DUALSHOCK 4: Hands-on Impressions from E3

PlayStation 4

Following its debut at PlayStation’s February 20th event in New York City, DualShock 4 has emerged at E3 in near-final form. Though DualShock 3 has proven to be a capable and dependable wireless controller for years with PlayStation 3, the PS4’s new weapon of choice is a clear improvement across the board. Here are some quick E3 2013 impressions.

For me, DualShock 4’s most impactful new feature is a subtle but shockingly satisfying detail: A glossy cross-hatched texture that wraps around the larger handles. This texture provides a snug, more comfortable grip on the device compared to DualShock 3’s slipperier feel. This is one of those things you’ll need to try for yourself to truly understand, but once you experience it there’s no going back. It’s a delight.

Then there are the redesigned and retuned analog sticks, which now boast a concave surface and slightly stiffer deadzone that makes it easier to maneuver the camera using small, precise movements. The surface is also more tactile, but not so much that it impedes your thumb’s ability to glide around the inner rim as your make subtle adjustments to your aiming reticule in shooters like Blacklight: Retribution. Much like DualShock 4’s new textured grips, the revamped analog sticks are a clear improvement to the classic design sported by DualShock 2 and DualShock 3. It’s no contest.

The directional pad — always a strength on PlayStation controllers — also impressed. It boasts a unified design that reminded me of PS Vita’s well-liked pad, only oversized and sporting a slightly more tactile finish. The depth and response of the pad felt just right: Not too clicky, not too mushy; not too deep, not too shallow. Meanwhile, the new Share and Options buttons that have replaced Start and Select were unobtrusively placed and felt satisfyingly clicky — appropriate for buttons you’ll use less frequently.

Finally, the new L2 and R2 triggers are exactly what you would hope for and expect. Featuring a slightly “hooked” design and less pressure resistance, these puppies are a perfect fit for your itchy trigger finger. I was also pleased to find that DualShock 4’s L1 and R1 buttons feel almost identical to those on PS3. Why fix what ain’t broken, right? It will be interesting to see if developers of PlayStation 4 shooters enable the player to swap the firing buttons between R2 and R1 like they often do on PS3, or if R2 becomes the universal standard going forward.

I didn’t get a chance to try out any titles that made use of DualShock 4’s new lightbar, touch pad, integrated speaker, or the mono earbud that enables online voice chat out of the box. But those will surely come in time. For now, I’m pleased to report that DualShock 4 is hands-down the best, most comfortable console controller I’ve used.

  • I own astro a40 will i be able to use them on the ps4. because i love my astro ?????

  • sonicjam717 yes u can use a Bluetooth mics the spec say there Bluetooth

  • First of all, I do like the look of it and that’s because I am comfortable with DS design but if there is ONE thing that I can’t stand is how it sits on the triggers. Really, that is just crazy. How can you allow that to happen again? Do you know how annoying it is?

  • atpd15M dont forget the 1 free month of ps+

  • zeeshansyed u met not like the triggers but ur not everybody

  • I’m loving everything about the DS4. But I really hope the L3 / R3 are not as easy to break like on the DS3. Please make something more solid.

I killed a few controllers playing FPS.

Thanks and keep listening to your Fanbase.

  • The controller looks cool and everything, but I’m hoping that if this controller isn’t as appealing to me, that they can release a version more like the original Dualshock 1- 3. I’m sure they can find a way to put the touch pad on top, and easily change start and select with the new share and options button. It’s unfortunate that this will probably never happen, but even then perhaps this controller may be very good. I also like the idea of different controller sizes, for different hand sizes. The regular controller can be medium, then they make a slightly smaller controller, and a larger one. Just my 10 cents. You are doing quite good Sony, keep it up.

  • Hi!

    Few questions!

You say the analogue sticks are more stiff. Can you try to describe this in detail? One of the many reasons I’ve been a Playstation Fan Girl all of these years and never the XBOX is because of many reasons, one of them being my disabilities (I have an extremely rare form of Muscular Dystrophy). For example, the 360’s analogue sticks are WAY too stiff for me to use, and the PS2/PS3 sticks are great.

L2/R2. Are they as springy as the Dualshock 3? I absolutely hated those! How about the “dead zone”? I hated how you had to pull them so far back in so many games before they registered, yet when you play music or something and so much as blow on your controller and the song changes haha.

Weight. How heavy is the Dualshock 4 compared to the Dualshock 3? Another reason why I prefer Playstation is because the controllers are so much lighter.

And “Select/Start”. Are they completely gone now?

    Thank you!
    Moosh

    • Veeeery slightly stiffer, almost imperceptible but it just feels “right.” L2/R2 aren’t springy like DS3’s, they feel more like honest-to-goodness triggers now. Weight is a smidge heavier than DS3 but not much – it feels pleasing. And yes, no more Start/Select.

  • You guys should really send this controller out to game retailers so people can get a hands on feel of the controller. A big thing for people is the feel of the xbox360 controller of dualshock 3 (even though I personally love the dualshock 3). If people can get a feel for the controller and how good it is it might sway pre-orders

  • This controller looks amazing. Less resistant L2/R2, concave joysticks, grippy underside… all great updates! I got my first Playstation for Christmas 1998 (I was 10) with A Bugs Life and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. Can’t wait to get my hands on this new system and its games.

I’m looking forward to hopefully having Rockstar bring GTA 5 to the PS4 at some point, a new Ratchet and Clank Series and Resistance.

    @#156 Zeeshansyed

I know what you mean, it makes me feel like they are gonna get ruined or slowly warp and lose tact/pressure from resting on them. It hasn’t happened that I’ve noticed with my PS3 controllers I’ve owned for however many years, but it is slightly annoying. With the PS4 looking as sweet as it does, I think I may spend the extra to get the Controller stacker/charger base.

  • @#162 MOOSH89

I think it means that when you turn, for example, left in a game that you kind of have to push it a little farther before it even registers that you’re actually pushing the joystick in that direction. PS4 is more sensitive as in as soon as you bump left you’re character is already moving left. I don’t think its harder to move the joystick, its just more responsive. Some game makers may (I have no idea, just a guess) even add an option to change sensitivity sort of how you can with a mouse and computer games.

  • I do like being able to plug my buds right into the controller itself, rather than the console itself, or going wireless. Any word on a ‘party’ system yet?

    • There’s definitely party chat but slim details beyond that. If you look at PS Vita’s chat system I think it’s fair to draw some conclusions, but we’ll get you more details as we get closer to launch!

  • Can’t wait to try it out. Can you please let me know if the DualShock 4 features multiple rumble motors? (like those other guys have ;-)

    • I know that rumble is being enhanced but I didn’t get to try it out. Another question for my follow-up list!

  • can’t wait to put my hands on it!

  • THEDRUMINGMANIAC

I really wish I was at E3 I saw coverage from Smosh Games and I really wanted to play the Batman Arkham Origins, Imfamous Second son and Killzone 4 demos :(

  • yo pensaba que iba a ser un control mas grande que el de dualshock 3 pero según veo por sus comentarios del E3 que es de tamaño similar.

  • I hope they’ll have a variation with the digital pad and the left analog swapped cause that’s how I’ve gotten used to gaming with a controller.

  • Thank you so, SO much, for switching from convex to concave, the best news I ever got in my life.

Hated PS3 controllers because your fingers always slipped off the buttons.

  • @BOVICE47
I’ve read that the PS4 will come with a controller and a headset. I do not imagine controllers bought separate will include mics. Those would have to be bought separate as well. As for other forms of headsets, I imagine that they will in fact work, particularly bluetooth headsets. I don’t think Sony is going to head in a different direction with that technology.

  • it looks awesome

  • This controller is spectacular, I’ve always prefered using the playstation controller above anything else. I know I won’t be disappointed with your new improvements. The only thing I’d like to know is how well tuned the new six axis is gonna be, lol I’ve found that to be one of the coolest things about the controller. Oh and the new touchpad seems like an awesome new feature as well.

  • About the triggers, with the DS3 and previous iterations, I felt like my fingers rested more naturally on L1/R1 rather than L2/R2… has it been changed with the DS4 so that your fingers more naturally rest on the “2” buttons?? Thanks for the article Sid!!

  • Hi,

Will the Dual Shock 4 support Headset made by Sony such as the Pulse Elite Edition Wireless Stereo Headset?

  • my biggest concern with this controller is the headphone jack. is this going to be required to be pluged into to chat like 360 controller? meaning that me and all my friends that have gaming headsets like astros, turtle beach, and trittons have to buy a plug just the use our $60-300 gaming headset. the mono speak chat thing is a casual gamer thing. i don’t have anyone on my friends list that doesn’t at least have turtle beach or trittons.

  • I know cross-game chat was confirmed a few weeks ago, can please tell us how many players are supported?

  • Hello Sid Shuman,

I know this comment is pretty late so you might not read it.. But I had a few questions.

How will this input work for a headset like a pair of Tritons or another similar brand. Would you just connect the little audio cable from the volume control switch to the bottom of the controller?

and also if you solely want to play with gaming headphones can we change the setting so sound doesn’t come out of the controllers speaker?

I live with my parents and game in middle of the night.. I have PS3 hooked up optical with the other audio through HDMI not selected. So I assume I can hook the PS4 up the same way but if the sound comes out of the controller it will wake up everyone.

    • Hi Jay – not entirely sure given that we’re still a ways from launch. But this question is going on my list!

  • It looks like Sony gave the controller just a standard microphone plug-in on the controller, unlike microsoft who made you pay extra for a unique Xbox microphone. If you’ve already got a headset that can plug in to a regular mic jack, it should work! :D I really hope that’s what’s going on here.

  • Controller design is so perfect and just by looking at it you can tell this sweet controller will be way better then any other controller out their. You think its possible to use this new controller with PC games and ect like DS3 can be used?

Do you know were the HDD bay is on the PS4? Is it possible to show photo of it or video showing it or something?
What type of HDD it will used: 2.5 inch 7-12mm size drive or bigger?

  • Where is the mic at? Is it built into the controller? If so how can I disable it? Can I make voice chat friends-only? I prefer to avoid public voice chats.

    • The mic’s that itty bitty blue thingee on the wired headset. As for voice chat settings, we’ll have to wait and see!

  • Can you please share with us the release date? We do know that November 25th, 2013 is right around the corner.

  • darksidersguy123

I can’t waite to get the new playstation 4 I am really excited about it about it and I can’t wiate to try it =)

  • Wow that controller looks sexy…and on another note THIS might be Sony’s greatest system ever created (based on all the positive things, which outweighs all the negative from what I’ve heard). It actually might surpass the success of PS2. I cant wait to see the UI

  • PS4 is going to be my new baby.

  • I have always loved the Playstation controllers and still think of the Dualshock 3 as my favorite current controller. The Dualshock 4 looks amazing and I already see it becoming my new favorite as soon as I touch it. The texture sounds good and the sticks have an interesting look that I can see myself touching just to touch. I’m also interested in seeing how the tilt sensors have improved. Sadly not enough games use that feature. I don’t want it spammed, but doing it right really adds to a game.
While the DS 3 was my favorite…..I have been through at least 4 or more that all ended up having the same problem after 6-12 months or so. The L2 button always got so flimsy that if I shake the controller then it pushes down…I can’t even lay it down without it going in. I hope the build quality will be better for the DS 4 because I have never had this problem with PS1 or 2 controllers
As for the D-pad….I have always personally liked it. But it isn’t great for Tekken games which I recently found out on Tekken Tag 2….pushing diagonal arrows didn’t always work and I had a ton of misses on that. Though Tekken could just choose a different way to use the controller.

  • (continue)

I ran out of characters thanks to the limitation so excuse my sloppy indenting there.

Anyway, I look forward to getting my hands on a Dualshock 4 and also getting some drivers for Windows/Linux.

  • will i be able to use my TRITON AXPRO HEADSET WITH THE PS4?

  • Man I’ve never had such a hard time deciding which system to pick. I keep seeing all these cool things these systems do but I hear more bad stuff about the xbox one then the Ps4.

  • She is beautiful.

  • Are wireless headsets going to be completely wireless. or do we NEED to hook it up to the controller?

  • Controller looks cool. Already preordered my ps4 with drive club. Slightly off topic but I have one question. I’ve heard the ps move will be supported in ps4 but will the attachments work? particularly the steering wheel? Thanks.

  • Does anyone know if your headsets that you own now for the ps3 will work for the PS4 (I have astro A50’s)

  • The controller and the system its self is too sexy.! Cant wait.!!!

  • Hey Sid,

Seeing as how several others have asked about the headset issue I’ll just leave mine at the fact that I’m interested to knew how or if both third party headsets and the current generation of ps branded headsets will work with the ps4.
I do however have a couple of other questions if anyone can help with them.

First, with the current two system limit on psn account activations can we expect an added allowance for ps4? I.e. I have 2 ps3’s currently and have pre-ordered my ps4 already. Will I have to deactivate one of my ps3’s in order to activate my psn on the ps4? Also if I pick up a vita will I then have to deactivate the remaining ps3 leaving me with two former gaming devices turned Blu-Ray players?

Second, will the current move peripherals work with the new camera or are they not necessary? Similarly, when can we expect some demonstrations using the new playstation camera?

  • (Cont)

Third, there is a video floating about on YouTube showing the ps4 interface…is this accurate or a very well constructed hoax? If it is a hoax when can w expect to see our first official glimpse of the ui?

Forth, are there any plans to increase the ps store wallet size? If we’re leaning towards streaming and downloading games as opposed to the disc based variety this might be a general issue for some but those of us who have played dcuo and wanted a lifetime sub were shut out of that due to the limited size of the ps store wallet so I’m curious.

Lastly, (thank god i know), will there be any official Sony packaged ps4 bundles coming? If so, when can we expect to hear about those?

Thanks for your patience and help Sid!

  • Am I the only one who is really against the concave thumb sticks? Personally, I really like the way the Dualshock 3’s are convex. I feel like I can maneuver my thumb around the top better and more accurately. I can’t stand concave sticks. Every time I pick up a controller with concave, I play very poorly. The way I play does not work with them.

I personally find no advantage to having concave. To me, it does not provide better grip and the concavity limits the types of movements possible with convex sticks. I am very sad that the Dualshock 4 has changed to a more concave design. Why can’t they just have different models with convex or concave sticks?

I think a good idea would be if the top surface of the stick could unscrew and be replaced with different tops.

  • The problem with the Duelshock 3 was it felt cheap for a $60 controller. This one looks like its made out of quality stuff, cant wait to get my hands on it.
