PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • I glad I switch from the Stupid World of Xbox to the Wonderful World of PlayStation. The Xbox sucks so hard that I sold it to GameStop.

    Anyhow, SOCIAL GAMING????!

I AM A SOLO PLAYER!!!!!! I WANT MY SINGLE PLAYER GAMES!!! SCREW YOU, I DO NOT PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS. I HATE COMPETITION, I HATE MULTIPLAYER, I HATE MODERN VIDEO GAMES, I HATE YOUR STUPID TRENDS!

NEW GAMES SUCK, NEW GAMES ARE NOT FUN, AND OLDER GAMES ARE FAR BETTER THAN YOUR MODERN SUCKY GAMES.

  • i cant wait! i will trade my newborn daughter for a ps4!! not really but you know what i mean now by not being able to wait.

  • @95
I dont think the primary purpose of the new eye is for video chat.
The new eye is stereoscopic, making 3D tracking of the move that much more accurate. Should be interesting to see the difference of the move’s accuracy between generations.

  • Can’t wait for the PS4 i already got $1000 spent on my head nad it hasnt come out yet :) and KILLZONE n Watch Dogs ooh boyy!!!

  • A true Socom at launch please!
    Only way i’ll buy.

  • Will I be able to play my ps3 games on the ps4. I ask this mainly because my ps3 recently broke, and if i can I would rather wait till the ps4 came out to save money.

  • I’ll buy it 2morrow if it has B.C. and No “NO-Used Game” BS.

But right now from what i’ve seen my hype level is probably at 1.

I swear if you guys dont’ give this thing B.C. fully (for PS3 AT LEAST I’d love ps1 and 2 but that stuf is mad old so I understand) you are NOT getting my moneyl.

  • I was VERY impressed with the ps4 reveal and conference, I must say I want one at launch and I have never gotten a console at launch. I was blown away by the games, especially Killzone. MS is surely sweating bullets right now, the ps4 is really looking to kick some massive a**. I love how it caters to the developers and gamers alike. Here’s to sony coming back on top like the ps2 days!

  • Sony is only my second favorite game company, they will never replace Nintendo as far as I’m concerned, but what I’m seeing from playstation 4, I’m pretty happy with what I’m seeing. The controller, the connectivity with phone/tablet thing, the sharing and streaming with friends, and taking your games on the go with ps vita are all pretty nice ideas. I have never had a reason to want a smartphone or tablet, but this news almost makes me want to go out and buy an ipad just to imagine being able to watch the game play in bed from a big screen.. I just might too. As well as the PS vita, wasn’t really planning on buying one of those anytime soon, but if I could bring great PS games on the go with me whenever, that would make the PS vita’s functionality so much better.

  • The only problem I have with this news are the game titles, I’m not a big fan of the genre’s Sony and Microsoft tend to cater too, but I understand that these games all have big fan bases and are pretty good for early releases, the Witness being a puzzle game sounds nice to me, but I’m hoping to see some RPG’s or action adventure, I can’t wait to see god of war on your console. The streaming thing sounds really cool, and I hope it will give players an easier way to share their games with youtube and the broader online community.

  • Please, please don’t botch up these promises, I remember promises in the past about the psp connectivity with the PS3, and that didn’t really pan out very well, the more options and variety you give us as players to play our games the better, you should also look into allowing us to play your PSvita games on our PS4’s on our TV’s, that would be fantastic. Thanks for the exciting news!

  • @neuropunk

Like I told you before, get a job as a game designer and show them how it’s done if you’re so passionate about it. C’mon dude… all that whining isn’t going to change a thing.

I don’t like shooters either, not even a little bit, and I agree with you that they’re all (mostly) the same and became stale as a genre a long time ago, but you must understand that it’s not all about you (or me) and there are many folks out there who like those sorts of games. Obviously, Sony will continue to cater to that group because they are many, but they never have neglected those of us who are interested in more compelling/satisfying genres. Sony has always provided numerous options for fans of all kinds of unique experiences. Sony is KNOWN for that. Personally, I haven’t had much trouble finding games that I like on PlayStation consoles.

  • Waited a year or two to buy PlayStation 3. I will be pre-ordering PlayStation 4. I cannot wait.

  • Is it just me or did anyone else actually see what the system looks like? i’ve yet to see it!

  • so many great games coming out i cant wait im gunna start saving money…

  • I like how people that are unhappy about the PS4 come in here talking with CAPS LOCK on (as if we can’t read) and start insulting people who like the PS4 and Sony themselves.

Pretty dumb guys. Good riddance, glad you guys are getting an xbox or something else, congrats on not getting a PS4. Woo!

  • I cant wait for The new Infamous & watch dogs .. !!! & Hoping we get another Assassins Creed !!!!!

  • Very exited for PS4 can’t wait for preorder release date take my money already.

  • SPYstation4 is not for me

  • Thank you Jack!!!! I love you Playstation!!!! If this releases at around 400 dollars, I’ll be buying it on DAY ONE I PROMISE YOU!!!!

  • I’m happy Sony seems committed to bringing the magic back to all consoles. The feeling of picking up the controller and having many great gaming experiences with friends and family. Taking away the hassle of waiting for things to download or buffer so that everyone can always enjoy all the content on the PS4. Not to mention adding functionality from the PS4 to our favorite social media sites and being able to share our experiences with the touch of a button with the PS dual shock share button. Invigorating the creative minds of the best game developers in the industry and making the PS4 a better platform for indie developers then ever before on console. Furthermore, adding shared functionality between PS4 and the PS vita via Gaikai’s cloud game streaming technology will allow a better streamlined experience for players and developers.

  • Lastly, the ability to buy a game and as it downloads, a piece of the beginning is playable a i wait for the other to finish or be able to to pause a game in a suspended state and return back to where i was to finish playing without restarting the whole system is what will allow Sony to bring the magic back to consoles. when the controller in your hand disappears and it is a connection between you and the game. When the system user interface is not standard for everyone but personalized and shaped by you; and the PSN is not the center for media, games, and and videos but the center of the player, with media tailored for the player, shared by the player, and connecting us to everything. This is the PlayStation4 creative, immersive, and always-connected to you; making it a clear delight to never stop playing.

  • How glad I am that the PS4 would finally announced. As for me and my partner the http://ps4freaks.de community has really pleased where it hiss coming PS4 is. We all cried and did not want to stop xD

  • I’m so on board with this especially if they can pull off the streaming all the ps1-ps4 games. There is so much in the PS2 gen I never got to play so that would be a HUGE incentive for me to buy.

  • @110: Stop acting like JRPG and turn based JRPGs are niche genres, because they’re not. There are more than just a mere few turn based JRPG fans. Also, I am not talking about just me, or even you, but all of us, that these traitorous video game companies have ignored and neglected. There are millions and millions of us. Final Fantasy VII single handedly put the PlayStation on the map in the first place. (and no, FFXIII series and FFXIV are horrible and don’t count as FF games). They say that turn based games don’t turn profit, but that’s because they put them on the Xbox 360 at the beginning of the gen, the Xbox 360 is where games other than shooters go to die. And that is a major reason why turn based JRPGs are simply not being made.

Oh, after I become a video game developer and make my own AAA JRPGs, you want me to run for president too? Oh and don’t count those indie JRPG or kickstarter junk. Those are low budget and bad quality. Just put some mechs and FF7-10/Xenogears combat, materia, leveling, WORLD MAPS, INTERACTIVE TOWNZ, EXPLORATION back in JRPGs! they are a very vital part of JRPGs, and FFXIII series is junk because it lacks those vital elements.

  • @114: Why would anyone ever buy an Xbox? They have no games, just Failo and Bears of Bore. They have even more shooters than PlayStation does, if you believe that is possible!

    NINTENDO >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SONY PEWPEWSTATION 4

  • Wow!! Wow!! I am always ready for a new PS. Can’t wait to be in stores… Hurry up!!!… Just hope all the games from PS3 can be played on PS4.

  • I WANT!! cant wait…the controller looks REALLY cool…i want to see how the console will look like!!

  • ok we gonna get ps4 sooner then i thought
    will ps4 plays ps3 games??

  • Sony, please put PS3 backwards compatibility. *crosses fingers* Or else, I will stop collecting game discs and sell them right after I finish it. More power Sony! PS4 for the win!

  • I think the only thing that would be close to a deal breaker for me on this one is if I have to re-buy all the PSN games I’ve purchased, that would be horrible.

  • i think for every game system u should wait ,about 1 year after it first releases

  • finally light at the end of the tunnel , I can’t wait to see the launch of this, simply we will crush any other console. Sony been my favorite since ps1 launch and I knew it,Sony wont let us down ( fans). un uyyyypyyyy boricua from PR.

  • Now although I’m really excited about all the new features and games coming out for Playstation 4, but one thing that wasn’t mentioned in the briefing was a party chat system.

This really concerns me because I play both Xbox360 and PS3 and the one reason I keep going back to my xbox is because I can play one game and chat to a friend playing something else.

In a console as powerful as the PS4 I’m guessing a simple 2-8 person party chat system wouldn’t be too much trouble to implicate.

If this isn’t implicated on the PS4 it will be a real shame. :(

  • @27 – swisstylez – You know what is funny and ironic by your statement is that by making the console more PC friendly, Sony is just inviting those mindless games to jump over to the PlayStation 4 brand.

With that said I did see the better specs that for some reason Mark Cerny didn’t touch on(the mind of a developer). CPU and GPU on one chip : x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores CPU and a 1.84 TFLOPS AMD next-generation Radeon™ based GPU. Speed is not listed but since it is a Jaguar APU paired with a AMD Radeon GPU, then that makes it very interesting. I just wonder what Radeon GPU its based on. It will have a Blu-Ray at 6X speed. I wonder if it will be quad layer (100/128GB)? The press release didn’t say.

So my opinion and impression of the PS4 has improved quite a bit after the event Today. Still I wonder why a bit more on the specs. It just helps Sony, to know a bit more.

I guess now E3 will be all about games and not hardware, except what the final specs, design and price point(s) are going to be. The wait continues…

  • I like it, but what the PS Vita? Has nothing more to offer!?

  • Lack of backwards compatibility, forcing streaming and preloading based on my gaming habits, and an unappealing launch lineup has killed any interest I had in the PS4.

  • Party chat and true backwards-compatibility please.

  • shape of the controller not much improved, but still have to wait to have a real grasp of it. how about the graphics?? not sure its much different from PS3. but can’t wait to play KZ shadow fall. much of the focus is to make the PS4 more social device and more interactive. was hoping to improve graphics like never before and to blow out any competition.

  • Didn’t realize that its going to come with a headset, pretty cool. Guess I’ll see which I end up using either my Sony wireless headset or the one that comes in the box(corded?)

I think with all the things it will come with, a ~$400 price sounds more than reasonable I’ll probably pick up the higher priced package though.

I’m fine with no backward compatibility. Am I the only one that has a PS3, so that it isn’t a problem for me?
Newsflash, a ton of people don’t care enough about that to not buy it. Trust me. Is it something I wish it had? Yes, but I’m not going to let that sole factor influence whether I buy a PS4 or not.

    @neuropunk,

Ok, have fun with Nintendo then. :)

  • As great as new hardware is that will not make up for lack of creativity in current generation developers. Bright side looking forward for what they have planned with the system in regards to indie developers and how it will help out new up and comming developers and small studios. Share the knowledge keep it up PlayStation.

  • @ #136: You have already played KZ: Shadowfall if you have played Killzone 2 and/or 3. It’s no different, so you have already played it.

Very sorry that all you care about are graphics and not good games.

Well, I went with Nintendo since they make superior games. Sure, their graphics aren’t good, but they’re games are better by lightyears.

Nintendo will be smoking the **** out of Sony. Sorry but Sony is going to get pwned again, especially since they keep on making mediocre games that nobody cares about and/or buys (such as Infamous and Killzone series).

  • as excited as iam for the future im sad to see my PS3 go :( but over all this looks amazing!!! I cant wait to get my hands on it every thing I saw today just blew my mind Thank you so much SONY :D!

  • soo exscited my ps3 is circling the drain, but serously those controllers?! they look like some f***ing Madcatz knock offs i hate slanded in trigers at least i hope there will be Sixaxis support i have a 300$ controller i would rather like to keep

  • @ Neuropunk as kind as i can put this … not being a jerk.. Nintendo caters to children and has no love for hardcore fanbase only robbing the cradle. This has been true since wii was released so have fun playing kiddy games bro, stick with nintendo.

  • I ‘m super excited so far… 8 Gigs of Ram, Wow! Can’t wait to see those Sony exclusives on the PS4!

Drop any crazy ideas of preventing me/friends and family members selling, trading, borrowing or buying used games and don’t push “Always on DRM/games” and i’ll be ready to stand outside at midnight to support your system and business.

    My .02

  • thats freakin amazing! love the new system and its features

  • @neuropunk

    1) Stop playing Uncharted 3 Multiplayer if you don’t enjoy “pew pew” and multiplayer.

    2) Go play Ni No Kuni.
