This is Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. First of all, I would like to thank the PlayStation.Blog team for the opportunity to share with you the latest developments in our game.

We were recently in San Francisco as part of a tour to show A Realm Reborn to members of the gaming media. Our guests had a chance to take the game for a spin, after which I sat down with them for an interview. I expect that reports will be hitting various online media outlets starting today, so please keep an eye out!

We consider it one of our missions to reacquaint gamers all over the world with the wonders of FINAL FANTASY. To this end, we’ll be incorporating the most memorable elements of the series into A Realm Reborn. Mind you, this won’t be limited only to the game’s launch; in subsequent patches, we plan to keep adding more great stuff from FINAL FANTASY’s 25-year history. For starters, adventurers will be able to take on the Crystal Tower (FFIII) raid dungeon, do battle with classic summons (such as Ifrit, Titan, and Leviathan), and ride magitek armor (FFVI). It goes without saying that there’ll be moogles and chocobos as well. Your trusty steed will fight beside you in battle, and can also be dressed up in neat costumes. Future patches will introduce series mainstay Gilgamesh, and also the fun and excitement of the Gold Saucer (FFVII). The list goes on and on!

We’ve also released new screens to show our progress on the PS3 version. Though performance is still being optimized, I’m sure you’ll agree that the visual quality is almost on par with the Windows PC version.

My team and I are very much looking forward to the beta test, which is about to commence. PS3 players will be able to jump in to start testing when the third phase of the Beta launches. If you haven’t already signed up to become a tester, you can do so at the Beta Tester Application Site. We want as many people as possible to join in. I hope to see you there!

We’ll continue to release new info on A Realm Reborn, so be sure to keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog. Alternately, you can visit our official site along with the Developers’ Blog. The blog regularly hosts the latest behind-the-scenes info straight from the development floor, and you’re bound to get a kick out of the info.

Thank you for reading! We hope we can rely on your support for FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn as well as the FINAL FANTASY series at large!

  • Legacy Campaign member here. I’ve been extremely excited for the PS3 version of the game for years now. Final Fantasy XIV may have had a rough start, but under Yoshida’s guidance, version 1 ended on a very good note. I have nothing but high hopes for Realm Reborn and I cannot wait to play. I’m just sad we don’t get to play until Phase 3 of the tests.

But awesome, Gilgamesh? I didn’t know he would be around. That makes me ecstatic- he’s always been my favorite recurring villain. Let us fight like men and women who dress like men. For Gilgamesh, it is morphing time!

  • @50

I kinda just lumped 1-10 together to shorten my post for the most part. I can be long winded when typing. I ALWAYS run out of the 1500 characters. That said, while I’ve played every FF except 4 as they’ve come out in America dating back to FF1, in terms of being able to play the games beginning to end, FF1 through FF10 can all be lumped together in terms of their gameplay/battle system. They all have their own major diiferences in their battle systems to where I 100% understand where you’re coming from. But what I’m saying is, if you understand the battle system from any FF1-10, regardless of the order or how many of them you’ve played even if it was just say FF7 for example and no others………if that gamer wanted to they could immediately pick up any other FF 1-10 and understand how to play it and get through the entire game (at least the main quest line). They all play the same way, same kind of menus……they all have the same “rules” so to speak. I think in that way, generally speaking, 1-10 can all be lumped together in terms of gameplay.

  • I WANT THE 10 DOLLARS EVERY ONE ELSE GOT!!!!!!!!

  • Personally i can’t wait, For those who are gonna be mmo newbies in ff14. My advice, talk to other players and explore around ur home city before jumping into the game too fast. mmo be design are meant for group play (though ff14 will be solo friendly).

Unlike most recent mmo, ff14 (similar to ff11) will be 1 character can play ALL classes/jobs. Unlike most mmo, you lvl up classes before unlocking jobs. Also crafting and gathering profession such as cooking, or mining, will be tied to classes (miner etc) (see alpha video). From what i read up, this game will have a good amount of content for players, both group based and solo-able. A lil known fact yoshida is a HUGE fan of mmo, and played most (if not all) recent mmorpg (Dark age of camalot his fav mmo though).

Also noted jobs are going to have job based gear similar to ff11s artifact gear. And ff11 character customization will be massive, u have 5 races, two clans per race, and in both genders, as well as a large array of custmomization.

  • i hate the ps3 text limit -.-

anyway…. ARR CC will have alot of choices to make when it comes to ur character. Pretty much think of dragons dogma, might not be as MASSIVE as that one but gives u an idea of how much detail u can tweak on ur character.

For those who are dcuo players and that being ur first mmo. FF14 will be nothing like dcuo, nor is dcuo on ps3 anything like most mmo. In all honestly dcuo feels to me like a playstayion home meets tps (third person shooter) though i had fun in dcuo it to me felt nothing on how an mmo should feel.

Also the level cap in arr will be 50, and yoshida stated it will increase over time. Also about the sub fee, at most u just need to pay $12-$13 and unless they change it u can pay via crysta using those ultimate pay mmo cards. i played ff11 for 7-8 years and afford the fee while working part time. tip is try to pay a few mnths in advance at a time.

  • Gilgamesh, Gold Saucer, and Magitek armor? Oh yeah, consider me signed up baby!

  • Just signed up! Hopefully they’re looking for an opinion from a MMO noob like myself who loves the FF series.

  • Just signed up for the beta! ^_^

  • I signed up with the FFXIII code for both PC/PS3. Here’s hoping I get chosen for beta phase 2.

  • Sign up while back but never got invite to join the Beta Testing yet, hope to get pick. :) I will always be FF Fans forever and ever. ;)

  • Wow. Hope I didn’t throw that card with the Member’s Club code away…

  • Mr. Naoki yoshida. Theres a possibility of using PS Vita cross controler function in FF XV for skills shortcuts, touch pad to emule de mouse and a virtual keybord (that would be the most amazing thing)? Thanks.

  • Yess! finally the beta started! I can’t be more excited about the changes they made to it. It’s awesome that they added different content from other Final Fantasy game titles, I’ve been looking forward to this beta for along time, I can’t wait to get my hands on this beta, I could only hope that I get picked for the beta.

  • Signed up over 2 weeks ago… Hope I get in! = ^.^ =

F.Y.I. – For those hoping to get in if you don’t know already you will have to purchase the game if you get selected for beta in order to participate in Beta. Just so you know. ;)

  • Tried signing up for it a few weeks ago and the application kept glitching on me. Glad it’s working again! As a longtime FFXI player, I gotta admit, I was pretty disappointed by the original version of FFXIV. I’m pretty excited for the beta to come along, even moreso to be able to actually play the game on my PS3.

P.S. Please bring FFXI to the PS3 in some shape or form. I’m not big on PC gaming anymore and I hate having to load up my 360 for it. Would kill to have it on my PS3~

  • One question I would love an answer to though.. will us Ps3 players be able to purchase ‘Crysta’ to pay our FFX|V subscriptions through the PSN Store? Or will we have to go to the Square Enix Account holders website like the PC players? :)

  • @66 if it’s anything like FFXI is on the 360/PS2, it’s probably going to be maintained completely online here still and not through the PSN. That said, it’ll probably have an option to load the PS3’s web browser and handle it directly there.

  • GRRRRR… Can’t Wait! Sucks we have to wait till Phase 3 for Ps3 Beta to start. ;(
Like 2-3 months from now according to the road map .pdf

Played FFXI on Ps2 from ’04-’09 on Midgardsormr Server. ^_^

  • In the meantime here is an awesome Official video just released from SE giving us a nice tour of the zones. ;)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW6fL5X1fM4

  • This is great! i hope i get to play the beta.

  • I cant wait been waiting for a longtime still playing ff 11 7 years now wow!

  • Nice to see some PS3 screenies! Looks very good. I’m really looking forward to the launch of this game. I’m praying that it all goes smoothly this time. I miss the old Square so much, hoping this team can do wonders for the FF series. FFXI was a terrific experience. Really hope they can pull this off on PS3.

  • want to be in!

  • awesome cant wait =D

  • @52 Darth-Krayt – I think I get what you mean. The same sort of user interface, same sort of abilities classification — attacks, magic, items, and a token ability — same enemy-party lineups. Yeah, I can see that.

@54 RaveniaDarkfae – The ability for one character to take up several classes is great, for me, since I tend to use a character as an avatar rather than a puppet. Still wish I made my Hume taller, though (didn’t realize the basis for heights was more Japanese; but, I rationalize by my fave FF class, Red Mage, being sort of “Medium” in any role it plays).

    @62 doctorSTRANG – Yeah, that’d be ace!

  • This is going to be great! Applied and hope I get selected! Couldn’t find my members code though, lost it during a move :(

  • If I don’t get access to the Beta….
I WILL FIND A WAY!… these games are truly amazing!..

  • i think im inlove with this game

  • good news!

  • Just signed up. Hopefully I’ll get accepted to the Beta.

off topic; Square please port Front Mission 5 to PSN or make a PSN variant of “Scars of the War”

  • I’m gonna beta on my PC since I already own the game. I hope it works out, I really wanted to like it the first time around but there was no denying that it sucked. I still put in a few months on it cause it seemed to me that it was just a few things holding it back. Anyway, I’ll give it another go in beta and a few months of sub since I don’t have to buy the game again

  • just great i really waiting, it seen to be much better than final fantasy 13.

  • long survey :) ;p

  • The game is looking good.

  • Square-Enix sucks and needs to die. They have not released a good game in like forever.

I bought a PS3 for turn based JRPGs, and the PS3 does not have a single turn based JRPG in the same vein as FF7-FF10 or Xenogears.

So sad when an Xbox 360 exclusive has the best JRPG of last gen (Lost Odyssey).

I bought a PS3 and waited 7 years for a good turn based JRPG and both Squeenix and Sony let me down, and they let themselves down. Those FFXIII games are freaking horrendous. Whatever happened to good turn based JRPGs? Who the hell wants this MMO ****???? Oh and let me guess, you have to buy the game and then keep on paying for it again and again month after month, right?

  • I’m looking forward to this game. Sorely, it won’t be in my mother language, Spanish (yet). I have no problem there, as you can see, but most of my friends only know that language, so they won’t be able of enjoying the game as they should… or maybe they will use me as an interpreter, which I prefer not xD

  • Hopefully this will make up for FFX-2, XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2, XIII-3,XIII-4 etc.. making that FF13 series into a NHL series NHL09, NHL10 FF09, FF10 like a new girl power final fantasy year after year.

  • So I can visit Balamb Garden, Besaid Island and Zanarkand? Eh I know I can’t.

  • When will it come out? I want it now!! The PS3 era will end soon and SE still has lots of amazing unreleased PS3 games! It’s not a good idea!!

  • Still playing Final Fantasy XI on my PS3 just disappointed the last PS2 game in Japan Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin, the latest expansion in March 26, is not being released in the US. BTW the installation of FFXI when I converted my 60 GB to the 1TB took a loooong time. I do hope to get chosen to play the Beta and crossing fingers to have a Collector’s Edition of FFXIV for PS3. Make sure you guys buy a keyboard to type.

  • HOW ABOUT THAT FFVERSUSXIII?!

Oh who am I kidding SE forgot that existed lol.

  • Anyone remember those squaresoft dial up lines you called when you got stuck in a game?

    Good times

  • I hope I get picked, I love Final Fantasy and I would definitely be good at spotting any flaws.

  • Anyone here know when this so called 3rd phase of testing is going to begin?? This year..next..year after that?

  • since 2010 im waiting for this game.. and since the first moment that i see the beta tester aplication site i apply for the beta. in this game i would like to see some integation with the ps vita. because with the ps vita is easy to type but with the ps3 controller no.

  • Oh great. So not only is there a cost to pay for the game (which will probably be £44,99 rrp uk) but there will be a subscription monthly cost too? I played ff1,2,3,4,5,6,7,7 dirge,8,910,10-2,12,13,13-2. I never played 11 gil due to subscription costs each month… I will probably not be this either due to same reason. Ff10 was probably the peak of glory with its battle time system and the mix of holy, dark, ice, fire, thunder, water and zombie elements as well as a few others.
The summons then were acrually worth using.
In ff,12,13 and 13-2 things got a bit too experimental. With their summons etc. They wasnt even worth the glory of using. Even after 300 hours of gameplay on ff13.
If the battle system has deteriated for this game too and along with the good storyline and sense of adventure combined with the extortionate subscription charges. I’m sad to announce that i will probably no longer continue to have interest in this game and any future releases…

  • So stoked for this damn game!! I’ve been waiting for its appearance on ps3!!! Stoked!!

  • I just filled me out one of those apps. I ve played almost every final fantasy game that has come across my path. I absolutly love final fantasy 4,6,7,8,9, and 10 i actually liked ten alot in my opinon one of the best story line in the whole lot of final fantasy games 11 i never got to play 12 i enjoyed the battle and equitment. I unfortunatly havent had a chance to play this game on pc of course cause i would rather play the gameon a console. Im not to big on the pc gaming it hhurts my back lol. But this is the first ps3 mmorpg of its kind and i would love to test this b4it hits the shelf.
