Bid for Greatness - PlayStation

Update: Before we grant rewards through our Bid for Greatness program, we authenticate the eligibility and Trophy count of all potential winning bidders, and if we believe that any potential winner did not comply with the terms and conditions of the program or that the potential winner’s trophies were not properly earned, we will disqualify that individual and award the item to the next highest, eligible bidder.

You know that Greatness Awaits, but did you know that you can bid on it? Today sees the launch of BidForGreatness.com, a one-of-a-kind auction house showcasing ultra-rare PlayStation memorabilia seen in PlayStation’s Greatness Awaits brand film during E3. If you win a bid, you’ll be the owner of an exclusive, real-life piece of PlayStation history.

Here’s how it works: You’ll log into BidForGreatness.com using your PSN ID. The site will tally all of your hard-earned Gold Trophies, and you’ll use them to bid on 15 unique items (don’t worry, you’ll keep the actual Trophies associated with your PSN ID). You’ll bid on the items you want using Gold Trophies and skip the ones you don’t. Each day will see a new item go up for bid for just 24 hours, so be sure to check back often!

Of course, you’ll want to think strategically. Spend all your Gold Trophies in one shot to try and score your dream item, or split your proceeds and go for several? The choice is yours. And the best part is, if you’re short on Gold Trophies you can earn some on your PS3 and PS Vita then come back to bid again.

Bid For Greatness runs until July 30th, and a new item will open (and close!) each day at 1:00pm Pacific Time. See below for a full list of all the epic loot. What are you going for?

  • While this is a cool use for our trophies. Making this US specific, IMO, is a bad idea, I wanted the crane concept art.

    :(

    You make me sad PlayStation.

  • Good idea, though the vast majority of people out there will never have any sort of chance to win anything. I have 439 gold trophies myself and even then trophy sites say there are still 300+ people in the US alone that out rank me and in theory have more gold trophies that I do. I mean it’s cool, but at the same kind sort of disappointed that at nearly level 32 I really have absolutely no chance at anything.

  • I NEED that Helghast Sniper Outfit!

  • Canada here. The site tells me it is only available to North Americans (CA, USA, Mexico) when I try to log in.

However, I live in Canada and am using a Canadian PSN account though. The site doesn’t work for my Canadian friends I asked either.

  • ahhhrealmonsters

Amazing and awesome Idea. Would be cool instead of bidding if you could use the gold trophies to earn a chance to win. Your gonna have to be an extremely hardcore gamer to even have a chance. Hell with my like fifty plats and 293 gold I have no chance at anything. Still awesome to see something like this and congrats to any of you truly hardcore gamers that win something!

  • Hi, today, I tried to logged my psn account to the site BidForGreatness.com. But for some reason, I kept getting this error message : “We are sorry but, you are not eligible to participate based on your location. Bidding is only available to users in North American territories (USA, Canada, Mexico).”

I called to PlayStation support and they told me that my account is an Canada account and they can’t find where could be the problem and ask me to leave a message on the blog….Hopefully you guys can help me out!

Thank you in advance! Looking forward for a reply.

Note: Sorry if I have a broken English =S.

  • finally our trophies mean something. :P

  • ”We are sorry but, you are not eligible to participate based on your location. Bidding is only available to users in North American territories (USA, Canada, Mexico).”

I’m from Canada and can’t log in.

  • It says that US, Canada and Mexico are eligible but my Canadian PSN account is ineligible just like all the others on this thread. Way to troll an entire country, Sony. Especially in a contest where time is a factor.

  • Hey, are you Canadians sure? I just read the terms and it says “50 states and DC” and over 18. Did they just fix the contract after all the whining?

  • hopefully people are dumb enough to keep bidding because I really want that helgast sniper outfit

  • I’m in Canada but cannot log in. I get the error message:
We are sorry but, you are not eligible to participate based on your location. Bidding is only available to users in North American territories (USA, Canada, Mexico).

Another quick question, if I have 840 gold trophies and bid all 840 gold trophies an on item and lose does that mean I cannot bid on anymore items?

  • This is a very nice idea and I’m glad they did it but let’s be honest unless you are a MASSIVE trophy hunter who is going to be able to get these things 462 trophies for the first item currently? I don’t have that much free time nor do I have a gigantic group of people that play on my account, who am I kidding I’m not sure if I had Platinum on all my games if I could get these items lol.

  • All the hackers will love this. Thousands of gold trophies in a matter of minutes.

  • this is terrible. The promotion basically rewards the 1% at the top of the Gold trophy count, giving the rest of us mortals no opportunity to bid on anything. 2 hours into today’s “auction” and the count is at 482.

  • The site’s Terms of Service says…

“…The Program is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Individuals must be 18 years of age or older participate in the Program.”

  • US only? Could they not afford international shipping or something?

  • @67: Then their login message shouldn’t say something entirely different. How do we know which is the mistake?

  • I have a better chance getting any of the current items with cold cash than with my measly trophy count but it’s an interesting idea. Hopefully, they’ll have items for us lower-level peasants.

  • @ andslasher123 / #61

You get your trophies back if you get outbid, so I can flat out tell you that item will go for no less than 400 trophies.

  • If you bid then get outbid do you get your points back to try for something else or do you spend them when you place a bid?

  • lol the comment before answered my question

  • No iOS support? Can’t seem to access the page from my iPad…

  • @69, I didn’t get that login message because I actually got in. I guess it’s one of those Catch 22 things.
I know the blog doesn’t like links, but here goes. Obviously remove the arrow heads.

    >>>>https://www.bidforgreatness.com/terms/<<<<

  • It would be nice to be able to get a bid history with userid’s. Bid is currently at 540. While I’m sure it’s doable that’s a ton of hours to legitimately get that many gold trophies.

  • This is very cool. Anything that adds a tangible benefit to earning trophies is fantastic. Thank you very much. I hope you decide to do more things like this. And, just a thought, sometimes it might be nice to tip the scale in favor of the masses while still rewarding people with more trophies, like raffle entries, where more people feel like they at least have a chance.

  • I’m in Canada and it says I can’t bid?

  • danggit, @69, tried to send you the link but of course I’m now in moderation…

use this as the template in the web address, but I had to remove the obvious link references. Hope this goes through, otherwise I give up:

    bidforgreatness.com/terms/

  • Top 30 or so US non-hackers have 900-2000+ golds. If you have less than that hope for a bid snipe.

  • I assume this is a stupid question, but is it simply the most amount of gold trophies automatically win? Because I’m hoping it’s more like a lottery wherein the more gold trophies the higher chance you have. Granted, there’s no reason to believe it’s like a lottery.

I’m just sad that my 125 gold trophies wouldn’t even come close if it’s based off of the most gold trophies :/

    Still very awesome.

  • Trying to log in to this but getting a message I don’t live in an eligible territory (available to US, Canada and Mexico) but I do live in Canada. What’s up with that??

  • this is lame. No normal person could ever win anything. I’ve been playing PS3 games for years and all i got is 15 gold trophies? who the hell has 600 gold trophies?? whats that like 150 completed games a year??? good grief. Thanks marketing guys

  • This should have been a raffle with each ticket being a gold trophy. As it is now, 99% of the PS users do not have a ghost of a chance at winning. the 1% think they have a chance, but they really don’t. Good idea, but maybe better execution next time.

  • CANADIANS READ THIS:

    2. PARTICIPATION ELIGIBILITY

The Bid for Greatness program is an auction based rewards program (“Program”) through which PlayStation gamers can redeem trophies, earned during gameplay, to bid for exclusive items and rewards available only on this Site (“Rewards”). The Program is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Individuals must be 18 years of age or older participate in the Program. Employees of SCEA, its affiliates and related parties, along with members of their household, are not eligible to participate in the Program. The use of automated services, scripts, or other machines is strictly prohibited and will result in the termination of that account holder’s access to the Site.

    That is all.

  • the site is not working for me… im canadian, live in canada yet the site doesnt recognize that and assumes i am not in north america

  • It has come to my attention that despite having a truckload of trophies……I have only 32 gold. I feel lost and cold.

  • @84 READ THIS:

“We are sorry but, you are not eligible to participate based on your location. Bidding is only available to users in North American territories (USA, Canada, Mexico).”

They have to get their story straight. That is all.

  • Sony, what are you doing if those trophies were won by using hacked PS3’s. I don’t think its fair if those who are bidding are only able to do so because of hacks and cheats. Cheapens the process and alienates all those gamers who put the work in legally.

  • This plan really needed to be put together more properly before executing it.

  • 71#
are you sure? wheres does it say you get your trophies back if u get outbidded?

  • It doesn’t allow me to log in because it seems like I am not in North America, which I am.

  • GET2DAACHOPPAAAA

A hacker will win most of the prizes. :-/

  • Cancel that. Page loaded on iPad.

Cool promotion but I can tell I stand no chance, even with 176 gold trophies.

Please do more like this in the future though. Maybe as someone stated earlier make it lottery style rather than auction style. Being able to win things like DLC and virtual swag would also be nice. Maybe extend it into a way to win new games early? I could see TONS hoping on the opportunity to win something like GT6 even a week or two early.

  • Initial glance at the article and site had me very excited to participate. But after further investigation, it appears that the 30 or so items will go to the top 30 most gold trophy earners. As the bidding system allows you to bid all of your gold trophies, and when the auction is over, if you don’t win, those trophies are given back to the losers of the auction for more attempts in future bids.

It would have made more sense to make each gold trophy only bid-able ONCE, meaning that you had to be more choosy with when and how you bid, cause if you’re out bid, then your gold trophies (or bid chances) are still gone. That would have at least given the rest of us a SMALL chance. But nope, might as well have just contacted the top 30 gold trophy count holders and said, pick your prize. As in essence, that is how this bidding will play out.

Still like the idea of trying to give real would weight to our virtual world trophies, maybe the next contest/promo will be conducted on a more fair approach, one where EVERYONE has at least a CHANCE to win.

  • Hey, LordMaim, we didn’t get that message because we got in. But you are right, their blocking message is inaccurate and kind of cruel.

Maybe you Candadians can lobby your SCEC to put on more events, contests just for you all? It can’t be that hard or prohibitively expensive. Or does your country have more restrictive laws on contests?

  • So if you lose a bid, do you get your golds back to bid on another item?

  • The idea is nice hopefully we will see something I can actually get eventually but not counting on it. But for this I have a better chance of winning in Russian Roulette as the first shot with six bullets than I do this.

  • Just check my Gold Trophies I have 196. someone said that the first item is 300 Gold Trophies worth. Just thought of an idea. Anyone want to boost Trophies with me?

  • @RenderMonk: Even real life auctions don’t work that way. The winning bidder pays the amount of the winning bid. Others involved in bidding on that same auction don’t pay.

Am I a little disappointed? Sure, but it is what it is.
