Also, I Can’t Comment On The Videos Or Subscribe To Any Of The Channels. So Playstation Team Please Fix This Problem As Soon As Possible. And One More Thing, The PSN App On Facebook Is Still Not Working :(
The idea behind this is great but such a poor interaction. I have to enter a code on my computer or mobile device in order to log in to youtube on the Ps3 now? At that point, I might as well use it on one of those devices instead of bothering to go back and forth. It would make a lot more sense if you could just log in with your username and password directly on the native app. What is the hang-up?
I was able to sign in and activate my profile. But any video that I watch that is restricted 18+ requires another activation, and it just keeps coming back to the activation screen with a different password

I just bought a PS3 a few days ago. This was one of the first apps that I downloaded for it. I was not impressed at all. The text input for searching is cumbersome at best, it doesn’t let me use my wireless keyboard, the interface/layout is pretty awful. I realize this is pretty early on in the game… but please, please, please, get some user experience specialists working on this one. It has a lot of potential, but it isn’t quite there yet. Other than that, I love the system so far. :)
ATTENTION EVERYONE you can still use the browser in the browser instead of “youtube.com” type in “youtube.com/search” and you can use it untill they make an update. By the way the apostraphes are there just to seperate it from everything else
