New PS All-Stars: Zeus & Isaac, MediEvil + The Unfinished Swan Level

Seth Killian's Avatar Posted by Lead Game Designer, Sony Santa Monica Studio

Hi guys,

Happy to be back to tell you about some new surprises from PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. More costumes? More minions? Well, okay, yes. But also more new characters!

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: Zeus

Our newest challengers are Isaac Clarke from Electronic Arts’ Dead Space, and Zeus from… well, from some of the foundational myths of Western society, but also from a little PlayStation game you might know called God of War by SCEA Santa Monica Studio.

How did these two emerge as All-Stars from the vast PlayStation multiverse? Synchronicity. We were talking with some friends over at EA who were hard at work on Dead Space 3, and with a lot of Dead Space fans on our team and all the cool tools at Isaac’s disposal, some quick concepts emerged and we knew he’d be a great addition. We’ve also wanted to add another “heavy,” hard-hitting character into All-Stars (Big Daddy was getting lonely), and with all the work on God of War: Ascension around Sony Santa Monica, Zeus emerged as a perfect fit.

As you might remember, Zeus is kind of an arrogant jerk, but one thing you can say for him is that he does not mess around. As King of the Gods, he’s a big guy, used to getting his way, and he hits HARD. Of course he’s got some cool combos, but his primary offense is centered around fewer, but more powerful strikes that generate a ton of AP and send enemies flying. He can power up virtually all of his attacks into a “charged” version with all kinds of new effects, giving him one of the biggest move lists in the game. Super-armored rushing punches, a clone move, teleports, and lightning bolts–lots and lots of lightning bolts. Your best bet against Zeus is to stay on his good side (aka behind him), or far away.

His level 1 is a giant Lightning Clap that lacks range but has a great area of effect. Level 2 lets Zeus take to the skies and fly anywhere before exploding in a deadly lightning storm. His level 3 “Wrath of Zeus” takes you to Olympus to fight a godlike 100-foot tall Zeus, and in true boss-fight form, he can wipe out half the screen with a single strike.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: Isaac

Through a combination of playtesting and staying true to his original series, Isaac emerged over the course of development as a strong mid-range fighter using the unique weapons and Kinesis/Stasis abilities you’ll recognize from the Dead Space series (think somewhere between Drake and Jak, with a lot of twists). He has some very interesting long-range options (the Bouncing Bola acts like sniper rifle that bounces off of walls, getting more powerful with each bounce) and he’s got some great moves up close, but just as in Dead Space, he’s at his best keeping foes safely out of his face. He can advance or retreat while firing his trusty Plasma Cutter, toss proximity mines, use Stasis attacks to freeze opponents, or spin slowly moving Ripper blades at enemies with a blast of Kinesis torque.

His level 1 super fires a supercharged stasis burst and then overloads his Plasma Cutter, which can be aimed anywhere, even at very long range. His level 2 super overloads his Kinesis module creating a bubble that launches nearby enemies away at “terminal” velocity, and Isaac’s level 3 takes you into space where he blows the airlock, sucking everyone into space for a quick game of something like “Asteroids” where Isaac flies around blasting opponents and space debris into dust.

Finally, what better to welcome new characters than with a new stage? The new “Graveyard” level mashes up MediEvil‘s Graveyard opening with… The Unfinished Swan. While we start in recognizable MediEvil territory (complete with pop-up zombies and a wisecracking gargoyle), the “Swan” elements are shown off with a mid-match whiteout and ink splatters that slowly reveal the emerging structures. There are lots of little Swan touches throughout the stage, from the hidden labyrinth, to a balloon, the King, and of course the Unfinished Swan itself makes a cameo.

So how do All-Stars fans get their hands on the new stuff? The new DLC pack hits the PlayStation Store on March 19th. As before with the recently released “Fearless” stage, the new “Graveyard” stage will be free in online ranked matches and $1.99 if you want to own it. As for Zeus and Isaac, I’m very happy to announce they will come to North America FREE as a redeemable downloadable voucher code packed in with the new God of War: Ascension, which launches on March 12th. When Zeus and Isaac Clarke go live in All-Stars on March 19th (one week later), you can use your code to redeem them any time after they are live. For anybody who doesn’t pick up God of War: Ascension (but of course that’s only crazy people–it’s got what I think is the most epic final battle in the series’ history), the characters will also be for sale in the PSN Store for $4.99 each.

I’ll have some more details coming on the new challengers in the coming weeks — until then, see you online!

For the next batch of DLC I can imagine the new Assassin from Assassin’s Creed IV and hopefully the new Crash Bandicoot from the unannounced Crash 2013 game if it is announced by then (I would prefer classic Crash but it seems Superbot are using the latest versions for every character.

Also a couple of questions for Seth; will the pre-order bonus only be for North America? And why the change from DLC characters being free for the first two weeks?

I will like to say is that it is dissappointing for people buying new characters, just let them be free. ALSO, I REALLY AGREE WITH PEOPLE THAT SAY TO BRING OUT CRASH AND SPYRO. CRASH AND SPYRO ARE THE MOST ICONIC CHARACTRES FOR PLAYSTATION. PROTEST FOR CRASH AND SPYRO!!!!!!!!!

Crazy excited about Isaac! Zeus, well there’s already Kratos, but still nice nice.. I always thought Joel from the last of us would have been a great rival for Isaac if you get my drift. And since there are two GOW reps and two Cole variants, that means it seems possible for another .. METAL GEAR “!” hero to be included, if once again you get my drift. And don’t include a Heavy Rain character, but a stage, minion, or any element from it would be cool. For third party, my only wish would be an Assassin’s Creed Rep. Other than that, keep up the good work!

Funny idea.

Two questions; 1 will the voucher be good on the collectors edition? And 2, will be able to keep dishing out DLC every month, because I will definitely help back that up. Out of all the problems with the game lack of characters was my biggest complaint, so I really ope that a lot more characters will be added, even after the PS4 launch, because this is one of my favorite PS3 games. Keep up the good work and hopefully you guys could maybe add some more unique players like Sy and Kat, uniqueness makes an interesting fight.

Rip wasted $60
This game served me around 12 hours tops, and that’s including the last 2 dlc characters, why are you going to charge $5 for characters on a game that you know isn’t even fully finished, the glitches and bugs, the generic and awful interface, the lack of a campaign, Superbot had so much potential to make All-Stars seem like ” That’s PlayStation’s fighting game right there” but no, with a boast that its been in development for more then 2 years you’d expect some great things, but unfortunately this concept was passed away from Naughty Dog to work on TLOU but what do you expect from a new developer, that got departed from Sony because even they knew things went wrong, If you still play this and find it enjoyable, ok, great, I appreciate your devotion and enjoyment in this game but to me this was a failure and utter crap, you cant just plaster Playstation all over this, add 20 characters, have some poorly made story mode, badly thought of levels, and the laziest combat design i have ever seen since god knows what. Now we have Sana Monica Studios reeling in sweet PS fan cash to support this game.

Should of just waited till Naughty Dog was free.

Love the game and dlc characters look awesome but why do you have to make these characters 5 dollars and kat and emmet free? Sadly I am probably not going to get this dlc

March 12th, 2:56 pm

The BEST thing you can at least do is make the 2 characters and the new map a $10 deal. Or separate for people who rather waste $5 on 1 character. If you think about it, it saves us money, and makes you more money for people who want the level but only have $11 to pay for the 2 characters (like me -.-).

Another thing, just ideas to change the “belt system” as me and my friend call it. When were on a winning streak the points should go up by 2, then win again 4, again 6 etc. Same with the losing streak. Its REALLY annoying winning 11 games a row and go up slowly by 2’s.

As for future charcaters, crash bandicoot blah blah all him and stuff…

Hello! I can’t wait! Zeus is a killer looking playable character! I can’t wait to pit him against Kratos the weekend after release! My best friend won’t know what hit him! As for Isaac Clarke, I have never played Dead Space, but I’ll see how he is. I’m also very excited for the new level, as it looks great too! I agree with anyone saying bring in Crash Bandicoot, but if possible, can we see Sephiroth or Cloud?!? That would kick something major! Good job and keep the DLC coming!

I am liking Zeus, especially since my buddy beats me with Kratos all the time. I know people say this all the time, but please bring in Crash, Spryo, and Lara Croft!!! And maybe some Resident Evil Characters and some Mortal Kombat characters. I’d like to see maybe a Dino Crisis stage or a DMC stage.. That’s my opinion…

Hey Santa Monica! Here is a small list of characters that you might have not thought of and their rivals

Chell vs Corvo (

Chell honestly would be the most unique and interesting character to see fighting in this series.

Big Sister vs Chimera (Or possibly Corvo if you don’t think of a better one for Chell)
Wanderer vs Jake Muller
Gwyn, Lord of Cinder vs Dragonborn
Yoshimitsu vs Scorpion

and a couple of Mix Up levels

Rapture x Flow
Aperture Science x Escape Plan
Modnation Racers x Katamari

Also I agree with adding Zeus, the game does need a bit more heavy hitters. Also needs more diverse characters that feel all their own. Some of the characters sort of feel way too similar (Emmette Graves, Radec, Nathan Drake for example.)

KnucklesTattoo said:

I’m happy for two new characters and two new levels, but at $12, I’m unhappy again. That’s a bit much for a rather small addon to the game. Through in a few more maps, minions, trophies for the last DLC characters and add Crash and Spyro and then that price might be OK, but right now, that’s just unreasonable. Thanks for the effort, but not until the price comes down.

Seth Killian I’ve been sticking with sony since they first released the first playstation system and I am a big fan of your PS ALL Stars work I’m glad you guys decided to come out with more new characters but I feel like everyone wants to see crash, spyro the dragon, klonoa, snake, lara croft, tomba, any fighter from bloody roar or anything. please sumbit any type of useful feed back that you can give I’ll continue to support all sony games not just PS all stars.

Hey, Seth I know this way late but love the ideas and concept you and Superbot put into these characters. I wanted to know when are you guys are going to add more features in the game for an example: Stock, with Time Limit Create a Stage, and let people choose the stage on Ranked Matches if that’s possible. Stuff like that I know you don’t want to be similar to Smash Bros. I understand but I think it will be cool to add those features. Specially Stock with time limit because certain matches will (UBER Dumb Long) Lol. So yeah if you and Santa Monica Plus Superbot can work something that will be amazing.

I pre-ordered god of war ascension, I paid it just like people in north america (and I think I also spent more money), but I have no voucher. I must pay 10 € to have those characters even if I have ascension from day one just because I’m european. This is unfair. I hope you do something to fix this.

can you guys try adding vocaloids like hatsune miku, i prefer haku but miku seems more popular add them as fighting characters. It seems more reasonable as a minion but it seems fun I tried them as a mugen characters though. miku does have a signature leek and she sings so like parappa level 3 finish maybe. I really just thought of it now.
