Dragon’s Crown for PS3, PS Vita Melting Faces on August 6th

Dragon’s Crown has had a long development process – especially for those of you who remember E3 2011 when Ignition first mentioned the game. But now ATLUS and Odin Sphere developer Vanillaware are putting a stake in the ground for August 6th, 2013. If you’re not familiar with Dragon’s Crown, it’s a 2D multiplayer action beat-em-up exclusive to the PS3 and PS Vita that features four-person co-op play, six character classes, skills that can be leveled up, and all the dungeon-exploring, orc-slapping, treasure-seeking action you can shake a magical staff at. If you’re not familiar with the date August 6th, please consult a calendar.

Dragon's Crown for PS3 and PS Vita

One of the reasons development took so long is the painstaking detail that makes every character, background or combat animation worthy of the artistic vision of Vanillaware. The intricacies in the artwork are immediately noticeable on both the PS3 and PS Vita versions. Speaking of, we’re working right now on making sure that gamers can take their saved games with them on the Vita. So while Vita adventurers can’t party up with PlayStation dungeoneers, it doesn’t mean they have to stop leveling and looting if they have to leave the living room.

The other thing that’s immediately noticeable about Dragon’s Crown are the fantastical player characters. The Amazon, Dwarf, Elf, Fighter, Sorceress and Wizard all exude extreme character designs to emphasize their powerfulness. The outlandish character design stands out from the hordes of goblins, orcs, myconids (evil, sentient mushrooms), and other dangerous creatures that populate the world of Hydeland. Oh, and in case you were wondering: yes, you can fight dragons in it.*

Aug. 6 will be here sooner than you think, so make sure to stay up to date with Dragon’s Crown on the official game website and right here on the PlayStation Blog.

*There will also be a crown in the game.

  • Yep another girl with armor…. what’s with that, the higher the level the less the clothes… erm

Anyways, looks good. I love the art.

  • Could’n’t u make a patch to enable cross-play? i mean since there is gonna be dlc the team could make it happen just at a later date

  • It’s so sad to be European,no release date for us again and i don’t want to import it.Maybe it is region lock like persona 4 arena.
I hope to enjoy the game before 2014 :(

  • Dodging the Persona questions means it must be for a Nintendo console. Welp guess I won’t be buying this game Atlus.

  • Atlus was behind Demon’s Souls – 3D Dot Game Heroes(seriously, thank you for this reincarnated version of that game on that one console that has the Italian plumber as it’s representative).

Dragon’s Crown looks and screams Dungeons & Dragons, Atlus published the title. i couldn’t be happier.

day 1 buy. now i have to decide whether vita or ps3….ugh…………..

  • @104 have a lil respect for the game that their advertising right now, yall want answers to everything that’s never relevant to the actual post, im sure they look at those posts and get a lil annoyed, i know i would

  • Reminds me of Dungeons and Dragons, will be getting this for the Vita!

  • Really looking forward to it.

Also, I hope you’re considering making it cross-buy, it’s something that compels me a lot more to buy a game (or even add-ons).

If I had to pick a reason, I would say it’s because I don’t have to choose between versions, I think purchasing it again just to have the other experience as well is rather silly.

I’ll buy it anyway, but having cross-buy pretty much guarantees my purchase.

  • First, I’m sorry for how long the comment is
But i registered so i could have the chance to leave his comment.
And i’m not sure where else to put this so i’m posting it here

First let me say I think Atlus is one of the best gaming companies out there.
You guys have made it a habit of telling a story in a way where it is unique and exciting while also throwing fun and innovation into the pot.

Persona, Steambot Chronicles,Radiant Historia and of course the game this post is about Catherine.

Now while i know the team i’m sure has been super hard at work on the next installment of the very popular series of persona I was truly worried about the news over the net.
“Fans of the Japanese cult title Catherine have some bad news coming their way, it looks like the game won’t be getting a sequel despite it’s critical and financial acclaim.” – http://gearnuke.com/

From the quote “There’s nothing planned, and I don’t think the game’s endings set it up for any kind of sequel (maybe it’d have to be a prequel or spiritual successor kind of thing?) but yeah, it’s awesome and totally would be cool.” – John Hardin

  • Statistics
-First it’s the best selling game at launch in Atlus history
    – Selling 200,000 in the first week (topped the ps3 charts, and 7th in the 360 ones, overtaking sales of Marvel VS Capcom 3) and hitting over half a million , which pales in comparison to persona 4 sales but looking at both Persona 2 on the psp and Devil Survivor 2 for the DS their sales total up to 218,000 which just barely over takes Catherine combined
    -Critically Acclaimed
IGN: 9/10 “This is a game that melds so much together and is so different than anything else on the market that it’s for just about anyone who really loves games.
Gamespot: 8.5/10 “Catherine is involving, intense, and unlike anything you’ve ever played.”
Famitsu: 35/40 “”This is definitely an impactful game for adults. The unique characters and difficult-to-predict story combine to make this a pretty charming package.”
MetaCritic: 79/100 “In an era increasingly defined by developers’ ever-growing fear of creating anything that isn’t a safe, conservative million-seller, Atlus’ willingness to create and publish something as unique as this is truly commendable. Best of all, it’s not just a weird game — it’s a great one, too.”

  • -Awards
Won: Biggest Surprise of 2011 (TeamXbox), Best ps3 story of 2011 (IGN), Best Story (IGN), Best Original IP(GameZone), Most Original Game (411Maina), Most Daring Game (1UP), Rookie Prize 2012(Famitsu)
Nominated: For twice as many awards.

Now i think the point has been made that Catherine is a good….no a great! game, now that begs the question why no hints for a sequel. Now since i like to program and make games in my off time here are my guesses.

    1. All resources need to be devoted to persona 5. It has to be the biggest, baddest, and best one yet so for Atlus nothing else needs to exist besides that game.
-Which if that is the reason it is super understandable to have to wait . I personally am on the edge of my seat for the game.

  • 2. Story wise (as said in the quote) What direction would this sequel go in I mean the story starts and ends perfectly. Its been wrapped up in a nice neat ball and because of the open, and diverging path of the ending there is no way to truly give it a sequel
    – Also a super valid point but i’m sure the creative minds at atlus can find a very amazing way around this. The game says that the deaths are happening in more places than just the games setting. But, My personal favorite ideas being kicked around are: “Make the game a prequel, play as Thomas Mutton he pretty much was the last legend besides Vincent to make it to the top, would it not be cool to see how he did so? His story could be what takes place in Catherine 2, and can also explain how he met Catherine. Like how DMC3 leads to DMC1″ – Jahkeemyork, or ” Take the game in someone else’s vision in the same time-frame as vincent. The area would have the same environment, but the puzzles and bosses would be different considering everyone has seen different bosses (However I’d prefer for this to be DLC if anything)” -OmegaZeik

  • 3. By “announcing” a sequel Atlus is ‘pigeon-holed’ into making a sequel even though it isn’t in development. Making the fact that it could be taken back for whatever reason all the worst for breaking it to fans. So the best idea is to say it is ALL up in the air until we have for sure started working on it.
-Which has happened in the past making lots of fans very upset. And you’re right that is the best way to handle but we’re not looking for a for-sure answer. Or a general release date. We only want hope, knowledge that there is a chance. Just a “The futures for Catherine isn’t set in stone but we have to say. It is very promising”

  • 4. Catherine’s charm is in its uniqueness being the only thing of its kind. Adding a sequel or even a prequel would ruin the appeal.
-Okay this is the only item on the list that is bad and not a valid point. Every game that has been good for the first time has had that unique appeal and it becomes a franchise by expanded on its good points. Mario, Zelda, Halo, Call of Duty all had these same thing going for it but made more of what the fans wants to become such pillars. Its only when you start to force more games into the series is when it feels forced. Catherine is a stand alone game, the only one of its kind and it is amazing and unique it is more than due for a sequel. Because just like left for dead and left for dead 2 came out a year apart it isn’t about the time between installments its about the quality of each. And its been 2 year for Catherine i think a sequel is due for it very soon.

Now that covers all the problems i can think of for the game.I’m not looking for anything concrete. But it would be really really REALLY amazing for us devoted community of fans who love this game to know that there is a chance for another installment of a game we still love to this day.

Thanks for your time, – Ken

  • Thanks for this amazing game *_*
I’ll buy it day one, but I don’t know if it’ll be on PS3 or PSVita.
No cross buy, but cross save right?
Will we have discounts if we buy the two versions?
Wii it have an online pass?

So sad Vita players can’t play with PS3 players online, that’s why I can’t decide on which plateform I’ll take it ^^

  • Wonder how you get the art book? pre order this from who to get it?
