PS3 System Software Update (v4.30)

Next Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.

PS Vita Trophies on PS3

By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Please note, the games shown in the picture above are examples, and do not represent existing PS3 or PS Vita games.

  • YES YES Finally!

  • I hope they change it so that a game isn’t listed as <100% simply because you don't have the DLC. For example, it should say in the trophy list:

    Uncharted 3: 100%
    Uncharted 3 DLC: 0%

and really it should only show the DLC in the list if you've downloaded any DLC for that game. I know you can separate the main game and DLC AFTER you click the game title, but it's just not the same thing.

  • I would like to keep the Folding @ Home app, maybe as a separate download from Life with Playstation? I have two PS3’s, one for my office, and one for the family room. Since I only occasionally use the one in my office I leave it doing Folding at Home. I would like to keep folding at home in some fashion.

Another question, if we don’t do the update will Folding at Home still be available? Or will the clients just stop working?

  • @22: I don’t know, maybe you should read the friggin’ article instead trying to act like YOUR OPINION somehow dictates REALITY, because it doesn’t.

“We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date”

  • When will you guys make so I can see if my friends are on vita from the ps3 friends list? Would be helpful for when psasbr comes out next month so I can see who is playing on which system!

  • Oh, and I do not like that you’re moving the Trophy lists. I liked it where it was.

And will it actually remember where we left the view now? I’d take it being moved for that benefit. I hate trying to go for trophies and needing to refind them all the time. Easier to just use my PS Vita, but that doesn’t display unlocked ones until you sync which takes forever on PS3.

  • @Eric
Is the ability to sync individual games added >< I hate taking my game to a friends place, playing on his PS3 and then having the application fail after waiting 90 minutes for a sync of a trophy i earned. Yes something is wrong with that picture, but most of that data is the system in question trying to do a complete sync which is unnecessary.

  • I’d like it if they allowed you to ether delete games with 0%, or at least hide them. Like select a a trophy list then sort it into a thing to hold the lists for all the games you don’t play. You and everyone can still see if you choose them, but there hidden from the ones you want on display the most.

  • What a poor update, It seems that all your updates are Sony is about taking things away, you guys took the IOS away. How many Ps3s and Psps you have on 1 account less.Follow the Xbox way and add things, Don’t take away By the way I hate if you download a big demo say about 2,000 Mb on the Ps3 it takes 1 hour on my connotation,And on the same connotation same MB on the Xbox takes the Xbox 15 mins and anyone says this is not true you have never played a Xbox .I have tried this same download test at many friends houses.

  • If your contract with folding @ home expired can you leave Life with Playstation as an option without the Folding @ Home feature?

  • And when will the adding funds to wallet with credit card will work?

  • glad to see Sony putting more focus on interface, updating the XMB here and hopefully getting the store update out soon too. Still hoping to see features and connectivity improved though (Blur and Uncharted are the only games I’ve seen that use Facebook. so much potential there)

  • Awesome update. I too would like to be able to delete games that I’ve hardly played and have 0 (or very few) trophies. It’s probably my most wanted feature!

  • Will we be able to delete/hide unwanted trophies now?

  • Great update, But u guys for sure need a update for the vita and ps3 internet browser! that’s about it…

    Back to doom 3…Ps3 rocks

  • Also I have to say I like how you guys are updating things like the Psn store you should make the download list by category like add ons, demos, games, themes and avatars.

  • Aw man, I did like Life with Playstation. I hope theres some kind of new app in store for the PS3 in the near future that is a similar experience…

  • Some progress at least… hopefully the next update allows PS3 users to see PS Vita users online. I am hoping that the PS Vita has a dashboard update and a overhaul for the Near app, but please finish the PSP support and PSP DLC support for PS Vita.

  • While I’ll like an update to the trophies, I really don’t want them to not be under games.

  • The real question is when will i be able to be seen playing a Vita game and my friend’s list can see that i am actually playing a Vita game rather than either appearing offline, at the bottom of my friend’s friend’s list or completely non-existent on their friend’s list until i sign back in to PSN using my ps3!

  • HTML5 support for PS Vita and being able to upgrade from sub account to master account would be great things to add also.

  • Oh and I have to agree checking the trophies should be under games not PSN.

  • We should be able to delete any game trophies we want on the list, not just the ones with 0%.

There are games that we just want to forget completely about them. Come on SCEA guys, don’t tell me you have never felt that way too whenever you have a look at your trophy collection.

  • If background updates for patches or firmware updates are not possible for both PS Vita and PS3 then at least put an Update section on PSN where we can set to download all the patches and have them install.

  • Effing finally! Is this gonna fix the FRIENDS LIST issue where when I am online on the Vita it doesn’t tell my PS3 friends what I’m playing…. or that I am even ONLINE!? My name loads indefinitely at the bottom of the list of friends.

  • I want the Black XMB default background color back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Also, trophies are not a PSN feature, PSN is not actually required for obtaining trophies (offline, they obviously cannot be synced online though), why are they being moved to the PSN section? I guess either way it’s whatever, trophies are a massive identifier to your PSN account though, lol whatev.

  • I like this update, but I don’t get why the trophies are moving to another section of the XMB. I would also like for the update to include and show when user is playing a vita game, it shows on the PS3, just like how when I am playing the Vita, it shows the PS3 users playing their PS3 game……

  • Lastly, I’m really sad to see Folding@Home go, I remember that making the national news when it launched on PS3 =)

@75 – Choose the dark blue background then make the background brightness at its lowest and boom, you have a black background!

  • there should be an update for those of us who can´t get near to work…
    ;)

  • i like the idea from number 51 it seems that DLC trophies shouldn’t combined with the full game and as for 0% trophies that no one play games to achieve on needs to go because there are games that no one plays or likes to add as a trophy collection so Sony please find a way to remove games with 0% on the server and from the list oh and one last thing now vita has friends of friends list that was not available on PS3 that should be added to the ps3 next update and you haven’t had system stability and vulnerability with PS3 system in a long time in terms of network and system itself that should be addressed or improve the performance at least. Thank You!

  • I’d like to point out something that no one else has, at least here in these comments:

I noticed that once installed, the trophy list cannot be displayed in another language. For example, if I change the PS3′ system language to spanish, the trophies that were previously installed while the system was in english will show in english, not in spanish. I think it would be nice if the trophies always display in the current system’s language.

I always use my PS3 in english, but I share it with people who uses it in spanish. It happened to me twice that I got home with a new game, installed it (trophies included), and then noticed that the system was configured to be in spanish, so now I’m stuck with those trophies in spanish despite me using the system in english.

I don’t know if this happens usually to other gamers, but still I think it would be a nice option to have!

    Please reply!!!

  • What are these games in the image???

  • Save Folding@home! I used the app almost every night, it was fun to mess around with and watch old trailers. I was also on the One of Swords Folding team. Dan will probably be sad to hear about this. I would leave Life with Playstation on when I was working on homework and stuff. Sad to see it go.

Leaving my PS3 on all day tomorrow.

  • Those are all fake titles listed above everyone.

  • Travel The Solar System?!?! YES PLEASE THAT IS AWESOME!!!!

  • i still think you need to do more with the trophy and friend section at least update it like your doing the PS store it looks to plain and to 2001 and let it look more appealing add true integration with Google +,twitter and Facebook it would be cool if you could record game play in real time and upload it you tube HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!come on Sony i thought it does everything !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sounds good, folding@home was nice. Now how about we get an additional option to sort downloaded games by DEMOS when you press triangle, to go along with creation date up, creation date down & recently played.

  • I don’t want to see Folding@home go! I leave it on almost every night, and listen to music, I feel like people can contribute to something great with it!

  • Woo Hoo thank you Sony. I was starting to think you would never patch trophy support onto PS3, which would be stupid.

  • about time, been waiting 4ever 4 this

  • Really sad about Folding@Home. I wonder why the decision was made to remove it. Perhaps we could have another story about this? I’m interested in learning WHY. Was it taking up too much bandwidth? Was it no longer needed? What was the motivating factor to remove it?

The trophy change sounds good, though.

  • I remember life with playstation when it was only folding@home… Man i’m gonna miss you.

  • Will we be able to see the online status of Vita players on the PlayStation 3 as well as what game they are playing?

  • The removal of Folding@Home support has me baffled. The post even talks about how successful it has been, how much good it has done for Alzheimer’s research and how important the PS3 has been to it. So based on that, you decide to end it? What’s the matter, all the good it was bringing to the world conflicted with Sony’s desire to bring evil? I really don’t get where this company is headed.

  • Thanks a lot for all your hard work!

  • That cool, never used the folding, so not gonna really be a big deal to me.

Still need to see vita players online, put “Ps Vita(Name of app/game)” under the name on the ps3.

Old complaint but cross gamd chat, you guys ever thought of dumbing down the XMB during gameplay. like
only show the options in the xmb that you can do during that games playing. You know to help reserve Ram for the game itself or for cross game chat?

  • cool quick question why no more updates to the psp system

  • Oh wow, Folding@Home is ending? Man, end of an era right there. I remember when that was a bullet point that Sony fanboys could tout: “PS3 cures cancer.”

…and I guess the trophy thing is neat.

  • Love the update although I think there should be some strong reconsidering of Folding@home. It’s a great standby app, if something about folding@home didnt work out find a alternative to it.
