PlayStation Evolution: The Beginning

PlayStation’s arrival to the world of gaming signaled a change in the status quo and a sign of things to come. The original PlayStation system emerged in 1994 in Japan as a dark horse challenger, a seemingly outgunned newcomer entering a crowded field dominated by legends of the 16-bit era. PlayStation’s advanced technology and innovative controller design won raves with critics and gamers, and in 1995, the system expanded to North America, Europe, and Australia. Accompanied by a powerful salvo of titles including WipEout, Crash Bandicoot, and Gran Turismo, PlayStation’s rapid rise marked the end of one era of videogames and the dawn of another. The world was never the same.

Be sure to visit our YouTube page in the coming days as we present the evolution of PlayStation and recap our greatest moments. Then, be the first to know on February 20th, 2013 at 6:00pm Eastern Time.

  • Thanks for the history lesson!

I was introduced to the PS at a buddies house…playing as a big mechanical bunny rabbit! You could jump super high throughout 3D platformy levels, for some reason “Jumping Jack Flash” jumps out at me.

Those lap replays from Gran Turismo took me back, thanks.

I’m all aboard looking to the future!

  • Wednesday, why aren’t you here already?!?!
Please Playstation, make an astonishing link between the Vita and this new Playstation!
An awesome one. Thank you! ;D

  • I know they’re gonna be live streaming starting at 6:00pm Eastern Standard Time ( so says their FB page )

Any chances of live streaming it on PSHome as well?

  • So, this touch surface that might be on the ps4 controller, will yah or any 3rd party actually use it? The Six axis was a complete waste. Don’t know why yah didn’t tell companies like THQ to use the six axis, like shaking it to get out of submissions. Will any of the stuff you put in get used? Will the move get used at all? Will yah finally do something innovative that every 3rd party will adapt into their games?

  • PlayStation is legendary! Been with PlayStation for more than a decade and im looking foward to another decade of Sony and PlayStation awesomness!

  • That video brought back great memories… Memories of when Sony actually marketed their systems. Don’t think I’ve seen any type of advertisement for the Vita (outside of dedicated gaming sources) in over 9 months.

  • …And then history was made… I seriously cannot wait until the 20th =)

  • As a long time Playstation fan, owner of a ps1, ps2, 2 ps3’s, 2 Psp 3000, 2 pspGo’s and a Ps Vita, here are the things the top 5 things that sony needs to do right with the ps4.
    (1) 1 universal PSN account that carries over all my ps3 digital purchases to the ps4.
    (2) About 5 AAA Launce titles. All 5 1st party titles need to make an appearance within the 1st 6 months of the ps4 launch. Uncharted/ Wipeout/ Killzone/ Ratchet & Clank/ Gran Turismo would be perfect.
    (3) TRUE NEXT GEN LEAP. not that cookie cutter Mid-Gen leap of that other console. I want to see high end pc graphics out the gate on this bad boy.
    (4) Vita + Ps4 compatability. Cross play/ Cross Buy/ Remote Play should all be ready on day 1.
    (5) Backward compabality of ALL ps3 titles. Listen, I love my ps3 and will purchase the ps4 on day 1, but I also only want 1 console hooked up to my tv. And I want that console to play all of my current pse titles as well as my new ps4 titles.
Thanks for the good times ps3, but I will have a new girlfriend come XMas. Keep on Gaming.

  • 5 more days!

  • hilarious i cannot watch this video on my vita come on sony get full html 5 support for vita alrady its tje only thing keeping the vita from being the best device in history

  • I’m not even a console fan boy, but I just wish that Sony will reveal something really good.

I trust in their history of inventing hd recording technology for post production and I wish they can keep up bringing inventions on consumer level too.

  • Sony, please do NOT add backwards compatibility in the PS4. I would rather have a monster of a system that ONLY plays PS4 and PSN titles at an affordable price, rather than a fully backwards-compatible system that is much more expensive.

Make the b/c whiners keep their PS3s and PS2s if they want to play PlayStation games from previous generations.

I do it, and so can they.

  • My body is ready Sony.

  • My everything is ready. Bring on PS4!

  • I can´t wait, this is gonna be awesome, just the next wednesday ..
Sony, you should announce, including the PS4, some good games like Infamous 3, Uncharted 4, killzone 4, that would be great :)

  • Smart and provocative campaign.

Please bring this back sony. You used to be really really good at marketing and advertisement. Even going up to the PSP. When the PSP first launched so many people were blown away. And the marketing ad with “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand where you see the PSP travel from japan to the customer was gold. And of course going back further the playstation underground was amazing too. I got in that right as it was ending.

Also since the PS1 was such a groundbreaking console. Release more PS1 titles and make em all vita compatible. That will be a great way to honor the legacy.

I really am excited for the PS4 launch. I hope past mistakes, past success, and feedback about the PS3 and an overall idea of the gaming/media market gave your company the insight to deliver with the PS4.

And make the Vita and PS4 connect in ways that was impossible for PS3 and Vita.

Thank you sony. Can’t wait until the 20th.

  • Bring back AGGRESSIVE and GREAT marketing if you want to be on top again SONY.

  • For example… why is SONY not showing off their PS+ in comparison to the 360? There SHOULD be a commercial comparing 2 people… one who pays $50 a year just to play online on his console…. and one who pays $50 a year to get 80 games to play!!!! Why has this not been done? Seems you guys don’t want to sell your console sometimes… at least to me….. step up your marketing skills, there is a LOT you could be doing that you have missed out on. Regardless.. looking forward to the PS4. Just hope you spread the word about your amazing exclusive games as well…. don’t let exclusives suffer like they did on PS3. It’s why some great devs have had to shut down………………

  • Great video! Really nice to see Sony highlighting their past achievements. I truly can’t wait for the reveal on February 20th. I truly hope that Sony has learned a lot from the current generation battle. I truly love the Playstation platform and want to see the platform become the dominant platform it once was. I hope that what we see on 2/20 is a console that truly delivers in the power department but also a console that truly embraces the social aspect of gaming. I would like to see a console that has a universal game invite system at the OS level, cross game chat, and party chat. I think it’s also imperative for the PSN to remain a free service.

  • The newest reveal is that the ps4 will stream ps3 games to the console so you can still play ps3 games. Of course you will have to re-purchase them more than likely. It would be awesome if that was not the case though. Perhaps you put a blue ray in and it can tell that you own the disc so you can stream it for free.

  • @oo7PorscheMGS

The current market doesn’t take to kindly to comparison commercials. People in the Politically Correct age of today want to hear why they need your product, not why the other product is worse than yours. They can still achieve your commercial if they show the buyer that it’s the next hot thing and something they can’t live without.

  • Im already excited enough for next wednesday and now you release this?!?!?! O_O TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT…. :)

  • one thing I really think the new one needs is easily upgradable hard drive. I loved how easy it was to replace my fat’s 60 gig for a 750 (minus the easily stripped screws in the caddy) Make self upgrading possible. Not just hard drives, but future proof it by making expansion ports and the likes.

WHAT frggin planet are you living on Twin? There’s commercials like that all the time, and I’m honestly surprised they havent’ done it either. Christ I see PRODUCTS with that on their LABELS. “we do this and they don’t” kinda thing on the label..

  • Guess my kotaku link will never make it through moderation.

Newest reports claim the ps4 will stream ps3 games. Hopefully we’ll be able to put a disc in and stream for free instead of having to rebuy a game. That would be rough! :D

  • @ all y’all lol… either way, I think they should be showing off the value of PS+ and playstation’s exclusives / features in general a lot more.

And yea I too don’t see what is wrong about highlighting what is better than the competition. Maybe you don’t have to mention the competition directly, but making sure people know your online is FREE and that for $50 you can add AMAZING value on TOP of “FREE” is a no brainer… again, at least for me… not sure why their marketing has been so TERRIBLE this generation.

  • What if the announcemehnt is along this title format
    PS the beginning
    PS 2 the middle
    PS3 the end.
And this is sony’s announcement that they aren’t doing games any more?

  • I don’t really think I would buy a new Sony console. I don’t believe Sony cares about me as a customer to be honest. I have had two issues with the PS3 for about a year now and nobody can help me. I have called multiple times and had many people hang up on me and still the issues are still present. I had one great employee tell me its not a big deal and don’t worry that problem. What kind of employee says a problem is not a big deal. Also another person told me they don’t know how to help and to ask in the forums would be a better solution which to me is a really bad answer since if Sony makes the Software for the PS3 they should know about all the problems that could occur and how to fix them.

I wished someone would read this from Sony and call me tomorrow to solve the two issues that I have with my PS3 it would make me feel 100 times better . And make me feel that someone actually cares.

  • Oh man im extremely excited, i cant hold it anymore but one rumor has me worried, it is rumored that Evolution Studios will reveal a New IP instead of Motorstorm ps4 while i do love New IPs I LOVE Motorstorm and that would be a huge disappointment to me, the only way i could ever forgive you sony if Motorstorm is not a launch title is if you guys end up the event showing The Last Guardian running on ps4 hardware and announcing the game as ps4 launch title, thats the only game that will make me forgive you for not giving me Motorstorm at launch. Anyways im ready, bring it on sony.

  • And trust me, I don’t care about SONY’s profits… I care about the creative developers / games that don’t sell and then these A+ developers go out of business! The socom team, the wipeout team, the Starhawk / Warhawk team… Why HAVE great 1st party or exclusive developers if you’re not going to give them ALL the extra boost of “exclusive” marketing HIGHLIGHTING those unique / great games?

I HONESTLY think that if SONY marketed Resistance 3 (besides just some Kevin Butler commercial and releasing it before Halo which had way more marketing power…) and Ratchet and Clank in general WAY better, INSOMNIAC games might actually have had a reason to stick with SONY. You gotta give developers the respect (marketing support!) they’ve earned if they’re making GREAT games for YOUR system. And you’ve gotta do it in the right way too. That R3 commercial showed more of the sharpshooter than R3’s beauty. Same thing with the Socom 4 commercial. Why not highlight the PS2’s most successful online game ever “has returned” in that commercial???.. Or that it was bigger than HALO AND ALL of the original xbox’s online games COMBINED…..

  • …or that it is a UNIQUE game where it’s not about respawn but 1 life per round gameplay which makes the game about TEAMWORK and TACTICS unlike COD and all these easy and REPETITIVE respawn games…
Where is Socom now? What has SONY done with SOCOM? They fired zipper and put away their biggest online game……….. LOOK at the PS “SHARE” website… LOOK at the most requested games on there…… oh hey LOOK… it’s SOCOM I and SOCOM II in HD…. LOOK at all the HD remakes out there that HAVE been released… why doesn’t SOCOM (the most requested HD remake) get the RESPECT and ATTENTION from SONY that it deserves? Why doesn’t SONY LISTEN to it’s fans that actually have good points? Make an online game with servers / lobbies, not just matchmaking. Make socom how it used to be. Advertise it as the UNIQUE GAME IT IS. You’ll sell millions again……

How about Syphon Filter? If we don’t hear about Syphon Filter at this PS4 event or this year.. again it’s another mistake by SONY. EASY money. GREAT IP not being put to use on your powerhouse home console. Bring back how socom and syphon filter used to be.. and start marketing GREAT GAMES… and you’ll be “evolving” in ALL the right ways SONY.

  • Parents bought me a Playstation for Christmas back in 96, fell in love with games like Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid and I never looked back. I’ve owned every single Sony console to release since then (my very first paycheck when I was 16 was spent on a PS2 and Final Fantasy X).

I own all 3 current gen consoles but my greatest gaming moments over the past SEVENTEEN YEARS has always been with Sony. This video was a great nostalgia trip for me (I even remember the original slogan and Crash Bandicoot commercials). Looking forward to more videos leading up to Feb 20th.

  • Why did you have to mention Crash Bandicoot? We all miss him and you SONY are not planning to buy the rights from Activsion..
    :(

  • Nice touch, Sony ;)

I was there for this launch – 15 years old. Picked up Ridge Racer. I didn’t understand the concept of the memory card so I played from the beginning over and over again and bought one two weeks later. Good times.

I’ll be there Wednesday … WITH BELLS ON!
    WOOOO!

  • I laugh at people who doubted it would be PS4 related. Do you still doubt it?

  • @60 JROD0823

    Finally, someone else who understands.

We WANT the PS4 to use more standardized architecture, so it’s easier for companies to port multiplatform games to it. Adding a Cell for backwards compatability would add a lot of cost. I can afford it, but I’d rather have the PS4 be cheaper so more people buy it. I don’t want the PS4 to be like the Vita, a vastly superior machine compared to it’s competitors, but nobody owns one.

  • Can’t wait to see what’s happening next. I had the ps1 with tons of games, then the ps2 with even more games, than I had the x360 and PS3, and have respectively 2 xbox 360 games and 75 ps3 games, lol. I can’t wait to see what’s new on the ps4. I’m only hoping for not too many gimmicks (I prefer controllers over strange things). I’d love to see a demo of a game, played in real time (not like the fake “real time” ps3 ads like killzone).

I wonder if Final Fantasy versus 13 will pop directly on the PS4. It’s been in developpement for ever, and now the next gen is happening. Would be really nice. If FFvs13 pops on the PS4, I’ll buy the console for the game! ^_^

  • The one defining thing I notice in the video is all the old PS1 game commercials. Crash Bandicoot, Twisted Metal, Madden, etc. I truly believe that’s why the system was a huge success is because of the commercials & marketing. I also truly believe that is where you (Sony) have dropped the ball this generation for the PS3. Where are all the commercials and marketing? I know you have had some commercials like the ones with Kevin Butler and all. Plus, there were some weird ones out there as well(Crying baby).Stop it.

I know that at this day and age times are different and there are a lot of different ways people can get the info they desire through social media and even this blog. But, not everyone comes to this blog and not everyone follows you on Facebook, Youtube or Twitter, etc. Even though, there are people lately who doesn’t watch TV like they did during the days of PS1. But, having more/better commercials & better marketing will get more people on board. Just watching this video brought back the memories & made me want to boot up Crash Bandicoot. Now, find a way to get more people feeling they way I do and dive into your endless entertainment of games!!!!!!!!.

    Thank you.

  • @83 Elvick_ on

I don’t think it is the PS4 announcement. I really think Sony has something better but their sleeves. I think they will shock the world and announce Wonderbook 2!

    ;)

  • I feel so old I remember going to funcoland and begging my mom for crash bandicoot how time flies.

  • yes im hyped as well
i have been a playstation fan with my brothers & sisters
since the first & i am forever loyal this video inspire me once again

  • I for one am excited for something new. Sony has always had its quirks or flaws but has always in the end made a very awesome and more then up to date consoles. I have been upset about things but the good has always favored over the bad.

I think they should make it like buying a car, make it your way. Pick the color, hard drive, processor or processors, different shapes, types of capabilities (such as b/s like alot of you are worried about), it could be like buying a cheap kia with no options or a fully decked out bmw. The internet capabilities could be varied also, maybe even different types/shapes/designs of controllers. To build your own super game machine right off the bat, or to buy a cheap affordable console and slowly up grade it as your income allows it. To be able to upgrade it anything.

  • who is with me!!!

  • I love you Playstation. I love you :)

  • You guys have no idea how much I miss Crash Bandicoot. No one talks about him anymore, not even Naughty Dog. :(

  • Powerful Hardware alone won’t cut it unless it has software to back it up, very best software needed to make it shine. Backwards compatible for PSone, PS2, and PS3 is plus or just keep making the PS2 and PS3 units and support it for life if Backwards compatible games don’t work on next gen console at all. ;)

  • i meant backwards compatible not b/s. Sorry ladies and gentleman. didn’t mean to offend if i did.

my old post is 90. Thanks

  • Ken Kutaragi in 2003:
“PSone runs on the PlayStation 2 (…) PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software and the format will continue forever”

    Phil Harrison in 2006:
“Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer, (…) PlayStation is a format, meaning that it transcends many devices – PSOne, PS2, and now PS3.”

So, wheres BC? Will I need to repurchase all my PS3 games to play on PS4?

  • i’m guessing a big surprise with the return of Crash… :)
