Excellent presentation. Very excited for the PS4, more excited than I have been for a console in many years. :)

PS4 will not natively be able to play PS3 games it will it be able to play some? I just got PS3 3 months ago, i only have 3 games in my PS3 collection: Uncharted 3 drake’s deception game of the year edition, need for speed most wanted, and dust 514. If i can play those games i will be cool. It just sad that i cant play my old PS2 games… I know i can have my ps2 out so i can play them but who wants to do that? it takes up too much spce in my entertainment area. It would be so nice if i could have just one nice medium sized system that was capable of playing all my games. The cloud is cool, buying ps2 games off the ps store is kinda cool, but what would be better is if i could play all my PS1 PS2, PS3, and soon to be PS4 games discs all in one system!

Nice controller though.

WOW, PS4…sounds like you guys have thought of everything to make this system a must have. One question backwards compatability, consumers have spent alot of money on games for past consoles like ps,ps2,ps3…are we going to have to have one of each console? That could be very expensive.

I’ve been reading most of the comments, and I am slightly frightened that I will have to buy all new everything for this, mostly worried about games purchased both outside of and within PSN…is it true that there is no backwards compatibility? This is what scared me about PS3, even though I got it and loved it, it was still a letdown to not play the games like Ratchet Deadlocked, and the other hundred or so childhood games. I want this…but not enough to ditch the PS3.

*applauds Sony*

Great Conference! The spec on the PS4 looks amazing! I’m really impressed with how ya’ll presented just enough info to get us excited, while holding back cruical info (like the price, release date, and what exactly the PS4 looks like) for E3. Also, I’m sure a few of Sony’s mega exclusives like a posible Uncharted 4, Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes (or is it Phantom Pain or Metal Gear Solid V???), and the mysterious new Final Fantasy game. The new Killzone and Infamous PS4 games, looks like Sony has some kick-ass titles from launch! I’m saving my pennies (literally), hopefully I can buy a PS4 by September of 2014. It’s an exciting time to be a Sony Playstation gamer!

The ps4 sounds amazing and I’m eagerly awaiting the holiday season so I can get my hands on one. My only complaint about the event is that I actually felt like I had been slapped in the face when capcom took the stage and mentioned Monster Hunter seeing as nintendo seems to be getting all of the new games from this franchise. I’m sure they will port some of them to the Vita but we, the playstation community, the people who supported this game and largely helped attribute to the success of the franchise should not have to settle for that. It’s disappointing but I still hold on to some hope that we will see a new MH game for the vita or playstation console.

there is no reason for the ps4 to play old games from ps3, if they do that the system will cost another 200 dollars to buy, i think i can handle just switching back to my ps3 to play the old games instead of paying another 200 just for backwards playing on a NEW system, this is the ps4 it doesnt need to play ps3 discs, no where does it say your ps3 games will play on a system that didnt exist yet, stop getting angry about it

For folks asking for Backwards Compatibility for the PS4..simple solution: KEEP YOUR PS3!!! I don’t know why this is even a issue, when you can simply just hook up your PS3, when you want to play PS3 games, and hook up your PS4, when you want to play PS4 games! It’s silly, ya’ll are asking for B/C for the PS4, that will tack on a extra $200 to the PS4, when you can simply use the console YOU ALREADY OWN! Common Sense people, Common sense.

robby-dog said:

February 21st, 1:19 pm

Well if it was only as easy as hooking up your ps3 to play but some of us have experienced the ylod and before I spend loads of money on a ps4. I want to know if it’s going to be worth it and I wonder what measures have been taken to prevent the ps4 from simular things such as ylod. I also figure all my ps,ps2, and ps3 games, I’m willing to pay the extra $200 bucks for a console that can do it all besides having to purchase 4 different consoles. Just using Common sense thats all.

Do these Sony executives attend Toastmasters or something? The first two presenters did a fine job. I guess I’m a dork like that, but with all these tech events, I always pay attention to how these people are at public speaking. Part of the reason this event was so engaging was because of how passionate the speakers were.

goldenratio13 said:

February 21st, 1:44 pm

Who cares if they’re good at public speaking or not. Most of the presenters were software developers who spend 90% of their time in front of a workstation designing great games. They don’t have time to stand in front of a mirror in their boxer shorts rehearsing lines day after day. That’s what public relations is for. As far as I’m concerned I don’t want them wasting their time on stuff like that. Better to be in the studio developing great content.

This great news and all.. specs are good and the features are nice. But not having backwards compatibility is something that will prevent me from purchasing the console. Just as it is with my ps3. I have an Original 60 gig PlayStation 3 and have not and WILL not buy a slim version of the ps3 due to the fact that as of today, I still have more ps2 games than ps3 games… and having to switch consoles to play a ps2 game is really not something I should do.. NOR should I have to purchase the game I already have again, as a download in the PlayStation store.. This is my own personal opinion of course and as it is always the case, probably in the minority of overall opinions being shared about the PlayStation 4. I don’t see how you find it reasonable not to have this backwards compatibility. Having an option to download and I assume PURCHASE another copy of the ps3 game you already have might seem okay for you.. but for me, its not. I don’t want to have a ps3 game take up room on my hard drive and have to buy another copy of it.. when I already own a copy of the physical disc itself. That’s a big negative for me and I guess I will be one of the few who will have to say that my PlayStation enjoyment will end with the PlayStation 3

Why not just download it the HD mp4 from right here on the blog and put it on your ps3?
It’s not even hard to do using a program like IDM. I don’t see the problem.

This breaks my heart. I play games to escape reality. I do not want to connect with real life in anyway. Not real people or real time. I’m a very solitary player. I don’t want to play with or rely on others. I understand why people would want to, but I don’t…and unfortunately, it seems like they want everyone and everything to be connected. Likely to up advertisements and up their sales. I am not comfortable with that. Seeing others progress and watching them play live, just put me right back in real life. Life with real problems and real issues that I’m trying to forget for awhile. Makes me, a player, who plays to forget the real world for a little while, sad.

KOKOPELLeigh said:

February 21st, 7:36 pm

Okay okay, I obviously have my issues but at this point, if I could ask for one thing, it’s bigger script. Or at least the ability to adjust the size of the onscreen text. I’m kinda old (by gaming standards) and I don’t have a 90″ TV screen. If I want to sit across my living room and play a game without getting up and approaching the television 20 times an hour just to read a choice of things to say (Mass Effect for example) or mission objections/locations, I should be able to do that.

What a great conference!!! I still am in awe! I can’t wait and even told my wife and kids that we will be getting one day 1. (my kids want to stand in line with me, my wife groaned… I think she gets a bit sick of the pile of games I have bought over the years.

To people talking about Backwards compati. It cant happen without a cell, did you guys not get the point of the architecture change? First off PS3 was a tricky thing to program because of the unconventional cell. It means things were done differently. The cell costs much and hasn’t advanced since the 1st iteration. You think it would be good to have that again or a new peice of tech? With a new tech that is no longer using power pc but x86 you will have more games coming over from pc devs… like the witcher and such. It will be great. It will also prevent bc of ps3. and If you think emulation you are crazy… High end pcs can’t even do that (not just do to power but how cell is programmed)

midnightshade said:

February 21st, 8:20 pm

Also if you own an HDTV you probably have 3 HDMI slots and a component out. So PS3, PS4 and your cable box all be attached with no switching cords…so whats the problem Its not like there is a SD-HD conversion benefit like there was from PS2-Ps3 so don’t ditch your ps3 keep it along side your PS4. Thats what I will be doing.

@474 – Most social features can be turned off. Sony knows better than to make that stuff mandatory. Look at trophy alerts on facebook.. you can opt in if you want it. This will most likly be the same. You can probably prevent people form seeing you (the vita has options to turn off social things too).

As for script.. what size TV are you using. I had a 32″ in our basement way to small as the couch is 14′ away… the 50′ inch I got for $600 at x-mas really solves that issue. HDTVS have gotten cheap!

KOKOPELLeigh said:

February 21st, 8:42 pm

It is a 36 inch tv and about 16 feet away. I have a feeling I will need to take your advice and buy a larger TV before I buy the PS4. They (the game developers) are like artists who don’t want script covering up their artwork and I doubt that will change with the new gen. Guess I’ll have to wait a tad bit longer to buy the system. But hey, I’m not opposed to used games at all.

disclaimer- I do not now or ever worked for scea or any sony entity [Not for Lack of trying] . just guesses here, but im pretty good at this stuff i called thq’s bankrupcy and game stop shrinking and with in the next two years being completely gone years ago…and you have small limit so sorry for multi post, not spamming

You showed no real system, so eithier A. You havent decided on a final look yet, or B. its a stradegy

You tell us this stuff get people looking forward to it while at the same time giving us info you knew would stir up the fans and make people mad like the no back play. Eithier to throw microsoft off so they have no real clue what the ps4 really is so they are only trying to out due the fake facade you’ve cleverly painted for them or so you can show up at E3 and act like hero’s when you announce you guys fixed it all and give off the image of listening to your consumers which is actually a really good marketing ploy and will move more ps4’s.

Fenrir_1987 said:

February 22nd, 12:12 am

My guess A. as i said before marketing ploy and a hell of a good one at that or B. you announce last second and shock everyone by revealing the video’s and features shown arent from the Ps4 but the lovable and still largely untapped powerful system sitting in our homes right now.

Everyones shocked, X whatever their calling their box this year is giving you dirty looks as they and their fan boys relize that they need a next gen system as theirs has been maxed for a while now and ps3 is still going strong. You’ve already said several times the ps3 hasnt reached the end of its life and that we dont need a new system just yet. I didnt see a single screen that was something a ps3 couldnt pull off. Just to be clear i could just be crazy and you guys could have approved all this……in which case well, May be time to get some blood over there.

I really don’t get all of the crying about the PS4 not having B/C for PS3 games. If you want to play PS3 games then, KEEP YOUR PS3!!!! It’s not complicated people! The PS3 still has alot of really great games like “The Last of Us”, “Grand Theft Auto V”, and “God of War Ascension” scheduled for release this year! The PS4 will play PS4 games (as it should be!) Also, the PS4 won’t be able to use the Dual Shock 3 controller, you MUST have Dual Shock 4 controllers, to play with the PS4! I don’t even see this as being a problem. If you want to play PS3 games, then hook up your PS3 console, to play them on! If you want to play PS4 games, then hook up your PS4 console, to play them on! It’s simple, I really don’t see what’s all the hoopla over the PS4 not being B/Cfor PS3 games is all about?

nope not getting a ps4 UNLESS it has these things

1. BACKWARDS playablity with PS1,PS2, and PS3 or just PS3 games
2. have a reasonably price console at lunch and not a HUGE PRICE CONSOLE
3.make more consoles to meet demand so we won’t have people KILLING FOR IT
4. don’t make something like the Wounder book for just one game and not have support for it
5. please don’t make a full body motion control the PS move fails somewhat

and for PSvita

2. more support for it

that is all

It’s coming out this Christmas too, which I feel is too soon.

They need to give Beyond 2 Souls, The Last of Us, and GOW Accession time to sell.

As much as I want one, I’m going to wait until they get the backwards compatibility worked out.

I see this like the Vita.. Give it some time and they will drop the price and have your older stuff working on it.

SpooNManX said:

February 22nd, 2:40 pm

This is a different time now with gaming. How do you think the Apple crowd would feel if they announced
iOS 7.0 is coming out in 6 months and none of your older software will work on it? NOT WELL to understate it.

Sony has stated they want us to feel about our DLC purchases as we would our retail discs.
Now if they make all of that incompatible it’s going to feel like wasted money.

I also have my Plus account paid through until 2015. What’s going to happen with that?

These are things that are important to current PS3 owners who want to continue with Sony.

Personally, I don’t really feel like buying a new system. I hate a lot of the new ideas they’re putting into the controller. I just want to play games, not have all this extra garbage on there that I may never use. I’ll admit though, I’d love to see Diablo games come back to consoles.

My personal, instant buy system seller would be a new generation motorcycle racing game similar to Road Rash. You just can’t beat some of those old-time favorites!
