TGS 2012: Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled

Tokyo Game Show is always an exciting time for gamers everywhere, as we all look forward to new games and other news being unveiled during the show. This year is no exception. We are always looking for ways to create better experiences for our gamers, and to that end, we just unveiled a smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 at the show.

PlayStation 3

The new PS3 will be available in two different models, with 250GB and 500GB HDDs which will allow you to store even more of your digital life. It also features a smaller, streamlined design that will look great as part of any entertainment system. The new model is approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3.

In order to maintain the superior gaming experiences that you expect from us here at PlayStation, we are always looking for ways to change and evolve with your gaming behavior. You might remember the smaller models that we launched for PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable), and we know that many of you love the opportunity to add these streamlined models to your home. Additionally, as developers continue to release deep and rich digital gaming content, providing an option for larger HDD is essential, especially for games with large DLC packs, and full game downloads, as well as personal entertainment content. The biggest and best games live on PS3 this holiday season, and the new PS3 is the perfect way to play.

We are also excited to announce that the launch of this new PS3 model will include incredible additional value. The 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25th for $269.99 (MSRP) as part of a limited edition bundle featuring UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus digital content for the highly acclaimed digital title, DUST 514. This bundle offers more than $70 in total combined value.

New PlayStation 3 Bundle

The winner of over 60 industry and Game of the Year awards, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception will be re-released next week in an all new Game of the Year Edition, which includes 12 new multiplayer maps, over 40 multiplayer skins, Fort Co-Op Adventure, and Shade Survival Mode, a value of over $45 in bonus content. In case you somehow missed it, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception is the latest installment in Naughty Dog’s storied UNCHARTED franchise that chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake. UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition is a great way to kick off your gameplay experience on the newest PS3 model.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will also be available as a standalone title on September 25th for $39.99 (MSRP).

CCP Games’ DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to PS3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of EVE Online, players wage war in the next generation of first-person shooters, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire of thousands of online gamers. This bundle includes an incredible amount of bonus value – more than $30 in total.

For those of you who do not own a PS3 yet, or have been looking to add another PS3 to your household, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in before the next wave of blockbuster games launch this holiday season.

PlayStation 3

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th in conjunction with the release of Assassin’s Creed III – one of the most anticipated games for this holiday season featuring four exclusive levels, only available on PS3.

  • I want one of these so badly. I’ll probably pick one up when work starts up again in March, or I’ll just end up waiting on the PS4 (which I’m hoping will be announced at E3 2013, hint hint).

  • Thank goodness they went back to shiny. I hope to one day own both xbox 360 and ps3, and after I bought my thin matte ps3 they came out with the shiny xbox after having a matte one. That totally rocked my ocd so I’m glad now I can have two shiny matching consoles one day.

  • Any chance we can have ps2/1 backward capabilities? Because if not, I’m gunna stick with my original fat ps3. I don’t even mind hardwiring it to the interwebs

  • So that hideous piece of shiz was real?

Do you guys try to make the ugliest console revisions possible? Stop it. Seriously. That is hideous, even more hideous than the original Slim.

Your designers should be ashamed. The original PS3 is a beautiful machine. Slim and Derper Slim look cheap. And Derper Slim doesn’t even have a disc slot?

    This isn’t ’95.

Guess if I want a second PS3, I better hurry before the original slim is gone. No way I’d want this hideous thing in my house.

  • I’m sorry, but that thing is just plain ugly. It’s an absolute eyesore!

  • Looks like a top loader would suck because then dust can get into the system easier but I’m thinking of buying the 500gb one because mine is acting all buggy, most big games that I download take literally 3-5 minutes to load up I don’t know why and also since the new update and I have ps plus turned on it says curropt data I don’t know why never happened before the update, never the less I might buy the ac3 bundle only if it’s not top loader.

  • Why did you increase the price? What company would do that?

Better buy your ps3 now. it’s cheaper to upgrade the Hdd by yourself. and the current model is way better!

  • sony i really think it’s time for a new ps eye toy design and new technology for the ps3 it needs better audio i mean really good audio and also it would be good if you guys can add a hd camera lens built in cause the quality isn’t the best please make it come true please

  • i mean new technology in the eye toy i mean

  • Smaller, more attractive and quieter (safe to assume) is good, nice, better and how it should be.

But no price drop and instead of keeping the bundles at the same price of a normal SKU, there’s a price increase? That’s stupid and it’s even more stupid when the Wii U’s lowest priced SKU is $299.99. On top of that, it seems this PlayStation 3 model is top loading, it still only has two USB ports, no improved PlayStation 3 controller and still no 802.11 b/g/n WI FI, which makes things more stupid.

Come on Sony, you have to do what you have to do and what the consumers want so they buy your products. That’s what makes consumers buy products.

  • Most likely top loading like the slim PS2, i would like to get one even though i don’t need it but maybe in the future.

As for charging your peripherals you guys could use USB power adapters, they save a lot of the hassle.

  • It looks great but thought the price would drop a bit from the slim models. Nonetheless, I have a 320GB slim that I’m happy with.

  • why u making a new ps3 which is not needed? all thought should be on the next gen playstation -_-

  • @ John
what is Going to be the price point of the 250 GB system when it’s not in the bundle? I am very curious to know .please get back to me thank you ;-)

  • How do you put in your Blu-ray movies or your games
Do you slide it in or is it a pop top ?

  • ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! THERE’S ANOTHER ONE?! i still haven’t upgraded from my 80gb “fat” model. i was just about to upgrade from my PS3 to a slim 160gb model. THEN THIS THING SHOWS UP?! *sigh* now i’ll have to get this one instead…

    @PS_man1984

nice avatar! you ever hear Dr. Wily’s stage 1 theme from Mega Man 2?

  • I was waiting for a price decrease on PSV, or at least on the memory card…

    Anyway,
Will new colors announced for PSV coming to US??

  • Why no USB on the back ?

  • @60: Why on earth would a BUNDLE be the same price as a regular PS3?

Unless that bundle has less HDD space than the Regular SKU it wouldn’t make any sense.

  • @58: They did, it’s called the PS Eye. EyeToy = PS2, PS Eye = PS3. They need an HD PS Eye. Hate the PS Eye’s low resolution, among many other short comings.

  • @67 kiratachibana yes next year a blue and red one will be released

  • Should have a USB port (or two!) in the rear. Should have multiple HDMI outputs for people who have a 3DTV but don’t have a receiver capable of processing a 3D signal (so you can send the full audio to your receiver, but send the video to your 3DTV).

An SD card slot for storing game saves would be nice (lost my game saves when my last PS3 got the YLOD). This should be configurable in the system software as a primary storage area. ‘Course that wouldn’t be as much of a problem if the internal HDD used a standard filesystem, then I could have saved my game saves before sending the system back to Sony.

I’m torn on the tray vs. slot issue. I initially didn’t like the slot (seems like something that actively “grabs” the disc could cause more problems than it solves), but I’ve grown to like it on the PS3 and the Wii. At least it’s not top loading as I feared when I first saw the new design.

On the software side, where’s FLAC audio support and DIVX+ HD/MKV support? I know you need to keep things back for the PS4 so there’s a clear delineation in features, but the PS3 hardware is more than capable of it, and most modern Blu-ray players include MKV and sometimes FLAC support.

  • I just read that in Japan Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational won’t be “Cross Buy,” purchase once, play anywhere, like it should be and how is the standard.

Why do you think the Fruit company sells so much and why you are in the current situation you are in Sony? You make pretty good hardware but make terrible business decisions that cripple it.

  • While I don’t think a new model was needed, those bundles are pretty sweet! I can see a lot of people buying that UC3 bundle.

Also, considering how well designed this model is, I have no doubt the PS4 will look awesome.

  • @ #10,16,18,21,43,46,47,56,61,65,etc. go to N4g.com for better pics the top of the new PS3 slides from the right to the left and that is where the disc will be placed. Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.

  • I just read that in the Land of the Rising Sun Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational won’t be “Cross Buy,” purchase once, play anywhere, like it should be and how is the standard.

Why do you think the Fruit company sells so much and why you are in the current situation you are in? You make pretty good hardware but make terrible business decisions that cripple it.

  • Price Increase?! Really?! The Wii U is going to do a whole lot better now… smh

  • You know, revisions to hardware, cheaper manufacturing costs should trickle down to lower end pricing for consumers. Sony…… wake up.

  • @76 Exactly if you had a $200 ps3 next to the Wii-U, you would’ve had a lot of of people second guessing. I dont get Sony sometimes

  • @69 Elvick_

You can’t be serious. I don’t understand how there are people that actually say/post things like this.

Why on Earth would a bundle be the same price as a regular PS3? because they’re suppose to be. Don’t believe me? One AMAZING example, every PS3 bundle (except for the PlayStation Move bundles) has been the same price as the a regular PS3.

    @73 darkedgex

Completely agree. There has to be more USB ports, some in the front and back, multiple HDMI ports, memory card slot and FLAC audio support and DIVX+ HD/MKV support. There’s no excuse. And making the PlayStation 4 be the first PlayStation console to have them is not excusable. There’s no reason both PS3 and PS4 can’t have it and it wouldn’t make the PS4 look or be less attractive if the PS3 has some of the features the PS4 does.

  • Are there any details about how noisy it is? My launch day PS3 is still working fine but watching a movie using it means the TV is almost at full volume to combat the noise of the fan in the PS3.

  • why isn’t their broadcast of TGS were you can watch?

  • The 12GB PlayStation 3 should also release outside of Europe with a lower price point. That’s the perfect SKU for casuals, kids, etc. Would have been perfect for an Wonderbook bundle. No casual wants or needs a 250 or 500GB PlayStation 3, except for the casuals who will use their PlayStation for things other than games that use HDD space, but only some casuals would.

A lower priced PlayStation 3 and Vita would be great for you. $150/$200 PlayStation 3 nexts to a $300 Wii U looks way better especially if the PS3 has more storage space and some extras. No wonder you are in the situation you are in Sony.

  • Stop online pass! Everyone is sick of them, they are 100% greedy and anti consumer!

  • The 250GB PlayStation 3 SKU is $250, so how is it that the Uncharted 3 bundle is $270 when UC3 GotY costs $40 and the Dust 514 content is $30, and all previous PS3 bundles with games that were $60 were the same price as a regular PS3.

You keep falling lower and lower Sony.

  • I was the biggest advocate for this redesign when the rumors first began circulating, that is until I read about the price increase. No two ways about it, if I want to purchase the new PS3 next Tuesday, I’m forced to pay $269.99 without a standalone model being available. Honestly, I wanted to be waiting at the door when this thing dropped, but now I’m turned off. I do not see any reason why the states shouldn’t have access to the value 12gb model as well – many of us already have large hdd’s that we were looking to transfer into the new units. I’m afraid I’m passing.

  • This has to be the ugliest playstation ever!!

  • Think Sony should have stayed away from the Uncharted 3 bundle… They already did it with the previous slim model. They should have just left it stand alone consoles for a lower price point and just waited until PS All-Stars comes out and do the bundle with that instead.

  • @82 you could at Nico Nico but its in Japanese look up watch TGS 2012 the computer is your friend, look and yea shall find

  • Wheres TGS coverage?????????

  • @90 msg me on ps3 mods won’t approve me putting the site on here

  • OH MY LORDY LORD can’t allow another sites addy on here because it might be informative

  • My issue is the number of console activations. As we all know, they’ve been reduced from five consoles to two. My content is already on two consoles (or rather three if I count an old PS3 in need of repair), which means even if I use this newer PS3 solely as a way to stream Amazon video in the living room, I wouldn’t be able to activate that console, so no streaming video. The PS3 as a Blu-ray player is still so much better than the standalone Blu-ray player I already have, so three PS3s in the house would be mighty nice…

  • meh. I guess it’s ok but its not that amazing. $270 seems a bit much for what we get in this…. throw in a year of PSN+ IMO.

  • please make it able to play ps2 games ( discs)

  • wow :) i bought a scarlet red PS3 2 months ago :P i might just get this one too

  • I would probably get one if the activated system limit had not been reduced to two.
I used to have three PS3’s in the house but there was no need after that.
Make it cheaper, it will sell way better!!

  • Not bad, but I love my 60GB (250GB HDD) model.

  • Can not be so stupid as to end the life of a product, they increase in price. My brother wants to buy a new PS3, but without the obligation of Uncharted 3.
So let’s wait for the 250GB version with no game included. And it costs less than $ 250. Or a 12GB for $ 199, would be perfect.
