PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on PS Vita

Hello PlayStation fans! My name is Daryl Allison, Sr. Producer at Bluepoint Games, developers of the PlayStation Vita version of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Since Sony’s announcement at Gamescom of their awesome promotion pricing program for PlayStation All-Stars – where gamers who purchase the PlayStation 3 version also get to download the PS Vita version at no additional cost – it has been great to see gamers getting excited for the PS Vita version, so it’s time Bluepoint gets into the blogging ring.

As fans of Bluepoint know, the studio has worked hard over the years to give gamers the highest quality remasters for classic titles God of War, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, and Metal Gear Solid. Now, for PlayStation All-Stars, we’ve taken our passion to the next level. Our mission: To create the full PS3 experience of PlayStation All-Stars on PS Vita.

By that, we don’t mean a game with similar features carrying the same name. PlayStation All-Stars is about showcasing the possibility of true Cross-Play between PS3 and PS Vita. The feature richness of the PS3 version’s arcade mode, online modes, player progression system and its unlockables and customization, etc… it’s all here on PS Vita. The connectivity and gameplay is a frame-perfect, seamless experience.

The only separation between the versions is where players choose to play, not which platform. Four friends can get together with four PS Vitas and battle via an ad hoc connection. You and a friend can grab your PS Vitas, team up online and compete against everyone else playing from their PS3s or PS Vitas. Or bring your PS Vita over to a friend’s house, and while three of them elbow each other and mess with each other’s controllers on the couch, you can lounge anywhere you want, playing against them with a handheld screen all your own. SuperBot serves up PlayStation All-Stars on the PS3 and Bluepoint makes it feel like the PS Vita was always its home. You’ll set down your Dual Shock, pick up your PS Vita, wonder how the PS3 squeezed into it, and continue your progression up the leaderboards.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on PS Vita

It’s been awesome watching the R&D behind recreating the PS3 version’s high-quality graphics on the PS Vita. We could not settle for a reduced graphical experience – no one should! – so we set off on a journey of crazy problem solving for each character, environment and effect. Bringing the very best out of this portable platform has led our team at Bluepoint to hit back with a combo of high-end math and old-school dev tricks. It hasn’t been easy, but we’re doing it, and all with the game blazing at 60 frames per second. PlayStation All-Stars makes you believe that with PS Vita you have a PS3 in the palm of your hand.

It’s one thing for the graphics to impress. It’s another to ensure the PS Vita provides the genuine experience for fighting game fans. We regularly grab raw HD data and 240 FPS video to check that input latency, rendering fidelity and “the awesome” remains tight. Running at 60 FPS is as much for the smoothness of the graphics as for the controls. It’s important that there are no advantages (or disadvantages) due to the different hardware – no network lag, no input lag, so PlayStation All-Stars on PS Vita must be — and is — tuned to have the same tight gameplay responsiveness. From button press to character action, the quality of fighting is upheld to PS3 standards. We also take advantage of both SuperBot and PlayStation being in California – Bluepoint is in Austin, Texas – working with them to tune network code and optimize bandwidth, to deliver the best possible online experience.

There’s much more cool stuff to talk about, but for now, get ready to take the PS3 PlayStation All-Stars experience on the road. As we do not endorse driving while brawling, we recommend you find yourself a designated driver… then have them find the nearest gaming retailer, insist they buy a PS Vita, and kick their butt.

  • When will more character be revealed?

  • Putting a PS3 on a vita is a hard enough task alone.
But getting it at 60fps is just outstanding! Great Job! I commend you for doing something than many still to this day have problems with.

I can’t wait to get my hands on PS All-Stars later this year!

    • Thank you. It has been a challenge and it’s been a career highlight working with these guys. Still some work to go. There are few graphically intense cases that we are working our way through, but the future looks bright at 60FPS.

  • @Daryl

Why don’t you guys at Bluepoint use your talents at porting to Boarderlands 2 to Vita?!? Randy Pitchford at Gearbox would be happy to give you the keys to unlocking this treasure!

  • Oops, I meant: Borderlands 2 (typo)

  • From what I’ve played of PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale in the vita it looks and plays amazing great job guys give yourself a pat in the back :-)

    • Thanks! The two co-owners and amazing engineers, Andy O’Neil and Marco Thrush, are sitting next to me right now. I just patted them on the back for you. I’ll be sure to walk around and ensure everyone else takes a moment to read through these comments as well.

  • I just got in the beta for this on Vita. I can’t wait for launch day to have some fun cross-play with my buddies.

  • i’m in houston, any job openings at bluepoint? lol

  • Well i’ve downloaded the PASBR cross platform play demo on my vita today and all i can say is that everything you just mentioned on this post Daryl is completely spot on, i wasnt sure if i was gonna buy PASBR but 5 matches on my psvita and the game went from ” Not Sure ” to ” Pre order today”, im totally impressed about almost everything, the graphics are really good, the gameplay feels just like the ps3 version, heck i find the psvita version to be even more fun than the ps3 version for some reason lol so with that said you guys have 2 copies sold, one for me and one for my nephew.

    • Awesome, be sure to spread the good word. More people need to see how great the PS Vita really is. If they don’t already have one, All-Stars is an obvious reason to buy one, right?

  • oh psvita owners go to the official PASBR website and sign up for updates maybe you get into the beta.

  • I’ve got to agree with remanutd5, I got into the Vita beta last night and it’s sold me on this game finally. I’ve been in the PS3 beta for a while, and wasn’t quite feeling it, but the fact that this is running SO WELL on the Vita impresses me, and for some reason I just had more fun playing on the Vita. Keep up the good work!

    • Thanks! This private beta shows the PS Vita’s progress as much as progress for the overall project. Those who have participated in the previous private betas will see improvements on the PS3 side as well.

  • woot just got the beta for both ps3 and vita. cant wait to try it out and of course really cant wait till it release!!

  • :3… I want in on the beta guys! Especially for the Vita. Curious question, what do you guys use as your primary programming language? Unfortunately, the language for the Mobile sweet is C# :(. I was wondering if you guys were provided the same cards rather than C and C++?

  • My Vita is ready. Hope I get in to the Beta. Fingers crossed.

  • @3 Totally agree. Borderlands 2 on the PSV would be nothing short of amazing. Especially if it had Cross-Play/Cross-Buy. Instabuy!

This is looking really good and I’m a big fan of BluePoint and their work. Seeing that you guys did Metal Gear for the PSV, I’m really curious if you’re in charge of Zone of Enders HD for PSV.

Looking forward to this title. Keep up the great work.

    • While Bluepoint brought the MGS HD Collection to PS3 and PSN, our developer friends across the hallway, Armature Studio, get credit for bringing it to the PS Vita. Zone of Enders is not a Bluepoint project. We’ve been hard at work over the last year focused on All-Stars.

  • oh and sony i expect the same quality cross play from Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal Assault, Sly Cooper Thieves in Time and all cross platform play games because SuperBot and Bluepoint are setting the standards as i think Guerrila Games will set up the standard on the FPS genre on the little system when Killzone Mercenary comes out.

  • Got the beta code. Will download when I get home. Mom took my Vita….she’ll give it back tomorrow

  • thats impressive! i didnt even know Bluepoint was in Austin :) Hello neighbor :) cannot wait for both versions!

  • The way TGS is going currently though, I’m really starting to give up on Vita. SONY has made the holiday lineup great but 2013 looks so barren with the exception of Sly and Soul Sacrifice

  • WHY DIDN’T I SIGN UP FOR THE BETA??!! oh now I’m sad…..but happy for you guys…mainly for your work on the MGS HD collection.

  • where are yall getting the beta for the vita at? i had the ps3 beta, but i wanna play the vita version

  • @19 how are you even commenting on 2013..and all we really know about is 2 games. be patient

  • where’s the Final Fantasy characters?

  • @23, the Final Fantasy characters are in Dissidia Final Fantasy, no need for them here. They’d be a wasted roster space.

  • how are the betas being sent out? i have a ps vita and ps+…were they all sent out already

  • Great job on the Vita version, Bluepoint! I was gonna get both before the Cross Buy announcement but it makes things even better for me. Can’t wait to have PSASBR Vita tournaments at school.

Also, Bluepoint, since you guys have mastered the Vita, why don’t you guys help Gearbox port Borderlands 2 on Vita. Randy said they need help from a studio with Vita experience and I’m sure that you guys would do a great job. It would also sell a ton of Vitas.

  • I am so excited for this game. Especially since I can get it for my Vita. My only question is, do we have to download the PS3 version from PS Store to get the PS Vita version for free? Or does the physical copy of the game come with a code to download the PS Vita copy. I’ve always preferred the physical copy, but I’d rather have it for both my systems if its the same price.

    • Cross Buy works for retail as well as digitally. Those who purchase the PS3 version at retail or on PSN will receive a digital download for the PS Vita version at no additional cost.

  • You guys did an amazing job~! Current beta tester (just got my beta key for psvita ) and I gatta say I am really impressed!!!! Def a buy (ON PSVITA! ) 40$ well spent on a pre order!

  • I’ve been playing it on my Vita, and I hope you guys make an alternate way to do the supers because I always have to constantly mash L+R just so I can pull it off. It’s very frustrating because timing is everything when it comes to supers and having it not execute when you intend to sucks. It should just be the combination of L+R regardless of whether they’re pressed simultaneously or not. As if L was the shift button and you press R to do your super vice versa.

  • How do I buy the PS3 version which will include PS-Vita version? Is it all versions or I have to pre-order from certain place? Can we just buy digital version for PS3 via the PSN and get Vita version as well?

I would love to have this game digital on both PS3 and Vita. Multi player games that get played frequently belong on the HDD.

    • As mentioned in my reply @27, buying the PS3 version via PSN is one way to take advantage of Cross Buy, enabling you to also download the PS Vita version.

  • I paid off my 2 copy’s (PsVita/PS3) just gotta wait for the sweet wonderful day it comes out!! I feel like I need to buy 2 more for my wife just for her PS3/Vita, even tho there is a downloadable version. If I had more memory on my Vita I would go for it

  • Alright so GameStop still doesn’t mention specifically that you will also get PS-Vita version of game for digital download focusing their pre-order bonus description to just costumes.

But Amazon how has both costumes and specifically says PS-Vita version of game digital download included under the pre-order bonus description. SOLD

  • I don’t know if you guys can answer yet, but about how big will the download be for the Vita version? I have an 8gig stick, but room is tight.

You don’t have to give an exact number, but are you expecting it to exceed 1GB?

  • I can’t wait to pick up this game. This has been such a fun year in gaming, for both PS3 and PS Vita. Sackboy is in 3 games, Nariko has returned, Remote Play is awesome with God of War and Ico… I could go on and on.

    • “Remote Play is awesome with God of War and Ico.” Two other Vita achievements this year from Bluepoint. You can trust Superbot’s game, PlayStation All-Stars, is in good hands.

  • I also just received an invite to the Cross-play Beta for this game. I have no doubt I’m gonna have one HELL of a blast with this game; thanks Sony for the invite, and another thanks to Bluepoint for taking on the development job for the Vita version. :D

    • …and thanks to Superbot for making the game that makes all this possible in the first place. It’s been a heck of a challenge for us making this happen on the Vita, but very gratifying to see everyone’s praise and appreciation. Thank you all!

  • Im playing the beta now…i gotta admit you guys were telling the truth about no imput nor network lag i played on my ps3 then my vita and i couldnt tell the difference in fact the cross play is so perfect i didnt know i was playing ps3 users when i was on my vita. my only issue is 1time we did a battle and i chose sweet tooth but it gave everyone kratos? other than that MARVELOUS JOB GUYZ!!!

    • Thanks! As much as we wanted the private beta to be PERFECT, it is a beta after all. We still have some kinks to work out before the final version. Great to hear you too feel the experience of a “PS3 in your hands”. We want the best for All-Stars, nothing less.

  • P.S: Can we have info on what happened to “WARRIOR’S LAIR / RUIN” ps vita game ? This was the game that made me sold on the VITA … Hope it’S not canned or i’ll be a sad puppy o_O.

On subjet : Looks great. Will probably get the cross buy option for this if the demo is to my liking, which will most likely be, but then then every car looks good before a test-drive … right!

  • Hey now… aww man… I need that PAS:BR for the Ps Vita beta STAT!! Great game!!

  • If you purchase the physical copy do you also get the ps vita one for free also?

  • My friends at Bluepoint, you all are awesome. First, let me say how awesome it would be for you guys to put Borderlands 2 on Vita. I couldn’t think of a better team, although it’s unlikely to ever happen lol.

Now, let me ask this, although I’m not expecting a good answer: is the game in native resolution on the Vita?

  • can you please give me a beta code? :) lol
But seriously great job guys keep up the good work!!

  • Not expecting a good answer? Would you settle for the answer you’re hoping for? Yes, the game is running at native resolution on the Vita; no up-scaling, no cheating to achieve 60 FPS.

  • I do I get into the Beta? Being a PS Plus member should get me a code right?

  • This game looks amazing. I’m in Canada, thought that might net be a better chance of getting in the beta, but apparently not. Really want to try this out. I don’t actually own a ps3, the Vita version of all stars is going to be the only version I own, so it’s great to here that it’s every bit as good. We need more titles like this on the Vita, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

  • I just wanted to share how amazing it is you guys have accomplished this. It has always been a dream to be able to take your console experience on the go and now it is finally being realized on a true multiplayer scale. I’m looking forward to the great things other developers start to learn from you guys because it is abundantly clear that you are the ones setting the bar.

I for one appreciate it, recognize it, and like many others here can’t thank you enough for all the work you guys are doing to create a truly awesome experience for all of us.

I’ve already pre-ordered the PS3 version so I’m excited for my free Vita version. But I’m also getting two additional Vita versions for my little bro and sis! Crossing my fingers that I get into the Crossplay Beta. The previous beta was fantastic and I can’t wait to see Fat Princess on the little screen!

    • Thanks again and I’ll continue to share the praise. Sony built the hardware and put their muscle behind the initiative with their SCE Santa Monica Studio leading the charge. Mobile multiplayer gaming at this quality and scale is absolutely possible and it is about to be realized.

@Aceun, you’ve raised the bar. Future owner of three Vita copies. Who can top that?

  • THANX for all the responses daryl btw im still playing the beta and its still amazing on both systems…in fact its the only reason i didnt trade in my vita..the roster is awesome as well i know a few ppl are upset about crash but there are legal issues with that im hoping there will be a tag-team mode..and the dlc im sure will be on point like donte retro as dlc would sell im sure great job B.P

    • You’re welcome – doing what I can! You are all getting behind the game and taking the time to comment, the least I can do is take some time jump in, say thanks and try to answer some questions.

  • Dear god Bluepoint, you guys don’t cease to amaze me. Your HD remakes are phenomenal and I’m also a proud Beta tester and all I can say is WOW!!!! The Vita version is so smooth, I think I might even like it a bit more than the PS3 version for some reason. The downside is I got my code the same day I received my LBP Vita pre-order so I don’t know which game to play! What do you suggest???? Lol :)

    • I don’t know. Maybe I’m biased, but I might be partial to the game Bluepoint was part of. Just sayin’. Although, I think there are health warnings about taking 15 minute breaks between long gaming sessions. Does taking a break from one and switching to the other count?

  • Oh darn Bluepoint, you guys are just too good to us.

  • now these are the type of games for ps vita
