DuckTales: Remastered Hits PSN Today

I’ve been working with the team at WayForward Technologies to bring you guys DuckTales: Remastered, launching today for PS3 as part of PlayStation Store PLAY. At the start of development, the main goal of the project revolved around updating the game while keeping the gameplay true to the original NES game. As the game progressed in development, we found that all of the new content really started to bring the original cartoon to life as well.

Magica

For those that may not know, the original DuckTales is firmly seated in the pantheon of the greatest NES games of all time. Widely praised for its tight controls, addicting platforming, and some of the best 8-bit music known to humanity, DuckTales stood apart as a fantastic licensed game. When creating DuckTales: Remastered, the very first step was to make sure the game felt right, meaning it played just like the NES version. To do this, early versions were tuned so that you could play the original NES version of the game and our new version at the same time with one controller. So for your pure platform gamers, you’re going to find that this game just feels right.

When you boot DuckTales: Remastered up, the first thing you’ll notice are the new visuals. All of the characters in the game are painstakingly animated in a traditional 2D method that would have been similar to what Disney used to do in their cartoons. Each frame is individually drawn in high resolution and digitally animated. The results of this technique are smooth, cartoon-like animations that are highly expressive.

The environments have gone through an equal amount of care. They were based on layouts by an artist that worked on the cartoon, then painted by an artist that worked at Disney TV for years. These high-resolution paintings were then scanned and used as the textures for the 3D models that make the levels.

DuckTales Remastered on PS3

The moment development felt like we were bringing the show to “life” was when the voice-overs started dropping in. Thanks to Disney, we were able to have every surviving cast member from the show reprise their role, as well as new actors to fill in the rest of the roles. Using the VO work to really flesh out the story and explain what’s going on, DuckTales really started to feel like watching episodes of the show.

The last piece of the “remastered” puzzle was to update the music. WayForward games are known for their fantastic music. The music in DuckTales: Remastered has the unique trait of being modern arrangements that have a classic 8-bit “sound” to them without actually being 8-bit music. When you hear the updated and new tracks in DuckTales, you’ll really hear the NES roots come through.

For the team, this project has really been — in the words of the project director — a love letter to our childhoods. Everyone involved has a soft spot for Scrooge and crew, and it’s been an honor to update a true classic to what we all feel is the total package. The gameplay stays true to the original, while the art, animation, voice-overs, and music not only bring the game to the present, but brings the cartoon to life in a way that wasn’t possible before. I hope you all enjoy playing the game as much as we loved working on it.

Exclusive to PS3 will be a boxed version available at retail stores that contains a voucher to download the game from PSN as well as a special collector’s pin. This pin is actually slightly different from the pins we gave away at E3 and SDCC. It’s a little bit thicker and of better quality and has the rubber Mickey Mouse backing that makes this an official Disney pin for all you collectors out there.

DuckTales: Remastered is available today for $9.99 $14.99. Remember, you’ll get bonus PSN cash vouchers if buy multiple PlayStation Store PLAY games!

  • Hey I was just making a joke. I’m not on every “SINGE” week waiting for an update I’m usually at work. But today is special. For the record though I’m reading comics while I wait. Have a good day and learn how to joke around kaminari2.

  • @ DarthSchrader666 – PSN may be laxed but for your info XBLA has to wait till 9/11/13 for there release, PSN might not be exact on time but they do get alot first.

  • I would love a Vita version too.

  • It’s already up. 640MB is a kinda small file, I hope that the game won’t be too short.

  • It is not up. It will not be up until the PSN is updated which usually, or lately has been around 5 or 6 PM EST. I know that we can expect this game will be on no later than 8 PM EST.

  • trum3n1 is right. The game is live. Just under 643 MB. I’m downloading it as I type this.

  • Impossibru!!!!!!!!!!

  • He is right. I am DL’ing too. COOL, THANKS DADZ!

  • I am downloading the game as I speak also. If you like platform games you should try this out. For us older players it brings back a lot of memories.

  • SO, NRS CAN KEEP THEIR “SCHEDULE” & ALREADY HAS AN UPDATE FOR THE NEW DLC FOR “INJUSTICE” BUT AS USUAL(!), PSN IS “LATE AGAIN” ON GETTING ANYTHING NEW! MEANWHILE, AN “X-Box player” SAID IT’S “BEEN” ON THE X-BOX LIVE MARKET!!!!!! LIKE I SAID BEFORE, MY GRANDMOTHER IS FASTER THAN PSN’S “TRASH” SERVICE & SHE’S BEEN DEAD FOR 9 YEARS NOW!!!IT’S PRETTY BAD OF PSN THAT THE DEVELOPER HAS “BEEN READY” FOR IT’S PLAYERS TO GET THEIR NEW “DLC” BUT DUE TO PSN’S PATHETIC INCOMPETENCE, I NOW HAVE “ZATANNA’S” STUPID “IMAGE” ON MY GAME, BUT NO “ACCESS” TO IT BE AUSE OF THE RETARDATION OF PSN!!YOU’RE SERVICE IS COMPLETE GARBAGE, SONY & I HOPE “PS4” IS YOUR “DEATH”! Of course, if “PS” was ever to fall, it’s due to the “TRASH SERVICE” that it gives to it’s customers!

  • Everyone not downloading this like right now is crazy or just an old “Scrooge”. :P 3 minutes lef ton download XD WOOO HOOO

  • $9.99 actually sounds like the more reasonable price considering this is a remaster of an old game. I’ll wait for this to be a plus game because i have other games i’m more interested in investing money on right now.

  • OMG! IT’S ABOUT TIME SOME1 DID “THEIR” JOB! To “whoever” has the job at PSN of “changing” the store you need to BE TERMINATED of your “employment” so they can get some1 who doesn’t go by a crack addicts “anytime” schedule goes! All I got to say is “THANK YOU, & it’s about TIME”!

  • Downloadinng the game!

  • I am thrilled to be able to re-live this game in HD. Are there any plans that you can announce for maybe doing a HD remake of Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers?

  • the game is on the store i just looked but sadly no money atm and more INJUSTICE DLC… well ducktales in and injustice DLC it is.

  • I got the game last night and hope that it is fun. I appreciate the background on how the game was made and the level of animation for the characters. I’m also glad most of the original cast is still alive to add voice overs. This will be like a lost episode of the show for me. I hope the game does Professor F proud!

  • also i never buy single player games. or local co-op games but this one i’m making room for my ps3.

  • I am glad to see i am not the only one going crazy…. I love the original ducktales 1 and 2 am a huge fan, so went nuts when saw trailer for this. I preordered it my very first time preordering a game on pns and i figured preordering mean getting it faster and cool stuff, well its 4 pm and all i keep getting is the free theme but no game…… arghghghhgghGH!~!!!!!!!

  • No Vita or 3DS version, no buy.

The reviews coming out are pretty harsh on this, too. Shame.

  • How is that game NOT on the VITA? It looks perfect for it!

  • please don’t get me started on the vita again… did we have this game on a handheld we did on the GAMEBOY with no COLOR. (also SUPER GAME BOY or playing the GAMEBOY COLOR or GAMEBOY ADVANCE don’t count.) wayfoward may or may not put this on the vita… but personal i would like this game on the big screen.

  • I just went through the first level. I like it. ha I really do.

  • Hey guys I made some calls to Sony. It’s up now

  • The developers of Sony and others who are making games are terrible strategists!

    – Created a handheld console called PSVITA, with the promise of having MANY GAMES AAA;

    – Are putting STUPID GAMES from COMPETITORS Android and IOS overpriced;

    – And ALL games that are perfect for playing in PSVita, Sony and game developers do NOTHING!

    ======================

A game from Capcom? …. No PS Vita version? = FACEPALM AGAIN for you = SONY and CAPCOM

    ALTERNATIVE IS = PC VERSION!

  • It may be out for you but its not on my psn store yet all i keep seeing the the theme but no game…. its already 4 pm im so upset…

  • @Sid Shuman, When they said, “The perpetrators will be punished.” it should have said, “Those responsible have been saked.”

  • So jazzed for this game.

I’d like Chip and Dale and/or Quackshot. The Mickey game is already in motion.

I just wanted to say thank you capcom and thank you wayforward.

  • What quality are the music assets? Will there be DLC that adds the option to use the original soundtrack?

I really hope that Capcom brings A Boy and His Blob and Zak & Wiki to PSN. All my friends loved playing Okami again in HD (even if the audio quality was pretty poor). I’d love to play them on PS3/4 so I can see the beautiful art on my HDTV, but I think they’d be really fun to play on Vita as well.

Any chance of Okamiden on Vita?

    Thanks!

    • Are you looking for the bit rate of the music? I honestly have no way to tell. The source files are 1411 kbps but I don’t know if they are scaled down in the final input.

Don’t need DLC for the original soundtrack, finish the game and you unlock 8 bit music mode. Select that and all the music is the original NES music or 8 bit versions of the new tracks.

  • Update is live!

  • yaaaaaaaaaayyYYYYY!!!!! Im downloading it now :)!

  • It should be out around 9:00 PM EST. Shouldn’t be any laterthan that.

  • This is a remake of an old 8 bit platformer. Why in the holy mother of God is this not on Vita???

  • wow, 90% of the people commenting are a-holes.

Stop being so immature, entitled, selfish and impatient. You people have NO idea what these developers have to to go through. And you also have NO idea what goes on at PlayStation HQ, and to state otherwise is folly.

Until you’ve walked a mile in someone’s shoes, you can’t say anything. You don’t know how hard an stressful the gaming industry is. These people pour their hearts, souls, blood, sweat and tears into these games, and instead of being grateful they decided to do this in the first [lace you all gripe and moan like a bunch of ungrateful children.

People like you all are the reason Phil Fish had a mental breakdown. You can literally drive someone crazy just by being heartless an cruel. KNOCK IT OFF.

  • @DarthSchrader666 Everyone please ignore this fool. He is a plague to the PSN community and needs to be banned.

  • Will this title work over remote play? That way we can at least play some of it on vita while our SO is watching biggest loser or something….

  • Thank you for making this! I played the original way back when, and loved the cartoon series. Nostalgia awaits me. Thank you!

  • If it was available on the Vita, I would totally pick it up. Ah well.

  • Remaster Quackshot. You are bringing out Mickeys castle of illusion.

  • soooo worth the wait!!! the soundtrack blows my mind its perfect so much memories, been so long since enjoyed a game like this, i missed 3 boxes of treasures 2 in the prequel stage and 1 on first stage i remember going crazy back than when missed boxes lol!! def worth the price! and more!

  • I could careless how much it cost i paid 12 but would pay 50 in a heart beat, i waited till like 5 pm to get mine because had to wait for update on psn it was an insane wait but so worth it the game is amazing and i will replay it as much as i did with the original i remember been able to beat the old one in such lil time but the enjoyment of the game was so much that time was nothing same will go for this one!

  • @camiLLa19

I agree with you. It’s a great game and well worth the wait. I find it pretty easy even on the hard setting.

  • I have my game can’t wait to play it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ jgrizzle358

    Right on.

  • Capcom hits another major disappointment for Vita owners.

I miss the old 8 bit Capcom days.

  • @ jgrizzle358

Although, I must say, the mental breakdown was probably due to the STUPIDITY surrounding him, rather than the cruelty… believe me… I almost feel like snapping every day at the stupidity of some people, many of whom are here polluting this blog every day. Cruelty just makes me sad. But stupidity drives me nuts.

  • Anyone else having problems with the game freezing? I’ve been playing hard mode since I started & beat Amazon level but now at the end of Transylvania the game keeps freezing & locking up my Playstation. After the 2nd time it froze I unplugged it & cleaned it with Dust remover. I my Playstation turned off about an hour & then tried again & as soon as I beat Magica it freezes on the save screen for a 3rd time. I might try again tonight but Im debating on trying a redownload first. If other people are having the same issue then I’ll wait on a patch though. Thanks.

  • Megrim it froze on me on the amazon stage as well once i beat the stage it froze and locked my ps3

  • @84: Phil Fish created his own demise. He was treated badly because he treated others badly. Do two wrongs make a right? Of course not, but you can’t just ignore that he brought most of the hate he received on himself.

  • Too bad you don’t have plans for a Vita version… it would have been awesome.
