PSN Maintenance Scheduled for Thursday, January 17th

Hi everyone! 2013 is off to a roaring start here on PSN, with tons of great games and promotions for PlayStation gamers, from the God of War: Ascension Multiplayer Beta for PlayStation Plus users, to the recent digital release of PS3 favorite Demon’s Souls, to pre-orders going live for the digital version of Dead Space 3.

In order to continue bringing you the best online games experience on PSN, we will perform routine maintenance beginning the morning of Thursday, January 17th. This maintenance will start at approximately 8:00AM PT (9:00AM MT / 10:00AM CT / 11:00 AM ET) and last until around 8:00PM PT (9:00PM MT / 10:00PM CT / 11:00PM ET). During the maintenance period, you may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access PSN.

The PlayStation Store and Account Management will not be available during the maintenance period, but you will be able to access online play and apps provided that you have signed into PlayStation Network at some point between now and the time of the maintenance. So please be sure to sign in now if you wish to access the Network during Thursday’s maintenance window.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you for your support.

    So just to be clear, if I don’t sign in on Thursday morning before work, I won’t be able to watch Netflix when I get home that night?

      You simply need to sign in at some point between now and the maintenance window. Even a quick, single sing in between now and then will flag your account as “good to go” for that time period.

      You do not need to remain signed on. Just simply sign on a single time between now and the window, and you’ll be all set.

    #1 To be clear-it specifically states: “you will be able to access online play and apps provided that you have signed into PlayStation Network at some point between now and the time of the maintenance.”

    The post says you need to have signed on AT SOME POINT between now and time of maintenance. You don’t have to keep your PS3/Vita on all that time. This happens just about every time they do maintenance.

    True, kratos and Solid Snake are playstation’s most iconic characters, anyways so I played black ops 2 last night so that means I’m good to go during maintenance?

      I’d love to see that! It would be something up to Hasbro and Sanrio in the end, though. If I ever hear of this being discussed, you can bet I’ll support it, though!

    Honestly, I’ve done that, I get on my PS3 daily, the last time there was a maintenance and I was on earlier that day it happened, Boom while it was happening it would not let me sign it. Keep your fingers crossed on Thursday!!

    @14 What I do is I leave my ps3 on 24/7, turning it off once in awhile, but I remain signed into PSN as you never know what I might plan to do. I’m already left my 360 running with the vents toward me as a small heater.

    I don’t care either way. I don’t plan my life around PSN. The two last maintenance cycles the only way to have known why the network was down was to check the EU blog. They told us days in advance, SCEA put a post on the BLOG after the maintenance, or close to the start.

      Folks can also check the @PlayStation twitter feed or the SCEA Community Forums. Sometimes shorter maintenance periods are communicated a bit earlier there. But your point is noted!

    I’m not sure whether to be happy you guys are routinely working to improve the psn network or worried that you even have to do it this much.

    doesn’t matter too much though since Netflix still works.

    Hi Paul, this is a bit off topic, but perhaps you can help.

    I have been downloading the TV Series Young Justice off PSN, except Season 2 episode 10 is not available. It aired the weekend of 1/5/13. Episode 11 is available now, so episode 10 is effectively missing. Is there anyone at Sony who can address this to the appropriate channels? I was hoping to eventually download the whole season once it has completed, but not if an episode is unavailable.

    I left a comment on the PS Blog “New on Music and Video Unlimited” entry a few days ago, but got no response. Perhaps this query could be passed to Jeff Safran?

    Is this maintenance related to how the “new” PS Store gradually slows down with each minute you spend time in it? Well, I hope so, because if it isn’t, then you guys better put the old storefront back. The slowdowns eventually freeze the PS3, but don’t count as crashes, weirdly enough. That’s how slow the system’s reaction time becomes when you spend too much time in one go! It does get better when you get out of the store and then go back in, but that would be silly.

    Also, the search function is kinda impractical, looking for add-ons is a real mess if there are more than 3 digits in amount (sorting would work wonders if it was applied in these sections, as well), and the Downloads List still doesn’t have “sort and filter” functions.This “new” storefront is an obvious beta, and still needs a lot of cleaning up with it.

    I hope this maintenance includes a fix to the YouTube app, which loads and allows me to browse videos in my subscriptions, but doesn’t successfully stream any videos anymore. The app was so good initially. I don’t know what happened to it.

    Additionally, I hope that the maintenance clears up an issue, where there is no download for the full copy of Super Stardust HD. I bought that years ago, but since I had to buy a new PS3 (and critically since the PSN store redesign), the full application is nowhere to be found. I can tolerate the new super slow PSN store, but not having access to a game I purchased in full years ago is pretty frustrating.

    @26 Youtube recently updated their app. Try deleting and reinstalling it.

    As for Super Stardust HD, does it show up in your download list?

    @27 I tried deleting YouTube and reinstalling, as well as deleting any associated application data. Unfortunately, I got exactly the same result after reinstalling. This is on a wired ADSL connection running at about 15Mbps DL, which is more than enough for my computer. Could this be an issue only for my new PS3, the new skinny model? It seems unlikely. Is YouTube streaming properly for you?

    As for Super Stardust HD, it does show up in my download list. Strangely, when I download that file and attempt to install it, it appears to be a PSP file. Yet I’ve never owned a PSP, nor have I downloaded a PSP game. I used Super Stardust for years on my original fat PS3. I’ve only had to reinstall it since my old machine died. I’ve talked with Sony’s support about the issue, and they say they know about the issue and are trying to solve it. I’ve gotten this response twice over the last couple months. The PSN store is effectively a web server. I don’t see what’s so hard about determining where the correct Super Stardust HD application is on the server and assuring that the link to the full PS3 copy points to the correct file.

    @28 Mine is like 30Mbps or so last I checked. Youtube is working for me, since i delete the app once in awhile and the save game for it, which has the account info stored in it.

    I just searched the store for Super Stardust HD and it shows up. Store page says its a PS3 PSN game.

    fix the FAR CRY3 PS3 server its annoying when your ranked up but it takes it away from you when you end online match & the host migration kicks out players too often, ohh another thing theres serious glitches in online gameplay where the enemy is like flying somehow!!

    I also noted that after update 1.02 on the store. My store slowed way down, then after a few minutes blanked out and went to the xmb without notice.

    Good! Can you guys PLEASE fix the store because I CONSTANTLY have problems downloading games on my PS3 ever since you gave us the new store. I bought Killzone HD on 12/18 and the only way I’ve been able to download it is by starting Joe Danger, going to the Store DLC option, which brings up the old store, then going to my downloads and trying it there. But no matter what, IT NEVER INSTALLS. NEVER.

    I basically just wasted 15 bucks, well more like I gave you guys my 15 bucks for no reason.

    PLEASE FIX THESE ISSUES. I’ve been dying to play Killzone HD for the longest time, and it looks like my only option is to get the freakin trilogy, even though I already have 2 & 3.

    HELP!

    Yeah I really hope this maintenance fixes the slow loading time to initially bring up the PSN store and even the actual browsing of it & fixes the Youtube app of always freezing and crashing. I know Youtube just had an update, it’s a lil better, but still needs work!

    any news for any new update for the ps3? I mean more compatibility with the vita like Showing in the ps3 what game one its playing on the vita or show u online on the ps3 when u are on the vita??? any news for a vita update too?

    @29 I was really optimistic that the YouTube update would fix the problem, but in fact it didn’t help at all, after deleting the application and the save data. I know it’s not a matter of bandwidth. 15Mbps is more than enough and YouTube does variable streaming for people with really slow connections, iirc. I’ve read around, and other people have made the same complaints. When you attempt to stream a video, it seems to never buffer and load as it normally would, and if you attempt to cancel the video, it can actually crash your PS3. The effect is repeatable. For anyone suffering this issue, I’ve found at least that letting the video time out on its own will bring up an error but not crash your PS3. I gave it a shot for quite a while, trying to find a working video, but nothing works. It’s sad, because I was really satisfied with the YouTube app when it was initially released.

    @29 As for Super Stardust HD, it does show up in the PSN store, but the download is the wrong file. Somehow, I believe during the PSN store update, the link to the file got messed up. I can download the demo, but there’s no way to re-authorize my ownership of the full game. In fact, I’m pretty sure that nobody can currently purchase the full version of Super Stardust HD, from the North American PSN. Maybe Sony hasn’t noticed because the game is old enough that sales are miniscule anyway, but I bet Housemarque still cares about sales.

      Update: From XMB, try going to Account Management > Transaction Management > Download List
      From there find your SSDHD listing and download from there. It should install just fine. I confirmed by deleting the game and following these steps on my account. Good luck.

    On that note of the updates, recent one’s I seen didn’t have any info on it when your updating the PS3, noticed a few that had it before the update, a few that had it after the update. When there’s a firmware update, I’d like to see what it’s updating. Especially if it’s a option update.
