March 2013 PSN Top Sellers

We’re back with March 2013’s North American Top Sellers (see Europe’s charts here). This month we have added PlayStation Mobile to the lineup.

Newcomers to the PlayStation lists include Terraria, an endearing, yet challenging side-scroller where you craft, dig and explore, the highly anticipated BioShock Infinite, and the bad-ass PS Vita title Nun Attack. Speaking of Vita games, fans of the JRPG series Atelier will be excited to learn that recently released Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland battled all the way to the top of its list.

God of War: Ghost of Spartarose again to appear on the top 5 PSP games, and finally the PS2 classic vehicular combat title Twisted Metal: Black bumped Grand Theft Auto 3 off the charts.

On with the show…

Top 5 PlayStation Mobile

PSM - Chimpact

  • MLB 13 The Show
    Journey
    >>>>>The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
    Terraria
    Tomb Raider
    BioShock Infinite

The fact that The Walking Dead: Merlenderl Edition is higher than Bioshock Infinite is really disheartening. That’s just sad. Game’s on BMX XXX tier bad.

  • I fully expect Guacamelee! to take the top spot next month!!!

    • If it didn’t, I’d be very surprised. The game is really fun, looks gorgeous, and is quite excellent overall in my humble opinion.

  • Yay! Bioshock & Tomb Raider made it in there – best PS3 games for me. Journey still claiming its spot on the list, as well as “I Am Alive” & Darkstalkers Resurrection is truly a surprise. Heard the game had good online connectivity & the new art concept looked awesome.

For it’s 2.99$ price, Nun Attack was surely fun & glad it’s up there. Decent list ya got there, Cade.

I think Divekick will surely be up on the list for April along with Guacamelee.

  • Atelier Totori Plus is number one for Vita, despite zero marketing, a late entry and costing a full $40.

Does this mean we’ll see lots of new JRPGs now?

  • Walking Dead Merlin Durl In Da Game, was just terrible. I really hope it dissapears off the top ten, how is it higher than Infinite? That is just mindblowing. But oh well, really hope Gauacamelee gets on here next, that game looks fantastic, day 1 baby!

  • xFuzylilManPeach

@1, i totally agree. I don’t get how it surpassed Bioshock.

  • @2 Rhysis1330

Even though it only gets one day in April… Soul Sacrifice is a good contender…

  • Soul Sacrifice will be in this list next month, if we can test a demo…

  • I will 2nd @4. More JRPG’s please.. :) Maybe some original ones.

Although, I just recently noticed a lack of fighting action RPGs such as Infamous/DMC/Yakuza/GoW on the Vita. That’d be a neat one to get this year. I realize Soul Sacrifice is close to that feel. .but not really. Haha.

That’d be fun to button mash on my Vita.

  • Even when FF VII is almost always the top seller for ps one classics Square Enix don’d make any remake or something that’s is why they are going down!!!!

  • I was hoping not to see the PlayStation All-Stars characters on this list. I really hope we don’t have to pay 5 bucks a character after Zeus and Isaac.

  • @9 “I just recently noticed a lack of fighting action RPGs such as Infamous/DMC/Yakuza/GoW”

GoW and DMC = Action titles.
Infamous and Yakuza = Action / Adventure.

ARPGs are games like Torchlight and Diablo.

  • @1 and 6 – Walking Dead came out a week earlier – only about 5 days of sales data are being counted for Bioshock, so I’m sure it’ll be higher on next month’s list. I also wouldn’t be surprised if more people bought physical copies and special editions of Bioshock instead of buying on PSN.

  • It’s sad that two of the top 5 PSone Classics aren’t playable on the Vita. What’s the hold up?

  • @13 Exactly what I was about to say on both fronts. I believe Bioshock is one of those games that you want to have the physical copy for your collection.

    • Both the amount of time a title was available during a calendar month and the opportunity to purchase a digitally vs. physically will affect ranking since these lists only pertain to digital sales. It’s always fascinating to me to see how things pan out, often with a couple surprises every month.

  • OMG please stop giving us fighting games for plus, Imo they are the most boring stupid and not fun games to ever exist! Also, how about some actual vita games instead of old psp games

  • Dangisuckatgamin

*’s= Number of Stars out of 5 Stars I Give The Game.
    I own
    MLB 13 The Show ***
    Journey *****
    Grand Theft Auto 4 ****
    DYNASTY WARRIORS 7 Empires ***
NBA JAM: On Fire Edition (got free with plus) **
    NBA 2K13 ***
Army of TWO The Devil’s Cartel ****

    7/20

Which means I own 35% of the games.

Not bad considering I hate single player, but Journey was fun even if it was mostly Single Player.

  • Glad to see Totori+ got some love. I was afraid that the stealth release might pass some people up. Hopefully this means Tecmo Koei will bring over Atelier Meruru+.

  • Survival Instinct is 3, really? Are people that moronic to buy such a pile of steaming crap?

  • US Soul Sacrifice demo. US Toukiden info.

    — Legend of Dragoon — Crash Bandicoot — Spyro — Where are the vita releases??!?!

see, this is why ps portables get modded
[aside from homebrew, freedom & old roms that would otherwise never exist on the portable…
    not considering piracy, that’s pretty obvious on its own];

The network doesn’t release games we already own a hard copy of *ahem GTA2, Skullmonkeys and Loaded what the EFF*, or doesn’t port those we have already purchased digitally so the community must do it on their own.

Re-release ALL classics and port ALL PS1 games to Vita. Then these games can actually be purchased so gamers do not have to resort to illegal activities to get what they want from your consoles.

I’m sure Sony would be surprised to see how many hackers would pay for or repurchase the games they backup & convert /pirate if they would just put games we already own on the store and port them!

  • So happy about Totori making it to the top. Namco Bandai should release the Tales remakes on the Vita now (Come on! I know they said no but we want them!). I just bought Totori and it was great, this should mean Meruru should come to Vita in the US as well :D.

  • I will not insult anyones opinion but i bought walking dead and love it. More fun than COD and actually made me jump a few times. Great to see Totori on the list and can’t wait for my portable version of Hyperdimension Neptunia.

  • @12: Thanks for the clarification. I’m not well versed in the terminology of games. I tried my best to describe them in the light that I saw them while I played. Thanks. :)

  • I doubt even Tecmo Koei could have predicted among their 2 Vita titles last month, Totori would outsell Dead or Alive 5. This is great to see, and it pretty much guarantees they’ll localize Meruru Plus as well!

  • With the great sale price, I’m surprised to see Deus Ex didn’t finish higher. Excellent game!

  • Well, walking dead surpassing Bioshock infinite is easy to explain. We’re talking about digital versions, and bioshock had not any incentive, even the $80 bundle (game+season pass) had nothing more than a theme, i know that it was a day1 etcetera but if the ps store had include at least the soundtrack it would be easily number one on the list. Physical copies were definitively more attractive. I love mine.

Except for the PSMobile games which are not featured on the web store.

  • Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland with Bonus DLC in the first place, I hope to see more JRPG in my Vita

  • @4

Totally agree. I hope devs can see we want more JRPG games.

  • The Walking Dead should not have been bought by anybody. What a waste of $60…and a intellectual property license. Any of the other games on the PS3/PSN list would have been a better purchase.

On a separate note, I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing what the Spring Fever sale has to offer me when the info. is released today!

  • BTW, hoping for sales on MGS Collection, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, Oddworld, and Sly Cooper for Vita, or Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Okami HD, Dishonored, or Sleeping Dogs for PS3. *Fingers crossed*

  • we need a reply function here, please :D

  • @10: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/22/final-fantasy-x-hd-vita-ps3-details-confirmed

I’m stoked for FFX HD, and if there’s a digital copy in the works it would surely make the top list

  • Considering that Atelier game for Vita is a Port from the PS3, a full priced download, and received no advanced press (and the only press it got after release was along the lines of “Hey, look at this game released with no annoucement”), I think it’s great that it’s made it to this month’s charts.

  • Is that PSM data really from March? Not a single game released in March is included.

    March games:
    Switch Galaxy: March 6th 2013
    DOOXDOO: March 13th 2013
    Forevolution: March 13th 2013
The Sexy Seashore: March 13th 2013
Out of Mind: March 19th 2013
Nekomimi Musume ga Sekai no Hate made Sanma wo Tabe ni ikuno DADADA: March 26th
    Quiet, Please!: March 26th
    Snake: March 26th

*ZooZooGo dropped its price to Free on March 13th as well

    From the list:
Beats Trellis: Oct 3rd 2012 (was free for 1 week in Feb)
    Castle Invasion: Feb 19th 2013
    Chimpact: Feb 13th 2013
Life of Pixel: Jan 8th 2013 (saw a huge patch in late Feb)
    Gun Commando: Jan 23rd 2013

Looks like Feb sales data to me, as most PSM titles have VERY short legs in terms of sales.

  • wow! the only god of war that made the list was ghost of sparta…………………………………………..i too fully expect guacamelee n soul sacrifice to make the next list..granted soul sacrifice come out the last day of april

  • @1 and @5 Tomb Raider and Walking Dead were higher than Bioshock Infinite cause MAYBE JUST MAYBE (sarcasm) they released in the BEGINNING of March while Bioshock released at the end. More days= More sales apparently, who knew? LOL

  • Is anyone else getting a little worried that there is no PS+ update yet aren’t they usually up by now? Last week he said there was a reason why he held off on posting the PS+ update but that reason didn’t seem like there was any reason to hold off on posting the Plus update since it wouldn’t be affective till the next day anyway?

  • @37 they posted the entire month last week dude..

  • I love that Star Wars BF II is #3 on the PSP list. Come on Disney, we want more Battlefront!!!

  • @4: And to think, Namco Bandai is derping it up with Tales on Vita (among other Vita games). There’s hardly anything, and a lot of people I know with a Vita, love JRPGs… so… let’s not release games in a genre that’s got hardly any competition!

    Makes sense.

If they were fighting games, I’d understand. Tons of those on Vita. JRPGs outside Japan? lolnope

  • Oh, thanks for adding PlayStation Mobile to this.

I hope you guys at Sony start advertising those games better so developers can sell better. Already reading some of them aren’t happy with the performance of their games. Not surprised. Little to no fanfare when they come out on here. And if there is a post on here, it’s usually people whining about trophies.

    • We’re always evolving, and adding PSM games to the monthly lists is a natural addition this year.

  • @38 I thought they only posted what games would be free this month not what game would be free what week and weekly PS+ discounts don’t they usually post a PS+ updates saying what game will be free and what discounts there will be if any the next day or is there just one PS+ update a month now on the blog?

  • @38 wrong
    @42 right

  • @43 he didnt ask the question in 37 like he did in 42. i still stand behind my answer.

  • Hope the Totori sales convince Namco to localize the Tales Vita games (and hopefully at retail too this time!)

  • @44 I asked about today’s update not last weeks update that said what free games we get over the next 5 Tuesdays we usually get an update telling us what we get the next Tuesday so you didn’t really answer my question in 38, 43 was more helpful.

  • Rather sad that Survival Instinct is so high on the list and surprising that a PS Vita game that came out of nowhere is at the top of the list although who knows how much it actually sold.

  • Dragonslayer_023

I have no idea how many sales being the top Vita game entails, but it’s awesome that Atelier managed to get there. It’s great to see people giving the series a try.

  • People say that JRPG’s are dead, and no one wants to play them. Yet when a JRPG comes along, people love it and buy the hell out of it. Look at Ni No Kuni, Fire Emblem, Persona 4 Golden, Atelier Totori+, and the fact that 4 out of 5 of the top classics are JRPG’s. VII has even been in the top 10 almost every single month since it’s release. Yet, we still can’t get games like Tales of Innocence R, Final Fantasy Type-0, or Bravely Default. It’s kind of sad.
