Ratchet & Clank Full Frontal Assault on PS3 and PS Vita

This fun-sized adventure is one of the best values we’ve ever offered, featuring a campaign you can play single-player or in co-op (split screen or online). It’s classic Ratchet & Clank gameplay with a base defense twist. Even after you play it once, you’ll want to try again to improve your scores and times! On top of the campaign, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault has a new multiplayer mode that you can play 1v1 or 2v2. We’re really proud of it, and we’ve been working hard to bring additional skins as well as new bonus multiplayer maps to the game, and you can expect more details in the coming weeks.

For those of you who also own a PlayStation Vita system, the game supports cross-buy, cross-save and competitive multiplayer cross-play. If you purchase Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault for the PS3 system, you’ll be able to download the PS Vita version at no additional cost when available in January 2013.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Ratchet & Clank series this year has been a blast for all of us at Insomniac. From the release of the Ratchet & Clank Collection, to playing the Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault beta with you, and even sharing the iam8bit Ratchet & Clank screenprint program (keep an eye on G4TV this week for the “making of” the first print, and a reveal of Print #2), it’s been a great year for Ratchet fans. All of our fans getting to celebrate the anniversary with a new game this week is the cherry on top. For a taste of the action, be sure to check out the free demo for Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault which will be available for PS3 on PSN starting today.

See you online!

  • Pre-ordered this from Amazon for the PS3/Vita version… I really just wanted it for the Vita version, but figured it would be nice since you get both for $20. Now I find out the Vita version won’t be out until January?!?!? Serious let down… I could have spent that $20 on more Black Friday deals. That is really uncool Insomniac.

    • We announced it via the PS Blog a ways back, it’s Tin Giant and Sony that are developing the Vita version and to make sure it’s up to the standards of the series, it had to be held back.

The good news is your PS3 version will work and is ready to roll today, and the instant the Vita version is available in January, you’ll be able to download it for free.

  • I have a question James, if I wait for the Vita version, will there be a physical Vita copy sold in stores in January, if not will it be sold in the Vita PS Store? (not just being accessible through a voucher)

    • No. There is no physical version of the Vita SKU.

If you buy the retail PS3, you can download the game via the Disc Features on the disc in the game menu on the XMB.

If you buy the digital PS3, or the digital Vita version (in January) you will also be able to download the other version through your PSN account.

  • i’ve been waiting for 5 hours for the release of the psn version. god, feel like decade.

  • Can you make a Skin of Lawrence, Drek or Tachyon? please!

  • where’s cross-buy? in Disc Benefits?

  • i’ve never played a R&C before; tried the beta for All-4-One but was lost in characters, story, weapons, etc. i know it’s a critically acclaimed franchise, but what exactly is this game? i watched the trailer video and it looks like a typical R&C adventure game, but on the PSN Blog they say it’s a castle defense. i don’t see any castle defense mechanics in the trailer.

    • It’s base defense for sure w/ lots of action and adventure.

My best advice, download the trial version that’s on the store now and check it out!

  • Awesome, the Ratchet & Clank games are always great can’t wait to download this later today!

  • Will the Vita version have ad-hoc multiplayer?

  • I have an legitimate question. Since this is the first real Cross-buy title that is out for both retail and digital download, for the same price across both platforms; Will I be able to buy the Retail copy of the game and get the digital copy of the PS3 and Vita version for free?

Seeing as how I get the Vita Version, when I buy the PS3 version and go through the disc benefits on my PS3. But on the PSN it would come up as bought for the Vita to entitle me to the digital copy of the PS3 version. Right? No, okay.

I know it sounds unorthodox, for a company to do so, but I had to ask. As for a business standpoint it would hurt sales. So I understand if you don’t. It’s not a triple Cross-buy title.

Can’t wait for the store to update. Need my R&C fix after playing through the collection.

    • No, the retail SKU only entitles you to the Vita download. The PSN purchase entitles you to the PS3 AND Vita downloads. Make sense?

  • Im hope im not to late.. I have question its bit off topic

I understand you guys where the1st or the 2nd to do online game from ps2 to psn. You dont have give a full indepth exact detail , but how hard is that do with a old ps2 game for online part to ps3 to psn

The reason iask is becuase of old ps2 communites wouldlike to se there old mp online game come back. alot are saying it cannt be done but i saw you did it and etc. So this black hole theory for ps3 right now. if it ok to ask for reply.

btw love the new racket game. Igot it for nephews this christmas today. thank agian

    • It takes a lot of effort, Idol Minds had to do tons of work to get the game running, much less all the hackery and things that old PS2 games did.

  • boxer or briefs?..hey you said EVERY QUESTION..LOL – -BTW OF COURSE IM GETTING THIS GAME..INSOMIAC is AWESOME..RACHET AND RESISTANCE are the REASON I OWN A PLAYSTATION ..THANK YOU GUYS KEEP UP THE FAN – TASTIC WORK! (see what i did there ;)

  • Yessssss!! i wanted this game on blu-ray disc and now i can’t be more pleased ! ;), i will get this game now for sure.

  • I just checked the trophy list and there look to be some fun challenges in store.

I’d also like to thank the Insomniac for encouraging participation rather than requiring mastery of online multiplayer with the trophy list. There’s nothing worse, IMO, than trophies that require winning 10 online matches in a row or some such nonsense. It just encourages boosters/cheaters.

  • James Stevenson, I knew that was the case. I just wanted to ask.

  • All right. Thanks for information!! This game rocks!! :)

  • This is fantastic…although I can’t wait to play this baby…I’ll have to wait to pick it up…got no money right now and I don’t like digital games not when its available at retail as well.Got all the Ratchet games since the 1st of PS2…so Ratchet fan right here.A Ratchet game is always welcome. Those are some Superb graphics and Its awesome to have a download version waiting on Vita until January.Great job guys. Also its great that this is the 10th game of Ratchet along with the 10th anniversary. This is some great times to be a Ratchet fan.

  • thanks for the reply, i enjoyed Quest 4 Booty and since this is slighty longer + more content/mp + free vita copy with ps3 purchase, I’ll definately pick it up.

Just wanted to be sure of what i’d be getting :)

    • No worries, gotta confirm before you spend the money! We wanted to make sure this game had a great value for our fans

  • I’m so gonna get this game as soon as I get paid :P…I’ve always loved the R&C games, I just wished the Vita version was already available, but I know your work is always amazing.

    • Thanks so much for your support, we wish the Vita version was ready too, but we’d rather give you an awesome Vita experience than a less-than-awesome Vita experience ;-)

  • It is now available through a search of the store for me. Dowloading Now!!!!

  • Vita version may be delayed but man I sure am glad all the day 1 dlc made it on time

  • Ohhh since someone at insomniac is answering posts, i would like to ask something i’ve been wanting to know since ratchet debuted on PS3: will we ever see Sasha, Al, Helga and Courtney Gears in any future installments?? i miss those characters! :-), one last thing a bit of topic i want to say is that the spyro games from PS1 made my childhood happy! thanks in advance for your reply !

    • You may see skins for them in this game :-)

And who knows what the future holds.

Thanks for being a great fan.

  • Picked this up on pre-order right after finding out about it, came in today with my black friday PS3! Very excited to play and support you guys so hopefully in the future we can get a long single player game in the works. Until then Ill have fun playing this one!

  • Pre-ordered last week and my wife and I are saving it as a Christmas present to ourselves (and that won’t make the wait for the Vita release seem quite so long)! We missed out on all of the earlier PS2 games and have been working our way through the HD collection.

Here’s to the next 10 years of Ratchet and Clank – best video games series ever!

    • That’s awesome, will you play it on Christmas Day? Or start early on Christmas Eve?

Speaking of HD remakes, we’ll have news on Deadlocked HD soon, and of course if you haven’t played the Future saga (Tools of Destruction, Quest For Booty, and A Crack in Time) – I think you’ll enjoy them as well

  • yes! i do wanna thank you for the all 4 one in 3D :) EPIC. looking forward to playing FFA in 3D as well :) as a whole i really appreciate the love insomniac has for 3D :) R3 in 3D was B3YOND!

    • Beyond!

No problem, we try to support 3D where we can and since it was built into our Ratchet engine, it made sense :-)

  • I’m definitely getting this game. I’ve been a fan since the R&C series started.

  • I have a feeling this is going to be like Brink in the aspect that the campaign is just going to be an exact copy of the multiplayer, but not against real people.

    • Actually, it’s not really. The campaign was what we built first, and then we built multiplayer and changed things up a bit. For instance there aren’t really phases in the single-player post.

  • Mine’s downloading now! Thanx a ton for the platinum guys, I’m happy you were thinking of us upon developing the trophy list. If I import Q-force, will the trophies stack, since it has a different title and all?

  • I’m digging the B2 Brawler skin. It would be awesome if you could manage some outside skins from other games as DLC like you did with Jak in Deadlocked, but I know that can get hairy with all the different rights holders.

Anyways, you had mentioned about a 3gig download for the PS3 version, does that apply to the Vita as well, or will that version be smaller? Or is the size for the Vita version even finalized yet?

    • yeah, we have so many great characters from our own universe to deal with too.

The size on Vita isn’t final, but I’d guess it’d be relatively similar

  • Please have Rusty Pete included in future Ratchet games…hes a fantastic character and I was hoping you could tell us who did his voice.

  • my problem is this game has lost so much from the PS Vita, more then half the players will not be playing the game anymore, and alot more probably won’t play online and will only play the campaign. This game should have been delayed as a whole so everyone gets a good experience. I’m a big rlRatchet fan but this makes me not wanna bother with this cause I want it for the Vita but realistically just cause there is a competitive mode doesn’t mean people will always be playing. There is no real incentive to keep playing since online you start the same and so on. Not delaying the PS3 version 2 is going to mess this games lifetime up.

    • There will be tons of new players with the Vita version launches, and we’ll have some DLC hitting which should hopefully revitalize the scene.

Also, matchmaking is based on your league and skill as well.

  • @80 Delaying a finished product isn’t going to make anyone happier. I, for one, will be thoroughly enjoying Full Frontal Assault on PS3 right now.

    • Yeah, not much we could do, damned if you do, damned if you don’t sort of situation. Especially with it being the 10th Anniversary and Holiday season!

  • I have been a fan of Ratchet and Clank since I was little, but what happened to the series after ACIT? It is not the same anymore in my opinion. I tried playing All 4 One and the beta for FFA, but it is too different. I know you guys work very hard, but it is just frustrating to me.

    • Well, it’s been 1 game and 1 beta? If you’re on the fence, give the game trial a whirl. It’s on the store now and if you like it, you can buy and just download the unlock key and get right back to playing!

  • I will say I’m sliiightly disappointed its not full on classic R&C action with co-op… was hoping this was like another Deadlocked, but the injected tower defense elements have me iffy. At the same time, I’ll still give ’em a chance now that camera control is back alongside co-op. I guess games like AC: Revelations and Brutal Legend have me paranoid with game genres just not belonging in certain types of games.

Anyway, I’ll still get it, especially if its getting DLC support and hopefully convince a friend to get it as well. I’m not too big on multiplayer and prefer co-op, so make some co-op maps, too, for those of us that aren’t competitive! lol

    • Hmm, it’s got base defense, but the emphasis is still on you being your base’s best defense and being an action game. But don’t take my word for it, check out the trial. And even then, at 19.99, it’s a bargain for the amount of content.

  • for Canadian buyers – while EB games did not have R & C FFA today, I then went over to Future Shop & was able to buy it ! yea, I was worried for a minute there … are the free mini boss skins available for awhile, or is it a time sensitive free download ? I ask b/c this will be a Christmas gift for my son, but if necessary, I can open, install & DL sooner than later …. can hardly wait to try this out … we own all but QFB …. great series, & while we seem to be in the minority, we have really had a blast with All 4 One …. great co-op experience. hours have slipped away while we wandered in game. thanks so much for this new & unique offering.

    • The free mini boss skins are available always. Even then, if you want to download in advance you can search for it on the store without opening the game and download.

What a great Christmas gift! Hope your son loves it! And thanks for the kind words on All 4 One, we know it was polarizing, but we stories like yours and many others from families out there really mean a lot to us.

And no Q4B? You should jump on that! :-)

  • I would just like to say that there aren’t many games that I get incredibly excited for anymore, but every time I hear about a new Ratchet and Clank game it’s like I’m 8 years old again and it’s Christmas morning. DON’T EVER STOP MAKING THEM.

  • After maining Ratchet in Playstation All-Stars and picking up the R&C Collection on Black Friday, I figured I might as well keep the Ratchet streak going… bought! By the way, is the Ratchet design in All 4 One and this game his official look from here on out, or will there be a return to his classic look as seen in PSASBR? Both look great IMO, just wondering.

    • PSAS is it’s own offshoot and they decided to use that Ratchet for their own reasons.

Ratchet continues to evolve with us, and his current look is reflected in FFA, where he goes from here? Who knows! We’ll continue to evolve him

  • Just awesome! I picked up the physical copy today and I am LOVING it. Thanks for another quality game Insomniac!

  • Can’t wait to get FFA this weekend i have been Replaying the entire Ratchet And Clank Anniversary for the last two weeks and i am excited to add this game to my collection alongside Tools Of Destruction, Quest For Booty, A Crack In Time, and All 4 One, as well as right next to my PS2 versions of Ratchet And Clank 1-3.

Gotta say I have and love all the Ratchet And Clank games so keep up the good work Insomniac

and on a side note I saw the box art for Fuse and I am looking forward to playing it as well

  • So the is the mini boss pack a bonus we get when we pre ordered or when we put the disc in and sends us a message sort of thing? I hope it wasn’t a pre order bonus :(

  • Sweet! Thanks for the help. Can’t wait to play it for Christmas. I just started playing the Ratchet & Clank series when i bought the collection. You guys did a really good job with the game and i hope you don’t stop :)

  • Can you list the Ratchet and Clank games in order please? I would like to have em all. Also are they all on Ps3?

    • Ratchet & Clank (PS2 – but available in HD in the Ratchet HD Collection)
Ratchet & Clank Going Commando (PS2 – but available in HD in the Ratchet HD Collection)
Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal (PS2 – but available in HD in the Ratchet HD Collection)
Ratchet Deadlocked (PS2 – but coming soon to PSN as an HD Download)
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty (PS3 – download only in North America)
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3)
      Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault

  • Is there any chance that the game will get Splitscreen MP local and Online? I bought the retail version and it’s been pretty fun but I was a bit dissapointed when I found out that I can’t play local competitive and splitscreen MP Online.

    • Not in the current plans, we had originally hoped to have split-screen so you could play MP online together with a friend, but it didn’t make the final cut, I’m afraid.

  • I’m still amazed at you James for answering every single post, more studios should take a look at how you guys treat your fans, here’s hoping that some day I’ll be in your position, you guys are one of the best examples in the industry. Even when I hoped to see more Resistance games from you and felt a little sad for you guys leaving Sony’s exclusivity, I get that as an artist and as a company everybody dreams to stand on their own feet, and I applaud you for achieving it. It’s very rare for me to write twice here, but just wanted to thank you for every single minute of fun you guys have given us, and for being a great inspiration to us all, thank you. Greetins from Costa Rica. (sorry for the grammar :P)

    • No problem, I love answering PS Blog commenters. Such a nice group here.

And Costa Rica, so beautiful, would love to visit soon

  • Whoa, nice job on answering all these comments! Ratchet and Clank was the first game I played on the Playstation 2 all those years ago. I’m happy to say I’ve picked up all the Ratchet and Clank games since then, across the Playstation 2, PSP, and PS3. All your games are amazing Insomniac, and I will continue to support you guys. I loved All 4 One too. Sure it catered to kids a bit more, and I didn’t have camera control, but co op with a buddy on the couch is so darn fun! My bro gets “noob” all the time and i just lol. I’ll definitely be strolling into GameStop this week to pick up a copy of FFA. I love physical copies, so good thing I can enjoy that sweet cover art here in the states.

    • Hah, thanks for the kind words, and glad you have fun with All 4 One. That’s what we made it for and we think it’s great in that regard.

We hope you enjoy FFA, and we also hope your copy is safely reserved, those retail ones have been going fast from the reports we’ve heard.

  • Thanks for the list. I will buy every single one of those games.

    • You’re my hero. The good news is they are all under 20 bucks (except for the HD Collection, which is 30). And All 4 One is part of the PS+ Instant Game Collection too.

Deadlocked should be out soonish. We’ll have details on that in the next month or two!

  • Just popping in to say, James Stevenson you are one of the best community managers in the video game industry today. You are constantly replying to users on here despite getting beaten up on certain issues that are better left in the past. You’ve been a fantastic bridge between the community as a whole and Insomniac Games for quite some time, and help give IG that homely feel that a lot of developers strive to reach. You help Insomniac Games feel like a small studio that gives a lot of attention to the community despite it’s large size. Normally the bigger a company gets the less time it spends actually communicating. I may not always agree with certain decisions Insomniac has made, but I’m still a huge fan of Insomniac and a huge fan of yours. Keep it classy Mr. Stevenson, and if you’re not busy! Also, if you’re not busy…bring back the Full Moon Show. I don’t really care if you don’t have information to doll out, it was always a good time.

    • Yeah, I know, I need to make more Full Moon Shows. It’s on my agenda for the spring to talk about Fuse more. Had a host of scheduling and then when we worked that out, technical issues with our gear. Still, it’s HIGH time we did more.

  • Definitely picking this up, though I can’t quite shake the feeling that if it weren’t for the retail release, this would’ve been a typical $14.99 game on PSN.

You guys need to do whatever it takes to get Deadlocked (I know it’s announced), Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time, and Secret Agent Clank and Size Matters as PS2 Classics or PSP Remasters so that the entire collection is on there. Been working my way through the PS2 HD Collection (The final boss of 1 is terrible) and I’d love to have more to go through once I’m done with those three games.

    • You might be right, the combination of the retail release + the cross-buy Vita sku (and really, to be honest, the competitive mode and all the bonus/free support we have coming for it) pushed it up to 19.99.

We still think it’s a heck of a deal at that price done.

Deadlocked HD is almost done, we’ll have news on a date for that hopefully before the holiday (and maybe out this year, but if not, early next year).

In terms of the PSP games, that’s all up to Sony and High Impact!

  • Looks good, and for $20, can’t go wrong.
Now just have to wait for Deadlocked HD, and the anniversary will be complete. :)

  • I would think that it would only help for Insomniac to act as a mediator to get the ball rolling between Sony and High Impact to get Secret Agent Clank and Size Matters on PSN. ;)

    • Hah, we’re totally open to having it done, Sony just has to find the devs and work out the deal and such, plus get the assets from HIG!

  • I won’t respond to 81 cause your not going to get the point
but James thanks for great effort responding, but realistically there are not alot of vitas out there, it won’t help releasing it first on ps3 2 months earlier. Delaying the game as a whole would keep interest, cause if me as a big ratchet fan is losing interest cause of this lack of vita support, imagine others. I expressed my disappointment in the way the Vita is treated with this plenty and understand things like cost and development may take longer, but look at stuff like Sly, they fully admitted they moved the game til next year cause the crowded sept onward. and no one complained.Could just say the game needs some extra tweaking for best quality and delayed both, and no one would complain. But honestly even so up til now NOTHING was said yet about the Vita version but it’s coming 2 months late, how is anyone suppose to be excited or looking forward to something no one can see?

    • Well, the Vita delay was announced on this very blog at the beginning of last week. Honestly it was a very late decision, we went up to the wire trying to see if it could be done in time.

And of course the big challenge is that the Vita SKU had to wait on the PS3 version being done, so there were a lot of unknowns, plus co-op, plus competitive, cross-play / cross-save. Anyways, it’s complex and this is a late-gen PS3 game being ported.

We are terribly sorry for the disappointment, but it really was the only option when it came down to it.
