TGS 2012: Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled

Tokyo Game Show is always an exciting time for gamers everywhere, as we all look forward to new games and other news being unveiled during the show. This year is no exception. We are always looking for ways to create better experiences for our gamers, and to that end, we just unveiled a smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 at the show.

PlayStation 3

The new PS3 will be available in two different models, with 250GB and 500GB HDDs which will allow you to store even more of your digital life. It also features a smaller, streamlined design that will look great as part of any entertainment system. The new model is approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3.

In order to maintain the superior gaming experiences that you expect from us here at PlayStation, we are always looking for ways to change and evolve with your gaming behavior. You might remember the smaller models that we launched for PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable), and we know that many of you love the opportunity to add these streamlined models to your home. Additionally, as developers continue to release deep and rich digital gaming content, providing an option for larger HDD is essential, especially for games with large DLC packs, and full game downloads, as well as personal entertainment content. The biggest and best games live on PS3 this holiday season, and the new PS3 is the perfect way to play.

We are also excited to announce that the launch of this new PS3 model will include incredible additional value. The 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25th for $269.99 (MSRP) as part of a limited edition bundle featuring UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus digital content for the highly acclaimed digital title, DUST 514. This bundle offers more than $70 in total combined value.

New PlayStation 3 Bundle

The winner of over 60 industry and Game of the Year awards, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception will be re-released next week in an all new Game of the Year Edition, which includes 12 new multiplayer maps, over 40 multiplayer skins, Fort Co-Op Adventure, and Shade Survival Mode, a value of over $45 in bonus content. In case you somehow missed it, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception is the latest installment in Naughty Dog’s storied UNCHARTED franchise that chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake. UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition is a great way to kick off your gameplay experience on the newest PS3 model.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will also be available as a standalone title on September 25th for $39.99 (MSRP).

CCP Games’ DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to PS3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of EVE Online, players wage war in the next generation of first-person shooters, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire of thousands of online gamers. This bundle includes an incredible amount of bonus value – more than $30 in total.

For those of you who do not own a PS3 yet, or have been looking to add another PS3 to your household, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in before the next wave of blockbuster games launch this holiday season.

PlayStation 3

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th in conjunction with the release of Assassin’s Creed III – one of the most anticipated games for this holiday season featuring four exclusive levels, only available on PS3.

  • The lid better be motorized, because I can’t imagine how sliding it back and forth every time I’ll want to swap a disc would be convenient. The design reminds me of the first Sega Megadrive model, which isn’t necesserily a good thing – you don’t want your product to remind people of something that’s over 20 years old. This looks like it’s been designed primarily with cost efficiency in mind, so how do intend to justify the price tag ? The system is almost six years old now, and on top of that I can get the previous slim model with 250GB storage for about 200 Euros in a game stores here in Poland, not to mention auction sites.

No need to thank me Sony.

  • Is that the new George Foreman grill? Haaaaaaa just kiding lol. I already got a slim 160gb model and im happy with, so no thanks!

  • Will new model also still have HDCP signal instead of an HDMI one for gameplay capture through HDMI?

  • Ok seriously Sony WTH were you thinking?? At least the first Slim PS3 had some kind of purpose, even though it was an ugly SOB, because it was cheaper and used less power than the original GREAT PS3.

But what was the point of this new slim(mer) PS3?? Who cares if it’s a little bit lighter and a little bit smaller? So what?

I just looked at the IGN unboxing of this thing, and you gotta be kidding me with that new top-loading disc mechanism?! That looks so cheap and flimsy it’s not even funny. WTH was wrong with the original slot-loading drive?? That top-loading drive really reminds me of some old 80’s tape recorder with thr flip-up opening.

I was looking for a replacement of my old 20GB “fat” PS3 which got the damn YLOD, but there’s no way Im putting this thing in my home.

Just re-release the old “fat” design model just using the new more power efficient Cell & RSX and give people what they want for once!! 4 usb ports, PS2 compatibility, a nice design and a friggin slot-loading drive, at a reasonable price and I’ll buy that day one.

  • is the white version only going to be released in Japan or also in the US??? n if so when is it going to be released??

  • I really don’t think this was a financially clever decision for Sony…(I’m 16 I really have no idea), but it seems like the next generation is just around the corner, so they should prepare for that, instead E.G. infrastructure upgrades so the network will be stable. Also this model, with the sliding top and the cheap looking surfaces seems like the PSP e-1000 of the PS3 I’m glads I got one of the original slims…

  • I thought the whole point of making the new models cheaper to produce, was to actually make them cheaper… A price increase is just plain stupid at this point. Why buy a 6-year-old system, when you can buy the brand new Wii U for the same price? Sony should’a made it cheaper…

  • To every dumb@ss saying this isn’t woth it, it is. There is more to the PS3 then meets the eye! Think about it! This New PS3 might have a newer ability such as the blu ray diskreader not burning out on you! MORE GAMES, A BUNDLE, AND A VOUCHER? WHO THE HELL WOULDN’T BUY THIS INCLUDING ASSASSINS CREED III? Seriously? I bet this PS3 can/t overheat with a newer model of a builtin fan and still has a built-in wifi!

  • I personally like the new design mainly because of the lid.I am on my 3rd ps3 now since launch when the other 2 died they had disc inside which meant the disc were stuck since the system would not come back on.One was a rented game so I had to incur late charges til Sony could send the disc and system back. Now i can kill as many as I can without having to send the system in to get my game back.My old 60gig is still setting here dead with a copy of black ops in it!

  • i own a ps3 slim 120 gb but im thinking very hard about getting the ps3 super slim 500gb for two reasons. one im running out of memory and two ive had it for 2 or 3 years plus it comes with assassins creed 3!

  • its really bad that there is no disc drive for people with tight tv stands and no more ejecting disks sigh, at least when will we get the drive-less ps3 for 199? Europe and Australia has them i believe

  • There is a hands on for the new slim on IGN for the UK. The slider has springs so it opens by itself, but needs to be closed. The HD has a different mounting bracket than the older slim, but still uses a laptop SATA drive.

  • They’re getting uglier and uglier. Do not like. I’m very excited for the upcoming system from Nin***** called the *** U!

  • Seems Legit xD

  • Greetings John Koller, Sony ,et all.

I own a Ps3 slim with the exact hardware specifications as this redesign. I would have considered a shift to the new design if it had any of these features:

    • Increased Random Access Memory

    • Solid State Hard drive

Aesthetics are important, but more as a secondary consideration. My main interest is in performance, stability and progressive program platform support.

I enjoy the Vita and my current slim model PS3. I look forward to Sony’s future generation of console. PS4, Orbis or whatever you choose to name it.

  • Why is this thing so damn ugly??? That ridged disc tray makes it look like the Atari 2600. What happened to Sony’s industrial design??????????????????

  • Why does Sony have this aversion to making attractive gaming consoles?

  • Still need more USB ports. front and back. Headset and PS eye and it’s already filled up

  • UGH! Terrible…. getting rid of the disc slot is a terrible idea. I still have my FAT PS3 with PS2 built in,and hope it lasts forever because the last thing I want to do is fiddle with some stupid lid.

And the person giving the responses is clueless. No backwards compatibility? I sure hope you mean no HARDWARE based backwards compatibility.

  • It baffles me that no one see the value in this new unit. It saves Sony money that they are passing on to the consumer in the reward of bigger hdd. The $269 250gb is essentially only $200, if all were bought separately. They are only trying to cut the cost of the console to finally turn a profit, hence the new BluRay access. That’s why the 2 other USB ports were dropped from the slim as well. If you need more USB ports, by an extender. I do think it was an odd move not to offer the 12gb flash version in the US or Japan, but I am betting we will see that before Black Friday. It would also make sense to see retailers discount the current slim to make room for the new inventory.

Fight on Sony. Don’t listen to the haters Sony. It seems you are think for down the road as usual, at least I hope.

  • Schlocky, shabby, frowzy, tacky, chintzy….

    In other words, CHEAP!

Sony, seriously, who thought that the sliding cover had any sort of cool factor at all when looking at the prototype designs?

I would be embarrassed if people came over to my house and saw such a clunky, ugly piece of tech as the centerpiece of my entertainment center.

How can this even happen?? Just…how???

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwsssssssssssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • for those who continue to believe there has not been a price drop / currently a bundle is 299 they have dropped price 30 bucks, before putting foot in mouth you should pay attention. good grief. they havent even announced a standalone system yet.

  • Whoever designed the disk loader thing was not very bright. It looks like it’s completely unusable when the PS3 is placed in a narrow space (like my entertainment center).

    Just. So. Dumb.

  • Here’s the big question, would I be able to add a bigger HDD?

  • all ps3 have upgradeable hdd, my old fat ps3 already has a 500gb hdd in it, would be silly for them to take that ability from us

  • “Digital Life”?

Give me a freakin’ break. It’s a chunk of electronics on which we game and watch things.

    Transparent promo copy trash.

  • And what did we all actually want in a PS3?

    Processing power! RAM!

Actually being able to run a Bethesda game! Playing something without choking the XMB speed!

  • It would be awesome if they made it with 2-3 TB storage (work as a server) for media and made access available remotely so SEN customers or PS+ Customers can access their media, Movies, Picyures & Music from anywhere in the world in HD / HQ

  • This is fantastic i love the new design. The only question i have is what happens to the price of the current slim models will it stay the same or drop in price?

  • @Maya Butler

I’ve heard rumors that the super slim was to have a faster Blu-ray disc reader, is that true or just plain rumor?

  • @eliyanimoses

This is already possible. Via a usb hub and external drive(s).

Make sure your external drive is FAT32. Other formats are not supported.

Through this ^ arrangement, I currently have 8 usb ports and 5 TB media storage, accessible through my VITA, either through adhoc or a WIFI connection.

  • Interesting though I still have my 60GB PS3 from the original release date lol.

  • At first I was like “OH COME ON! I’M JUST ABOUT TO GET A NEW PS3!”

And then I realized, I probably won’t get it until November, and I was planning on getting the $300 model anyway, so this is actually more for my money.

So, this round goes to you, Sony.

  • I’m gonna say it looks kinda futuristic, with a bit of the past…
I believe that disc drive is from a cd player they built some years ago..
Even the design on top is from said cd player..
the slide was manually moved, then they made it motorized later…

Now they implemented it on the ps3..
    The question is why?

At first they lied and said they were focusing on the ps4, then they said they weren’t working on the ps4.
Then they lied again and said they weren’t working on the ps3 super slim.
Yet here we are talking about the release of the ps3 super slim…
Why must sony lie so much to us?
It’s like they are calling all gaming sites liars…

Anyways it looks ok, but nothing to make people rush out and get…
    Especially with the price hike..
Also why only a 500gb hdd?
You would think after all these years you would have put in a bigger hdd…

  • are there differences on speed on a top-loading vs slot-loading drive? Can Blu-ray handle the speed on a top-loading machine? BTW, the super slim PS3 is HOT! Day one.

  • hey sony. I sold my old ps3 fat today. I hope you have some good bundles with this new system coming this black friday

  • I am confused in the choices made.. I know it has been said but why not have USB ports in the back so we can connect the PS Eye? I do like the look of the device but why have a large capacity drive when that was never an issue with PS3. You can switch drives easily. I have a first Gen PS3 and I wanted to buy another for size reasons. I do not feel this fits what I want in slim PS3 and the price point is too high to entice new buyers.

  • every one is saying how ugly it is! but we all know that as soon as it hits the shelves every one of you will be standing in line . then we can find you on youtube looking like 5 year olds at christmas time doing your unboxing ! I will be right there with you ! lol ! i have a bad habit of needing the latest thing ! i wasn’t looking to upgrade to 500mb but i am now !

  • I really do not recommend it to anyone, it will be a waste of money, just what I did; buying the 3D display, They told about the simulview games coming soon… When is soon? I have been waiting like 10 months, and nothing new… The TV turns off by it own and then turns on. So, first of all this new playstation from where I can see will only be a waste of money, same thing as the other slim one, it isn’t backwards compatible. And with my large experience in playstations systems, the firsts ones will not work properly. I had already 3 playstations 3, and only this last one is working well in this past 2 years, so the decision is yours, and like I always ask to them…
When are you going to develop games with the simulview technology?
    Thank you!

  • Wow is that thing cheap looking and UGLY. Sony shoulda stuck with the PS3 Slim looks and disk drive and just made it a little smaller. This might have been ok if it brought the price down to $199 but nope. Terrrible, bring on PS4.

  • The ridge top looks really bad Sony why make it like that and not mate flat!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh Yeah they come out of white play station 3 slim look at here picture :)
    http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-playstation-3-2012-official-press-shots/

good lucky to anybody need to know better they always heard about white any devices so right sony ps3 would be turn white on the slim lmfao :p

  • glossy plastic finish is a horrible idea… looks pretty cheap & with the price increase can’t say I’ll jump on this. You gotta wonder if Sony will lock down the ability to change out hard drives too with this thing. Was kinda looking forward to this but this announcement is kinda meh..

  • While I liked the shiny black look on the original Playstation 3 it was heavy, then the slim did not have the shiny look I wanted, so I like the look of this PS3. It is a little late though as many people are referring to, but expect Nintendo to come out on top in sales with it’s new system it is still Nintendo. I kind of like the feeling that Sony could have kept the “oRiGiNaL lOOk” of the ps3 aKa “PS3 fat OWNs”.

  • we just don’t no but if you think so yall better sell the old one

  • They Should have Made it Backwards Compatible, My PS2 slim Broke a month back and now i can’t play my old PS2 Games anymore, And i heard that in Japan there’s a External DVD drive for the PS3 and it plays PS2 Games, well that be released in North America, or is Sony Bending us over on that too, Cause I still want too play Playstation 2 games, I miss my Final Fantasy 12 :'(

  • the design looks like a Mid 90s Nissan Supra car which not so much sucks it looks like a 90s car or a 90s power rangers car but the 500gb is cool tho you can change the hard drive anyways but its is smaller and lighter so its Okay for me :)
