DUST 514’s Open Beta Goes Live Today

Atli Már Sveinsson's Avatar Posted by (CCP Praetorian), Creative Director, CCP Games

Pioneering PlayStation community! We’ve reached an exciting milestone in our development of DUST 514: the open beta. Some of you may already be familiar with the concept after having followed our dev blogs or news articles, or perhaps you have been helping us in the closed beta. But some may be hearing about this for the first time. I would like to give you guys a quick overview on the game, and the new phase of development, the open beta.

What is DUST 514?

DUST is a PS3-exclusive triple-A free-to-play MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online first person shooter), directly set in and connected in real time with the science fiction universe of EVE Online.

DUST 514

What that means is that not only is DUST a full-fledged MMOFPS in its own right, with unrivaled persistence and customization, it also coexists on the same servers as its older PC sibling, EVE Online. DUST and EVE share several game systems such as mail, text and voice chat, corporations, the in-game market and more.

Not only are the players of the two games able to communicate with each other and belong to the same social institutions, they can also interact in real time. Spaceship captains of EVE Online are able to provide real-time support in the form of orbital bombardments to the boots on the ground, the DUST 514 mercenaries, all while coordinating in a shared voice chat.

Mercenary? Empire Builder?

In DUST, you are an immortal clone soldier. Initially you are a mercenary, and at any point in the game you are free to choose your own path.

DUST 514

DUST 514DUST 514

You accept contracts issued by warring corporations, in the process earning both ISK (Interstellar Kredits, the in-game currency) and skill points. With these earnings you purchase and upgrade skills that affect your in-game abilities, in addition to unlocking advanced equipment such as dropsuits, weapons, vehicles, modules and more.

The game features an in-depth dropsuit and vehicle customisation system that allows you to define your role on the battlefield to respond to whatever tactical situation you may encounter. Battles are fought in districts located on planets in the EVE Universe (we have about 7,000 temperate planets out of a total of 50,000). Districts are generated with modular components where the type and location of the planet are taken into consideration, the goal being to make every battle experience unique (there are literally billions of combinations).

Now, in the beginning you may limit yourself to accepting contracts from warring NPC corporations, but over time you may find like-minded individuals to group up with and form a Corporation, which is our version of a clan or guild.

DUST 514

As an organised corporation, you and your colleagues may decide to venture out into the great unknown and claim your own piece of territory, thereby affecting the political landscape of the New Eden universe. You might even find yourself forging alliances with EVE players, and through a combined effort, performing coordinated strikes upon your enemies.

Free to Play

DUST is completely free-to-play for anyone with a PS3 and can be downloaded directly from the PSN store. There are no restrictions. All features, maps, game modes, skills, dropsuits, vehicles and module groups are fully accessible, and since it’s a massive multiplayer game you’ll never run out of content; the war never ends.

While DUST 514 does offer exclusive items that must be bought with AUR credits (our microtransaction currency, purchased through the PSN store), it’s important to note that these items do not provide players with an unfair in-game advantage. Unlike most other console games, our expansions are free to download. While you can purchase AUR items for real money, in the game, you will never need to pay for a map pack. DUST is a free to play MMO that will be maintained and evolved for years to come.

DUST 514: Dropsuits Group

Always Evolving

DUST has been in closed beta for about a year now, with a small group of dedicated players that have given us invaluable support and assistance with their feedback and suggestions. The game has gone through an amazing transformation this past year. We’ve released multiple patches and expansions, each bringing performance improvements, new features and bug fixes. We have gone from our own small development servers to the much larger shared EVE / DUST test server (Singularity), and we’ve done countless character wipes and inventory resets along the way.

These last few weeks have seen tests of core DUST / EVE link features such as the corporation system and orbital bombardment, and a major migration of DUST from its closed test servers onto Tranquility (EVE Online’s global server).

We are now ready to open the game up to a wider audience by moving to an Open Beta. There will be no more character wipes or inventory resets. We will lift all access restrictions to our servers. Anyone with a PS3 and a PSN account can download the game, create a character and join in on the fun. We will be updating the game regularly, soliciting feedback from you on our forums, balancing and tuning, replacing and polishing.

Rapid Deployment Vehicle (RDV) for DUST 514 for PS3 (PSN)

This is a first of its kind in gaming, a merging of two communities from two very different game genres, in real time in the same setting and on the same server. Already players in both games have formed corporations and alliances. Emergent tactics are cropping up all over the galaxy. This would not be possible if it hadn’t been for the amazing support we have had from our friends at Sony, our shared vision for the future of online gaming, and the openness of the free PlayStation Network.

We couldn’t be more excited to be part of this and we hope you join us on this journey.

What’s wrong with you guys? No beta until the store updates. And what part of free to play do you not understand. This game is 100% free. And they probably won’t have trophies until final release. No beta has trophies.

@19 Just because the game is free-to-play does not mean the game is bad. DUST 514 has been planned to be a free-to-play game ever since CCP started developing it. Look at PC, there are thousands and thousands of free-to-play games and they are one of the most played PC games.. Look at League of Legends, it’s a free-to-play game but is one of the most played games on PC, if not the most played PC game with almost 1.3 billion hours of activity in a time period from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.. So please don’t just judge a game without really thinking about it, and I am assuming you haven’t even played the beta yet.

I have been playing the Closed Beta since last June. The game has made leaps and strides since then and is shaping up nicely. However, there is still much work to be done…and hopefully the Open Beta will get us the rest of the way.

If you are a PS3 owner and a shooter fan, then you owe it to yourself to give Dust 514 a try. Help us shape this into the best PlayStation exclusive shooter-experience it can be. Take your time, learn the rope, and most of all…tell everyone on your Friends List because the game is so much better with friends :)

Happy Hunting!!

“umm who said the expansions would be free?”

“Unlike most other console games, our expansions are free to download.”

The beta is looking great! as many others have said, this beta has made leaps and bounds since release.
To anyone new, jump in and try it! don’t trust first impressions, this game requires several hours to learn. If you don’t do good for the first couple of matches. Just keep trying! You just might get the hang of it!

For those of you who can’t wait to get in, you can create your characters before the store updates, that way you can jump right into the action after the (pretty big) download.

I think this link leads to the character creator: dust514.com/user/characters/

Here are some decent tips for newcomers while you’re all waiting: dust514.org/home/item/four-tips-that-may-come-in-handy-as-you-first-enter-the-challenging-world-of-dust-514

Woops, wrong link. I think you’ll need to log in with your PSN and verify your account to get to the character creator: dust514.com/signup/

Hello Dust friends :)

I’ve been playing for a couple months and I’m in an awesome Corp. If anyone’s interested in checking us out, we’re the 843 Burgezz-Elites. Look us up in Dust – Search for 843 – BurgezzE. T. F. Or look me up – BadWolf-Jody. Really looking forward to playing with new people :)

Anyone interested in joining a dust corporation can go to d3lr.net to take a look at d3ath d3alers. We are a sizable eve and dust corporation and are always looking for new mercenaries and pilots to join up. You can also apply in game to “d3ath d3alers”

Please forgive my really stupid question, but is this a game where you fight other people? I’m not very good at online combat. I’m more of a PvE than PvP . :-)

CodyKing69 said:

All you do is fight

Novaphaux said:

This is not a typical console beta where they already shipped the games on disk and are letting you play a week early.

This is more akin to an MMO on PC beta and many are very long.
Star War Galaxies was 9 months long for its invite beta, friends and family started much earlier.

The other reason why this beta was so long a few months ago players made one heck of a protest to get corporation function in, a feature slated for the first expansion which in the end delayed the “launch” build to the originally planned expansion which is 2013 summer.

Last Major Feature Slated for the Beta is Faction Warfare Iteration. This will allow players to actually champion a NPC faction and fight to control 300+ odd planets with 10 districts apiece. Right now though its possible to do some of this its more of a proof of concept. The iterated version would be more meaningful and even includes beginnings of war declaring ability.

Overall the game is very incomplete, and won’t be bare minimum complete for probably a year. None the less free to play come back anytime you get bored with other shooters, you might be in for a surprise.

Man MAG and Resistance 2 are both better than Dust 514.

MAG and Resistance 2 have 64 player fights. this game is a weak 48 player, and still sluggish compared to these old titles on the same system.

and at least Resistance 2 has some PvE thats also good. Dust 514 does not even have PvE at all.

Scrap this junk.

if CCP wanted to make a MMOFPS than make a real MMOFPS like Planetside 2 does. Not some lobby based FPS shooter like BF3 is.

If you were simply going with the large scale Lobby FPS, than maybe you should have asked Sony if you could mod MAG’s engine to make the game. Would have been better than this crap.

ALL THE WHINING ….Oh Boo Hoo, my free game isn’t perfect and under current development. Jesus H. Christ, find a real problem to MOAN about . If they said hey it’s done that’s it and charged you for it. Now that would be a REAL problem. This is R and D in action. Not instant gratification. I just finished feeding a few hundred Homeless folks in the cold rain. Bet they would love to be able to play DUST 514 beta in that comfy chair in your home. World’s got real problems.

Chibaku said:

#93 is a troll, what he says is the complete opposite of this game. Though PVE will be comming in the next build.
The battles compete for districts on planets on the EVE Online PC game. This is NOT a lobby FPS like BF3 and is BETTER than BF3, MAG, and Resistance 2. When this game is complete it will be way more in depth, fun, and better looking than Planetside 2.

Been playing for a few days now and I gotta admit that I like it. It would be nice if there was more game modes than just Ambush and Skirmish but maybe you get more if you join a corp (maybe not). And the learning curve is a tad deep for a FPS but its one of the things that make it seem like your entering a large gaming universe and its one of the things that drew me in, trying to figure everything out. Actually kinda reminiscent of my first time playing Fallout 3… except with a lot more shooting. All in all looking forward to seeing where they go with all this potential.
