The Drop: Week of August 20th 2012 New Releases

On PS3 this week, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive brings deep tactical matches, iconic multiplayer maps, and PlayStation Move or mouse-and-keyboard support to PSN. The war on planet Cybertron rages on in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, which takes fans through the final, darkest hours of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for control of their dying planet — buy it on Blu-ray or PSN Tuesday.

On PSN, Retro/Grade is an innovative game that fuses the white knuckle thrills and over the top visuals of a shooter with the broad appeal of a rhythm game. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater both receive the full digital treatment and arrive on PSN for PS3 and PS Vita. Enjoy this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation 3

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron — With the stakes higher and scale bigger than ever, fans will control an unprecedented assortment of Transformers characters armed with authentic transformation designed around their unique abilities, including Grimlock’s nearly indestructible T-Rex form and the legendary Combaticons forming into the colossal Bruticus. Taking the franchise’s competitive online play to all-new heights, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron pits players head-to-head in blistering Autobot vs. Decepticon matches.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

PlayStation Network

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive — Counter-Strike: Global Offensive expands upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 12 years ago. CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.).

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS3 and PS Vita, sold separately) — Once underway, players take the role of a one-man army determined to stop a deadly high-tech weapon from falling into the hands of a highly elite resistance group known as Dead Cell. Users must once again utilize their skills in stealth, weaponry, and counter-terrorism to fight off the competing powers; and as they progress through a twisting storyline, eventually destroy the gigantic war machine, Metal Gear Ray.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS3 and PS Vita, sold separately) –– In the struggle to achieve world peace and world dominance in the Cold War period, rivaling governments are secretly developing weapons technology that could threaten the future existence of life. Destined to be the first, a race ensues to become the ultimate nation. A special elite tactical soldier is summoned to penetrate deep in the heart of enemy territory and obtain Intel about “Metal Gear”, a prototype weapon with nuclear capabilities. This is your mission and you must infiltrate alone. As “Naked Snake,” you must outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries in this critical chapter of the Metal Gear saga.

Retro/Grade — Retro/Grade stars ace fighter pilot Rick Rocket who has just saved the universe. Unfortunately, the massive destruction he left in his wake has caused a temporal anomaly that reversed the flow of time. You must assume control of Rick’s spacecraft and fight through the epic space battle … in reverse.

Michael Jackson: The Experience — He is the legendary King of Pop! Featuring an immersive and interactive experience for the Playstation Move that enables players to step into the shoes of Michael Jackson himself and re-live his most iconic moments through their own performance. The unparalleled tracklist features many of MJ’s biggest hits including Billie Jean, Beat It, Smooth Criminal and many more. There are an array of his awe-inspiring dance moves for players to learn and emulate within the game. Additionally, fans can sing along and test their vocal skills while immersed in the performance.

Deep Black — The unique underwater setting of Deep Black combines action-packed battles with an immersive story line that blends science-fiction, espionage and bio-terror. Realistic underwater physics add intensity to this third-person action thriller.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure HD — Based on the popular comic book series, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD is an arcade fighter that lets you duke it out with your favorite characters from the comics. JoJo must travel to Egypt to find a cure for his sick mother. Each fighting character has his or her own Stand, a guardian spirit that aids in the battle. Unlike mortal humans though, Stands can reanimate quickly after defeat, so use this to your advantage as you try to defeat the evil Dio and his minions.

Way of the Samurai 4 — Way of the Samurai 4 takes place in the harbor town of Amihama, several years after the arrival of the “black ships” from the West ended Japan’s long history of cultural isolation. Will you aid the traditional isolationists in their attempts to exile this potential threat to the Japanese way of life? Will you aid the shogunate government in their attempts to keep the peace and establish cordial (but limited) relations with the foreigner contingent? Or will you aid the foreigners in their attempts to establish silk trade and foster cultural exchange, even at the expense of a few traditions? Who will you support? Who will you betray?

Gungrave: Overdose — Developed by Red Entertainment, Gungrave O.D. takes the carnage-based formula of the original, adds more characters and some new abilities to the mix. Expanding on its predecessor, it throws you in a cel-shaded world of exaggerated firefights and near delirious action sequences. In addition to franchise hero Grave, there are two additional fighters to choose from: Rocketbilly Redcadillac and Juji Kabane, who meet up with Grave at the beginning of the game. With the exception of the very first training battle, all three characters have the same set of missions to go through and deliver a different experience.

[Editor’s Note: The following dates are subject to change. Game details are gathered from Press Releases from their individual publishers and/or ESRB rating descriptions.]

  • Is there any word on Way of the Samurai 4?

  • @Enigma2010:

    Uh, overreacting much?

Last I heard, Bethesda was citing that the design of the expansion was tailored around the XB360 design (which itself is also akin to the general design of the Windows PC market), and to get it to work on the PS3 would require major design overhauls.

Assuming that this is true (and I really don’t see them NOT releasing it if it is easily transferable, given the loss of revenue and bad PR), remember that the PS3 tends to be a bit difficult to get certain programs to run right, and an unfortunate amount of titles for it are XB360 games being “emulated” (somewhat) on the system, not really tapping its abilities or power. The drawback here is that when you tell a program to run another that was designed for different specs, you can (and will) have issues. Just look at how early SNES emulators couldn’t run water effects in games.

Also remember that to fix these issues it would take time and money, the latter of which they may feel is not cost-effective to complete. Hate to say it, but that is the way it works.

My age is irrelevant. Stick to the subject and quit being selective on what words you chose to react upon in my comment. Your acting like a person who has selective hearing.

  • @48 I really don’t care about Skyrim but, you are acting like a spoiled little kid especially in your previous post it’s good for some laughs

  • @Enigma2010saying FU over and over makes you seem like a spoiled little kid try acting mature if that is possible for you

  • When is GTA3 be avalible? Those GTA fans are anxious to get it and maybe GTA Vice City will be avalible soon as well. Tell me when Youtube be avalible in Canada and why isn’t that app avalible last week for Canada?(I’m just curious)

  • @Enigma2010:
On the side, it specifically says, ‘Don’t be a Jerk.’ You sir, are being a jerk, just thought I’d point that out. We get it, you’re angry, that’s fine but foul language is not necessary. Feel free to show your IQ and rip me a new one for my comments.

  • @56 he is just trolling the Blog I have seen several like him on here nothing new and yeah like you said it says don’t be a jerk.

  • @retro25:

Whenever the licensing issues are resolved. Haven’t heard anything about Vice City being made available any time soon, but last I heard, III had some music that they were having to negotiate to get it allowed. Given that, sadly it is not easy to get the music rights for game companies, as they have to decide who gets how much off each unit sold.

This is why you tend to see more rereleases of games like Mario, Sonic, or Final Fantasy: little to no licensing issues. Of course, there is a quick solution to get around it (assuming that you are able to get into the code and edit without crashing the program): change the music. Worked for almost all of the Crazy Taxi rehashes over the last ten years.

  • @Mikaa1701

You have no idea. Don’t even try the explanation shtick with me. I’ve been up and down through and thorough with the whole dawnguard fiasco. I’ve done my homework and studied and observed. I have made sure that I’m 100% accurate on THIS matter. Yes it is harder to make games on the PS3, however it should not be this difficult for a company thats had experience with this system for the 6 yrs the PS3 has been out. That would have been plausible years back, but is just utter BS today. Bethesda has had the time to get acquainted with the PS3 over 6yrs now.
Secondly, it is completely unexceptable with the whole PR disater they have had. Being silent and playing favorites is immature and irresponsible. You sell products by advertising and marketing not by being quiet and hush about it.Even Pete Hines is playing favorites. His own jersey is strewn with XBOX 360 on it. Someone should tell Pete Hines you come off like a jack*** wearing that. It doesn’t make people want to support or respect you.

  • @gearhead32:

To be fair, a while back his account was being used by a younger member of the household, and the result was posts similar to what we have seen. He did eventually get on and apologize for that event.

  • @60 hmm maybe that is happening again in any case maybe we will find out

  • @duke30

Your words fail you… Read up on the whole dawnguard fiasco, do your homework and then tell me who the “jerk” is,k?

  • @Enigma2010:

Lets run with the argument that Bethesda has had six years to learn the PS3. They have taken the dev kit, looked it over, then looked at the one for the XB360. From a basic tech standpoint, the PS3 is far and away more powerful, yet more time consuming to learn and work with. Execs and accountants do not like a project that will take time and resources to learn when it is far cheaper and faster to learn the simpler system and simply port it to the more powerful system (typically by emulation).

The byproduct of this is that you will eventually get some projects that cannot run on this trick without reworking either the code you are trying to emulate, or rework the emulation program itself (which could potentially cause far more problems with what was working originally).

This is similar to the days of the Saturn and PSX/PSOne, where the Saturn was far more powerful (at least with 2D), but most companies didn’t allow their development staff to learn it, as they could take the PSX code and slap it onto a disk, using barely any of the Saturn’s dual core. Case and point, look at the two Street Fighter Alpha games, then look at what time allowed for the Mega Man 8 games.

  • @Enigma2010:

Another example of this was when developers took PS2 games and slapped them onto either a Wii disk or PSP UMD, as both systems could run the games with (usually) minor control fixes. Eventually, once the PS2 was fading, the Wii began to get many PSP projects ported over so that the publishers could get the most bang for their money. Again, from a technical stand point, the Wii is more powerful than a PSP, but it was cheaper to get the system to run the program than program the Wii to play a game from the ground up.

This is among the reasons that many developers are in financial trouble right now, as they sink all of their money into getting these advanced graphic engines to run, build their worlds/games, run bug fixes (usually), and then publish them (with the marketing and distribution). Costs for most games first runs are in the millions, and this is assuming the games will sell at all. Many do not fare as well as hoped, and some flat out bomb. Game companies are still bound to what sells and what gets them money, and sadly many good games are tossed under the bus due to bad sales. Heck, this is one reason that it took so long for a sequel to Golden Sun to be released.

  • Gungrave!!!!!!!!!!!!

can we get Samurai Champloo, Blood+ by Grasshopper Manufacturer too :P

  • LOL no this is me the owner not my nephew. If i’m coming off as a jerk, i apologise. I’ve been with Bethesda since the beginning and became very passionate and believed in Bethesda. I was so disheartened about the fall of square enix I wanted so badly to believe in another company. To feel again how SE could make me feel with their games. They truly changed parts of my life with their epic storytelling, but then SE fell… I started to watch Bethesda. One day I seen what they-Bethesda were doing and it was instantly I thought I found the successor who would fill the gap SE left… For up till this point I believed.
Then Bethesda, like SE started disrespecting their fans and we have yet another company who has become rotten and evil. Again for the second time I was betrayed… So I’m at a heavy loss and filled with anger in my heart. I’m sorry I am at a loss of words….

  • a huge update but nothing worth my money oh well maybe next week

  • Anyword on Legasista?

  • Article
    (ノ°-°)ノ

  • wasn’t dragon dogma already a demo? is this error if so please fix

  • Just what happened to Legasista ???? NIS AMERICA website still says its coming out august 21st

  • Hmmm… Only interested in the Sleeping Dogs and Dragons Dogma Demos

  • Still no word on how much the MGS HD games will cost… Guess I’ll have to wait and see. I’d like to know beforehand though, so I can decide whether to buy the games separately or just wait for the 28th and get the Collection.

Also, does Konami plan on releasing other full games on PSN? Castlevania Lords of Shadow, maybe? Zone of Enders HD?

  • @66
why let your nephew on anyways? since he might troll the blogs and stuff and make you look bad. i can deal with it (honestly i was laughing :D not to be rude or anything), but still, it can (and will) be a waste of time to read and to respond to, for anyone. im not trying to butt in or anything, im just saying.

as for the drop, looks good, but not as big as the last few (seemingly). nothing in interest really, except for michael jackson: the experience, retro grade, and maybe sleeping dogs. im gonna have to check that demo out. since i have a vita, im very excited for next week. cant wait.

  • Eh people will often betray us, especially big corporations… but I try to exercise forgiveness as Jesus would have of me.. because He’ll never betray you or turn his back on you :)
I do think you might be overreacting but I’m also not gonna argue with you. God be with you

  • Please add Mercenaries Playground of Destruction to PS2 classics. That is my all time favorite game and can’t find it anywhere.

  • Counter strike o.O?!!!!!!!

  • Also, very important, do Plus members get any discount on MGS HD games when they release this Tuesday? :D

  • @77 yes CS is out tuesday

  • MGS Collection on PSN? FINALLY!!! What about Peacewalker?!!

  • under demos sleeping dogs is listed, will it be a game trial? cause i don’t think open world games get demos, right? hope it is a game trial cause i’m not sure if gamefly has any left to send me, it says they’re low on stock. hope this game sell many units so we can get a sequel. it looks awesome.

  • PS+ is amazing. I already own Outland but not BloodRayne, downloaded it and I’m really enjoying the old school style. Just renewed my script for PS+ a few nights ago, best 50 bucks a year I spend.

  • Any price on deepblack?

  • Is Ragnarok Odyssey going to be on the PSN this week ? Its showing a release date of 8/21 on the us.playstation site.

I would purchase the Chinese/English Version if I can get It on 8/21 from the store.

  • why is dragon dogma’s demo back up it was already available. is this some sort of error Sony?

  • Yay, Digital Metal Gear! ^_^

  • Any chance we will ever get valkyrie profile as ps one classic or valkyrie profile:lenneth as a psp digital download title (compatible with vita)? Thanks.

  • Will Transformers: Fall of Cybertron be a digital download on the PlayStation Store?

  • PLEASE ADD ALPHABETICAL SORTING TO OUR XMB PSN DIGITALLY DOWNLOADED LIST IN A FUTURE FIRMWARE UPDATE – PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

  • Great drop on the digital releases.
Hope to see more on the full list once the PSN store updates.

  • I will be picking-up Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, the demo was great. I notice there is no Michael Jackson: The Experience Demo, I would like to try it before buying it. I would recommend adding the King’s Field PSOne series.

  • Come on, nobody knows if the orginal msx titles are in the digital version of snake eater? I know the question may be for most people kind of dumb but i dont read it in the game description

  • i own the MGS HD Collection for Vita already, and would like to buy Peace Walker HD only, with the retouched visuals and trophy support, on Vita instead of PS3. please make it happen

i would also like to buy Final Fantasy 1 & 2 for PSP, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core ASAP

  • Lol. Still no decent Vita stuff. What a joke. Playing old games from old systems by buying them AGAIN isn’t all that exciting. And not only are PSOne classics still unreleased (like one week will make a huge difference?) But now Ragnarok Oddyssey is delayed until mid 4th Quarter – The ONLY new decent title since May.

I guess I can tell my family and friends to go ahead and trade in their Vitas just like I did. I’m sure they’ll be put in the same storage area as the PSP Go and Sony will continue to ignore our questions and pleas.

  • Grand Theft Auto 3?

  • Anyone know if the metal gear games are cross buy?

  • @Nates4Christ

Naw they said on the blogcast that youd have to buy them separate for PS3 and Vita if you wanted both

  • Great to see Gungrave as a PS2 Classic. Since Mastiff seems to be on board with them, any chance of a La Pucelle Tactics PS2 Classic?

  • Any information on Way of the Samurai 4 would be greatly appreciated. Many of the fans of this series including myself have patiently waited nearly two years for the english release. It makes me think that in that two years, myself and the other fans of the series probably could have taught ourselves japanese and just bought the japanese version. But we are lazy in America and expect everyone to do things for us, up to the point that our only obligation is to make a purchase. Kind of like the child who is screaming at Bethesda. I learned to play the saxophone earlier this year, lost 25 lbs, got a membership to a gym, and started fixing my house to sell it, I have not played video games for several months the only thing that is going to get me back in front of a tv with a controller in my hand is this game… Your move PSN.
