TGS 2012: Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled

Tokyo Game Show is always an exciting time for gamers everywhere, as we all look forward to new games and other news being unveiled during the show. This year is no exception. We are always looking for ways to create better experiences for our gamers, and to that end, we just unveiled a smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 at the show.

PlayStation 3

The new PS3 will be available in two different models, with 250GB and 500GB HDDs which will allow you to store even more of your digital life. It also features a smaller, streamlined design that will look great as part of any entertainment system. The new model is approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3.

In order to maintain the superior gaming experiences that you expect from us here at PlayStation, we are always looking for ways to change and evolve with your gaming behavior. You might remember the smaller models that we launched for PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable), and we know that many of you love the opportunity to add these streamlined models to your home. Additionally, as developers continue to release deep and rich digital gaming content, providing an option for larger HDD is essential, especially for games with large DLC packs, and full game downloads, as well as personal entertainment content. The biggest and best games live on PS3 this holiday season, and the new PS3 is the perfect way to play.

We are also excited to announce that the launch of this new PS3 model will include incredible additional value. The 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25th for $269.99 (MSRP) as part of a limited edition bundle featuring UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus digital content for the highly acclaimed digital title, DUST 514. This bundle offers more than $70 in total combined value.

New PlayStation 3 Bundle

The winner of over 60 industry and Game of the Year awards, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception will be re-released next week in an all new Game of the Year Edition, which includes 12 new multiplayer maps, over 40 multiplayer skins, Fort Co-Op Adventure, and Shade Survival Mode, a value of over $45 in bonus content. In case you somehow missed it, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception is the latest installment in Naughty Dog’s storied UNCHARTED franchise that chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake. UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition is a great way to kick off your gameplay experience on the newest PS3 model.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will also be available as a standalone title on September 25th for $39.99 (MSRP).

CCP Games’ DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to PS3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of EVE Online, players wage war in the next generation of first-person shooters, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire of thousands of online gamers. This bundle includes an incredible amount of bonus value – more than $30 in total.

For those of you who do not own a PS3 yet, or have been looking to add another PS3 to your household, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in before the next wave of blockbuster games launch this holiday season.

PlayStation 3

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th in conjunction with the release of Assassin’s Creed III – one of the most anticipated games for this holiday season featuring four exclusive levels, only available on PS3.

  • Wow very nice indeed but would it be available in different colors as well? A nice chrome finish with carbon trimmings well just to say lol… Any other colors????

  • So no disc loader PS3???

  • Does this new model model have a stronger wifi signal?
Have you guys tested this model to see if it can stay on the Web Browser, and Playstation Home for a longer period of time without freezing? (Although I know that it may still freeze at times I’m asking if they are any improvements in this area.)

  • Here’s a question “Maya Butler:, is their going to be a white PS3 model in the US?

  • I have to agree with a lot of other people. It’s a great package, but with the move it would be way more convenient to have a usb on the back.

  • Incredible want one xD add me to play Uncharted 3

  • New model looks sexy, the only question that really begs answering is will it still have issues with overheating? I have the MGS4 LE PS3, had it replaced once, all my friends have slims, they’ve all had those die too…os that fixed? Also top loading disc rather than feeding? Didn’t we learn that was a bad idea already? Wish it the best though, I will continue to replace my current model though if it dies again.

  • should be 99.99$

  • Very smexy design, Sony! But are there any improvements in terms of cooling to prevent YLOD? <–Me being a PS3 60GB FAT owner I have to ask lol.

From the looks of it the only changes are design, size, and hdd capacity? Reading all the comments and your replies I see there's still no hardware backwards compatibility or extra USB ports. What's the source of the price increase?

  • I will not get another PS3 unless Sony gives me the
ability to activate more ps3s. its ridiculous we only get 2 now instead of five. Please take this feedback to the right people.

  • Also, this is too expensive.

  • When Is It Releasing In India & What Will Be Its Cost.

  • I like the new super slim PS3, but I have a couple questions. Does this PS3 model FINALLY have N wireless technology in it? B/G wireless has PATHETIC range. Secondly, why is it that the PS3 has been out for almost 6 years now and a Bluetooth headset and HDMI cable are not included with EVERY system? I am tired of playing online and having to deal with people that are either too cheap or too stupid to buy a headset. I hope this kind of short-sightedness is corrected by the time the PS4 comes out.

  • Wow I’m really digging how it looks! Kind of a bummer that I just got a new slim :( – I would totally snag this puppy, I love it.

  • @259.
Read your own comment, now go stand in the corner.

It doesn’t look horrible, but I see no reason to update for a few more gigs

  • My PS3 just broke for the 5th time, and I’m extremely disappointed to see that Sony has done absolutely nothing to fix the many issues that plague the PS3 hardware. Smaller and lighter? Who cares? Make the thing actually last so I’m not paying $100+ to fix it every 4~6 months, and maybe give your customers back the ability to play their PS2/PS1 titles instead of trying to force everyone to buy digital versions and HD “remakes” of games they already own.

  • This looks great and all but I rather stick with with the slimmer ps3 than the paper thin ps3. I would love to try it especially if it has a better speed when running games downloaded and on disk!

  • I already got ps3 slim 320gb but I might pick me up a 500gb next year. Mostly because I like the look and how you slide it open to put the game in.

  • I THINK IT IS GREAT THAT PLAYSTATION ARE MAKING CONCOLES WITH MORE STORAGE BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE OF US WHO ALREADY OWN A PLAYSTATION. MINE IS I THINK A 250G BUT I STILL CANT DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING I HAVE PURCHASED ON TO IT WITHOUT REMOVING GAMES TO MAKE ROOM………I THINK THE GREAT PPL AT SONY NEED TO COME UP WITH SOME TYPE OF EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE OR SOMETHING BECAUSE I THINK BUYING A WHOLE NEW PLAYSTATION IS BACKWARDS -THANKS

  • Grate a nother ps3. NOW I WILL BE ABLE TO WATE ANOTHER 5 YEARS FOR THE PS4 !!!! YOU SHOULD FIRE YOUR SO CALLED MARKITING MANAGER. U HAVE WASTED A NOTHER YEAR WITH AN OVER PRICED PRODUCKED.

  • NO MORE PS3’s Iam tierd of it, bring out the ps4

  • PS3 Slimer model with a $40 value game for $269 How is price getting higher? And if it is built as well as my fat 160 that I bought for $500 with Uncharted 1. What a good deal.

  • Could use more USB ports! Glad my old school fat boy is still chugging along.

  • It is not clear. But will the new PS3 be upgradable with a new standard 2.3″ HDD, like the old ones are.
Is the 500GB HDD a standard or SSD drive?

That last bit is very important, and downloaded games really do benefit from the lower seek times on an SSD.
Dust514 is said to be especially happy with SSD’s.

  • Three_of_VI, My original 60GB fat is still running nicely as well. Sounds like it is about to take off at times, but it is still running.

  • I don’t know about all of you guys but I’m not ready for the PS4 just yet, This super slim will make the PS3 install base even stronger.

  • THIS WOULD GO GOOD WITH A SOCOM HD/HEADSET BUNDLE!

  • The PS3 Slim Slim looks absolutely horrible. If they were trying to go for the PS2 Slim look plus traditional PS3 curves, they completely failed. The grill lines and the persistent curves make it look totally cheese. The PS2 Slim is still the best looking console Sony has designed to date.

  • I just read Ben Kuchera’s article over at Penny Arcade Reports, and I have to agree with his argument. Sony made a bad move with the pricing of the new PS3. Sure, when you compare the HDD, the power of the system, and other specs, it may technically be a better deal than the 360 or WiiU, but parents and grandparents out shopping in the holiday season won’t do that. They will only be looking at numbers following that dollar sign, and they will see that there’s a model of the 360 for only $199 and there’s a BRAND NEW Nintendo console for $299. That’s a brand new console at the same exact price of a 6 year old console. I think Kuchera said it best, “Sony has all but decided not to compete for 2012’s holiday dollars.”

    http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/new-slimmer-more-expensive-sonys-decision-not-to-compete-this-holiday-seaso

  • @TrapLife724: You can replace the HDD with any standard 2.5″ laptop HDD. The same thing happened to me, so I went out and bought a 750GB. Just make sure you back up your current hard drive to an external so that you don’t lose any information. You’ll have to re-download the games, but the saves should still work.

  • Duh Graphite thats just what I was telling you about. Your late to the party but congratulations for showing up. Oh and btw did you even stop to think what this piece of sony propriety hardwares real purpose is on the flash based model? its the same as any other piece of propreitary hardware. That is locking every purchaser into brand specific hardware at much higher costs. If you still not seeing it take a look back to the vita or psp and their propreitary memory cards and compare prices to SD cards of equivalent size. Really dude you sound like an amateur marketing intern.

  • I’m really happy that everyone thinks Sony is raising the price…Do any of you see that it says bundle???

  • They’re not really raising the price, they’re just not passing along the savings of making a smaller, lighter system to the consumers.

  • Interesting design. I really wish you guys would’ve put more USB ports on the front and brought back the card readers. I don’t mind the little extra adapter I had to purchase though. Looks kinda cool. Not sure if I’m into it though.

  • Also, they’re not pricing very competitively for the holiday season. The starting 360 model sells for $199. The brand new Wii U is $299. The 6 year old, but slightly smaller and lighter PS3 is also $299. Parents and grandparents, who usually don’t look at specs and only care about price, will either go for the cheaper system or the brand new system.

  • There is always going to be a price difference between a standalone console and a bundle deal. Until they announce the official pricing for just the system, you will not know if they are passing along any savings or if they are saving at all.

  • @269…you could upgrade your internal HDD at anytime. But instead of researching to see how to do it, you decided that it would be better to complain with all capslock, you stupid fool.

This new design would be cool if you simply added one usb port to the back of the system for the ps-eye.
Or you could have added a USB 3.0 slot. Instead there is no reason to buy this unless you have a phat ps3 and are sick of hearing it all the time.

As for including an HDMI cable….why would they do that? You can easily purchase an HDMI cord or a bluetooth headset on your own….why force people to pay more money for items they already own, or do not want?

It is amazing to see these pathetic people complain about nothing.

Oh and comparing the WiiU to the PS3, really people? Yeah, go buy a wiiU and stop wasting our time.

  • im wondering why sony lol. this looks cool and all but i recently got a 20 gig used ps3 and upgraded the hdd to 500 gigs, wont be getting a new one anytime soon. also does this mean that the ps4 is around the corner?

  • are the bundles going to be sold on Amazon as well? I’m waiting for the AC3 Bundle to show up.

  • Not impressed -_-

  • Looks great, but as I don’t have any siblings, I will not be getting a second or upgrade my current. Also why make another console? You already had the Slim model. Unless it’s trying to be the next PSP… Wait, I guess since this makes it console #3 it kinda is.

Storage…. here we go again release the smaller one in a bundle, shaft the buyers of the 500GB. I’ll take my old original one I can install as large a hdd in it I want thank you.

I don’t see how it’ll help install base, but good luck. I’m waiting on the PS4.

  • Hey look, another way for you to make money on an outdated piece of equipment.

  • Personally I’m happy that they made the new model. Currently I have a slim but I’ve run out of space to download anything so getting the bigger HDD is awesome plus the redesign looks kinda cool. I’m not overly excited about the lid option to put a disc in but it still works. All things said good job Sony

  • Will this bundle be availible at all gamestops the 25th? I tried to preorder one today and they only had the 500gig assassins creed bundle in their system.

  • Let’s see what we have here…

    Same cell processor

    Same amount of ram

    Slightly increased hd

    STILL NO WIRELESS N SUPPORT

Cheaper to manufactue slide out disk tray

    = Fail!

Smaller & Lighter isn’t a benefit on a something that’s not considered a “portable” device.

  • I am very fortunate to own one of the original 4 USB port, 60GB PS3…that is backwards compatible, and that would make it 5 years old….Thank You Sony for putting together a system that is good, but also durable…one day I will move up, but until than….just happy!!!!

  • Correction: 80GB PS3 systems!!!

  • @292 … i agree with you 130%

just another way to rob consumers out of money, there is no point in the same gen console to be made again slimmer or not
your doing what apple does… come out with prat. the same product with a 2% different shape and charge the same if not MORE for it
    shame on you sony…

  • come on man, still only one color? the controllers come in a variety of colors. great job………… not

  • They changed the size, weight, and put a bigger hard drive in it. Did they improve anything else?

Is there a USB port in the back. (For those that use the move this would be handy or is the Move getting shelved.

Has the wireless been unproved at all (last time I checked the PS3 only has a B class wireless. For those that don’t want to run a cord around the house this might be useful.

Have they improved the possessor in the device? Loading games faster might name it worth buying the new PS3.
