Hi Everyone! It’s a special day at PlayStation, and I hope all of you had a chance to watch the livestream of PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York, where we just unveiled PlayStation 4. One of the most exciting components of our next-generation platform is DUALSHOCK 4, the new wireless controller that combines with PlayStation 4 to deliver new gameplay experiences that have never been possible before.
I’d like to give you a tour of DUALSHOCK 4 and the features that will provide game developers the freedom to create brand new experiences that previously were limited to their imaginations.
Design
DUALSHOCK 4 adopts the familiar form factor of the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with some key enhancements:
- Motion control is enabled by a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor
- Dual analog sticks fine-tuned for better precision plus improved surface materials and shape for more delicate manipulation
- L2/R2 buttons on the top of the controller employ a curved design for easier, smoother interaction
- A new “Options” button combines the functions of the DUALSHOCK 3’s “Select” and “Start” buttons for operating in-game menus
New Ways to Play, Share and Connect
In addition to these features that build on the controls that you already know, DUALSHOCK 4 offers new features that enable new ways to play, a key part of the PS4 experience. One of the biggest innovations we’ve designed centers on the deep social interactions that will surround all games on PS4.
The “Share” button allows you to easily broadcast your gameplay in real-time through streaming sites such as Ustream, where fellow gamers can comment and even join your game in new ways. For example, if you’re stuck in a difficult level, your friends can offer health potions or special weapons that you can use during gameplay. You can also instantly upload images or video to Facebook by pressing the “Share” button. As both a developer and a gamer, I’m personally excited about the opportunity to get help from friends when facing a challenge, and I can’t wait to see what my friends are playing in real time along with videos of their favorite in-game moments.
On the front side of DUALSHOCK 4 is a light bar with LED that illuminate in various colors to match the color of the character in a game as a simple way to identify players. The colors can also provide useful information to players, such as when their character has taken damage during a game. DUALSHOCK 4 was developed alongside a second peripheral, a dual camera which can sense the depth of the environment in front of it and also track the 3D location of the controller via its light bar. The new camera incorporates four microphones capable of accurate sound detection and source origination, and it will support the PlayStation Move motion controller with more precision than ever before.
DUALSHOCK 4 also has a touchpad at the front of the controller as a new input method, offering more ways to interact with games. Additionally there’s a built-in speaker and headset jack to deliver high-fidelity sound effects from the games. A headset will be bundled with PS4, enabling gamers to chat with friends during online gaming and to hear sound effects from the controller.
There’s a lot built into DUALSHOCK 4, and the features were all thoughtfully designed with input from the development community (both our internal studios and third parties) and PlayStation gamers. Our goal was to give game creators an open canvas to express their ideas, and DUALSHOCK 4 combined with DUALSHOCK 4 will help us achieve the future of gaming that we at PlayStation see ahead of us.

Does the headphone jack ONLY let you hear the chat and sounds from the controller? Or the audio from the game?
Pleaseeeeeee make this controller a wireless receiver for audio. You’ll be able to turn ANY headset into a wireless headset! :D That’s what I think of when it comes to future gen.
it looks great, but you know what would be a great addition a little button on the ps4 that sends a signal out to the controller so when you dont know where it is or you forgot where you placed it (trust me it happens!) ithe controller starts beeping and you know where to find it i would love to have this!
The control is excellent but the touchpad could be better looking. Why Sony did not think of it the size it was qwerty keyboard panel? It would have been excellent! I used to manage with that weight control and dimension. If I took the qwerty keyboard I feel very light … Hehehe. Or better yet, not have been better LCD touch screen type psp vita? It would have been excellent and with better functionality! There is no way to suggest that Sony?
the unveil of the PS4 would have been better if it included some pictures of the actual console and not just the Controller. dont get confused im glad that they showed the controller but im a little mad that the didnt include the actual console in their meeting. hopefully we’ll get pictures of the console in the coming weeks
Will PS3 still get games after the PS4 comes out?
Because if not I think many people will rage hard

Great lookin controller the console has to be good lookin to how are u gn hav a controller that doesn’t match the system so that should be all good dont doubt the system design Sony got that i jus wish abetter hardware patch will come out wit it with nex gen graphics

429 model & 529 model 429 doesnt have the move black bar 529 has everythg 1, controller ,ps4 , nd the Bar so i guess the bar is very sophisticated cause they want 100 bones more 4 it the 529 model should come with 2 controllers thats a, (recommendation )
Sony gon eat this fall we gon be gettin the latest games on ps3 a month or two B4 the ps4 comes out then gotta turn around and buy the ps4 and all the latest games CHa CHing is all they hearing they coulda released it earlier but the want all the cash they can get by havin us buy double games with slightly upgraded graphics

No it wont whole new component evrythg should be a lil faster so the technology of the product has to comply with the new system.

You should also be able to switch the colour on the LED light on the controller to whatever you feel as a way to personalize the controller. There should also be a option where you can make the controllers lights rotate slowly.

This is so awesome to hear news about the PS4 and to actually see the new controller. I can’t wait for it and I’m definitely getting it the first day for sure. Everything looks so good and this is really the next gen controller and content we’ve been waiting for.

Nice design, and no display/screen on controller is a must since it would have raise the cost of controllers.
What I don’t get is the LED color to IDENTIFY players and changing if you get hurt and all but…the LED is in FRONT, we’ll not really see it, right? Ir would have been nice and a cool-looking futurisic touch if the LED color was also going through the PS BUTTON. : )
Nice features, except for the Share button, cool to take secreenshots but sending things to Facebook…I don’t get this trend of everything going through FB…would be fun when the “FB is cool” thing passes and every products out there have links to it… : /

That “Light Bar” seems like a complete waste of battery life and resources. They say it will change colors to indicate different things such as when you’re taking fire and whatnot. So the developers expect me to flip my controller around in the middle of a game to see when color my light is? Could they have placed that light in a more horrible place? What were they thinking?
@exopolitics1971: The light bar needs to be in the front so (for games that use motion control) the camera can see it – just like the PS3 camera needs to see the ‘ball’ on the Move wand.
I agree that the placement also makes it difficult to use the color of the light bar to indicate different events in a game (health, taking a hit, etc) Maybe the touch pad is supposed to pick up some of the light from underneath and ‘glow’ a bit? That would make the most sense from a design perspective.
This looks pretty good but I’m wondering about accounts will they transfer over because I want to play his controller so much now, I wonder how the touch screen will work out.
When is the Playstation4 goin to be available? Or is it out already???
I am curious, will you guys release downloadable software to make it backwards compatible? you really should if at all possible, i do still have some games i like on my ps3, but worst comes to worst i will just trade them in towards ps4, also you should make a bundle with console, two controllers diablo 3, watch dogs, and a headset, i know i would pay quite a bit of money for that bundle! people please show your support if you agreeon my two points reply to my comment to attract sonys atention to these points!!!

it would better a microphone instead of speaker. we can also hear sounds on tv, so speaker is unnecessary. but a mirophone would make us more social.
