Kat and Emmett In PS All-Stars Details (And New Level Revealed)

Omar Kendall's Avatar Posted by Game Director, SuperBot Entertainment

It’s been a couple of weeks since Seth let the Kat (and the Emmett!) out of the bag, so I thought I’d stop in and give you guys some insight into the philosophy behind putting these two great characters into PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The team and I attended an event at the Santa Monica Studios last night where we gave media attendees the first hands-on look at our new DLC, including the unveil of a brand new level, so I wanted to give you all a sneak peek at some of their moves and show off our newest level, Fearless! It’s all exciting stuff that I’m eager to tell you all about, so let’s get started.

PlayStation All-Stars: Gravity DashPlayStation All-Stars: Gravity Attraction

Gravity Rush landed on PlayStation Vita earlier this year, introducing us to Kat. Her tremendous gravity powers, combined with a really charming personality made her an instant fan favorite, and thus an obvious candidate for PlayStation All-Stars. When looking at Kat’s play style in Gravity Rush two things immediately stood out to us: her reliance on aerial mobility and her arsenal of powerful kick-based attacks. We felt it was important to use these two elements as the cornerstone of Kat’s play style, and as such, her move set in PlayStation All-Stars makes liberal use of both.

For example, Kat doesn’t have a double jump! Instead, she relies on her Gravity Dash, an eight-direction mini-flight mode to move through the air. This cancellable move affords Kat an unprecedented degree of air mobility and attack potential.

PlayStation All-Stars: Kat Level 1

Another example sees Kat using her powers of gravity manipulation directly against her rivals. Kat creates gravity wells, which draw in nearby players via her Gravity Attraction attack. Kat’s playstyle is such that she’s most effective when close to her opponents, and while her air mobility and varying kicks allow her to get in close pretty well, Gravity Attraction lets her pull her opponents directly to her. Success with Kat will require players to use all of Kat’s abilities in harmony, and Gravity Attraction plays a key role in accomplishing that.

I also want to give you guys a look at one of Kat’s Supers. Kat’s Level 1 Super, Gravity Squeeze, is based on her finishing attack so often used to dispatch the bosses in Gravity Rush. Kat leaps at her foe, stealing a giant orb of energy. As she destroys the orb, her victim explodes. If anyone is caught within the resulting blast of energy, they explode too! This is a very powerful Super, but one that will require Kat players to be clever in order to score maximum points.

This year also saw the release of Starhawk, a game set in the wild galactic frontier where the quest for Rift Energy comes with a terrible human cost. Starhawk’s main protagonist, Emmett Graves, is a man all too familiar with that cost, his body forever transformed by exposure to the toxic Rift Energy. Emmett makes wide use of varying weapons based on advanced technology, most notably through Starhawk’s Build & Battle system. It’s this particular mechanic that made Emmett such a compelling character to the PlayStation All-Stars Team.

PlayStation All-Stars: Shotgun Mine

The first of Emmett’s two most important Build & Battle moves is his Aerial M.A.W Rocket Launcher and Tetranite Grenade Bunker move. This allows Emmett to call down a bunker that when used, completely changes his weapon loadout. The Rocket Launcher gives Emmett access to a long range, powerful, aimable projectile. The grenade launcher provides an equally devastating attack, both in terms of AP generation and versatility, and is used primarily to stop the advancement of opponents in front of Emmett. Both weapons are somewhat slow moving, but more than make up for it in terms of sheer firepower.

The second, but equally important Build & Battle move that I want to tell you about is the Union Shotgun and R-Secs Proximity Mine Bunker move. Like the previous Build & Battle move, a separate bunker is brought in from low orbit, this time with ample shotgun and mine ammunition. Choosing this loadout supplies Emmett with devastatingly quick-hitting, short-range firepower via the shotgun as well as excellent space control through persistent mines. Neither weapon offers the range of the rocket launcher or grenade, so good Emmett players will need to be able to master alternating between both loadouts depending on the situation.

PlayStation All-Stars: Rocket GrenadePlayStation All-Stars: Hawk

What better piece of anti-personnel weaponry is there in the Starhawk universe than the amazingly versatile Hawk? As the ultimate Level 3 Super, Emmett takes control of a Hawk in mech configuration, and is able to chase down his opponents with terrifying machine gun fire and tricky floating mines. And when all else fails, Emmett can transform the Hawk into flight mode and rain down a final hail of bullets that’s tough to survive. It’s an impressive Super, befitting of a universe filled with amazing technology.

Before I go, I want to give you all a look at what we have planned for our newest level, which during development has earned the codename Fearless. Fearless is a mash-up level that sees the fantasy world of Heavenly Sword meet the futuristic race tracks of Wipeout. In the short time we’ve been working on it, Fearless has become one of the team’s favorite levels, and we think you’ll see why.

PlayStation All-Stars: Fearless Top

The action in Fearless starts out atop a high column supported by gigantic ropes, creating a scene pulled straight from the world of Heavenly Sword. Our players will battle it out on this high column under the watchful eye of the forces of Bohan. It’s a medium-sized space, free of any platforms, and offers some of the most uninterrupted calm you can find in PlayStation All-Stars.

PlayStation All-Stars: Fearless Bottom

In the distance though, the hum of anti-gravity racing can be heard, and over the course of the match, a familiar floating race materializes. Soon, the battle is interrupted as stray fire from the famous racing ships of Wipeout hits the fighting column, and our fighters come crashing down into a new, more vertical part of the level, the race track cutting straight through the fight space! Any fighter unlucky enough to get knocked into the track or in the way of one of these terrific ships will pay the cost – literally – by receiving a hefty AP penalty. Knowing how to best leverage your character’s moves while avoiding the dangers of the race track are key tools to mastering your fear, and mastering Fearless.

We’ve still got a long way to go to complete Kat, Emmett, and our new level Fearless, but I hope you enjoyed this early look into where things are going. We think these new characters and level fit well into the gameplay already established in PlayStation All-Stars, while at the same time expanding the notions of what’s possible within our fight system. We can’t wait for you guys to get your hands on this stuff early next year, but there’s still quite a bit of work left to do before we can call anything finished. With that said, I’ll get back to work.

Awesome, the game could use more girls. Like FFXIII’s Lightning, Valkyrie Profile’s Lenneth, Jeanne d’Arc or (this one is personal) Fate/Extra’s playable Caster.

Great, great work SuperBot. I love this game, and so do my friends (Who, save for one, are all either Xbox-ers or PC-ers. One of them said he’d almost buy a PS3 just for this game.)

As for characters…

What about Alucard from the PSX Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? That was one of the best games of the ’90s (And all time, if you ask me) and became a big hit on PSX. I keep the downloadable version snugly installed at all times. Not to mention that it’s gameplay (2D Combat-Based Platforming) is already similar to All-Stars, he’d fit in very nicely. And if you could get Robert Belgrade to do his voice again… UGNNNN! must-have. “WHAT?”

But perhaps that’s too old, and Konami would prefer modern representation from Castlevania. I guess there’s Gabriel Belmont from Lords of Shadow, but he might seem excessive, what with Kratos and Nariko already having chain based blades/weapons.

Ryuhza said:

… (Cont.)

Alex Mercer from Prototype? Everyone could finally have that showdown between him and Cole they’ve been imagining since 2009. Or the more recent James Heller, I suppose. Great moves on either of them though.

Lu Bu from Dynasty Warriors? Dynasty Warriors is a lot bigger overseas of course, but that might do to draw more interest from overseas gamers. Lu Bu is (save for perhaps Zhao Yun) the most recognizable figure from Dynasty Warriors, and doubtlessly the most fearsome. He seems like he’d be a great addition, with powerful range from his great halberd, and perhaps a super involving his famed horse, the Red Hare?

That’s all I got for now. Love your game! Love your love of us fans!

These two and the stage look great! I thought Kat and Emmett were great from the announcement and I can’t wait to give them a try! Anyway, I do have a few questions regarding Kat and Emmett.

When Kat activates her gravity powers, will she be different colors depending on the color she is currently using? Like, if I’m playing as Kat and some other guy’s playing as Kat, will they always have different colors or be the same when we use her gravity powers?

As for Emmett, do his loadout stations stay? As in, after he swaps weapons with a station, can he go back to that station and get his previous loadout? Or does the station go away after getting its loadout? Also, how about a costume of The Outlaw and another of a Warhawk soldier? Eh? Eh?

For some reason my arcade stick is not fully functioning with the PS3 version some reason the L2 and R2 buttons dont work, I have to map the Super to the select button. if you could fix this in an update it would be most appreciated.

I’m using a Mad Catz Tournament Edition Arcade Stick if you need to know.

I’m really enjoying this game so far regardless, It’s great on the Vita too.

Thanks Omar and staff for making a great game.

awesome job superbot, love everything so far but i have a few suggestions to the gameplay and to dlc for the future.
-Sweet Tooth’s mines should give more AP especially since its the core of his playstyle.
-Raiden doesn’t need a parry, he is ridiculous in the fact that he an easily combo into any super and all his supers are too good, better than every other characters.
-Kratos need AP gain lowered
– dlc ideas seem like great ones first off i feel like Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy are too perfect for each other. and dart/cloud rivailry makes to most sense. i also think that if you are able to it would be cool to have Parasite Eve and Silent Hill mashed together and you could introduce Aya Brea and Pyramid Head as new characters
-Dart being a possible character, i really hope that if he makes it his play style should really take advantage of his additions from LoD. the additions in LoD give more spirit points for dragoon transformation when the addition is executed completely. so i feel instead just make his ap gain like that. his level 1 can be his running jump slash he does when he kills a boss, level 2 could be the dragoons form physical attack. and his level 3 can be his dragoon form’s magic attack.

@Omega_Rez i dont know who you are…but i like you. that aya brea and pyramid head rival thing would be perfect, ive thought about it a few times. Superbot should make this happen, would be AMAZING.

Really wish dart could make it in though;D
for a final fantasy character i love cloud but id prefer lightning or vivi for this type of game.

Thanks guys this is Awesome I can’t wait to play as them especially Emmett . Also Omar I have a few DLC character, stages and items suggestions. I hope you don’t mind reading them. There might be a few third party but they still mean alot to Playstation. Niko Bellic (Grand Theft Auto IV) he might seem like all he uses is guns but he could use a bowling ball for a move. His minion could be either Roman or Packie and his stage could be The Francis International Airport and could mix with Modnation Racers. A item related to GTA could be the AA-12 with exploding shells in GTA The Ballad of Gay Tony. Rival could be Kazuma Kiryu from the Yakuza. I think a character should represent Rockstar because they have been there since 1997 and thats where GTA hit it big on Playstation. I will do rivals here to. Max Payne and Leon S Kennedy(Both retired cops :D), Nathan Hale and Lara Croft,Ezio or Conner and Agent 47, Chuck Greene and Juliet Starling, Dovahkinn and Cloud Strife, Tag and Sora and Claptrap and John Marston. Omar I really hope you see this and like the ideas. I would love to see these characters in the game especially Niko because I am a Huge Grand Theft Auto fan. Also I love the game it is the best game ive played this year.

I have a few questions regarding Kat!

1. will her voice actor be the same as in gravity rush?
2. When playing as Kat, would it be expected to see very little of her normal form, or more of her red and black gravity form?
3. regarding alt colors, her gravity mode will also have color changes, right? it would be difficult if you had 4 kats flying around and all look exactly the same!
4. I’m curious as to how far in development she and Emmet are, if you don’t mind telling, such as what you have completed and what needs to be completed, and what you guys are currently doing right now on them.
5. Can we expect some more news on Kat and Emmet soon?
6. Did you expect Kat to take the spotlight over Emmet?

Also, as an artist looking to get into art for games, i have a few questions regarding the art department.
1.How much of a character do they actually work on? Do they also do 3D modelling and animating, along with the basic sketches and ideas? what all do they do?
2. If they don’t do 3D work, what do they work on after a character has alrdy started/finished their animations?
3. Do you think concept art for playstation all stars will ever be released? I tend to drool at the sight of concept art…a lot XD

Hey Omar! Few questions here!
1: Will these two have the same privileges? as on disc characters? Like taunts, intros/outros, etc.?

2: Will there be more events like beat the clock and stuff? I would love to try and win a game against some of the superbots!

3: Will these two receive “Here comes a new challenger!” trailers?

Thanks so much for your hard work!

my questions useally go unanswered but I geuss I will try again

1) I was hoping for some surprise at the vga’s on some 3rd party essentials that should have been included in the game any chace of that?

2) why not confirm that kat and emmet where rivals when they were first revealed since seth dodging the question made everyone expect 2 more characters coming, because if there the only 2 charcters u think there be no reasion to not confirm there rivals since it’s obvious they had to be each other’s rivals.

3) is fearless the only new stage we be getting? Stages are as important as characters imo and 14 is a little to low and was hoping to get at least 2 new levels with the new dlc.

4) when will sirdan be buffed he is just horriable and don’t see how he got past testing being this bad

Hey Omar, I love seeing these two under-dog characters be brought into the game and being given some credit.
But I’ve noticed what may be hints or signs of possible future DLC characters, such as an FFA Title named “Paradigm Shift” which is most commonly known as a term in Final Fantasy XIII, or the fact that the most popular female character for Tekken, Nina Williams does not have an icon in the Heihachi icon category.
Is there a possibility that similar, or such things could actually be hints, or signs of future DLC or being-considered DLC?

1. Characters: It would be awesome to have Juri in the game as a Street Fighter Rep since SuperBot was planning on having one from the start. Juri has a big fanbase and would be awesome to have another female fighter(besides Kat). I’d also like Wex Major from Wild 9, Viewtiful Joe, Vexx, and Rayman.

2. Game Modes: Capture the Flag (since it was the games original design and would be fun), Free Roam, Survival(similar to horde mode of zombies), SnapShot Mode/Record Matches Mode, and CPU Fight Mode

3. Items: Why have all the hype over the Medusa head and then take it out of the final game? Its really dissatisfying. More items should be DLC.

4. Costumes: Kat and Emmett should have 3 costumes just like the other characters. For Kat, her black cat suit, Raven, and School girl out fit and Raven as her minion. Im stuck on Emmett though but Im sure SuperBot can come up with something. Hope you see my ideas and requests, Make it happen SuperBot, you’re doing great with the game! (^_^)

Hi Omar,

Great work with the DLC. It’s looking epic so far!

I do have a question. Two in fact. Firstly, is have you got a plan of the DLC you intend to give us? Like for example, Kat and Emmett in Q1 2013, Cloud and Teddie in Q2 2013 and so on. (I used Cloud (Final Fantasy 7) and Teddie (Persona 4) as an example)

Secondly, due to Nariko now having a stage, will there be a new trophy for pulling off Nariko’s Level 3 on Fearless? If the answer is yes, will we possibly be seeing a stage for Toro, Sir Daniel, Heihachi and Dante? (Would’ve added Raiden to this but he gets his trophy from Franzea)

Speaking of Sir Daniel, I emailed you guys at Superbot my feedback on Sir Daniel in regards to his balancing. Both what should be nerfed and what should be buffed using my game developer student experience to provide recommendations for fixing each nerf and buff.

I hope my email will be of use.

Love the game, a few questions.

1.Do you guys have other dlc characters that you have locked down and set aside but havent worked on yet?
2.Will we be receiving dlc 2 characters & a level mash up at a time?
3.How much can we expect to pay for the payed dlc & will it be separated or in a pack?
4.Any chances for a beautiful gravity rush level.
5.Are there any chances futuristically that we will get anything Ico or shadow of the colossus related. We Crave so much for either of the characters(which would be awesome as a pack) but at this point, we would love a level mash up,item or even just an easter egg of some sort.

Now that I think about it, A gravity rush shadow of the colossus level would be nice but you could also just mash an ico sotc level together where the collosi invade the main temple that Ico was in.

Lastly, The FAN’S request that we are able to unlock the rival & boss stages an cloned alt costumes. Please

December 5th, 6:19 pm

I’ve got to say, these additions look & sound really good. I’m definitely looking forward to them, as much fun as I’m having with the current ones. And now, I will obligatorily name characters that I want to see.

Mortal Kombat Rep (Scorpion, Sub-Zero or Sonya Blade)
Lara Croft
Ametarasu from Okami
Garrus from Mass Effect (Celebrate the new ME1 release?)

Hey Omar, just a few questions I hope you can answer:

1) How exactly does the belt system work? Any chance you can give the fans an explanation via Playstation blog or something?

2)You once said there was a character who you wanted for this game, but due to “different” visions between you and the developer the character didn’t make the cut. Any chance you can tell me who that was?(My money’s on Spyro or Lara Croft)

3) Are you guys working with Square to get a FF rep into this game/(preferably Cloud, also add Tomba!)

4) This may seem far-fetched, but try to get a level representing GTA! Perhaps Liberty City(GTA3 Era) or Ricardo’s Mansion from Vice City!

But there are some question i liked to ask that you didn’t hear often..

But what about the following characters:

1) Kiryu Kazama from Yakuza Serie ??
2) Zen from Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen ??
3) Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi from Onimusha Serie ??

These games has always been Playstation exclusive..
And we need some more Japanese characters.

Can’t wait for the new DLC. I will definitely try to main Kat when she comes as I’ve always loved her character. I’m also liking the tight spacing of the new stage. Before release when I first saw most of the stages in this game I was disappointed because I like bigger more open stages in this kind of game, but once I played it after release and realized how much of an emphasis this game has on evasion, I found myself enjoying the game more on smaller maps where it’s harder for opponents to keep away.

I just have a question/suggestion . . .

Have you guys even considered trying to get Sora from the Kingdom Hearts series? If you aren’t familiar with his fighting style just look up gameplay videos from the games, though I’m sure you guys are already familiar with it as the series is one of the most popular from PS3’s history. His fighting style would fit in perfectly in All-Stars with his keyblade and AP moves. The core numbered Kingdom Hearts games (I & II) are PS3 exclusives. I think he should be the number one choice for a JRPG character before getting someone from Final Fantasy, though Lightning from FFXIII series is good too. Please consider it Superbot. He is my dream all-star and many are wanting a JRPG character.

Not free, of course, but at a very affordable price for each DLC. Similar to what Riot does to League of Legends.

Well, I hope you guys create more DLC characters in the future. I honestly love DLC in the making for games. It makes it feel alive.

I want Atlas and Peabody from Portal 2 to come into the mix. Their attacks would be dropping a turret, throwing edgeless safety cubes, opening portals to get around the map, and shooting some of the speed and bouncy goop around.

Tier 1 super – Opens a portal under enemy who falls infinitely until the floor closes and collides with the ground and dies

Tier 2 super – GladOs comes in and smacks everywhere within her long arm radius

Tier 3 Super – Shoots a portal on the moon that everyone gets sucked into and floats into space where the bot comes in and shouts Space, Space, I love Space, S-P-A-C-E SPACE! Then everyone dies lol

Big Sister (Bioshock 2)
Elizabeth (Bioshock Infinite)
Cloud (Final Fantasy)
Alex Mercer (Prototype)
Altair or Connor (Assassin’s Creed)
False King or Yurt, the Silent Chief (Demon’s Souls)
Wander (Shadow of the Colussus)
Stranger (Oddworld)
Daedalus or some Chimera (Resistance)
Vamp (Metal Gear Solid)

Some maps I’d love

Modnation Racers x Gravity Rush
Shadow of the Colussus x Stardust
Rapture (Bioshock 1) x Escape Plan
Portal 2 x Flow

Am I the only person amazed that Demon Souls hasn’t even been mentioned by anyone? I mean they have so many characters that would be perfect for this! and plus its a PS3 Original

2.) Will The Fearless Stage have any Hazards?

3.) Is it too early to ask about the Taunts?

Thanks Sony :) My only wish (and I just keep my hopes held high) is to see Klonoa from Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. He is my favorite character, and I happen to know him since I was little and I played this game on the PSone when i was 6.

In my original roster some characters i’d love to see:

Klonoa from Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (namco)

Dan Forterque from Medievil (Sony)

Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4(konami)

Cloud, Sora,or Lightning from Final Fantasy series (Square Enix)

Dante from Devil May Cry 3 (cap com)

I was so happy to see Dante and Dan, but also I’d love to see Klonoa since it started in the PSone.

yeah they totally nerfed my main raiden, even for the new players at this game, you cant even do his 30 character objective thanks to that new bug

I am really liking everything about PSAS,but the following: Some level 2 supers are better than their level 3 superiors. Certain characters stand no chance against others in 1v1. Certain level 1’s such as Raidens are acquired way too easy and its a good super. Raiden has to have more of a risk in his playstyle or something. The menu…is just so basic..I am not sure if this game was made quickly just to get its name heard then start on the next part in the franchise or what, but the menu should be redone a few pictures some side bars and there ya go new menu. Lastly some of the major “MONEYMAKING” faces were not included in the ship roster, which might have been certain IP holder “greed”.

Other than that this game has made a bigger step than the very first Smash Brothers on N64. They are both fun games and I hope that if there is a 2nd game in this franchise that it makes as big of a SPLASH as SSB Melee did. And i know everyone remembers that “If you had a Gamecube, you had SB Melee”. I really have a huge amount of hope for this game and its DLC “COULD” change everything but COULD is a big word

Lets all just hope that this game continues to make a bigger SPLASH so it can (((CRASH!!!))) the competition!!! >:D
