Assassin’s Creed III: Expose Benedict Arnold Exclusively on PS3

Benedict Arnold’s secret plot to betray West Point and sabotage the American Revolution earned him the ultimate mark of infamy: a name that will forevermore be synonymous with deceit and treachery. And on October 30th, the most reviled turncoat in American history will be virtually resurrected in Assassin’s Creed III to pay his dues once more — but only on PlayStation 3.

The PS3-exclusive four-mission arc begins with a special request from General Washington in exposing a rumored plot to overthrow West Point, a critical link in the defense of the Colonies against Great Britain. Across four missions, Connor will flush out Loyalist spies and work undercover for Benedict Arnold, culminating in a full-blown assault on West Point that Connor must halt at all costs.

We reached out to Assassin Creed III scriptwriter Matt Turner to learn more about what’s in store for PS3 players on October 30th.

Assassin’s Creed III: Expose Benedict Arnold Exclusively on PS3

PlayStation.Blog: What prompted you to choose Benedict Arnold as the focal point of these PS3-exclusive missions?
Matt Turner, Scriptwriter, Assassin’s Creed III: Benedict Arnold is a name that transcended the Revolution and became a synonym for the word ‘traitor’. Given some of the themes in the main story thread, it flowed really well with some of the later beats… but I won’t be specific as they are spoilers! It was also a great opportunity for us to tell a story that people know but don’t really know, you know?

PSB: How accurate are the details regarding Benedict Arnold’s activities? Does it build on what we know about Arnold’s treason, or does it fall more in line with alternate history fiction a la The Tyranny of King Washington?

“Who was there, what they did, and what happened to them is as precise as the history books would allow.”

MT: It’s definitely not like King Washington. We have some scenes that have the actual words spoken by key players in the events at West Point, according to the records from the court proceedings following what happened. On the other side of things, we needed to inject it with some gameplay so there are some liberties in terms of the action. But who was there, what they did, and what happened to them is as precise as the history books would allow.

Our interpretation of Arnold actually weaves into the overall fiction and to divulge that would be to spoil a portion of the story. That being said, we don’t like having “bad guys” in Assassin’s Creed and this is no different in terms to Arnold and these missions. He has his reasons, and from a certain perspective they make complete sense.

Assassin's Creed III for PS3: Exclusive Benedict Arnold Missions only on PlayStation

PSB: What kinds of activities and missions will players embark on during the Benedict Arnold missions?
MT: The player will be fighting a variety of characters from both sides of the conflict. Activities range from the mundane to the epic… but I don’t want to give too much away, as it’s part of the experience!

PSB: What’s your favorite detail about the Benedict Arnold mission arc in the game?
MT: I actually think the exchange between some Patriots and one of the traitors that we were able to reproduce word-for-word is my favorite part.

PSB: On a final note, what might have happened if General Washington hadn’t learned of Benedict Arnold’s treason and put an end to it?

“If West Point had been captured by the British… the Patriots would have lost the war.”

A simple fact is that the Hudson River was the single most strategic body of water during the American Revolution. It essentially split the colonies in two, so whoever controlled the river controlled the supply lines. And West Point was by far the most heavily fortified area during the war for this very reason. Where the fort was built, the river narrowed and made a small ‘S’, allowing enough room for only one tall ship to pass through at a time. The Patriots built a massive chain on rafts floating across the water stopping any ship from making its way up because they were so outmatched in terms of the navy. It was the only way they could hope to hold it – and it worked.

A large portion of Revolutionary historians contend that if West Point had been captured by the British, and the chain destroyed, the Patriots would have lost the war.

  • Love you guys are catering the PS3 players! But to be honest, it seems unfair to give console exclusivities for a story game. Not just Assassins Creed, but a lot of other developers are doing it!

  • One week. Just one week guys. AC III and AC III Liberation. Can’t wait! Glad that the PS3 version has even more content – that’s always a plus in my book. :)

  • I luv Ubisoft. You know what makes us tick! Also, can we get more info on Liberation any time soon. Can I get this question answered: Does Linking Liberation and ACIII unlock anything in ACIII?

    • Yes it does! You’ll unlock an extended ammo pouch and Connor’s tomahawk for Aveline in ACIII. There will be more info on that topic coming soon, too.

  • On a brighter note, pre-ordered it. Just one more week!

  • Great, so I’ll just wait for the GOTY/Complete edition to get the full game at less than a crazy amount of money. Hopefully pre-orders aren’t important to you. Good job.

    • In case there’s any confusion, the Benedict Arnold missions are free extra content for PS3 owners – it’s not something you’ll need to pay for.

  • @9 I’m pretty sure this isn’t DLC. Its on disc right? And I do not think you have to pay for it either way similar to the Copernicus thing in Brotherhood

    • You’ll use a voucher code in the game box to download the PS3-exclusive Benedict Arnold missions from PlayStation Store (and yep, they’re free).

  • @9
It’s just extra missions that 360 users don’t get. Why are you annoyed?

  • nice, can’t wait for the game to finally come out, just one more week & imma be @ the midnight launch =D

  • @9 these 4 missions will come with the game at no extra cost. and of course there will be dlc later on

  • TY,ty Ubisoft! This game keeps getting better and better. Keep it up!!

  • I really love DLC! and I just simply love this DLC! Thanks UBISOFT! Looking forward for these missions ^__^

  • @1 sk8ordi44

I see no issue with 3rd parties doing this if there is a technological reasoning behind it. For instance Bluray Discs have a ton of space, if they could fit content that is finished or that the studio really wants to make on a bluray, but get shafted because other systems are using DVD (no excuse for the PC version btw) then I can see this as a great reason for it. Why should I get penalized when the manufacturer of my console made the right decision in putting in a bluray drive. Much more why should I be penalized if the maker of my console doesn’t enforced stupid arbitrary download cap sizes on DLC.

If Ubisoft can make Assassin’s Creed better with more content and a system allows it then by all means do it.

Something tells me this Exclusive Extended Content was something easily done on PS3 and that Sony may have been willing to throw their weight behind. I support that.

  • so will this be on disc, or will it have a code?

  • Thanks 4 the scoop Sid!

I also read that the ac3/ ac liberation connectivity will get connor an exclusive NY mission. So even more of a bonus to go with the superior ps3 version!

  • PS3 users even complain when they get extra content for free lol. Can’t write this stuff.

  • @ Sid
Do we get these with the digital version? And do we get ‘A Dangerous Secret’ mission with pre-order like the EU?

  • I’m so excited for AC3.. Free (and exclusive) content is always good too. I’m always looking for new competition when it comes to the multiplayer. Any takers? :)

  • Crap now I am debating on getting this for PS3 PREORDERED FOR 360 THOUGH AHHH console problems

  • So I learn real history while playing this game? Cool.

  • While I’m also not a fan of this trend of the console manufacturers paying 3rd party publishers for bonus/extra content for their version of multiplatform games, we have to remember who started this war. Because Micro$oft simply couldn’t match Sony’s PS3 exclusives game for game, they started lining the pockets of Activision, Capcom, EA and others for timed exclusive content. Sony does this too now (although not as much as M$), but really it’s just them fighting back. I tend to agree with @16 in the sense that a lot of the time the PS3 exclusive content is due to the larger capacity of the Blu-ray disc. Take Assassin’s Creed Revelations – it has Assassin’s Creed 1 on the PS3 disc but not on the 360 because it’s physically impossible to fit it on there.

  • I’m also not a fan of retailer-specific pre-order bonuses, but I get why they do it. You can buy a game from 20 different outlets so how do you attract customers to buy it from your store? Makes sense even if I don’t agree with it. But really a multiplatform title should provide the same user experience regardless of platform, especially in single-player. However we’re too far down that road now and I see console-specific, timed-exclusive content and extra content continuing into next generation as well unfortunately.

  • @Sid Shuman
I asked whether cross linking the two games would get you anything in ACIII. I know you get stuff in Liberation but what about the main console one on PS3?

Also, will digital customers get this bonus content. If its a voucher then do the unfortunate people who buy used games have the option to BUY the DLC?

  • I love that you are using famous historic people from the American Revolution, and not just using the setting, makes me more intrigued about the game.

  • @20

I can’t imagine these PS3 exclusive missions not being included in the PS3 digital version of the game. If they are not included, there will be quite a few upset psn customers (myself included) that will probably never go digital again. I’ve already pre-orderd both and the 30th can’t come fast enough. I just hope i’m right and they are included in the digital version.

Does anyone know how many gigs AC3 will be and if it will be a midnight release on psn.

  • Sorry for the earlier outburst. Obviously in this case it’s not about the price, I just kind of get tired of the games I want being broken up into a bunch of pieces and I have to piece them together. Like if it’s free(same with Copernicus for Brotherhood), then why not have it on the disc? Years from now if something happens to my system and Sony’s online service isn’t around anymore that add-on content will be lost forever no? Assassin’s Creed 2 for instance I had to import the platinum edition from the UK because that was the only way to have the game and all the DLC on the disc(wiki the amount of different retail releases for the AC games, it’s insane). Another example is the orginal Borderlands had two different versions of a GOTY with little to no distinction of which version had the DLC as voucher codes and which one had it on the disc, luckily I got the one on disc. Anyway, I’m really happy about the extra content I just would like to buy a game and have the whole thing be on the disc that I’m purchasing and be done with it, but I know I’m in the minority so it’s ok.

  • @19 I know right.

PS3 isn’t the only one with exclusives or special offers only to their users.

    ONE WEEK though can’t wait.
Wondering if it’ll be cheaper getting the single player dlc alone instead of doing season pass.
I don’t really care for multiplayer. First time that happened. Maybe i’ll be into multiplayer later on though.

I’ll have to try out the PS All Star beta till AC3 show up, better be just as good SuperSmashBro or better. Don’t want it to feel like some cheap copy failure.

  • If the digital version of AC3 does not come with the free ps3 exclusive missions, would that not mean that psn was selling the xbox version of AC3.

  • Has there been a decision yet if Assassins Creed 3 will be available at midnight on 10/30 on PSN? I want to preorder but will do so from gamestop if there is no midnight releease on PSN.

  • do you know if there is going to be cross controler on ac3

  • What if we buy the game from the PSstore?

  • Sid Shuman: “You’ll use a voucher code in the game box to download the PS3-exclusive Benedict Arnold missions from PlayStation Store (and yep, they’re free).”

Err…what if we pre-ordered the game on PSN? Obviously we won’t have any vouchers. Will we not be able to download the missions for the digital version?

  • First poster here, I would also like to know about the PSN version of the game regarding this missions.
    Thanks!!!

  • I was jut informed by a playstation customer service rep. that the digital version of AC3 would not include these extra missions.

    THAT SUCKS!!!!!

  • I have my Assassins Creed III pre-ordered. I have a question though. I’d like to get Liberation digitally but my ps3 doesn’t have enough memory for the AC III & AC Liberation bundle. I can’t seem to find the pre-order for just LIberation so does it even have one yet?

  • Like everyone else is asking. Will you get these missions if you buy the game off of PSN?

  • Damn it, I want to play thinks so bad since I am from Boston MA, but I didn’t beat AC2 yet and Revelations is still unwrapped ,want to play that in 3D first. AC3 will have to wait .

  • Ah, one more week and I’ll have my new white Liberation bundle Vita in my hands

@29, ToH, you’re right about the myriad of different AC options. Just for ACIII, there was originally a steel case one that I missed out on @ Gamestop; Now they carry 2 different kinds. Amazon has one that includes an encyclopedia, an actual hardcover book, that tells you all about the AC universe. I’m probably going to get that one, since I still see no mention of (kinect) voice command on the X version.

I prefer digital but that encyclopedia should be awesome.

Sid, thanks for all the ACIII articles, but I’m on media blackout because a games(s) that looks this special, and has such meaning for us Americans (well, it does for Brits also, but not in a good way, lol) should not be spoiled.

  • Good stuff.

This is an epic win. Game is epic.

  • i know people have asked this question and i like them all would like an answer , will we the people who pre-ordered AC3 off psn get the add on for free or is it only for people who buy the disk. i would really like to know what the deal is with that

  • Anyone know if the Season Pass will cover- Lost Mayan Ruins, Sharpshooter MP Character, & Sawtooth Blade? Or better yet, if i pre-order @ GS will i get Benedict Arnold Missions?

  • Sidenote: I would love Ubisoft to make a new, exclusive Ghost Recon on PS Vita. In the vein of the original games,

Anyhoo, wish it was the 30th.

  • HAHA on the EU site and some of the other boards UK people are complaining and saying they won’t play this because of the “Brit bashing in the story line”

  • http://www.gamesradar.com/assassins-creed-iii-six-revolutionary-moments-didnt-make-cut/ Guess we can expect the rest as dlc as well. Bad form ubi, bad form.
