PlayStation Evolution: The Beginning

PlayStation’s arrival to the world of gaming signaled a change in the status quo and a sign of things to come. The original PlayStation system emerged in 1994 in Japan as a dark horse challenger, a seemingly outgunned newcomer entering a crowded field dominated by legends of the 16-bit era. PlayStation’s advanced technology and innovative controller design won raves with critics and gamers, and in 1995, the system expanded to North America, Europe, and Australia. Accompanied by a powerful salvo of titles including WipEout, Crash Bandicoot, and Gran Turismo, PlayStation’s rapid rise marked the end of one era of videogames and the dawn of another. The world was never the same.

Be sure to visit our YouTube page in the coming days as we present the evolution of PlayStation and recap our greatest moments. Then, be the first to know on February 20th, 2013 at 6:00pm Eastern Time.

  • With all the positivity and hype surrounding this announcement, there’s no better time than now to stop screwing around and do all they can to return to their former glory with the PS4 and Vita. The arrogant Sony from 2005 seems to be dead and gone, as they now see they can’t take their current/former consumers for granted. They’ve already pleased developers with the PS4/Vita dev kits, now they need to get back to advertising the way this video demonstrated. Their first-party devs have done an excellent job, but Sony also needs to learn to open that checkbook to gain true exclusivity for some of the bigger third party titles. Gotta spend money to make money.

With all that said, I wonder if anything from Square Enix will be shown…

  • Please add the functionality to upgrade secondary accounts to master accounts :)

  • So exciting!

  • This is TORTURE(the waiting) :D

  • Long live Playstation.

  • Psvita/ps4 better compatibility please!!! ability to use the vita as ps4 controller on ALL ps4 games, ability to play ps4 all ps4 games through remote play, ability to play all ps3 games through Gaikai on the ps4 and psvita, new psvita game announcements, big AAA games no more little games( New Motorstorm, God of War, inFAMOUS, New Resistance) and at least show 5-7 first party exclusive ps4 games (bring back Eight Days, The Getaway 3) Guerrilla Games New IP or Killzone 4, Media Molecule New IP or Little Big Planet Universe, Evolution Studios New IP or Motorstorm, Sucker Punch New IP or inFAMOUS, Heavenly Sword 2 and please end up the show with The Last Guardian running on ps4 hardware and announcing the game as ps4 Launch title, thanks.

  • Synergy FTW! Desh Besara PlayStation!!

  • I am so pumped! The second the next PlayStation is out, I’m buying one.

    Predictions:
-Next PlayStation will be called PlayStation Omni.
    -Slogan will be “Play 4ever!”
    -Launch title: Gran Turismo 6
-Gaikai will fix all backwards compatibility issues and will play PS, PS2, and PS3 games.
-Gaikai might allow PC games to be played on PS Omni.
-Solid State Drives are now utilized.
-Price will be between $399.99 and $449.99, although I’m willing to spend up to $549.99.
-PSN IDs and trophies are stored on controller as well as console.
-New IPs from: Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Evolution Studios, Media Molecule and Santa Monica Studios.

I will never be able to find out the answer to why Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s diamond logo is orange. Maybe they will switch to an orange color scheme, but with Gaikai being part of Sony now, I doubt that.

Dude, stop being so self-righteous. Not everyone buys used games, nor do they care. Some people like the feeling of having a product in a brand-new state. Used games have many drawbacks: scratched discs, incomplete box (no boxart, no manual), the “discounted” price isn’t far from the full price, etc.

  • 1. Nobody cares about 3rd-party exclusives anymore. It’s the 1st-party exclusives that make each console unique. The games from Sony (Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, God of War), Nintendo (Mario, Smash Bros., Pokemon, Zelda), and even Microsoft (Halo, Forza) are the reasons to own each console.

    2. Sony needs to remember that PlayStation only got to where it is today because of MARKETING and ADVERTISING. The lack of which is the main reason why the Vita is failing so horribly. The Vita’s price is good at $250, but those damn memory cards need to be cheaper. And where’s the internal storage?

    3. The “leaked” pictures of the new PS4 controller look great! I love the improved ergonomics (curved sides and bigger grips) and the Vita-style D-pad. Plus the included touchpad is definitely unique.

    PS4 incoming! Wooooo!!!

  • Was there in 1994 for the 1st one and will be here on the 20th for the 4th one!

    Hype level critical

  • wow…this makes it almost official :). I was thinking what would happen if Sony just announced something else other than the PS4 after all this hype. Looks like its not gonna happen!!

  • IMO, Sony should realize that not being able to play used games means that the price of new games
will deteriorate rapidly and therefor hurt game sales as a whole.
As, a wise man I would just continue to play my massive backlog and keep ps+ so that I didn’t have to
foolishly run out and get a $60 game I might not even be able to resell.
Also, this would really hurt sports games, as nobody in their right mind would wanna purchase the
same game each year with minor upgrades when they can’t even get rid of the last one.

Lastly, make the Vita usable as a PS4 controller and bring Xperia Z to AT&T ^_^

    4 Cheers for SONY!

  • Stop trying to evolve everything every time you introduce something new (Vita?) these days it tends to flop.

Instead, if this has anything to do with the PS4, just keep doing what you’ve been doing for the PS3.

Just make sure it’s ps3 (at least) backwards compatable, has more than 2 usb slots and goes back to the old store format and you’ll be golden.

The last thing sony/gaming/next gen needs are new ideas.

Move/motion controlls/Kinect (various companies) a major flop unless you want to dance in your liviing room to bad music.

3D is a fad that still hasn’t caught on.

Remote play was never delivered on.

Etc… there’s so much you’re still needing to get right this generation, both for Ps3 and Vita, there’s no point in doing anything new with a ps4 beyond upgrading graphics, every other ‘new’ feature in recent years for any game company has been pretty darn bad.

  • Im telling you right now I have huge faith in you guys and I will buy this regardless but, if you guys dont have backwards computability for Playstation 3 titles then you will really anger a lot of people. After all there is a insane line up this year!

  • time for a second video dont you think?

  • They mentioned Crash Bandicoot in the video. PASBR hint hint wink wink. :-)

  • I want to attend the PlayStation Meeting! But I can’t find the address to the place! I live in NYC by the way. Does anyone know?

  • Can’t wait!
    I just hope it’s backwards compatible…

  • This better be leading up to something more epic than just a Gaikai streaming games announcement or something to do with Vita’s first anniversary.

  • sweett!!! know your roots Sony, can’t wait to get my hands on the new console!!!

  • Hey,

Does anyone know if the PS Home stream will be LIVE to the second or seconds behind the “true” Livestream?

  • I personally won’t be buying unless there is BC for PS3 games. I refuse to pay anything to play games I already payed 60 bucks to own. And that includes paying some sort of fee for cloud based streaming of PS3 games. I’m not alone Sony so I sincerely hope you’re paying attention

  • Hype!!!

  • Can’t wait! A new slimmer & smaller PS One! Woot :P!

  • The next PlayStation will be called PlayStation4. most of the other names are just development kit code names and not the actual system name. no inside source this is just what I think.
You may be right I may be crazy but it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for ;-) LOL

  • Making videos like this before the big announcement is genius! Pretty soon everyone!

  • A revolution is coming with PS4. Bring on Assassin’s Creed V.

  • I’m seeing a few people on here talking about why sony made the Vita, the Vita is a flop, the Vita needs to be discontinued. Many of you need to understand that if sony did not make the psp, we would not have any kind of innovation in the handheld market and would be stuck with that other handheld for all of our handheld gaming needs.. We gamers deserve great technology to. Apple strives to make the best cell phones for their customers, samsung pusher what TV’s can do every year and pc gamers get the best specs year after year. so why not us gamers ? we deserve great technology to, and the ps Vita is a beast. That other handheld is selling well but compare machine to machine, the Vita trumps it in all ways. If gamers would support the BETTER handheld, we would be seeing many more developers making games for the Vita. Kudos to sony for creating the PSP and being brave enough to keep pushing technology in their handheld systems. As a hardcore gamer, I think we deserve a powerful piece of tech to match out thirst for gaming on the go and the Vita delivers….Keep on Gaming.

  • I expect them to make the PS4 the ultimate PlayStation console, with the use of Gaikai.
I’m sure for a premium fee, that is how we will be able to play (stream) all PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 classics.

If you think it will be free, think again.
I’m sure it will be a good chunk of change to use this feature.
Or (what I’m hoping) it will be part of the PS+ membership.

  • BRING BACK BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY!

  • Thank you, Sony.

You keep making PlayStations, I’ll keep being a gamer,

  • PlayStation

  • cool so now i ask the question millions of people what answered… will there be a socom 2 HD remake for ps4 or not????

  • I still believe the PS4 shouldn’t come out until at the very least 2014. The Last of Us is proof that the PS3 hasn’t been fully realized yet. Why introduce another expensive piece of hardware when we don’t need it?

I also don’t like Gaikai. I was able to spend quite a bit of time beta testing it and I didn’t like it.
It might be fine for RTS or MMORPG games, but now “twitch” gaming. There is very little lag, but it IS present and therefore not suitable for all PS3 games.

This is obviously only benefiting Sony.
    1. It’s going to save them a ton of bandwidth
    2. They will effectively kill the PS3 used game market
    3. They will be able to sell you the same PS3 games you ALREADY OWN if you wish to play them on the PS4.

  • Fallout 3 For PSN plz

  • honestly, i’m kind of bummed because i’ve only had my PS3 for about three years. there’s no way i can buy another console right now, but i am pretty eager to see what PS4 is like.

i don’t know about you guys, but i hate waiting, so i’m gonna go forget about it until wednesday gets here ;D

  • Oh, the days when Sony actually had a marketing team and advertisements were everywhere. Nowadays you’d be lucky to hear about the Vita anywhere. Or even the PS3. Sony needs to their “marketing department” and I use that loosely as it appears there is a lack of one, together. The Vita is a pretty impressive piece of hardware, especially for a handheld. With the right marketing behind it, it could sell really well. It’s like Sony is just sitting on their hands and not saying anything

  • What new features can a new console possibly have? My PS3 “only does everything”. I’m happy with my console and don’t want to think of an expense for a new system.

  • [YAWN] Everybody knows it’s just gonna be a big let down. Promised features that never develop. System specs that change once you plop money down. Digital only? PASS! I must be one of only a few who is not getting excited, Everything SONY has done in the last 5 years has been way over hyped!!! Just Saying…

  • I think you’re all going to be upset on the 20th. I just don’t see a reason for Sony to release PS4. There is no tech to replace Blu Ray and hence no upgrade on the quality of the machine they can build. I believe this is going to be some amazing mobile service or cloud service but I don’t think PS4. I mean they are just now getting the turn around on PS3 for the last year or so. Launching a new system means profit loss and Sony as a company can’t afford any losses at this time. A new system means HIGH cost to make and HUGE CUTS on retail to get anyone to buy it. Plus they still have a massive library of games on the release charts. I think XBOX is in desperate need of an upgrade, PS3 is rolling down the money train and PS4 is just a dumb idea right now for them as a company. Would I buy the PS4? Sure, in two years when the announced releases run out and the system cost half what it does on it’s release. Please Sony, surprise the world with not taking the nose dive into PS4 and just hold off until you have something to really blow PS3 out of the water.

  • @ WAR0979

Blu Ray discs have nothing to do with the quality of games. They are simply a storage medium. the only things that affects the quality of a game graphically is CPU / GPU processing power and RAM. All of which desperately need an upgrade from the PS3’s current specs. The PS3 is ancient compared to the new tech that is currently available.

Technology does not progress at a steady pace.. it accelerates forward exponentially at a geometric rate. Constantly evolving at leaps and bounds. This pace will only quicken as we progress into the future. The PS3 from a hardware standpoint is obsolete.. this is a FACT and you can not dispute it. If you disagree it will only confirm your ignorance, the FACT will remain what it is.

  • I can’t wait until the PS4 is announced!

Would it be possible to release an add-on to enable backwards compatibility for the PS4? Having backwards compatibility with this method would keep cost lower on the PS4 and give the option for this who want it (like me and many other people).

  • You know what would suck? if sony just said we got new features for the PS3! and everyone gets disappointed then rage out.

I doubt it though. Its most likely the PS4

  • If Feb. 20th IS the day the big PS4 reveal, THIS BETTER BE EPIC…AND I MEAN EPIC… they CANNOT repeat the mistakes of the past.

A $600 PS3 was horrific pricing, but if we wanted it 1st, you had to spend up too $1,100 because back then you had to buy it with the BS games package from Gamestop). Having the original 60GB badboy is a pleasure, because it had the B/C.

Backwards Compatibility is flippin HUGE, that is a absolute MUST HAVE, If this IS the PS4 reveal, since it IS the Next-Gen system, there is ABSOLUTLEY NO F’N WAY it CANNOT HAVE THAT!
What kind of excuse/reason could they possibly give that would make any type of sense not too?

And if it is the PS4 reveal, just think about it for a moment. We haven’t heard SQUAT. From ANYONE. Oh we “hear” comments on what games may be for the PS4, some comments on a forum that companies are working on PS4 games, but we dont know really what they are working on. Let alone WHEN it’s coming.

Most thought that maybe, at this years E3, but most likely E3 2014. BUT FEB 20, 2013? 3 1/2 DAYS FROM NOW?

    WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO

  • Oh goodie, another crappy shooter console.

PlayStation game library – freaking amazing

PlayStation 2 game library – almost on par with PS1

PlayStation 3 game library – freaking sucks. lots of generic crappy lowest common denominator games for dudebrofratjockmeatheadcasualpewpewgamers. PS3 game library seems like video games for people who dislike video games.

Sony, you got rid of turn based JRPGs, so you have also got rid of me as a fan. Sony, I hope both you and the PlayStation brand die off. I am going back to Nintendo. I have always loved Nintendo, and they make better and funner games than you.

Sony, you suck now. Sony, die.

  • i agree ^^^^^^ unless there is a socom HD remake (a game made on ps2) im not buying ps4 at all. il go xbox. because the reason MOST people bought a ps3 was because of socom . only way me or my clan will buy ps4 is if a socom HD remake comes in.

  • You two above me, I think it’s laughable that you think Sony will be hurt if you leave or that any of us care if you go. Last thing we need is a couple of cry babies that make idle threats and talk trash when they don’t get their way.
Save us the pain of having to suffer through your inept comments already and just go… go away. smh

  • I think the controller looks very cool but I hope the reports are wrong about it having Move hardware in it. Ugh, Move, WAYYYYY overpriced and cumbersome compared to Kinect.

Used games – they should have been banned long ago. No trade-ins! Would be awesome not to walk into a store and see racks of used crap that people have done who knows what to. *shudder*

Backwards compatibility – must have. Without it I will be moving to Microsoft hardware or going back to PC gaming where the graphics are better anyway (yes they are, deal with it. Well as long as you have high end hardware and not a crappy $800 computer).

Best rumor has been they based it on true PC architecture. If this has happened then i think the PS4 could be cheaper and more powerful than anything. If they decided to go with some crap configurations like the PS3 and make it ridiculously hard for developers, it will fall flat. Of course there will always be fanbois who will buy something no matter what but like someone said before, look at the games comping out for the PS3 this year. What could they possibly put on the PS4 to make it something you would just HAVE to buy? Launch titles will be mostly PS3 games “re-done” for the PS4 I bet.

    We shall see.
