Corpse Party: Book of Shadows Coming This Winter, Corpse Party Sale Tomorrow

Corpse Party for PSP

Corpse Party on PSP. What more can you say about it? In my previous PlayStation.Blog entries, I’ve likened it to horror classics such as Clock Tower and Fatal Frame. I’ve talked about how it’s one of the creepiest, most effective horror games I’ve ever played, and how its unique visuals, its 3D binaural audio and its storytelling methods help give it an uncomfortable, unforgettable atmosphere. And you, fair players… you agreed with me. You played it late at night with headphones on, just as I suggested, and it kept you awake. It haunted your nightmares and made you jump every time your house creaked or your neighbor’s kids smacked the wall… until you realized, wait a minute, I don’t have any neighbors!

And then you were never heard from again…Presumably because you were too busy getting every wrong end in the game, of course. It’s hard to resist the charm of those horrible, horrible deaths, after all! Call it morbid curiosity if you will, but we all know you, like Morishige, get a certain sadistic thrill out of seeing (or, more often, hearing) these characters you’ve come to know and love get killed, slowly, in the most creatively twisted ways imaginable.

But then, some of you reading this might not have the slightest idea what I’m talking about, because you’ve committed the ultimate sin of never having played Corpse Party. Well, fear not! You can make up for it on the cheap, since Corpse Party will be available on the North American PlayStation Store for $9.99 – half off its regular price! – from tomorrow’s Store update until two updates later on November 6th.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows Coming This Winter, Corpse Party Sale Tomorrow

But wait, there’s more! Not only is Corpse Party cheaper than ever, its sequel Corpse Party: Book of Shadows has officially been announced for digital release on PSP in North America this winter (with a European release planned for sometime shortly thereafter). So you’d best get familiar with the denizens of Heavenly Host Elementary School now, as they’re going to be coming back full-force in a just a few short months!

…Ah, Corpse Party: Book of Shadows. I’ve been translating that game for the last couple months, and I have to say, it is one hell of a sequel. It’s divided into eight chapters, each of which tells its own self-contained short story. Some of them help fill in the blanks of what happened during crucial off-camera scenes from the original game. Others go into the back-story of various characters, helping to flesh them out and make their roles in the series mythos a bit clearer. Still others ask “what if?,” presenting an alternate version of events from the first game in which characters who previously died are kept alive and given a fleeting chance to stay that way. And the game’s wonderfully-titled final chapter, “Blood Drive,” serves as a true sequel, focusing on two of the first game’s survivors as they venture somewhere even deadlier than Heavenly Host Elementary School in order to dig up some answers.

The whole game is presented in a first-person point-and-click adventure game style, and is much heavier on dialogue- and narrative-driven cutscenes than its predecessor (even venturing into visual novel territory at times). The spooky atmosphere is as thick as ever, though, and the gameplay is aided by fast-forward and message log features, as well as the ability to open the menu and save at absolutely any time (even during cutscenes).

Fans of the first game are virtually guaranteed to love Corpse Party: Book of Shadows, and fans of survival horror and horror fiction in general (especially Japanese horror) who haven’t already given this series a try are strongly encouraged to do so, since it really is among the best at what it does.

Specific information on pricing and release timing will be available in the coming months… and in the meantime, that first Corpse Party is calling your name, quietly and mournfully, in the voice of a child. A dead child. And how can you possibly ignore the voice of a dead child?
How, indeed…

  • Yes! will be buying the first one soon as the store’s up!

    • SCORE! Thanks! This is Jess @ XSEED, btw. I will be filling in for Tom while he’s away, so on his behalf… YAY!

  • So the gameplay isnt like the first game? its different? ….. jumm 9.99 for the first one is a good deal i might get it :) been wanting to give this game a try

    • A bit different. This one is more like an action-adventure with point-and-click exploration and a bigger focus on story bits. Why not grab that first one (how can you not when it’s $9.99?) and see if it hooks you? :)

      -Jess

  • Nice to see the sequel is coming state side. Though I do hope your translation isn’t as liberal as the original was. I had to stop playing the NA release and pick up the original JP version due to the audio not matching with the dialogue in so many scenes. Still a great game either way though. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in an old school style adventure / horror game.

    • Well, Corpse Party is Tom’s baby, and he put a lot of care into it, so I wouldn’t worry. His lines can be very colorful, but they’re always in spirit with the text.

      -Jess

  • This excites me a great deal! I’ll be buying the first one, for sure. I missed out on owning a PSP, and will be getting a Vita on the 30th. This digital download will definitely work on Vita, correct?

  • Might have to give Corpse Party a shot. I always thought Corpse Party looked cool. And at 9.99 that’s enticing me even more!

Burning question: Will Book of Shadows be Vita compatible?

    • It is our desire to make it so. :) Corpse Party is Vita compatible, so we’re looking to keep that trend. <–be enticed!

      -Jess

  • yes!!! thank you xseed… first Last story (which I still need to buy a Wii for) now this… even though I only played teh first chapter of corpse party Im still getting this… cant wait…

also since gameplay is “different” will there be more action? cause CP1 was mainly just walking around, talking and solving puzzles… will there be any “action” this time around?

    • It’s actually more focused on story. Exploring and searching is done through point-and-click type controls, so it’s a bit different than the first game. You won’t want to miss what happens in it, though…

      -Jess

  • any chance we’ll get the Anthology birthday spin off? (probably not since its a spin off and labled as romantic comedy instead of horror)

    • We’ll have to see how this one does, I suppose. We never rule anything out, but I have no news on that front for you, I’m afraid.

      -Jess

  • I just finished the first game less than a week ago. I love it so much. Price doesn’t matter. I’m definitely getting this game. I’m so excited for the sequel. Thank you XSeed!

    • Hurray! $1,000,000 price point confirmed!

      (…just kidding)

Thanks for picking it up, and we’re really happy you liked it. I think you’ll find the sequel quite intriguing since you enjoyed the first one. ^_^

  • Aw, really wish this was coming out next Tuesday; a perfect Halloween game! But regardless, I’m super stoked for this. I remember buying the original Corpse Party on a whim and having it scare the crap out of me.

Thanks for bringing games like this over to the West!

    • Halloween would have been sweet, but we’re only human (mostly). Can’t wait to see what you think of BoS. Holiday cheer, indeed. ;)

      -Jess

  • I’ve been waiting for this game to go on Sale since the day the Vita came out.

  • Keep loving those handhelds, XSEED, and I will keep loving you. ♥

    • Our love for the PSP is like the insatiable pull of a black hole’s celestial embrace. Eternal, inescapable, squishy when it comes to planets and binary stars.

      -Jess

  • we want Book of Shadows AVATARS !!

  • @BlaqMagiq24 – Yes it is Vita compatible, I played through the whole thing on Vita. Although IF you do get it, you really NEED headphones. This game is so much better with them on! I played through the whole game without realizing that, then went back and understood what I was missing lol.

Anyway, I really hope Xseed picks up Corpse Party 2 as well! The Book of Shadows release is great news, and I will definitely buy it day one to support Xseed. I really hope it sells well enough to warrant their localization of the second game. :]

  • looks very good any word for discounts?
    for us ps+ members?
    FREE? MAYBE!
DISCOUNTS? PLEASE NEED TO KNOW THANKS!
TOM PLEASE NEED TO KNOW ALSO ANY WORD ON A PRICE!
    THANKS PLEASE RESPOND THANKS!

    • Corpse Party is on sale tomorrow, and it’s a pretty steep discount. ;)

No price yet for CP: BoS, but we’ll post as soon as we’ve set it, so stay tuned.

      -Jess

  • I just got finished reading the drop and thought that thankfully there was nothing I had to buy this week. Then I read this post. 4 week no purchase streak over. Thanks xSeed :)

  • Would love nothing more than to play both of them. Problem is the psp -_- don’t care for handheld.

    • It works great for Corpse Party, though! The PSP also has a way to cable out and display on a TV, so if you don’t like the small screen, there’s that. As horror games go, I don’t think you’ll want to miss this one…

      -Jess

  • PSP lol. Just kill it off already. Vita is where it’s at. The sooner Sony discontinue that obsolete machine and developers devote their attention to the Vita the better.

    • But there are so many great games for the PSP, plus they can be available on Vita digitally! More games is never a bad thing.

      -Jess

  • Please forgive me as I lose all self control in favor of pure fanboyism….

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! XSEED please have my illegitimate love child as I’ve been needing this game for quite some time now. I always played in the dark, in my basement, with headphones at 12am while going through this game. Awesome.

    さちこさんたち来て!俺は生きたいから、接待負けないよ!

Also, will this be on vita?

    • Tom isn’t here, but I’m sure he would want to go on a date first before bearing your illegitimate love child. He also like chocolates and figurines, so best to start wooing him from there.

      -Jess

P.S. We definitely want it on Vita, so that’s what we’re shooting for. ^_^

  • This is good news! =D

  • Alright half off for Corpse Party and the Sequel is coming to North America I am very excited to get this game tomorrow

  • for those who are confuse here’s how the series works

Corpse Party which was released in the PC-9801 is the original game.

    two remakes where made:

Corpse Party: Blood Covered released in windows

Corpse Party: Blood Covered Repeated Fear released in PSP(rename in the US as only “Corpse Party”)

the sequel Corpse Party: Book of Shadows is a follow up to the PSP remake.

the spin off Corpse Party: 2U is in Sachiko’s birthday where characters that were dead are alive etc

    *SPOILERS

the sequel Corpse Party: Blood Drive is revealed during the “Blood Drive” Chapter in Book of Shadows

another game that is gonna be released in winter 2012 for windows is Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient

it is NOT the same as Blood Drive(3rd sequel). it takes place in Blood Covered world with a different setting

    *END SPOILERS

hopefully we get all Corpse Party games :)

  • i love you so much XSEED! :)

    • Your love is not unlike a perfectly crafted balloon dog, given freely by a man in a top hat one mid summer afternoon…

  • Hello Mr. Lipschultz i have a couple of questions i hope you’ll answer

    1) will you guys release a sound track for corpse party by any chance? iTunes/PSN?

*If so please add the nightmare of the school year, end of chapter 3, soul of steel. plus the opening of 1& BOS

    2) will blood drive be more like #1… i watched some gameplay for BOS not bad but like sprites walking around and solving puzzles. :)

    3) by any chance will corpse party 2 will appear in the vita with new features? i saw a trailer somewhere looks good :D

    Thank you

  • I was always intrigued by Corpse Party, but somehow the game slipped past me and I totally forgot about it. Not making that mistake again!

As for Book of Shadows, like everyone else I’m hoping it will be Vita compatible. Then again, you guys have supported the Vita quite well so far :).

    OMG ORGARHYTHM TOMORROW.

  • THANK YOU XSEED!!!! I was really hoping this would get localized. I loved the first one and this news has made my Halloween!
I’d advise anyone who loves J-horror to consider Corpse Party. You don’t have to be a big JRPG fan, because it’s not at all a stat-heavy game, it’s actually very simple to play but with a compelling storyline. Hopefully, the sequel will be playable on PSV too? Seems silly to release a PSP title this late in the day without Vita compatibility.

    • We’re definitely aiming to put it out every which way we can, so PSP and Vita players may be united in their bloody joy. Be sure to keep spreading the good word!

      -Jess

  • ABOUT TIME!!! just take my $$$ already! XD

  • dear tom, please fix the xseed forums since many forum goers like me cant see “whats new” anymore.also the search feature seems to be broken as well.

    • Hey, Perrandy. Sorry we haven’t been able to focus on the forums, but Tom is away and I am very, very busy. We’ll see what we can do when we actually have a moment to spare.

      -Jess

  • thanks for the price drop. I will be getting this once its up.

  • This is great news!! Thank you so much XSEED!!

  • Ach! My little sister and I still haven’t found our way past the “hairfirmary”, and I got this game with the $20 PSN card from my folks for Christmas last year (I guess that’s the “Tim” in “Tim Burton” syncing up). But, still, very cool experience as far as we’ve managed.

  • I didn’t get the first game when it first came out because i felt it was overpriced for a game on a dying system. I’ll check it out now that its on Sale and Vita capatible.

    • Just because the system is a bit old doesn’t mean the game isn’t up to par. It’s a really cool experience and at $19.99 I wouldn’t call it overpriced at all! And now with the sale… :D Give a run (especially at night, alone and in the dark) and see if you like it.

      -Jess

  • @17 i agree. I also don’t get why there are still psp games being released for $30 on the psn store. They should be $14.99 max, considering there are still some that aren’t even Vita capatible.

  • Jess, how about some word on The Legend of Heroes Zero No Kiseki Evolution and Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees coming out in the US? Both look fantastic. :)

Keep up the great work, XSEED is easily one of my favorite publishers.

    • All I can tell you is that the mome raths outgrabe. They also gyre and gymble in the wabe, but that’s besides the point. :)

      -Jess

  • Day 1 buy for me as well. Hopefully I can play this on my Vita day 1 like I can play the first Corpse Party.

  • Jessica, still amazes me that you take the time to answer every comment. You are the best localization specialist EVER, and one of the main reasons I support XSEED (well, the games are great, too.)

    • Awww, thanks, Fedast. You guys take the time to comment and support us, so we do our best to keep up with you all. We can’t always answer, but we try. ^_^ Thanks for being awesome!

      -Jess

  • @34: To add, any news about Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky)’s Second Chapter? Is there still a chance of it getting the same kind of localization as Corpse Party did? In that sense I guess it’s a good sign that XSEED is still digitally releasing PSP games.

Will definitely be picking this up to support XSEED, they’ve been delivering some great games of late. Trails might have been my favorite game on any platform last year.

    • We do love our handhelds. ^_^ Cheers for all the support, and we will keep outputting the cool, the niche, and the bizarre as long as you guys keep calling for them. As for your other questions, see my reply to #34.

      -Jess

  • I would like for you guys to consider localizing the recently announced ps3 port of Trails in The Sky. I enjoyed the psp game when i played it years ago but never finished it because i kinda got tired of playing long rpgs on an handheld like that.

I would love to jump back into it on the ps3 in HD with trophies. :)

  • Day 1 Buy for me!

  • I would like to just put down my vote for more PSP titles. No interest in the Vita. It’s win Win with PSP titles as the PSP and Vita should be able to use them. Bigger audience for the game.

Also thanks for the reply Jess. The reply to TXC had me in stitches.

    • Well, the digital compatibility between the two allows for this kind of thing, and it’s great to see continued support for the PSP (especially since we keep releasing games on it). More games on both systems is ace, I think.

And, Tom really does love sweet things. I wish them both luck on their romantic future together. :)

      -Jess

  • Hey jess by any chance can you answer my questions? #24 Thank you

    • Still trying to get the details for yours. This game is not my specialty, after all. I can say for #1 that Japanese licencors usually release the soundtracks themselves, so it’s best to check with them, but for 2 & 3 I don’t personally know. :/

So instead I will write you a Corpse Party/Game of Thrones haiku:

      Winter is coming
      Let’s butter up our poopers
      And die together

  • Why not just make it a PS Vita game with trophies?

    • Well, we’re only the publisher, so that kind of thing is outside our purview. We don’t ‘make’ games at all. ^_^

      -Jess

  • thanks jess , i hope there will be interesting avatars in north america store .

    • Not sure it’s anything we’ve ever done before, but could be cool. No promises, but we’ll look into it. :)

      -Jess

  • YES! I loved the first one and have been dying to play the sequel! I’m so glad it’s finally getting a patch and being released stateside! I love XSEED and Team GrisGris for putting together this beautiful game!

    • It will soon be yours (if everything goes well)! Cheers for the support and keep spreading the word of Dead Body Fiesta: Almanac of Shade!

      -Jess

  • I have a question. Will I need a working psp analog stick for Corpse Party: Book of Shadows? It broke a long while ago and is constantly drifting downward while playing other games but corpse party was still very much playable since it used the d-pad. Is it the same this time around?

  • Corpse Party was the first horror game I literally could not continue playing more than halfway through because it was just too distressing and disturbing, and this is coming from a big horror fan. Japanese horror has a way of getting to me in a way that Western horror cannot touch.

I may try again right before the sequel comes out, I was really digging it and maybe some time away from it is what I need to finish it…

    • Some people found it extremely disturbing (it does go about its creepy moments in a more creative way than other horror games, I think), and others laughed uproariously whenever someone met a particularly grisly end (me!), but in either case, the story was good enough to warrant more play. I think you should bully through just to find out what happens… :) And then buy the sequel to hear more about the secrets of Heavenly Host! :D

      -Jess

  • How about a PS3 port? I’d LOVE to play these games but don’t have either a PSP or Vita, and won’t have either in the foreseeable future… if ever. More than happy to purchase any and all Corpse Party titles, but only if I can play them on my PS3. :(

    • A PS3 port would be totally up to the developer, but we pass on fan feedback, so we’ll let ’em know. ^_- But, you are missing out. (No one to borrow from?) What better game to curl up with on a blustery Halloween night than Corpse Party…

      -Jess

  • @Jess While I have no idea how the deal between the publisher and developer went for this game at all… would think that the publisher has some influence as to the platforms that a game lands on and I am sure that it is on PSP because it is bound to sell more in Japan. However, releasing a PS Vita version that has trophies and uses some of the PS Vita unique functionality would’ve been nice.

    • ARGH. I ALWAYS screw up the last comment like that. I’ll post it again here for you, but #50 is my response to you as well. Haha.

“Usually we approach developers after the games have been made because that’s when we see fan response to them in Japan or hear our own US fans clamoring for them. And since we have no connection to them generally until after this point, we have no input on what platforms or features, etc. go into them. We can always give teams fan feedback, though, so if there’s desire for a Vita version or PS3 port we might pass it along, but that’s about all the influence we have. And you’re right about the PSP still being strong in Japan. Lucky for us we have hardcore PSP fans of our own who will keep supporting awesome games if we bring ’em over. That coupled with digital versions being playable on Vita and we still have a winning combination!

      -Jess

P.S. And, we all know if there were trophies associated with it, Tom would give them weird names. Buttery names…”

  • Thank you for bringing this game to North America. With Ragnarok Odyssey and Orgarhythm right around the corner it seems that almost all of my purchases are from small time developers this fall such as AKSYS and XSeed. Keep up the good work and I’m looking forward to Second Chapter next year. :)

    • And thank you for the continued support! We have many, many games coming up, so don’t hold back! :D

      -Jess
