TGS 2012: Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled

John Koller's Avatar Posted by Vice President, PlayStation Brand Marketing, SIEA

Tokyo Game Show is always an exciting time for gamers everywhere, as we all look forward to new games and other news being unveiled during the show. This year is no exception. We are always looking for ways to create better experiences for our gamers, and to that end, we just unveiled a smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 at the show.

PlayStation 3

The new PS3 will be available in two different models, with 250GB and 500GB HDDs which will allow you to store even more of your digital life. It also features a smaller, streamlined design that will look great as part of any entertainment system. The new model is approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3.

In order to maintain the superior gaming experiences that you expect from us here at PlayStation, we are always looking for ways to change and evolve with your gaming behavior. You might remember the smaller models that we launched for PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable), and we know that many of you love the opportunity to add these streamlined models to your home. Additionally, as developers continue to release deep and rich digital gaming content, providing an option for larger HDD is essential, especially for games with large DLC packs, and full game downloads, as well as personal entertainment content. The biggest and best games live on PS3 this holiday season, and the new PS3 is the perfect way to play.

We are also excited to announce that the launch of this new PS3 model will include incredible additional value. The 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25th for $269.99 (MSRP) as part of a limited edition bundle featuring UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus digital content for the highly acclaimed digital title, DUST 514. This bundle offers more than $70 in total combined value.

New PlayStation 3 Bundle

The winner of over 60 industry and Game of the Year awards, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception will be re-released next week in an all new Game of the Year Edition, which includes 12 new multiplayer maps, over 40 multiplayer skins, Fort Co-Op Adventure, and Shade Survival Mode, a value of over $45 in bonus content. In case you somehow missed it, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception is the latest installment in Naughty Dog’s storied UNCHARTED franchise that chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake. UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition is a great way to kick off your gameplay experience on the newest PS3 model.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will also be available as a standalone title on September 25th for $39.99 (MSRP).

CCP Games’ DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to PS3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of EVE Online, players wage war in the next generation of first-person shooters, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire of thousands of online gamers. This bundle includes an incredible amount of bonus value – more than $30 in total.

For those of you who do not own a PS3 yet, or have been looking to add another PS3 to your household, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in before the next wave of blockbuster games launch this holiday season.

PlayStation 3

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th in conjunction with the release of Assassin’s Creed III – one of the most anticipated games for this holiday season featuring four exclusive levels, only available on PS3.

PlayStation fans – let us know what you think of the new PS3 model. Stay tuned for more PlayStation 3 updates here on PlayStation.Blog!

To all of those complaining about a price increase, we haven’t seen a set US price for the new 250GB model. A 160GB Slim costs $250, with no extra content. This version of the console is a BUNDLE, with over $70 of content, but with only an extra $20 price over the 160GB Slim model (so you get an extra 90GB of extra storage). Like I said, we haven’t gotten any pricing yet (in US dollars) on the new models yet, nor even when it will be coming out over here.

Without a 12gb model for SCEA then I will wait for the PS4 even if my current machine fails and YLOD’s… Without an upgrade to wireless “N” and the lack of additional USB ports etc makes it hard to justify purchasing a new PS3 like I was want to do. And reading the Engadget article on the slim it seems to indicate that the 12gb model does not have an internal HDD upgrade option and the external drive is limited to a proprietary design that when connected disables the on-board 12gb flash memory.

just when you thought they couldn’t make it smaller, awesome!!!

You guys should enlist in a restaurant MENU design course, this price will make look the Nintendo WiiU look not so expensive, normal people does not stop to analyze stuff, they will say, look the old ps3 and the NEW wii, I will pay 70 bucks more for a “NEW TYPE” of console.

CaptainJames99 said:

@graphite the 12 gig flash model which wont be seen here yet needs an “adaptor” probably a replacement for the current caddy to mount an hdd, of course only available from sony. No word on the other 2 new versions yet but still a silly oversight.

Does the disc drive work like the PS2 Slim?

TooLVolta said:

It works like the ps2 slim, theres a button you press and the cover flaps open.

How much for just the 250GB, non-bundle? Also, when will the US get the white one?

PaperCarrier said:

September 19th, 9:18 am

$270 and it comes with a 250GB HDD and two games, not bad.

@ captin james.
SCEE corrected there typo mistake.
its still the same old HDDs… inside

“Owners of the 12GB model will be able to connect a 2.5 inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official Mounting Bracket”

Just a Sony specific bracket…..

pudgenet said:

It actually is a price decrease. You now get a 250GB with Uncharted 3 for $270 instead of 320GB with Uncharted 3 for $300. And you get 500GB with AC3 for $300. You get more for the same price as before, and you can get almost as much as before for less.

It’s bizarre that anyone sees this as a price increase.

pudgenet said:

September 19th, 9:37 am

Can I pop the HD out of my PS3 slim and use it in the new PS3?

cusman said:

September 19th, 9:59 am

Why aren’t they offering the 16GB flash-memory version here? If I wanted lots of storage, I would buy the cheapest no-storage or just 16GB storage option, and then put in 1TB 5200rpm 2.5″ drive for ~$90 or 750GB 7200rpm 2.5″ drive for ~$85. Those the prices for the Western Digital drives of those specs currently available on Amazon.

cusman said:

September 19th, 10:03 am

@pudgenet The one time I have upgraded my HDD on PS3, I followed the guidance of Backup to USB drive of sufficient size, swap Internal Drive with your new one, then restore from USB drive backup.

It took a while even when I was going from just 80GB to 500GB which is now nearly full so I am looking at larger PS3 compatible dries like 750GB or 1TB. I imagine going from 500GB backup/restore to 750GB/1TB will take even longer.

cusman said:

Uncharted 3 is included free which is $40-50 retail nowadays.
Dust 514 is Free-2-Play, but the bundle is including $30 worth of DLC.

I have only one question :

the HDMI port in this new ultra slim ps3 will it be 1.3 or 1.4 ?

PainOfSarrow said:

September 19th, 10:58 am

who the hack wouldnt have a PS3 by now ? anyways very kool looking Model.

GraphiteGB said:

September 19th, 11:01 am

The HDMI port has ZERO to do with the signals sent over it. It plastic and metal
Will the PS3 have the electronics to send the signals. Answer NO, it will remain HDMI 1.3 but currently There is NO HDMI 1.4 content even on PS3 even. 3D BDs only uses 1.3 bandwidth limits. all html1.4 devices are lower version compatable
4K content does not exist… YET to run on PS3…

leftnotracks said:

Smaller? Who cares. Prettier? Subjective. Why not tell us something actually useful?

Does it finally support wireless N? Is there a USB port on the back for a hub? Is it quieter? Does it run cooler? Is there more RAM or VRAM to support improved graphics in new games that support them? Did they get rid of the useless proprietary component cable and bundle an HDMI cable like they should have all along?

I can only guess, and my guesses are: No, no, no, no, no, and no.

Icestar10 said:

I already have 3 PS3 slims but would be willing to replace one of them if you offered a new one in a pretty color. I’m sure I saw a pink PS2 once….

I had to go thru the agony of putting purple skins on all my PS3s

“The design looks amazing. But seriously, with Move, PSEye, Headset dongle and 2+ controllers, why have only two USB ports?

I never understood the logic..”

move is wireless, headsets are wireless, controllers are wireless only constant plug in would be the webcam… i never understood peoples poor logic.

Thank you Playstation for this exciting news.

Whenever I see this new PS3 model, I always ask: is tehere anyone at Sony design center who really knows how to beautifully design a new electronic? Damn.. this new model is too ugly and it lookes like a grill! *___* Amd it looks like it is too weak, fragile and ready to break at any time…

That “fat” black piano is the most beautiful among all models.
Just my opinion, for sure.

IcedDice777 said:

Yikes! I hope whomever worked on this latest PS3 redesign has NO say or part on the PS4 final design. This thing is Ugly with Capital U. Capital U dawgs!…so, we know this is serious! It’s like whoopie goldberg and a horny/rabid wet raccoon had this offspring. Seriously…on a serious note, allow us PSN Plus members to have 3 systems active instead of two and i’ll consider picking a third PS3 (Old Slim, of course). My .02

dime5150 said:

September 19th, 12:54 pm

OH Sony. I’m already on my 2nd PS3 because the first one (60gb) decided to die after a few years due to YLOD. I don’t like this whole redesigning of the system. Once? ok. 3 different designs of the same system? That’s over the top IMHO. It’s time to get focused on the PS4/ next generation of systems.

Altair0115 said:

Will the HDD drives be interchangeable, like the previous models?

xtremeimport said:

September 19th, 1:11 pm

Needs more USBs. thats my only complaint. I have the 160 fat model and it only has 2. My 7.1 headset, move, charge cable for the headset, BUZZ usb plug and more. It just makes sense to have more. I know they wanted to cut price so they removed them, but now that the tech is cheaper they should’ve thrown these back on. even 1 on the back and the 2 in the front.
