PlayStation Evolution: The Beginning

PlayStation’s arrival to the world of gaming signaled a change in the status quo and a sign of things to come. The original PlayStation system emerged in 1994 in Japan as a dark horse challenger, a seemingly outgunned newcomer entering a crowded field dominated by legends of the 16-bit era. PlayStation’s advanced technology and innovative controller design won raves with critics and gamers, and in 1995, the system expanded to North America, Europe, and Australia. Accompanied by a powerful salvo of titles including WipEout, Crash Bandicoot, and Gran Turismo, PlayStation’s rapid rise marked the end of one era of videogames and the dawn of another. The world was never the same.

Be sure to visit our YouTube page in the coming days as we present the evolution of PlayStation and recap our greatest moments. Then, be the first to know on February 20th, 2013 at 6:00pm Eastern Time.

  • I would be fine with banning used games if they compensated and dropped prices to 30 bucks.

  • Backwards compatible please? And i’d love to have a few Terabytes of internal storage too. This digital media we are seeing more and more of kinda begs for more memory.

Not much you can do wrong sony. Not much, just try not to do the few things we all fear.

I admit…i won’t be buying this on release…pending a bundle deal from the day one. I bought my ps3 with no bundle….couple months later bundles endless. So i’ll wait for a bundle deal this time, but i’m anxious.

  • There is nothing wrong with having a voice as consumers, but we all sadly know that backwards compatibility is not coming for PS4. I’d be very surprised if they did.

If such was the case, Sony and game publishers will NOT be making much money, which, in turn will be very sad for us gamers. If publishers and studios do not make $, then we will see more game studios shut down in 2013.

I bet my money on partial backwards compatibility, you know, with what we have now, the PS1 and 2 Classics (Digital catalog), and I’d be very satisfied with that.

Now, interestingly, the Gaikai integration raises a lot of questions, and I’m hoping to hear some answers in a few days.

My hope is that exclusive games for Sony (God of War, Uncharted, Twisted Metal, etc from the PS1-3 generations that really, deserve more spotlight by more people) being playable on a PC or other “smart” devices through streaming, with PSN integrated services like friend lists and trophies. This could actually earn money for developers on missed opportunities (people never owned a Playstation), again having that EDGE that Sony has over other console developers – quality content.

By the way, great job with the video. Never knew PS2 was that hot.

  • Playstation4 is coming out !

  • It has to be the Playstation 4!! There showing clues! There showing the history of the System’s! It’s gotta be the Playstaion 4!

  • second video – only in Brazil – coming before – XuP4

  • You guys have a GOLDEN opportunity here..start marketing and promoting DESTINY on ps3/ps4 its gonna be huge and has great fanbase potential on sony platforms (future ones included) its an always on game and psn is FREE!!!!

  • Can’t wait to check it out, is it going to be a conference or something?

  • Maybe SONY and APPLE could join forces to take down the evil Microsoft empire ????? iPad or iPhone connectivity with the PS4??

  • Are you kidding BAMAJohn? Apple is a thousand times more evil then Microsoft is… and that’s saying something!

  • Give me my PS4 D=<

  • This glosses over the whole genesis of the Playstation which was an attempt to create a cd-rom peripheral for the SNES. Sony and Nintendo couldn’t come to an agreement over the revenue split so Nintendo backed out in 1992. A year later Sony started working on the Playstation.

  • Hmm. Lots of hype all over the Internet. What does that lead to these days?

    Disappointment.

If the rumors are true, every game you spend money on will be locked to an account that can disappear or be deleted at will. In other words, nothing belongs to the user.

Policies for PSN are bad enough as they are. If this hype is for PS4, I’m not interested. My support ends here.

  • Sony you’ll have to be slapped if you dare to announce PS4…please don’t do it.PS4 is utterly unnecessary. We don’t need it….I hope you guys are trolling hard on this one.

  • what i want in PS4:

backwands compability with PS1,PS2 and PS3 at least with the downloaded games
dualshock 4 at least with the same design of dualshock 3, or put 1 or 2 more buttons and thats it
more “cross-play” with the PSVITA .
forget that idea about used games, dont make worse things than “online passes” and so on.
keep making the new good games like in this generation

i am a playstation gamer for 15 year and i like to say that the sony always make me proud of it, just keep the good work and let the Playstation 4 come.

  • Feb 20th, my birthday is coming!!

    Oh great, also the PS4!!

  • Wow, they are updating this post. I was waiting a new video since saturday. Just today i decided to take a quick look, WOOOW; Now has PS One(†), PS2(†), And Even the PS3 History. Will this last become to history, Feb 20th? 8years spent up so fast !
And Comes PS4 to make his HISTORY! Long Live*

  • Just remembering:
    I’m so excited.

  • My wallet is ready.
PS4 this holiday season, dont disappoint me please.

On a side note, kinda funny how the added “Portable Gaming” segment did not even so much as acknowledge the PSPGo, I hope Sony has kept in mind how going all digital can totally destroy a system, handheld or otherwise.

Our body might be ready, but bandwidth and storage prices are not. (dropping prices on Vita mem cards is also a good idea)

  • PS2 classics on the Vita please!!

  • Ooooooooooooooooooops,
    Original sequence of playstation:
    PS1
    PS2
    PSP
    PS3
    PSV…

    The sequence of videos:
    Fri. PS1
    Sat. PS2
    Sun. PS3 (Then starts portables)
    Mon. PSP…
    Tue. Probably PSV,
Wed. I Think that wouldn’t be PS4, once just now has started Portables videos and Sony’s CEO has said that The Portable is the focus of the company.
What should we expect? PS Vita 2?

  • I had to have a PSP on day 1, so I paid $700 to import one via overnight shipping from Japan on launch day over there. LOL. I was about 19 or 20 years old so I didn’t have many bills to pay yet so that is how I could afford it. I also bought a 64 MB memory card (yes Megabytes, not Gigabytes) for the PSP for $130 which makes current Vita memory card prices a bargain. LOL! And then add another $100 for 2 PSP launch games (Ridge Racers and Hot Shots Golf).

I wish I had a time machine to go back and punch myself in the face for spending that much money on a PSP. Good times, good times.

  • @ omega_alpha-619

“The PS3 is ancient compared to the new tech”

Ancient, no. Slightly inferior, sure. But that doesn’t mean it’s anything bad…

“Technology does not progress at a steady pace.. it accelerates forward exponentially at a geometric rate.”

No, it progresses at a steady pace. You’re not on the inside track, so you don’t see all the baby steps. It only appears to evolve by giant leaps from the consumers’ point of view. The evolution of technology (innovation) is fueled by discovery and imagination. So, unless our collective intuition is evolving at a faster pace than before… well…

“This pace will only quicken as we progress into the future.”

Speculation. In fact, progress appears to have slowed a little bit, as far as I can tell.

“The PS3 from a hardware standpoint is obsolete.. this is a FACT and you can not dispute it.”

I can dispute it. The PS3 is not obsolete because… we’re still using it. You might wanna look up “obsolete” in the dictionary.

  • @Heatseeker125

“I also bought a 64 MB memory card (yes Megabytes, not Gigabytes) for the PSP for $130 which makes current Vita memory card prices a bargain. LOL!”

This is exactly what I mentioned to people who were complaining about the prices of Vita memory cards. I spent damn near $100 on a 1 (one) GB Memory Stick for my PSP back in 2006. The Vita memory cards are a steal by comparison. How quickly they forget, or maybe they’re all just noobs…

  • MAJOR PROBLEM MY FELLOW PS BROTHERS AND SISTERS!

Like all of you I have also posted etc., that the PS4, MUST HAVE Backwards Compatibility for all PS1 and PS2 & PS3 Games. Over Time, Sony has added tons of ’em are on the PSN for D. Load. While that’s “NICE it’s on the PSN, it’s BS since people OWN the game disc.

EVERY SINGLE GAMER WHO BOUGHT PS1 & PS2 GAMES, WERE DEVASTATED & Royaly P’O’d when the PS3 came out& the ONLY model to have the B/C to PLAY those games was the orig. 60gb. I got it as many others did & we ALL paid a FORTUNE FOR IT. Some over $1000 just to buy that specific model so we COULD play our older games..

I posted in here that there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO REASON for the PS4 to NOT have Backwards compatibity of PS1, PS2 and PS3 Games. All i keep reading about is “We must have B/C, from the “CLOUD” OR SOMETHING”.

BUT IT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH! ITS TOO VAGUE!

We ALL want B/C so much, that NO ONE is DEMANDING THAT SONY MAKE DARN SURE that EVERY SINGLE PS1 & PS2 GAME DISC THAT WAS SOLD TO US & BOUGHT, MUST BE ABLE TO BE PUT IN THE PS4 and PLAY W/O ANY PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER.

  • PS3 was NEXT Gen, and the ONLY PS3 that could play MOST of those games were the 60GB, but you had to pay EXTRA for it. So we did. Sony said the “cost” of the EMULATER, was too high, well over time costs HAVE come down, and yet, still NO B/C!

Because SONY saw a way to earn EXTRA INCOME by NOT allowing their already created/produced games, to play on the PS3. WE CANNOT ALLOW THAT TOO HAPPEN AGAIN.

SINCE THOUSANDS OF GAMERS ALREADY OWN the PS1 or PS2 game disc,, the PS 4, MUST BE ABLE TO DO EITHER 1 OF 2 THINGS in regards to B/C:

The user inserts the physical game disc into the PS4, it reads the DISC, and EITHER 1 of 2 things happen:

    a) UNLOCKS THE GAME IN THE PS STORE, SO WE CAN DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE, PLUS ALL IT’S EXTRA DLC thats on the DISC
    OR
    b) Sony gives us the option of “LOADING THE GAME ONTO “OUR” PSN CLOUD SERVICE”
    .. And then, game on!

IF WE BOUGHT, Either/and/or PS1/PS2 GAMES & HAVE THE ACTUAL GAME DISC, THERE IS NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM ANYONE SHOULD BE “LOCKED” OUT OF THAT GAME ON THE “FUTURE PS4”, JUST TO PAY SONY EVEN MORE MONEY FOR THE SAME GAME ON THE PSN THEY ALREADY SOLD US!

PLEASE DEMAND THAT ALL PREVIOUS PS1 & PS2 PHYSICAL GAMES DISCS MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY IN THE PS4!!

  • @Haskell420

Or you could have just spent a measly $99 on a brand new slim PS2 to play your PS2 games… like I did a few years ago. Got my $99 PS2 slim hooked up to the CRT in the bedroom, and my PS3 hooked up to the HDTV in the living room. Works out nicely. Games always work best on the original hardware anyway… Why would you want emulated BC? Because that’s what you’d have to have with the PS4. It’s highly unlikely that Sony will drop the Cell into the PS4. Just keep your PS3.

I see a few people saying they’d spend $1,000 for BC in the PS4… heh… why not just keep your PS3, and try to find a cheap PS2 slim somewhere? Then you’ll have access to all 4 generations of PlayStation, and you won’t have to spend a grand. Seems like a better idea, right? No? Logic sucks? Darn.

  • PS4 will be called “PLAYSTATION EVOLUTION”.

  • Soooooo PUMPED for Wednesday!!!

    @PrimeroIncognito

It’s nice to see someone else with some common sense.

  • @ gold1617

Unfortunately, sensibility isn’t common anymore. That’s the main reason the trolls hate me so much. :)

I appreciate the compliment though. Thank you sir or ma’am.

I’m also excited to see what Sony will reveal this Wednesday.

  • I really cant believe this is happening…so soon……..as long as 3D is ok for the foreseeable future, im good…

  • I am PS4

  • Reverse remote play. I want to play my vita games on a big screen.

  • I think that Sony should release an add-on to enable backwards compatibility on the PS4. The PS3 is just not built to last. I am not getting rid of my PS3 but how long will it last? Plus, it’s better to have 1 console to play all of your PlayStation games.

Enabling backwards compatibility through an add-on would make backwards compatibility possible on the PS4 without raising the cost of the PS4.

  • In the PSP/Vita video, it says that Sly Cooper is a cross-play game when it’s NOT. It’s a single-player game and clearly somebody got ‘cross-buy’ confused with ‘cross-play’. Do you need someone to proofread scripts?

  • @ PrimeroIncognito (a.k.a. PSBLOG Resident Troll)

All you did with your comment is confirm your ignorance. You might want to Google “Moore’s law” and educate yourself.
I’m not your teacher so it’s not my responsibility to educate you, nor do I feed notorious troll’s such as yourself.

  • i loved watching that old footage from the glory days. Thanks for Playstation and I wish continued success with the Playstation 4.

I agree please bring back the backward compatibility with both ps4 and with the psvita. I would still love the ability to obtain a digital copy or be able to play my UMDs on the vita without to rebuy the games.

    I have over 60 ps1 games, 100 ps2 games and a 175 ps3 games and counting….Backward compatibility is very important to me.

    Thanks for your consideration.

  • Hmmm. I wonder. I was having a talk w/ a buddy of mine about the PS4, and if this could really be the DEBUT of it or MOST LIKELY the Reveal of it, when it’s coming etc. Could SONY finally have an actual HOLY S#IT MOMENT?

As we went on and back and forth on what the PS4 will have, need, games etc..Then he said something that stopped my words cold. I sat here for a few good seconds, kinda in la la land. He says, “I know you’re still their, I hear Monday night Raw & College B-ball in the background(I have 2 HDTVs in my bedroom).
    Take your time, ha ha.”

So a few seconds pass by, kinda shake my head out of the la la land. Now I heard & understood what he said. But my initial reaction to hearing what he said, really hit me.

    What if it’s NOT?

Until that exact moment of the SONY Reveal, everyone is guessing, trying to read between lines of a Tweet or a post. But until that speific moment 6pm Wed. when Jack Tretton walks out, or Kaz does,, EVERYTHING IS SPECULATION! And I love it too!

Hey, does ANYONE else THINK, its NOT going to be the PS4?
Maybe a Playstation Phone? VITA for phone calls? Nah thats not big enough, or something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT

Maybe the 1st ever PS HDTV LOL

  • Need the EDIT option again lol…The last line was supposed to read, “Maybe the 1st ever PS HDTV LOL or better yet, a PS3 w/ DVR Capabilitiies n SKYPE

  • And btw I NEVER said the PS3 was Obsolete.. I said it’s hardware is e.g. GPU and RAM
Just because they are announcing PS4 doesn’t mean the PS3 is going to just POOF! go away just like that. It still has a great many games left in it.. but anyone that knows anything about what Processing Power is capable of doing right now knows that it is time to start looking at an upgrade.
PS4’s won’t be replacing PS3’s for most people for a couple of years… lots of people will buy PS4 at launch but even more people won’t. Look at PS2 people still buy them and they kept making games for it for many years after PS3 was released.

  • Here is what I want for the PS4 (if my input means anything lol)

    -Better reliability (no more YLOD)

-backwards compatibility through an add-on for PS2 and PS3 games on the PS4.

-give us the option to change our usernames.

    – give us the option to go invisible on PSN.

-More platformers ( Jak, Ratchet and Sly and some new platformers)

  • I might just die of anticipation lol this is killing me!! SO AMPED!!!! And the PS4 is an AMAZING opportunity to get the Vita selling!! Make the two devices much more compatible than the PS3 and Vita are. Also, streaming games to the Vita as WELL as the PS4 would be GENIUS!! I honestly don’t know what I would even do with myself if that happened haha I’d be in heaven ;p

  • The PSP was the first portable system to bring console quality games on the go?

You guys ever play Super Mario 64 DS?

  • With them having the PSP and Vita both in the latest video, I wonder what their video for tomorrow will be… I’m loving going back and remembering all the time I’ve spent playing the PlayStation and all of its evolutions.

  • Please no more motion-control, camera, and touch-screen gimmicks! All we want is solid hardware and quality titles! You give me that, and I give you money.

  • Please don’t charge for onlline gaming with the PS4.

I am more than willing to pay for the PlayStation Plus moving forward, but with my large family, there is no way for us to afford an account for each member. If Sony pulls a xBox Live, we’ll end up having to share one account for all of us. Currently, we enjoy having separate accounts and the ability to play against each other freely.

If there was only one account, we would not purchase as many multiple copies of games, both PSN and disc. This provides the option for us to make use of our multiple PS3 systems also. I admit the savings was quickly spent on additional PSPs and Vita systems. If each of us required an account for online play, then these systems would not have been purchased.

  • I hope the rumor about the new Vita that has HDMI cable support is true.

If I can play Vita/PSP games on HDTV, I’ll be more than happy.

  • @ Cheatscape: “The PSP was the first portable system to bring console quality games on the go?
You guys ever play Super Mario 64 DS?”

You only quoted part of the video… it was the first portable system to bring console quality gaming on the go “with a large, high resolution screen”. The DS screens had incredibly sh***y 4×3 resolution.

I’m excited for Wednesday. I actually scheduled a vacation day just so I can watch the conference live, rather than reading about it after work. Even if it ends up not being the PS4, I’ll still be able to relax for the day, so it’s a win/win for me.
