From Ashes: God of War: Ascension Live-Action Trailer Explores Kratos’ Origins

Like God of War

If you’re an ardent PlayStation fan, you’ve no doubt seen the teasers. Today, I’m extremely excited to share the final, full-length version of our “From Ashes” live action trailer for God of War: Ascension, featuring a special arrangement of Ellie Goulding’s “Hanging On.” This is just about the biggest production we’ve ever undertaken for a God of War commercial or trailer — or for any PS3 game for that matter. We are very proud of how it turned out, and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Everyone knows Kratos has anger management issues; he will stop at nothing to get revenge on Ares and all of the gods that have betrayed him. In God of War 1-3, **SPOILER ALERT** we got to experience Kratos’ quest for vengeance as he took down Ares, and literally climbed his way to the top of Olympus to defeat Zeus himself. God of War: Ascension, however, is set before the first God of War game. Through the course of the story, we get to see a more human side of Kratos as he deals with the pain and loss of having just lost everything he has ever loved. We worked closely with Imaginary Forces, the creative minds behind some of the gorgeous cutscenes in Ascension and some of the past God of War games, and Santa Monica Studio to bring Kratos and his family to life, paying careful attention to each minute detail.

If you are like most other red-blooded Americans, you’re probably going to be watching the Super Bowl this coming Sunday. If you happen to watch the game streaming online—an increasingly popular way to enjoy the big game—or have it streaming as your second-screen info source for the game, you’ll be able to catch a unique one-minute version of the trailer airing during the Super Bowl live stream.

God of War: Ascension on PS3

If the recent single-player gameplay video left you hungry for more news about the epic single campaign waiting for you in the game, you are in luck. That was just the tip of the iceberg. We hosted a media event last night with a bunch of the top gaming media in the country to show off the first half hour or so of the game. Watch for their in-depth impressions to start popping up online today.

In the meantime, here are a couple of brand-new screenshots from the single player campaign. Look for more screens of your favorite Spartan warrior in the online preview coverage, along with playthrough videos of the spectacular opening of the game showing some brand new attacks, areas, enemies and more.

If that wasn’t enough reason to go out and pre-order, don’t forget that you’ll be able to sample the next PS3-exclusive from Naughty Dog, creators of the amazing Uncharted series, before anyone else. If you hadn’t heard yet, there will be an exclusive-access demo of The Last of Us that will only be accessible via God of War: Ascension’s main menu prior to the launch of TLOU.

I literally had chills going down my spine from watching that trailer. I can’t believe it’s finally here. Just 6 more weeks…just 6 more weeks…

God of War series is by far my favorite series. The only thing that’s causing my vengeance is the wait that I’ll have to endure before God of War IV comes out on the PS4. Bah!!

Can’t wait to pick up my collectors edition! =)

Huge God of War fan. Yet, this game still kept falling off my radar for some reason. THIS trailer, just solidified a pre-order. Amazing job PlayStation.

I feel like they don’t even need to make a movie now, might as well cancel it. This was perfect, and captured any emotion a big 2 hour movie could possibly capture. It would just be this but with a whole bunch of money wasted on big ass action sequences. So might as well not even do it, just show this in theaters during the previews lol.

Kratos is the God of SuperBowl now though. No other commercial for entertainment will be able to get anywhere NEAR this caliber. Once again the gaming industry laughs in the face of the movie industry.

Wait so this wont be broadcasted on TV? Ah what a shame. It could’ve really raised the eye brows of a lot of non-gamers and show them what they’ve been missing out on.

Splathew said:

February 1st, 3:11 pm

It costs about 4 million for a 30 second Ad during the Super Bowl. This trailer is 2 minutes long…

Vcheese said:

February 1st, 3:30 pm

Excellent dude!! I loved how you managed to hide kratos ´s face the most you could, it is better that way, not because he looks bad or anything but the face has to be almost identical to the one of the character to look good. I would like to see more trailers like this for other games and hope to watch them on tv too!!!

Sony, P L E A S E F I X Y O U R L O G I N F O R i O S & m o b i l e d e v i c e s ! ! ! !

There is a problem when trying to log into [removed] on a mobile device.
I’ve tried this on an iPod Touch 4 (Via both Google Chrome and Safari) and a Kindle Fire HD (via Silk)
and on all of them it redirects them to a non-existent page.

I emailed this to PS Customer Service and they replied with this useless tidbit…
“I recommend trying to view this site on your Personal Computer
(PC) to be able to view this information.

Thank you for contacting PlayStation® Support today.”

So this once worked perfectly, now it doesn’t and hasn’t for 4 weeks and your fix for this..

Just like New Super Mario Bros, these games are all the exact same. Rehash after rehash.

Not a fan of the linear QTE set piece shallow gameplay and easy puzzles for kindergartners. Maybe if the developers put less emphasis on flash instead of substance that these games would be much much better.

Every God of War game is a copy and paste from the previous one. Oh, but it has competitive multiplayer – OH WOWIE!

Was hoping Sony would be smart with this series, but it’s not really about the quality I guess. As long as it sells. Regardless this is a nice trailer for a milked series at this point.

I’m only having a Super Bowl Party at my house because I want all my friends to see this Epic Live trailer for God of War at the same time as me.

I enjoyed the LAT and I can’t wait for the release of God of War. I will purchase the PS3 Legacy bundle, because I want that Red PS3.

Also @NeonReaver, define Milked. This is the second game on the PS3 that is not an HD remake.

Good job Sony. Freaking good job. God of War is one of my favorite franchises ever and this commercial really hit home. Anybody who had played the first game as many times as I have will be touched by this commercial. In fact I am calling this the best Sony ad since Kevin Butler. I am going to replay the whole series again just to prepare for this game. Thanks again Sony for bringing Kratos back to the PS3 one last time.

SolduNuts said:

February 4th, 9:36 am

I keep replaying this video and I am now convinced this is the best commercial ever. Knowing the story behind Kratos adds a lot to it but I literally get goose bumps every time I watch it. Sony, give yourselves a big pat on the back for this one.

This seems like a no-brainer but this commercial should be available for download on the PS3. Who else thinks so, I can’t keep going to Youtube, I would much prefer it on my system where I can remote view it on my Vita!
