The Order: 1886 Brings the Victorian Era to PS4

This project has been a long time coming, and I’m proud today that we finally have a chance to give you a first look into our new game, The Order: 1886. This is the first original IP created by Ready At Dawn, and the game is targeted exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

The genesis of this project happened many years ago, but it was not until 2010, when hearing of the upcoming PS4, that we as a studio decided it was time for us to bring this IP to life. We saw that the platform could finally give us the potential needed to achieve the vision we had for this game.

With The Order: 1886, we introduce players to a unique vision of Victorian-era London, an alternate history where technological advances take center stage in a battle against a powerful and ancient foe. The game takes place nearly forty years after the Industrial Revolution. But unlike in real history, our Industrial Revolution stems from mankind’s desire to prevail in a centuries-old war. The advances in technology, invented by some of the foremost minds of the time, give man an opportunity to take the upper hand for the first time in their struggle.

In the game, you are a knight, a member of an ancient order, and you will take center stage in this fight for mankind’s survival. As the game takes place in an alternate history, you will be able to interact with real-world historical characters who will aid you in your quest. You will see and navigate real places. You will not only be a witness, but have a hand in real events that have unfolded.

Beyond story and setting, there are a select few key concepts to which we wanted to adhere when we created this title. One of these is the filmic aspect of the game. As we developed our visual target, we used aesthetics that have been present in cinematography for decades to achieve our goal; from lenses and lighting techniques to grading, we wanted to recreate a visual feel that would bring you closer to what you have only been able to experience in movies.

We also strived to create a seamless experience when it came to the game. The idea was to make sure that you never saw any visual discrepancies or breaks in continuity between gameplay and cinematic. Our game models and our cinematic models are one and the same, and everything is rendered real time in the engine as you play the game. The trailer we presented is a great example of that. What you saw is running in-engine, in-game with no gimmicks. These visuals are what you can expect of the final game when you play it.

Of course, there is a lot more to talk about, and this is only the start. There will be more to come in the near future, and the team at Ready At Dawn and I can’t wait to share more of the game with you.

  • Steampunk and werewolves. I love it!

  • Lightning Gun. that is all

  • Glad to see the studio developing its own IP. Very intrigued.

  • Very intrigued.

  • Looks good so far.

  • This looks amazing. You’re killing it on PS4. Keep it up Sony.

  • Im extremely excited about this game, i just wish they would have showed more, they end the trailer right when everything was about to get crazy, i was like noooooooooooo what are you guys doing??????

  • Realy cool game, hope to hear more of it :)

  • The plus FF14 are my two top games for the PS4 so far.

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

This looked amazing and gave me a White Wolf Werewolf vibe. For you nerds that used to play that RPG, you know what I’m talking about.

Speaking of which, will this have RPG elements to it?

  • Byebye Resistance, welcome The Order: 1886. :D With RaD behind this I’m confident of greatness.

  • This definitely has my attention. Looked really good! Can’t wait to hear more gameplay details and see more of it too.

  • Looks great, can’t wait to see more!

  • This game, as odd as it sounds was my favorite Sony showed. I’m intrigued with the concept, setting, everything. With Sony Santa Monica publishing, Does that mean Read At Dawn will utilize a more advanced engine that was used with the God of War games. If so, MOTHER OF GAWD. O__O

  • This was the standout game for me this year. I’m yearning for more info.

Once I saw the horse-drawn carriages, the 19th century London skyline, and then the Whitechapel gates, I was hooked.

Now, I’m a big Jack the Ripper fan, and I know it’s nearly a given that this game taking place in 1886, London, Whitechapel (to some degree) means we’ll bump into him at some point, but I just wanted to mention that I’ve really got my hopes up with whatever portion of this game may include the infamous dissector.

Really hoping he’s the ‘big bad’ in the game, or at least has some part in it at all!

Game looks amazing and it would be an absolute tragedy to leave out one of the eras most prevalent figures.

    Can’t wait to play it.

  • This game is very interesting. Ready At Dawn made the best God of War game, no offense Sony Santa Monica lol :P

  • This game look amazing is like l4d by the trailer.

  • This game looked amazing and is totally up my alley! I’ve always been a fan of Victorian England and would love nothing more than to contribute in anyway on your game. In fact I am informally applying for a Cinematic position:

  • You guys deserve a push. I only played the PSP GOW on my brothers PSP a long time ago. But you just get a feeling when you see or play your titles, they have the spark.

  • AMAZING <3 Ready At Dawn…. Ghost of Sparta and now this amazing game!?

  • amazing

  • I’m sold.

  • This is awsm! Very intriguing, I like this kind of settings and definitely would like to try the gameplay ^_^.

  • Visually, this along with the Quantic Dream demo were the two most impressive things I saw today, on any stage. Absolutely amazing stuff. Glad to see RAD still working with Sony, I can’t help but think the studio is on-track to rival Naughty Dog for sheer quality of output.

  • badass!

  • How do you know it’s werewolves? It could be demons, or zombies or something. Can’t wait to see more about this game though it looks like it’s gonna rawk~

  • On the software side, this is the one thing that stood out the most to me in the E3 press conference. Sci-fi weapons, supernatural creatures, and an historic setting are pretty much the three main ingredients I look for in a game.

  • The lack of release dates for games is unsettling to say the least. I really hope it’s farther along than just pre-production.

  • Victorian era is a cool area in history to explore, especially its relation to GLBT attitudes and other social constructs/perceptions that stick with us to this day.

Will that aspect of be covered by the story or character choices at all?

  • I am really excited about this new IP, looks great with a small mix of steampunk maybe. Hope to see some actual people playing it soon!

  • Ignorances_ENEMY

    It’s gonna be awesome !

  • I’ve never been too interested in steampunk but this was my second favorite game shown after Infamous: Second Son. I cannot wait till there is some gameplay.

  • that looks so awesome!

  • concept look solid. Is any one else hoping for a Victorian era coop shooter that handles like the Left for Dead series? this is one of the better renditions of a steam punk concept I’ve seen in years

  • PLEASE tell us that Santa Monica is also working on their own game! Hopefully God of War IV or maybe a new ip!

  • First off, you Ready at Dawn guys are great. Ghost of Sparta is one of my favorite GoW games.
Super stoked for The Order. One of the best things I saw at E3. And… is it werewolves? Please tell me its werewolves. I’ve been wanting a werewolf hunting game for decades. Even if they aren’t, still looks awesome!

  • PS4 still has time to implement retrocompatibility with PS3 games, PS2 games and PSX digital games and decline Plus being mandatory to play online maintaining online playing free for everyone. If they don’t, I will give the thumbs down to PS4, use my PS Plus account to “buy” free PS4 games and only buy it after it has dropped it’s price dramatically or they add compatibility with PS3 in any way they want to. I encourage everyone that bought over 190 digital PS3 games supporting this company to do the same. RESPECT TO MY PS3 GAMES COLLECTION!

  • This game looks sick! Can’t wait to play it.

  • Awesome game.

  • Well done Ready At Dawn. It’s so great to see you guys coming into your own and bringing up your own IP and ideas after treating Kratos (and the PSP) with such incredible respect. I hope this game catapults you all forward.

  • This looks so awesome my favorite game from E3, besides Killzone ShadowFall and DriveClub, I’m just hoping this is going to be a FPS title cause that would be amazing especially with these beautiful graphic’s, I’m going to assume all PS4 will be 1080p. ThankYou SONY/PLAYSTATION. :)

  • Of course the PS4 stole the show, but software wise the Order and Battlefront got me the most excited. I can’t wait o see more of this game.

  • I think the PS4 should be released before Christmas, to boost up your sales and counter Microsoft. 12/20/13 looks like a good enough date, just 10 days earlier but that’ll make a difference. Just my two cents :P

  • Also required ps+ is not too bad an idea, since a lot of us are already willingly paying for it without being forced to do so.

  • This looks awesome and different but is everything gonna be this foggy? Poster foggy. Preview foggy.
I hope I can see into the distance…..as its a shooter. These old eyes arent as good at shooting as they were when I was young.

  • another wonderful new ip ^_^

  • So this is the St.Monica project on PS4….caaaaant wait to see a gameplay….I know ready at dawn is developing but I do know that graphics will be all Sony and St.Monica….this is unbelievable it looks like CGI.

  • Is this an FPS? of 3rd Person?

  • Wife thinks they are vampires
“A wall dividing life from death. So thin.”
    “A powerful and ancient foe.”
Her theory is that the last weapon you see in the trailer is actually a UV gun for taking out vampires.

I think that they are werewolves. If you look at the symbol for The Order, it looks like it has the head of a wolf and backwards legs like a wolf would have.

Regardless, she is willing to go in on a PS4 as a family purchase for this game. Now we just need to know when it’s coming out.
