The Drop: Week of August 20th 2012 New Releases

On PS3 this week, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive brings deep tactical matches, iconic multiplayer maps, and PlayStation Move or mouse-and-keyboard support to PSN. The war on planet Cybertron rages on in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, which takes fans through the final, darkest hours of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for control of their dying planet — buy it on Blu-ray or PSN Tuesday.

On PSN, Retro/Grade is an innovative game that fuses the white knuckle thrills and over the top visuals of a shooter with the broad appeal of a rhythm game. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater both receive the full digital treatment and arrive on PSN for PS3 and PS Vita. Enjoy this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation 3

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron — With the stakes higher and scale bigger than ever, fans will control an unprecedented assortment of Transformers characters armed with authentic transformation designed around their unique abilities, including Grimlock’s nearly indestructible T-Rex form and the legendary Combaticons forming into the colossal Bruticus. Taking the franchise’s competitive online play to all-new heights, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron pits players head-to-head in blistering Autobot vs. Decepticon matches.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

PlayStation Network

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive — Counter-Strike: Global Offensive expands upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 12 years ago. CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.).

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS3 and PS Vita, sold separately) — Once underway, players take the role of a one-man army determined to stop a deadly high-tech weapon from falling into the hands of a highly elite resistance group known as Dead Cell. Users must once again utilize their skills in stealth, weaponry, and counter-terrorism to fight off the competing powers; and as they progress through a twisting storyline, eventually destroy the gigantic war machine, Metal Gear Ray.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS3 and PS Vita, sold separately) –– In the struggle to achieve world peace and world dominance in the Cold War period, rivaling governments are secretly developing weapons technology that could threaten the future existence of life. Destined to be the first, a race ensues to become the ultimate nation. A special elite tactical soldier is summoned to penetrate deep in the heart of enemy territory and obtain Intel about “Metal Gear”, a prototype weapon with nuclear capabilities. This is your mission and you must infiltrate alone. As “Naked Snake,” you must outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries in this critical chapter of the Metal Gear saga.

Retro/Grade — Retro/Grade stars ace fighter pilot Rick Rocket who has just saved the universe. Unfortunately, the massive destruction he left in his wake has caused a temporal anomaly that reversed the flow of time. You must assume control of Rick’s spacecraft and fight through the epic space battle … in reverse.

Michael Jackson: The Experience — He is the legendary King of Pop! Featuring an immersive and interactive experience for the Playstation Move that enables players to step into the shoes of Michael Jackson himself and re-live his most iconic moments through their own performance. The unparalleled tracklist features many of MJ’s biggest hits including Billie Jean, Beat It, Smooth Criminal and many more. There are an array of his awe-inspiring dance moves for players to learn and emulate within the game. Additionally, fans can sing along and test their vocal skills while immersed in the performance.

Deep Black — The unique underwater setting of Deep Black combines action-packed battles with an immersive story line that blends science-fiction, espionage and bio-terror. Realistic underwater physics add intensity to this third-person action thriller.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure HD — Based on the popular comic book series, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD is an arcade fighter that lets you duke it out with your favorite characters from the comics. JoJo must travel to Egypt to find a cure for his sick mother. Each fighting character has his or her own Stand, a guardian spirit that aids in the battle. Unlike mortal humans though, Stands can reanimate quickly after defeat, so use this to your advantage as you try to defeat the evil Dio and his minions.

Way of the Samurai 4 — Way of the Samurai 4 takes place in the harbor town of Amihama, several years after the arrival of the “black ships” from the West ended Japan’s long history of cultural isolation. Will you aid the traditional isolationists in their attempts to exile this potential threat to the Japanese way of life? Will you aid the shogunate government in their attempts to keep the peace and establish cordial (but limited) relations with the foreigner contingent? Or will you aid the foreigners in their attempts to establish silk trade and foster cultural exchange, even at the expense of a few traditions? Who will you support? Who will you betray?

Gungrave: Overdose — Developed by Red Entertainment, Gungrave O.D. takes the carnage-based formula of the original, adds more characters and some new abilities to the mix. Expanding on its predecessor, it throws you in a cel-shaded world of exaggerated firefights and near delirious action sequences. In addition to franchise hero Grave, there are two additional fighters to choose from: Rocketbilly Redcadillac and Juji Kabane, who meet up with Grave at the beginning of the game. With the exception of the very first training battle, all three characters have the same set of missions to go through and deliver a different experience.

  • MSHD Collection for PSN?! YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!

  • If I’ve already bought digital version of MGS HD for Vita, can I download just MGS3 for Vita and not both of them?Because I don’t need MGS2 on my Vita at moment. And another question do I need to buy PS3 separately or cross-buy works here?

  • Might as well buy the disc version of MGS HD Collection since that’ll be the only way to play Peace Walker HD…

And for the Vita version of MGS HD, will MGS2 and MGS3 be sold separately? If so, can those who bought the bundle download the separate versions for free?

  • No more news about GTA III nor Vice City? I’m sad :[

  • @2, crossplay will work either way, you can use the cloud to continue your progress. But I doubt there will be a “One Price gets you both versions” deal. Wonder if Morgan or anyone else shed light on that, though.

  • cant wait got cs go :)!

  • what about cs:go? thought that was this week too

  • Where is the Counter Strike: GO?!?!?!

  • And what about Way of the Samurai 4? He will be released on PSN on 21st, right?

  • You guys should stop telling the psn games on the blogcast, you guys are always wrong. I was really excited about Legasista, and still waiting for GTA 3 . Any information on either of them?

  • I thought Ragnarok Odyssey was going to be on the PSN Store this week as well as released in regular stores, when is it coming to the PSN please?

  • Ohhhhhhhh Metalgearmetalgearmetalgear and…I just got the HD collection ._.

  • I have a question, if you buy the PS3 version of either Metal Gear Solid game do you get the Vita version too?

  • @3
Konami confirmed that both Peace Walker HD and the entire MGS HD Collection for PS3 are coming out next week August 28.

  • what about CS GO? D:

  • Any word on Ecolibrium, TravelBug, Imaginstruments, or t@g? Its been forever! And can anyone clarify is Ecolibrium coming to North America?

  • I was definitely not expecting Gungrave to be on here. Good stuff. Not a bad drop for summer , though a few games seem to be missing. Hope it’s not due to any delays and they were just missed on the list.

  • Since you guys have been pimping the whole cross play phenomenon lately, I’m wondering what a bunch of others are wondering. I already have the MGS collection for PS3, so is it possible for us previous owners to download it for Vita?

  • I did’t think Legasista was coming out so soon. After checking NISA’s website, it does say the 21st, so yay!!

  • Actually, speaking of missing games; What ever happened to the Vita version of Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock? Was delayed in June and no word since then and it’s almost September now.

  • @duke301: That would be up to Konami, not Sony. I also highly doubt they’ll retroactively change it as it would be horribly unfair to people who may have bought both versions already.

  • Yeah, what did happen to Doctor Who – Vita? Especially since the new season is about to start.

  • Hope to see Atlus bringing in more Persona 4: Arena goodies to PSN Store: Avatars and Dynamic Themes! Pretty please, ATLUS!!! Thank you very much… *Ahem*

  • Oh man…….the store is gonna crash again this week and go into maintenance all due to “Michael Jackson: The Experience” coming out this week…….just like CSI did to the servers last week……….*end sarcasm*

  • MGS3, one of my favorite MGS of all time. I have never played the full Gungrave, but remember playing the demo back in the day and it was fun. Might have to check that out. Wow, my Vita will be a very busy bee this week. Nice drop “so far”…Keep on Gaming.

  • Wait so there is another Dragon’s Dogma demo? That’s weird…

  • It’s really great to see that Deep Black is finally coming to PSN this Tuesday – but I’m upset that there is no free trial or demo like there was on the Xbox Live Marketplace. This lack of a free trial or demo is likely to have a negative impact on sales of this truly unique underwater sci-fi third-person shooter.

  • Yay! MGS HD collection! Though a little disappointed that theres no Peace Walker… hopefully itll find its way there in time

  • Is Ragnarok Odyssey going to be on the PSN this week ? Its showing a release date of 8/21 on the Sony Vita site.

  • Couple of questions:

    1) Do either of the MGS Vita downloads include the MSX Metal Gear titles that are in the retail release? If not, will they be a stand-alone release later?

    2) Again with no PSOne Classic or PSP Legacy uploads? Granted we have seen a few PSOne titles here and there, but no older PSP titles. EA Replay, FF VII Crisis Core, Mega Man Powered Up… Heck, even the PAL Breath of Fire 3 or MM Legends would be welcome.

    3) When will Growlancer be made available for the Vita, or is it already via the PS3 interface?

Looking forward to the Vita update next week, and hoping that the initial PSOne Classic selection is varied. Like to have something to play between Madden bouts. :-)

  • @SamuelSpade:

I think I heard somewhere that the Vita Dr Who game was either cancelled or shelved until further notice (which might as well be cancelled, given the current development environment for gaming; not many postponed titles resurface these days, and most that do are rarely worth the wait, sadly).

  • The Walking Dead Episode 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • @LovesJapanManga:

And bring it to the Vita. Love some Arc System fighting games. Bring on BlazBlue 3!

  • @8 CS:GO is out tuesday it’s been up for pre order since last tuesday

  • So very excited for the NHL13 demo. Looks like it’ll be a decent week for content :) Might pick up the MGS2 and MGS3 HD versions someday.

  • I pre ordered CS:GO I figured why not since I am going to buy it next week anyway and it was just $12 because I have PS+

  • @Mikaa1701 Assuming it’s like the disc version (Which it most likely is) then yes the MSX Metal Gear 1 & 2 will be on Metal Gear Solid 3

  • @logicsquirrel:

It was delayed. From what I can tell, it has actually been pushed back to late October or so. Can’t say I’m shocked, as this is the time of year that many games are either delayed to pad the Christmas sales figures, or sent to the End of Fiscal Year earnings padding that is the Feb/March release time slot.

Then again, if I remember right, XSEED is handling it, right? They just had some weird shipping issues with Last Story for the Wii; took a whole week for the GameStop I preordered from to get their shipment in, and I was informed that their shipments were delayed multiple times by XSEED. Really hope that is not a sign that they are in trouble; kinda like them…

  • @WilHiteWarrior:

Here’s hoping that they are. Hadn’t tried the retail collection, and am not sure how they sorted the games in whatever menu system they decided on.

  • Does the ps3 version of Snake Eater includes the original msx titles like in the Blue Ray version? im really looking forward for this games, i think ill wait to the boundle for peace walker but i wish someone clarifies that the digital versions are just like the blue ray. Thanks in advance

  • @Zemus101:

Would like to see NHL make its way to the Vita. Dug out a Genesis and have been playing NHL ’94, and would love to see a new portable hockey game. And a college football game. And a decent basketball game.

EA, it wouldn’t kill you to actually make some of these games for portables. Heck, once initial development is done, just make small changes each year and update the stats while adding an odd feature every other year. Y’know, what you have been doing to all your console sports games for the last twenty years.

  • Where The F U C K I N G hell is Dawnguard. You know what? I don’t give a S H I T anymore!!! I Already promised myself that if Dawnguard doesn’t release this week I’m done waiting!!! This is beyond B U L L S H I T!!!! Bethesda can go die and go to hell and get tortured for eternity!!!! F U BETHESDA!!! You Pieces of sh** eating superiority complex wielding, favoritism playing, worthless arrogant pukes!!!!!! Fu** you Fu** youFU** YOU!!!!!!!!!

  • nice drop with G:overdose i love those classics ps2 games. hey guys bring fatal frame please please P P P P P please

  • @Mikaa1701: Speaking from having both PS3 and Vita Versions of MGS HD, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are on both versions of the MGS3 game.

  • @41 you need some anger management calm down and quit acting like a spoiled little kid

  • F YOU BETHESDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ha ha @45 what are you 12?

  • @duke301:

Kinda doubt it. The PS3 collection has a few notable differences from the Vita version to qualify as a completely different game. That, and both were published well before the Cross Platform Purchase sell push was brought into play. Going by what I have seen, in the future purchases of one game title allowing both versions to be had is the direction that Sony (and several third party publishers) are going for, but remember: first, you have to remember that the publishers want to get their money, and some may not find the boost of sales from such a promotion to cover what they might get with both titles separately. Second, the Vita design is different enough from the PS3 that some titles will not be able to do such a system.

That said, would love to see more of the cross purchasing promos. If Tekken vs Street Fighter, Final Fantasy X HD, or Zone of the Enders HD did it, I would gladly pay a good chunk to get them on both systems. Not more than, say, $40 or $50, but still would be more inclined.

  • @gearhead32

For your information I’m not acting like a spoiled kid. Firstly i certainly hope you’ve done your homework on this situation.before speaking out otherwise you’d do well to mind your own business. But ill hear you out, so….?

  • I sure hope peace walker hd comes out on psn. I have the other 2 on the vita so that would be great. I’m excited for the NHL 13 demo. I’m getting scared there might be another lockout so it might be the only hockey for now.
